Ohibenemma:
You haven't addressed the bane of my post. What you've mainly done there is speculate. Don't get me wrong...those things - serenity, comfort, and equipping are very important, but will those change the attitude of our lecturers? I doubt.
I finished from Adekunle Ajasin University, which anyone who's been there will call appreciably serene and beautiful. You may also find out from students of OAU how things are over there. The way tribalism held sway in AAU(until I left) was simply alarming. Being non-Ondo and non-yoruba made me a victim several times. Aside that, there you have many lecturers speaking heavilly accented bad English. Will that change with the massive pay rise they're demanding? Those are my questions. While the government has a lot to do, I think there should be some sort of compromise between both parties. And this won't be possible with the current stiff-necked approach by ASUU. We want the universities upgraded, we wanna see laboratories, language studios, serenity, and comfort in our schools, but all of these won't be of much help with the current corrupt, nepotistic* and lazy attitude of our lecturers. Corruption is another problem and sometimes plain inefficiency(there has been cases of equipments being procured, yet unused because our lecturers can't handle them). Let's talk about these too. God bless Nigeria.

Well, you're on point

festusfeezy: ASUU strikes from1999 till date:
1999 -5 months
2001 -3 months
2003 - 6 months (extended to early 2004)
2005 - 3 days
2006 - 1 week
2007 - 3 months
2008 - 1 week
2009 - 4 months
2011 - 3 months extend into 2012
2013 - over 4months and still counting,,,,,
From the above analysis, it's clear there was
never a time FG met 100% of ASUU demands
before they called off the strike. If this is the
case, why has ASUU refused to shift ground even
when FG has met more than 75% of their
demands? From available information, FG has
met all ASUU demands. The only contentious
issue is the ambiguous N92b earned allowance
claim which FG has released N60b to
universities management to pay upon
verification. Is the release of N60b not enough
for a sane organisation to shift ground and allow
Nigerian students enjoy the education they paid
for while negotiation with FG continues?
ASUU has however, continuously refused to tell
Nigerians the contentious issues. The ones FG
has met and the areas it's yet to meet. The
present ASUU represents nothing but deceit and
has lost public sympathy. It's obvious ASUU
strike has become annual event where lecturers
abandon their jobs in public universities for
part-time jobs in private universities. The best
thing for FG is to disaband ASUU so that it won't
have a national body again because it has
become a political tool in the hand of APC to
destabilise GEJ's govt.

They have turn vitually everything into Politics in Nigeria. Op seems you're of the Umbrella Organization.

Ohibenemma: ASUU is being inconsiderate in the course of pursuing their lofty aims. Also, they are being insincere in addressing the problems facing the universities. Will their demands on the government change the terrible sadistic* attitude of our lecturers? Will that clip the wing of their randy tendencies? Will it force them to read more and thereby be more equipped to deliver knowledge? Will it stop the highly tribalistic attributes most of them share? The answer to these IS NO! We need more than beautiful serene environments to impart knowledge, we need more than air conditioned offices to pass the right information and religiously follow course outlines. We need more than equipped laboratories to make students serious, and that's the simple truth!
In our universities, we are forced to wait for hours before lecturers arrive for classes. Sometimes, such classes eventually fail to hold. We find little incentive for conscientiousness when most lecturers award the best grades to the highest bidders. We see students making great grades just on account of their tribal affiliation with the lecturers and we blame the government
Aside the sciences where proper lab equipments are needed to make them worth the salt, why are our social science and art graduates half baked too? Why can't an English graduate speak good english, or even write a letter? Why can't an accounting graduate differentiate between credit and debit sheets? Because the school environment ain't beautiful? Or because the lecture theatres ain't tiled and air conditioned? We need attitudinal changes-lecturers, students and the GOVERNMENT. They are not free from the malaise, and do have their part to play, but ASUU, be sincere for once...and stop pretending to be doing ALL of THIS for the SAKES of Nigerian students.ASUU is being inconsiderate in the course of pursuing their lofty aims. You may be right, but at least let's have that good air-conditioned lecture theatres, good and well equipped state-of - the art laboratories, 25 students to a Prof.(lecturer), good, neat serene and aesthetic learning environment, consistent and uninterrupted power supply & internet facilities, uninterrupted academic calendar,2 students to a room with fully equipped hostels, just like is obtainable in top-ranked universities in the world. With all these being put in place by Govt., it will surely address other shortcomings or defect if not completely but to the bearest minimum. The issue of attitudinal change & other defects will fall in place, but worthy to note that even after all these, it will not prevent the few bad eggs to fall to their old ways, but it will be under control, even in the so-called top-ranked unis have their cons, not to talk of Nigerian universities that are still in the bud. We need total overhaul of the whole educational system, dear. Know that Environment and welfare psychologically motivates learning directly or indirectly. No wonder they say cleaniness is next to Godiliness, then I add serene and good environment is next to learning. Let's breathe that fresh air in our institution, even if it's only once. I rest my case!

Seconded, that's just the Nigerian thing Everybody want to graduate out of our deplorable Public institutions, be it half-baked, full-baked, roasted or not baked at all, as long as it has something to do with baking. We all want to be churned out of the Mill, no matter the state of the flour, to join the wagon of already churned out flour in the labour market.Nobody care about quality again, but rather quantity. And yet we keep complaining that we are not being priced by employers(marketers)The FG knows about this Nigerian mentality '' At all at all, na em bad pass, let just manage the system like that, at least the one we see. The same FG will say that Nigerian graduates are unemployable. Ok, we will keep on managing until we'll have nothing to manage again. Let's think, and avoid being blinded by the fact. It's time we persist, just 4 months and Nigerian are already shaking and seeing ASUU as the Devil. Why won't FG win, since she knows our soft spot.

Well, three years in medical school may work properly in developed world, where those three years will be judiciously used to drill you in medical ethics and practice to become a better medical practitioner. But for third world country like Nigeria, despite the almost 7 years( service included), we spent in Medical School, the crop of medical practitioners we have now is nothing to write home about. Not trying to be sarcastic about my country or the profession here in Naija, there're still the very bests in Naija. But for a 3 -year medical school, while other courses that doesn't pertain to life exceed 3 years of training. It can't just work in Nigeria.

Its all about their allowances, I was on their side till I read their requests which are unrealistic and almost evil. We students are at home cuz they want 2 travel abroad with the Govt payin 4 all their expences, its very unfair and inconsiderate. May God 4give Both Fg nd ASUU

Believe me, if they call it up without government heeding to their demands:

1. The school fees of federal institutions will increase by 300%. And this alone will generate chains of protest by students and their unions, even after this long strike action and this maybe even worse, because some bad students will hijack the opportunity to cause more mayhem to school facilities more than what ASUU Strike has done already.

Why should you say such, this man is fighting the course of our decayed educational system, believe it or not, and change our university system for good, Universities keep on churning out half-baked graduate and you're already in that league. Instead of you to appreciate that fact. We are always blinded by the fact in that nobody is happy with strike. Know that Government has every mechanaries on ground to give the public the wrong impression about ASUU. If It means that ASUU should persist to get what they want, I am in support of that, instead of suspending it on air and just to go back following government deciept. Govt have decieved them for long, enough is enough. But come to think of it, a 2.2 isn't that bad afterall, but would have be much better if the 2.2 will reach at least within the range of 3.39 to 3.42, I.e something very close to a 2.1. So you can do Masters direct,if you want to further though. Well the job market is quite competitive, but I know some people are better off with 2.2 anyway. So don't be discouraged, but just strive to get closer to a 2.1(I.e a higher 2.2). If you can't get to the moon, at least you can rest on the stars closer to the moon instead of falling back on earth- just an adage and a food for thought.

I can boldly tell u dat majority of d lecturers especially d profs among dem are lamenting in university of ibadan.d adamant ones among dem are d young lecturers which are only interested in making quick money to build mansions overnight. Federal government can end d strike immediately by using d style d then unilorin VC prof shamsodeen used in ilorin. Fg should direct all d VCs to call all d lecturers back to their respective institutions or face d consequences of being sacked. I am sure most senior lecturers will be happi to return to classrooms cos d lecturers are only happy wen they lecture. D rest of d lecturers dat dont come to class if there is any should be sacked. Even in the face of everything, they always say Nigerian graduates are unemployable. Our Certificates from different Institutions in Nigeria has already lost it's value long ago in the eyes of international communities and this impending strike will have more serious adverse effect on Nigerian qualifications by dragging our already battered Certificates and qualifications down the drain, of which the credibility will take long to salvage, should this strike extends any further. Each day this strike extends, the value of our Certificates from our Public institutions are lost by the day. Because the international communities are watching and observing.

Nigerian Universities' Certificates RIP!

Elvishard: My Idea on how to end this boring strike. ASUU need to look for other means to sanction FG.
THIS IS IT
1. lecturer form an Association behind our back called ASUU?
2. The SUG president of each university in 9ja will com 2geda and form a student association.
3. And with all skuls united, they will make an announcement dat all students should get back to skul. So as to show our degree of seriousness.
4. And if all students comply and get back to skul, ofcourse they will not see any lecturer to teach dem.So d heads of the students association will meet with FG, and tell dem dat students are in skul but there are no lecturers to lecture dem.
4. Now wat they will bargain with FG is dat if dose ASUU lecturers refuse to come back within a week, they should employ new batch of lecturers.
5. We have alot of graduates in dis country dat are ready to lecture, and in no time all lecturers is dis country will b replace.
Even some lecturers dat r not ready to loose their job will hop back in no time.
And b4 ur very eyes d ASUU association will loose shape.
The fear of loosing their job will cause a nuclear fission in the ASUU.
I guess I may b CAPITALLY WRONG. just tick (√) if u support my Idea or (X) if u dont.
