RECENTLY, in effort to eliminate Ebola at the source, through use of innovative disinfection technology, two “germ-killing robots” were deployed from the US to the JFK Hospital and ELWA Hospital both in Monrovia, Republic of Liberia, both hotspots of the Ebola disease outbreak.

The robots, technically known as TRU-D SmartUVC, were used to disinfect health care environments where Ebola patients are being treated. Good Health Weekly gathered that TRU-D is the only portable UV disinfection device on the market with Sensor360 technology, which calculates the time needed to react to room variables such as size, geometry, surface reflectivity and the amount and location of equipment in the room and effectively deliver a lethal dose of UV-C light during a single cycle from a single, central location in the room.

“It works by generating ultraviolet light energy that modifies the DNA structure of viral pathogens, like Ebola, so that they cannot reproduce. Viruses that cannot reproduce cannot colonise and harm patients,” the inventor, a tropical disease expert and medical anthropologist Dr. Jeffery L. Deal noted in an interview.

The robotic technology is capable of making the Liberian hospitals safer for the staff and for new patients.

Development
It was developed by a team of engineers, physicians and industrial hygienists with the purpose of decontaminating entire rooms automatically and eliminating concerns that a contaminated surface was missed during routine cleaning.
We use an ultra-efficient narrow wavelength called UVC to flood the room with germicidal energy. UVC dosage is accurately measured and automatically adapts to kill organisms, even in shadowed areas.

ABUJA — A group, Nigeria Interest Group, NIG, has called on the Federal Government to post-humously confer the title of Grand Commander of the Order of Niger, GCON, on late Dr. Ameyo Adadevoh for her humanitarian and patriotic display of courage in handling the Ebola disease in the country.

The title being sought for the late medical practitioner is the second highest in the country and so far, only two business moguls, Alhaji Aliko Dangote and Chief Mike Adenuga, have been conferred with it alongside present and past vice presidents.
The group, which noted that the late physician paid the supreme price in her attempt to stop the spread of Ebola virus in the country, also commended other health practitioners for their humanitarian and patriotic display of courage which had led to several victims of Ebola being successfully treated and discharged.

The group, at a press briefing by its Director General, Mr. Jim Elueni, in Abuja, yesterday, applauded President Goodluck Jonathan, the Federal Executive Council and the Federal Ministry of Health for the quick and pro-active response to the Ebola out-break in the country.
It noted that it was because of the commendable measures adopted that the casualty figure of infected persons became low.
It also thanked the Federal Government for its recent donation of N200 million to the Lagos State government to assist the state in the fight against the Ebola virus.

The group, which said it was out to enlighten Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora on the gains of the present federal administration, canvassed support for re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan in next year’s general elections, saying in spite of some problems confronting his administration, the President was determined to take Nigeria to the promised land.

YENAGOA — A carcrushed to death a 26-year-old boy at a popular viewing centre along Sani Abacha Road in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital, while he and several others were watching the Super Falconets of Nigeria and Germany Under-20 Female World Cup final in the early hours of yesterday.

The incident, which occurred at about 1.30 am triggered pandemonium at the bar some distance from NNPC filling station as fun seekers and those watching the match scampered for safety.

Most of the eyewitnesses could not explain how the driver of the Honda Sports Utility Van, SUV, crashed into the crowd of football fans and fun seekers in the bar.

The driver of the vehicle, it was learnt, had attempted to drive out of the car wash section of the bar where the vehicle was parked when it rammed into the crowd.

A customer, identified as Biggy, who escaped death by the whiskers, confirmed that the deceased used to work in a bakery.

Two other girls reportedly sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the hospital.
According to an eyewitness, “the driver must have stepped fully on the accelerator and drove straight at us. I and some other dived out of his path but the boy was unlucky.

The vehicle crushed him and dragged him into the club.” Some other persons dancing inside the club were also injured.”
