Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey President was the best man at German and Arsenal footballer Mesut Ozil’s wedding on Friday. Recall that Ozil, who has Turkish roots, sparked outrage when he posed in photos with Mr Erdogan before the World Cup last year, 2018.

He then quit international football, citing the “racism and disrespect” he’d experienced over the photos in Germany. The 30-year-old Arsenal midfielder married his fiancee, former Miss Turkey Amine Gulse, at a luxury hotel on the banks of the Bosphorus.

Ozil had announced in March this year that he’d asked Mr Erdogan to be his best man which, again, sparked criticism in his home country. This made Helge Braun, German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s chief of staff, told Bild newspaper at the time that it “makes one sad” that Ozil would make such a choice, given the reaction to his meeting with the Turkish president last year.

The third-generation Turkish-German was born in Gelsenkirchen and was a key member of his country’s 2014 World Cup-winning side. He has 92 caps and fans have voted him the national team’s player of the year five times since 2011.

But in May last year Ozil sparked a nationwide controversy when he posed alongside the Turkish leader ahead of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, prompting some in Germany to ask questions about where his loyalty lay.

“I am German when we win, but I am an immigrant when we lose,” Ozil said, adding that despite his successful history with the team, the way he was treated made him “no longer want to wear the German national team shirt”.

I'm not going to sugarcoat it, sometimes is very scary to live in America. A South Carolina father was sentenced to death on Thursday for killing his five children with his own hands. After they were dead, he drove around with their bodies for nine days before dumping them in garbage bags on the side of an Alabama dirt road, Associated Press (AP) reports.

Timothy Jones Jr. showed no emotion as the jury delivered the verdict after less than two hours of deliberation. The same Lexington County jury convicted Jones of five counts of murder last week in the deaths of his children, ages 1 to 8, in their Lexington home in August 2014.

Jones' father hung his head in his hands as the verdict was read and other family members appeared to cry. Afterward, Jones' family left without speaking to reporters. The defense indicated they would appeal. The victim is just the second person to be sent to South Carolina's death row in five years. The state has not executed anyone since 2011 and lacks the drugs to carry out lethal injection.

In the prosecutor's (Hubbard) words:

Hesaid in his closing argument that Jones, 37, has been selfish all his life, trying to break up his father's second marriage because he wasn't getting enough attention and controlling his wife's every decision.

When his wife left him, Hubbard said, Jones couldn't stand that his control was over. With custody of his children, the computer engineer with an $80,000-a-year job mistreated any of them who showed any intention of wanting to be with their mother instead of him.

Jones first killed 6-year-old son Nahtahn in a "white hot rage" after the boy confessed on the phone to his mother — but not to his father — to breaking an electrical outlet, Hubbard said. Over the next several hours, Jones went and got cigarettes, taking his oldest daughter so she wouldn't call for help, and leaving the three other kids with their brother's body.

Then he made a decision, just like the one the jury was called upon to make, the prosecutor said. "He sentenced his kids to death,". In a confession, Jones said he strangled 7-year-old Elias with his hands and chased down 8-year-old Merah before choking her. He then used a belt to choke 2-year-old Gabriel and 1-year-old Abigail because he said his hands were too big.

That deserved death and not life, Hubbard said. A life sentence "is just send Timmy to his room, make him think about what he has done".

Jones loaded the children's bodies into his SUV and drove around the Southeast U.S. for nine days before dumping them in five black garbage bags on a dirt road near Camden, Alabama. He was arrested hours later after an officer at a traffic checkpoint in Smith County, Mississippi, said he smelled a horrible odor of decomposition.

He then ended his closing argument with those bags. Prosecutors entered photos showing what was inside the bags into evidence, but didn't show them to the jury. Jurors could have chosen to look at them during deliberations if they wanted.

"If you have any doubt for the appropriate sentence for that man, look in the bag!" Hubbard said.

The defense focused on what Jones' lawyers called undiagnosed schizophrenia made worse by drug and alcohol use. Jurors last week rejected their arguments that Jones was not guilty by reason of insanity or guilty but mentally ill which finally led to his death sentence.

It takes a democrat and someone with the interest of the country to admit the truth even though you are going against your own party ideology. The former National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, John Oyegun, has said that former President Olusegun Obasanjo was the kind of leader Nigeria needs.

Oyegun told New Telegraph that Obasanjo’s comment on “Islamisation and Fulanisation” might have been dramatised but it calls for concern. According to Daily Post reports, while delivering a lecture on May 18 in Delta state, Obasanjo had said the Boko Haram crisis had become an agenda for “West African Fulanization, African Islamisation.”

For Oyegun, Obasanjo “is addressing an issue that is with us.” The former APC National Chairman said that while he may not tag the crisis as “Islamisation, there is no question at all that it calls for worry.

In Oyegun's words:

“Well, I respect him (OBJ). Every nation needs a man like that just like the people’s SAN, Chief Gani Fawhemi and a lot of activists. “What is happening is that because of his status, his experience, his background, what he says becomes infinitely weighty and cannot be ignored.

“I just told you that this issue of so-called Fulani herdsmen and the copy cat that have followed it has to be addressed. “So, the issue has to be addressed. I wouldn’t give it the kind of Islamization tag that is given to it, but there is no question at all that it calls for worry because these people exist virtually in every state of the federation and, very soon, it would lead to unpleasantness in all over the country.

“So, the issue has to be addressed and, as I told you that as far as I am concerned, it would be one of the first priorities of the next level administration.”
