PoliticsRe: River State Should Be Part Of The South East since Igbo have 6 governors by ezeagu(m): 8:27pm On Jul 04, 2011
First of all Idoma is not an 'Igboid' group, second Igala don't have to split themselves for anybody, and third Tiv is not coming anywhere near the south east.

Umuhia I dey laugh grin grin grin grin grin grin I can't even compare umuhia to Nnewi not to talk of the city of Awka. As a land economist, Umuhia is too rural and more like a council area, I insist. Awka is too beautiful, organized, planned with good architectural designs, bubbling social and night life and awesome hospitality far above umuhia. As I said earlier umuhia could best be compared to Ekwulobia.
Is that the same reason Umuahia was once the capital of Biafra after Enugu fell? Why don't we post pictures to see this imaginary Oka advancement?

do u want me to start mentioning names of some ezes that have messed kingship? Have u asked urself why ngwas are hated especially those abala guys in obioma ngwa? Have u asked urself why abians sold their conscience to t.a orji?
Maybe you should also ask yourself why all other Igbo dislike people from Anambra, maybe that would help with your answers. Abia being under T.A Orji doesn't change the fact that Anambra is barely more progressive than Abia.

kasiem:
Have u asked urself why chima nwafor's corpse was taken aloft to his father's compound? Have u asked urself why seventy five percents of the properties in abia state are owned by anambrarians?
Which 75%? Starting from and including where, do you also mean people villages? Because 75% would mean that Anambra people own at least half of the villages in Abia. Why don't you make sure of your facts before declaring achievements.

Not very wise statement. Somebody criticize a state gov for failing and outline problems. U go on an envy trip. The fact Anambra is the head of Igboland in everything and dat naturally brings envy. So the sarcasm suggests that you agree that Onicha is equally bad?

Onitsha is like New York compare to aba-ngwa. If you have visited Onitsha recently you will see the wave of transformation sweeping thru the commercial hub of Nigeria. Onitsha is cleaner, more organized, planned 100x than aba. Aba has no roads, no government, no infrastructure, everywhere flooded like hell, name it.
No roads or government, oh really? So if we release some pictures of Onicha flooded, what will we then say about the New York of Nigeria?

1. Tribalism killed it. Ibos/Calabar are still not ready to see people of not their type in their backyard. to turn around things, nigerians must be encourage to relocate to that place, you need people for show/market business. only your people cannot do it alone. Yorubas never develop Lagos alone, thanks to their open hearth and acceptability.
Where did you hear this from, or did you decide it was by force to post a comment?

The greatest criminals comes from your state abia. They even kidnap for a mere 5k. Remember at a time banks has to close shops for months in aba. The greatest kidnap kingpins that brought bad name to the Igboland and Nigeria at large (osiskangwu and co). I think you should be more concerned with the disaster in aba and how to tackle it, it has really brought ugly image to the SE.
You can talk about Aba when Onicha is there rotting in your face.

Do you want us to mention roads and post pictures. The estates in Awka with good infrastructure is un-countable. From Abuja estate (where you have Orient Petroleum HQtrs) to Udoka estate to Liberation estate to Amansea estates to Iyi-agu estates (where you have Silverbird TV & Radio communications).
Sorry, but you haven't said anything that is happening in Oka that isn't happening in Umuahia.

Abia state is the least in population in the southeast.
The census says Ebonyi is the least. The census also says there are 500,000 people in Onicha so you should really ask yourself how seriously you want to take this information.

You arguement is baseless and devoid of any facts. Why in the world will you compare Awka to a small Umuahia.  However nothing could have taken me to umuahia few months back except for a traditional marriage of a friend. On approaching Umuahia one hardly know its a state capital. I can tell you that umuahia is more like an improved local government council. You mentioned population, apart from state civil servants in Umuahia nothing more is happening in the town. Awka is more balance, organized, planned and bigger 3x the size of the umuahia. Awka has the much needed population from civil servant to the students population that add to bolstering social life to it. If have been to Awka recently you won't have the moral justification to post trash on this thread.
I don't really see, in terms of infrastructure, what Oka has over Umuahia. Umuahia has always been known as one of the cleanest and most peaceful towns in Nigeria, until the recent problems in Abia. The Umuahia you're even talking about is on the outskirts which is surrounded by several villages. Even the villages are becoming more advanced with gsm masts and better improved roads. Have you visited Library Avenue or the world bank? Have you seen the new housing and recent developments there? Oka may be bigger than Umuahia in terms of land size and population, but it is hardly bigger than it in terms of advancement.

Aba is the opposite of Umuahia, but that is because Umuahia is the state capital.
It's because Umuahia is not as industrialised and Aba is with more people. Umuahia has always been a quiet clean market town, well until recently.

CultureRe: Nairaland Official Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba Dictionary by ezeagu(m): 3:23pm On Jul 03, 2011
The problem with speaking proper Igbo is that not everyone understands proper Igbo.

odumchi:

@ Ezeagu

I try my best to speak unadultered, Englishfree Igbo. If people try abd think they'll find out there is a word for everything practical and precolonial in Igbo. If you'd like to prove me wrong I want ANYONE TO POST A LIST OF NON-MODERN AND NON ENGLISH THINGS that they think aren't expressed in Igbo and I'll be happy to answer. smiley
Of course, there are also non-modern words that couldn't have existed in Igbo (apple, potato, snow, tsunami).

ChinenyeN:
Oh okay. I know what you mean. I've noticed it to (the conjunctions and the Engligbo). But me, I've managed to eliminate all (if not that, then most) of the English conjunctions and replace them with the proper equivalents. On the non-modern words, how exactly do you express computer, phone, and internet?
Computer, phone and internet should just be Igboised to komputa, fonu and intanet, unless people want to go to the very basic roots of these modern words (which are usually Latin, which has a vocabulary similar to Igbo, and also a way of putting words together to make new words similar to Igbo) and provide their own Igbo versions, which could look funny, but could look something like this:

Computer
'Computer' from 'compute' from Latin 'computare' coming from com 'together' and putare 'to settle an account', but with in English meaning to calculate, calculate is:

"–verb (used with object)
1. to determine or ascertain by mathematical methods; compute: to calculate the velocity of light."
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/calculate

So in Igbo that would be something like gukọta 'count together', then add a Ọ in the front and:

Computer: Ọgukọta

Phone
Short for telephone from tele-:

"Origin:
combining form representing Greek têle  far, akin to télos  end"
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/tele-

and phone

"from Greek phōnē voice, sound"
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/-phone

so in Igbo, té or tèrè/tèlè is 'far, long' (funnily enough) and ólú 'voice, neck', so:

Telephone: Tèlólú or Ólútere (or can be Ọwụólu, 'voice jumper')

Internet

"Internet
1985, "the linked computer networks of the U.S. Defense Department," shortened from internetwork , from inter-  + network."

inter-

"inter-

a prefix occurring in loanwords from Latin, where it meant “between,” “among,” “in the midst of,” “mutually,” “reciprocally,” “together,” “during” ( intercept; interest );  on this model, used in the formation of compound words ( intercom; interdepartmental )."
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/inter-

network

"Origin:
1550–60; 1910–15 for def. 2; net  + work"
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/network

Igbo: Só- (same meanings as inter) and kà ùbu, kùbu 'like a net, network'

Internet: Sókùbu

PoliticsRe: By 2050 The Population Of Nigeria Will Be 402 Million by ezeagu(m): 2:27pm On Jul 03, 2011
Horus:
No Nigeria is not overpopulated, far from it. We have to look at the population density of Nigeria, ( people per square mile ). The population density of Europe is higher than in Nigeria, (more people per square mile than Nigeria), so in fact Europe is overpopulated and Europeans are not complaining about it. We have to create more jobs for the youngs and build more skyscrapers in Nigerian cities.
We have to also realise that the whole of Nigeria is not populated evenly, the largest states in Nigeria are largely empty because they are mostly dry, but the smaller ones are packed like in the south. South eastern Nigeria has a population density rivalling the Nile Valley in Egypt which has the highest density in Africa. It would be easy to talk about Nigeria's acres and acres of free land if we didn't consider that 1, much of this land is either too dry or too sparse to build anything on, or 2, Nigeria is split into socio-political regions whose populations aren't going to easily spill into each other's indigenous lands.

My thought exactly.  Nigeria is a waste of time. One will drive from Lagos to Benin city all you see is bushes, from Lagos to Ibadan all is bushes, from sapele to Warri all you see is bushes, from Warri to Asaba all you see is bushes, from Asaba to Benin City all you see is bushes. development and lack of thinking is killing nigeria. You know how many cities can develop between lagos and Benin city if you give that land to USA or other develop countries are in need of land etc.
You're really suggesting a chain of cities from Lagos to Benin City destroying every natural habitat that has already been lessened to the minimum. I hope when Nigeria is developing people with this sort of thoughts are far away from the controls of a bulldozer.

Alright then, when they're diving Hausa and Fulani traders in Onitca and Aba, we will see if your summary of their capabilities is correct, after all this wouldn't be the first time they do it and the Fulani and Hausa traders are always on watch in case any of their brothers mess up up north. A lot of the 'land' under Port Harcourt is mangrove.

This stuff:

Which is (one of the reasons) why Port Harcourt was built so far in-land.
