Unknown gunmen have abducted three students of the Babington Macurley Junior Seminary (BMJS), Ikorodu, Lagos. The Nation reports that the gunmen, suspected to be dislodged pipeline vandals stormed the school premises located at Agunfoye-Lugbusi village at about 8pm on Monday, February 29 and took three girls away. It was gathered that the armed men who gained entry from behind the school, by breaking the perimeter fence which served as protection for the boarding students.

Report has it that the Lagos state police commissioner, Fatai Owoseni and a team of crack detectives were at the school premises till about 4am on Tuesday. The state command’s spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos who confirmed the incident, said that efforts were working to track the abductors and rescue the girls. “Yea, three female students were taken away by some criminals on Monday night but investigations are on to track then. At this moment, we cannot give you more information but you will be briefed as event unfolds,” she said. However unconfirmed reports has it that the number of the abducted students was more than three, The Punch reports. BMJS is a co-educational secondary institution of Lagos Anglican Dioceses and model private missionary school, was founded on October 18, 1996 by late Most Reverend Joseph Bariga, Lagos in 1859.

Immediate past Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh (rtd) has urged the Federal High Court in Abuja to grant him bail on health grounds.

Badeh has been in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Lagos since February 8, 2016 when he honoured the agency’s invitation for questioning.

Badeh is accused of complicity in an alleged fraudulent transactions involving the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).


Badeh’s request is contained in a bail application he filed before the Federal High Court, Abuja

After the hearing arguments on the application on Monday, Justice James Tsoho fixed March 4 for ruling.

Arguing the application on Monday, applicant’s lawyer, Samuel Zibiri (SAN), who filed the bail application dated February 15, said though the EFCC had granted his client bail, the ex-CDS could not meet it because of the “onerous conditions” attached to it.

He said his client was recovering from a recent surgery and also had a history of kidney stone.

Zibiri hinged the application on Section 35(4) and Section 36(5) of the 1999 Constitution and sections 158, 162 and 165(1) (2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.

He urged the court to grant bail to his client on self recognizance, or on such favourable and liberal terms as the court might deem fit ‎to make.

Zibiri equally prayed the court to grant him bail pending the completion of investigation by the EFCC and/or arraignment before this court.

Badeh’s lawyer argued that the alleged case of fraud for which his client was invited was a bail able offence.

“There is no reason for, or any likelihood that the applicant will jump bail, escape from Justice, interfere with witnesses or investigation if same is still ongoing, or the course of justice upon his being granted bail.

“The applicant has no criminal antecedent or records. The applicant owing to his status in the society can be granted bail on self recognizance, or on the most liberal of terms, as he will be available to attend any invitation by the respondents at all times.

“That the applicant’s health condition is bad and he recently had surgery on his spine which requires constant post-operative follow-up by his physician as well as renal condition which he is currently undergoing treatment for.”

Zibiri said Badeh’s detention by virtue of a remand order issued by a Magistrate’s Court in Lagos “is a gross abuse of the ACJA 2015” insisting he should be granted bail because a Federal High Court is superior to the magistrate court.”

Responding, EFCC’s lawyer, Cosmas Ugwu, in opposing the application, told the court that Badeh had not made any effort to fulfil the administrative bail granted him by the EFCC in Lagos.

“He is in custody in Lagos. Abuja is not holding him, so, the convenient court to grant the applicant bail is a court within the same territorial jurisdiction,” Ugwu argued.

The EFCC lawyer also informed the court that Badeh was being held under a remand order issued by a Lagos magistrate court because he was fingered in the NIMASA fraud allegation.

The Presidency on Monday said President Muhammadu Buhari never promised to pay unemployed graduates N5,000 monthly.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande, said this in an interview with State House correspondents.

Akande, whose boss, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo supervises the economy, spoke while reacting to statement credited to Buhari in which the President ruled out the possibility of his government paying N5,000 monthly allowance to unemployed youths in the country as promised by his party, the All Progressives Congress, ahead of the 2015 presidential election.



He said the provision the government made in the 2016 Budget currently before the National Assembly is to pay N5,000 monthly to one million extremely poor Nigerians, and not the unemployed graduates.

He said the promise to the poor still stands.

He explained that a provision for half a trillion naira had been made in the budget for social investment, which he said included the payment for the extremely poor.

Akande said, “The budget for 2016 which has been submitted to the National Assembly has made an allocation of half a trillion naira, the first time in the history of this country’s budget where you have that huge chunk of money allocated for social investment.

“In that N500bn which is half a trillion naira, close to about 20 per cent of the entire budget, there are six social safety net programmes.

“One of them is the Conditional Cash Transfer where government is going to pay N5,000 monthly to the vulnerable and extremely poor Nigerians. That promise stands.

“The President never promised to pay unemployed graduates N5,000; the President never made that promise and the government never made that claim that it will pay N5,000 to unemployed graduates.

“The programme for unemployed graduates is the direct creation of half a million teaching jobs so that they will be trained; 500, 000 unemployed graduates will be trained to teach and they will be deployed to teach, while they are looking for their career paths or jobs. That still stands!

“In addition to that, there is also a scheme to train 370, 000 non-graduate youths for skill acquisition and vocational training. During the time of that training, they will also be paid.

The All Progressives Congress’ gubernatorial candidate in Rivers State during the 2015 elections, Peterside Dakuku, has blamed the government of Governor Nyesom Wike for the recent escalation of violence in the state accusing it of arming militants and cult gangs, and a lack of commitment to peace and other in the state.
There has been an upsurge of violent clashes between cult gangs, militant groups and armed robbery attacks in the state in recent weeks.
No fewer than 20 people were killed in February alone in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area when cult groups suspected to enjoy the support of politicians invaded several communities in the area. Many of the bodies were decapitated. Others were left with machete and gunshot wounds.
Though Mr. Dakuku acknowledge that some of the clashes are as a result of the perennial mistrust of government and oil exploration companies by host communities, he however, stated that most of the recent clashes were politically motivated; and he places the blame on the doorstep of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state.
In a statement on Sunday, he accused the Wike-led administration of arming the cult groups responsible for the violence in the run up to the 2015 election in its question to violently secure power.
He stated that groups have now become “Frankenstein monsters” the government can no longer control.
“It is regrettable but true that in many communities in Rivers State today cult gangs hold sway. They control the social and economic souls of the people, including traditional structures which have been rendered impotent,” he said.
“The cult gangs were armed by politicians in the build up to 2015 general elections. Like Frankenstein monsters, they are now too powerful to those who armed them and had enjoyed pyrrhic benefits from their activities.
“The situation has so degenerated that nobody, including those who created the monsters, feels safe anymore. The physical landscape of Rivers State communities is painted with boys armed to the teeth and walking about freely to the discomfort of citizens.”
He accused the government of showing no commitment to restoring peace and order to the state. According to him the government, instead of exploring tactful resolution to the insecurity problem has adopted an unhelpful confrontational approach to solving the problem.
“We are yet to feel the effect of any concrete action taken by Nyesom Wike- led Rivers State Government to stem this worsening insecurity. A town hall meeting which he held in Omoku on the urging of Rt. Hon. Andrew Uchendu degenerated into a display of power by way of suspending three Local Government Caretaker Committee chairmen and a strange order to security agents to kill suspected cultists,” Mr Dakuku said.
“The aloofness of the state government has actively promoted the view in the public space that it is behind the prevailing insecurity and free reign of criminals in the state. Nothing challenges a government more than to lose the moral right to fight criminality. When a government persistently fails in its primary duty of securing lives and property, and does not show that it is committed to fighting against those who threaten our peace, the despair of the citizenry can best be imagined.
“Today the people of Rivers state are groaning under the unbearable weight of kidnapping, assassinations, armed robbery, political violence, gun running, harassment, and all forms of criminality. The general question is how long are we going to live like this?”
Mr Dakuku said he feared that insecurity in the state may worsen as the March 19 legislative re-run draws close.
Already the APC candidate in the Rivers State South East Senatorial District re-run election, Magnus Abe, has accused Mr. Wike of planning to assassinate him. The Vanguard newspaper is reporting that Mr Abe said on a Silverbird Rhythm fm 93.7 on Saturday that there had been a meeting of militants in Ogoni on the behest of Mr. Wike to kill him.

If anything happens to me, Nigerians, Rivers, Ogoni people and my family should hold Governor Nyesom Wike and his PDP people responsible because the threat against my life is too much”, he reportedly said during the programme.

President Muhammadu Buhari has declared his total support for a two-state solution to the Israel- Palestine conflict.
The Nigerian President stated this during a meeting on Sunday with the Emir of Qatar, Tamim Bin Hammad Al-Thani, his spokesperson, Femi Adesina, said.
“I want to assure you that we will stand side by side with you, until our brothers and sisters in Palestine achieve their desired objectives,” he said.
“Our support for various Security Council resolutions restoring and respecting 1967 boundaries with Jerusalem as capital of Palestine is firm and unshaken.”
Mr. Buhari’s stance on the Israeli-Palestine conflict is similar with that of most countries of the world including the European Union, and Qatar is believed to be one of the major backers of Palestine including backing Hamas which governs Gaza. However Israel and the United States have repeatedly blocked any United Nations resolution mandating a two-state solution. The non-resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and lack of progress in resolving it is considered the greatest foreign policy failure of President Barack Obama of the U.S.
At the meeting in Qatar, the Nigerian President also declared as “totally unacceptable,” the huge drop in the price of crude which has seen international oil prices plummet from over $100 a barrel last year to about $30.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday in Doha emphasised the need for member states of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC, and non-OPEC members to cooperate and find a common ground to stabilise crude oil prices.
Speaking at a bilateral meeting with the Sheikh Tamim Bin Hammad Al-Thani, the Emir of the State of Qatar, President Buhari described the current market situation in the industry, which has seen oil prices plummet by 70 per cent since mid-2014, as “totally unacceptable.”
“As members of OPEC and Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), our relations in the areas of oil and gas, which our two nations heavily rely on, need to be enhanced and coordinated for the benefit of our people.
“The current market situation in the oil industry is unsustainable and totally unacceptable.
“We must cooperate both within and outside our respective organisations to find a common ground to stabilize the market, which will be beneficial to our nations,’’ the President said on the second day of his state visit to Qatar.
The President used the occasion of his address to the Emir to commend the existing cordial bilateral relations between both countries and invited prospective Qatari investors to take advantage of the abundant opportunities in Nigeria and invest in the key areas of energy, agriculture, real estate development, banking and finance.
He assured prospective investors of government protection of their persons and investment, noting that in the course of his visit, the delegations from Nigeria and Qatar would formalise at least two bilateral agreements to boost economic cooperation between both countries.
President Buhari also weighed-in on the situation in the Middle East, commending the role Qatar is playing in resolving the present Syrian crisis, the Palestinian cause and efforts in reconstructing Gaza.
“The conflicts in Yemen and Syria with their attendant humanitarian crisis need genuine international effort to solve. Nigeria as a peace loving country identifies with the State of Qatar in all her peace efforts in the world to end terrorist activities.
“Nigeria is a victim of terrorism. It is with heavy heart that I stand before you and say activities of Boko Haram have led to loss of many lives and displacement of innocent people in our dear nation.
“We, however, take pride to inform you that since our coming to power, Boko Haram has been systematically decimated and are in no position to cause serious threat to our development programs.
“I wish to reiterate that Nigeria rejects violence and extremism in all their ramifications, and assure your Highness that we are with the State of Qatar in your efforts to fight terrorism and injustice in your region and in the world at large.”
President Buhari also called for a lasting solution to the Israeli – Palestinian conflict , saying “we in Nigeria, like the State of Qatar, favour a ‘Two State’ solution, with the State of Palestine living side by side with the State of Israel.

The Nigeria Army on Saturday established a motorbike battalion to add impetus to its war on insurgency in the Northeast.

Also on Saturday, the Army released a fresh list of 100 suspected members of the terrorist sect, Boko Haram, wanted for various act of terrorism in the country.

The Army also on the same day opened one of the major road leading to Maiduguri, Maiduguri-Damboa-Biu road closed to traffic for over two years as a result of the surge of insurgency in the area.



The Army had late last year published the first set of 100 suspected members of the terrorist sect, Boko Haram wanted by the Nigerian state.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai who launched the Motorbike Battalion of the Nigeria Army at the 25 Task Force Brigade, Damboa, Borno State said the decision for the introduction of the combat motorbike is to ensure that “our roads are safe.”

He said the combat motorbike would ensure a force multiplier effect and give the military an edge in the ongoing counter-insurgency war in the North-East.

He said with the introduction of the combat motorbike “our troops will be able to pursue the Boko Haram anywhere.”

He added that the reach of the motorbike will be very important and will ensure that we can improve on our successes.

On the reopened road, Buratai said: “The road Sent from my iPad

He added that: “The safety on this road is in care of the Brigade Commander of 25 Task Force Brigade. I do not want to hear any attack on this road, motorists plying this road must be safe.”

The COAS appealed to the public to come out with information that will assist in the arrest of terrorists, adding that many terrorists in the first list of 100 wanted were identified and arrested.

He said the new list of 100 suspected terrorists is for the members of the public to identify and report their whereabout so that they could be brought to justice.

He said: “The hundred Boko Haram members declared wanted have their faces on the poster. The members of the public should look at the poster very well and report appropriately.”

On the reopened Maiduguri-Damboa-Biu road, the Secretary of Borno State Chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Adamu Musa, expressed appreciation to the COAS for making it a reality.

He however called for between 20 and 30 checkpoints on the road in order to check against the threat of the terrorist sect.

“Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki has said only his official vehicle, a MercedezBenz, was changed and that the spare car in the convoy is the old one he inherited and has been using since he assumed office June last year.

“Reacting to the claim by Premium Times that the Senate President has taken delivery of vehicles worth N330m, Yusuph Olaniyonu, the Special Adviser, stated that it was wrong for Premium Times to classify vehicles provided for security agencies like the police and State Security Service by the National Assembly management for their operations as vehicles bought for the Senate President.

“It is an obvious fact that the official and spare cars that the Senate President inherited and has been using are old and have been malfunctioning. There are instances like the day Dr. Saraki visited Keffi for the marriage of the daughter of Senator Abdullahi Adamu and another day at the Presidential wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport that the spare vehicle broke down. In both instances, the spare vehicle did not return home with the convoy. The same vehicle had malfunctioned at the Presidential Villa and National Mosque on different occasions. It is for this reason that the Senate President approved that instead of providing two vehicles for him as he is entitled, only one should be bought to replace the official vehicle while the old official car should be converted to spare car.

“Also, if the National Assembly Management chose to provide operational vehicles for Security Agencies, should that be presented as if they are personal or official vehicles meant for the use of Dr. Saraki? These are vehicles that cannot be used for other purposes and by other people. The Senate President also have no control over the security vehicles.

“it is also surprising that despite the fact that Premium Times in the same story reported that the order for the vehicle was made in December, it chose to calculate the value of the vehicles based on current exchange rate of the Naira to the dollar. This is obviously a mischief aimed at making the figure look huge and justify the screaming headline.


“The press should avoid deliberately inciting members of the public against public officials. The Senate President and his colleagues are conscious of the economic situation in the country and will continue to act responsibly and responsively.

“Just last week, Dr. Saraki was informed that the Ministry of FCT in its 2016 budget proposed a N6 billion estimate for the construction of the official residence of the Senate President. He outrightly rejected the proposal and directed Senator Dino Melaye, Chairman, Senate Committee on FCT to bring down the cost to one billion Naira. He said that it should be made known to the Ministry that if it cannot construct the building with N1 billion then they should leave out the project entirely till after his tenure. He said he will rather stay in his present abode. Senator Melaye had already acted as instructed as indicated in the report his committee presented to the Appropriation Committee.

“It should therefore be noted that if Dr. Saraki can demonstrate frugality and responsible leadership in a matter that saved the country so much money, how can it then be presented as if purchase of cars is a big issue that he cares so much about? Those who know the antecedent of the Senate President know that there is no type of vehicle that can excite him at this stage in his life”, Olaniyonu stated.

Senate President, Bukola Saraki, declared in Lagos today that section 4 of the Anti-frivolous petition Bill now popularly known as ‘Anti-Social Media law’ would not see the light of day at the Senate.

Saraki stated this while delivering the keynote address at the StateCraft Masterclass series at Social Media Week, held in Lagos.

Saraki, according to a statement by his Special Assistant on New Media, Mr. Bankole Omishore, emphasised the growing influence of social media users in Nigeria’s political environment.



He then encouraged the audience to continue to contribute to the development of Nigeria through their dialogue and debate on social media.

The senate president said, “Without the involvement of social media, there is no way that we would have moved from a non-performing government because now everything is out in the open unlike years ago.”

Saraki commended the online community, which he described as the real ‘Chairmen of INEC,’ for sourcing election results from polling stations during the general elections, and ensured that the manipulation of vote counts.

He said, “Though we had the numbers. It is really thanks to social media that votes counted because you shared the results as they happened.”

The Frivolous Petitions Bill, sponsored by the Deputy Senate Leader, Bala Ibn Na’Allah, passed second reading on the floor of both chambers of the National Assembly in December last year while the Senate had fixed March this year for the public hearing.

The senate president called for continued cooperation and conversation between the government and the public via social media, and noted that the recent National Assembly Interactive session with Civil Society Organisations was a huge success.

The Benue State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has dismissed the allegations raised by the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Daniel Onjeh, that last Saturday’s election rerun in Benue-South senatorial district was rigged.

The candidate of the APC had alleged that the election was marred by violence and rigging.

Announcing the results on Sunday morning, the Returning Officer, Prof. Ishaku Eneji, declared the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the election, Mr. David Mark, the winner with 84,192 votes against Onjeh’s 71,621.

Onjeh had on Sunday said he would seek the nullification of Mark’s victory at the tribunal on the grounds of over voting, ballot box stuffing and that voters were also induced with N1,000 per vote cast.

But speaking in an interview with our correspondent on Monday, the Publicity Secretary of the PDP in Benue State, Mr. Godwin Ayihe, said since the Independent National Electoral Commission could not have brought more election materials than the number of registered voters, Onjeh’s allegation of over-voting was baseless.

Ayihe said Onjeh was crying foul because he could not reconcile himself with the fact that the people of the state had rejected him.

The PDP spokesperson asked Onjeh to accept defeat in good faith.

He said, “The APC brought out its arsenals and state power against Senator Mark yet they failed because the people of Benue State are tired of the ruling party. The APC is lost in the euphoria of defeat and crying foul because the people have rejected them. If elections are held 100 times in the senatorial district, the PDP would always win.”
