Neddstark:
Have you heard of any unrest in China lately? The answer is no.
This is because their government knows that information is power and can change alot of things so they intentionally limit a lot that goes into the country except what will actually develop them like technology. Love them or hate them but this system is very effective. They understand that civil unrest in a highly populated China can destabilize what their country has attained in 4 decades within 4 weeks.
As much as I am for freedom of information, the extent #endsars influencers went by inciting youths to disobey a government and playing down a curfew should not be tolerated in a fragile democracy like ours. I knew there was a hand behind this was hours after the tollgate shooting, the fatalities were inflated and fake images were being circulated everywhere to propagate their cause and encourage anarchy. Fake news is the new weapon of mass destruction. It is the duty of the government to ensure peace and if shutting them down will do, so be it.
Of course their Nairaland crew will insult me and sheeples who reason out of sentiments will support them. Just know this, a society without law and order is finished.
We will insult you because you deserve it. angry

The government is lying and killing it's own civilians and because the big men in power don't want any punishment they are trying to clamp down on it. Why do you think they are scrambling to fight CNN and begging the UK?

In China they are putting millions of Muslims and ethnic minorities in concentration camps and killing some on flimsy claims of terrorism. The Hong Kong protest went on because the people there know what it means to be ruled by China. The Chinese government even kills or imprisons politicians who don't agree with their current leader. If PDP was doing it now you'll be squealing like a pig but because it's APC it is OK you dirty hypocrite. angry

Freedom of expression is not the same as access to platforms. If that were the case child porn and illegal trade sites will not be blocked. Even freedom of expression has its limit. Given the legal ignorance of this group, it is safe to assume their sponsors and aim.
Don't worry very soon the opposition party will block all APC affiliated sites in 2023 since that is how we want to do.

can't you mention Kano?

There is only one correlation between his holding brief for the NA and his promotion. That correlation is that he is intellectually sound hence the reason force hq permitted him to defend the Army in the first place. That does not at the same time mean that he was promoted for defending the Army. From what I saw of his performance he is very sound, no doubt he is of the Intelligence Corp

Nigeria the backwards country.

Where terrorists get fed, celebrated and released.

Where journalists and protesters are killed and arrested.

Where soldiers get promoted for dishonesty.

Doesn't work that way for the same reason your landlord can't wake up and throw you out.
These users contribute immensely to the development of these platforms and for some of them it's a deserved source of livelihood haven't put in thousands of hours and contents
But if I break the terms of my rent agreement my landlord can throw me out. Twitter, unlike rent, is free it is also not funded by the government. If Twitter was a government platform Trump would have a point but it's not.

I'm sure you're old enough to remember MySpace and how it died unceremoniously when Facebook took over. What about Usenet or Digg? They died and life went on, people moved to other platforms. Twitter too will die one day and the arguments had there will be an afterthought but you're ignoring the serious consequences this could have for the Internet as a whole.

Don't let Trump's short sighted quarrel with Twitter ruin the most revolutionary tool of the modern era.

Complaining?
The complaints against some of these platforms are numerous.

The platforms are protected from third party legal actions of they remain as platforms and don't take up publishers responsibilities by vetting what should be said and what shouldn't.

The platforms automatically assumes responsibility when they started vetting contents. And rightfully so, the immunity should be rescind

The freedom of the individual must be protected and not the existence of these Giants.
Or you could just use another website.

Read up the thread I believe justli explained it good enough.
Sorry but what he said is completely out of touch with what the law is about and is only complaining because Trump is affected. I have explained this before here.

Farki:
The bill is stupid because then Twitter is being punished for what the users said. If you have a problem take it up with the user.

Would you sue a paper company for the words of a book writing slander against you?

How will this work when a large number of users are bots or troll accounts?
This law doesn't just affect twitter but EVERY American social media site. If you want every webpage to be a static collection of curated posts because the hosts don't want to break the rules you're welcome to support Trump here.

SARS no longer exist except they mean South Africa Revenue Service (SARS).

We will soon find out from government what happened. Enough of one-sided stories.
Which government?

The one that said no soldiers went and changed it's story later?

The one that seized passports and blocked bank accounts?

Only a fool would expect a government that killed it's people before to tell the truth now.

The word Friday is already named after the Germanic fertility goddess Frieya. In fact all the days and months are either named after Roman gods, German gods or emperors.

In fact the Hisbah should arrest themselves because they are also BLACK.

We should go even further and tell them that Friday is named after a German pagan goddess. grin

900warriorz:
Abeg, who understand the news should come and summarize for us grin
That section 230 is a law which protects Internet platforms, most notably social media and chat rooms for being liable legally for the messages their users send. It makes the distinction between a publisher and a platform for example if Punch newspapers sold notebooks and I planned to bomb third mainland bridge and wrote the plans in the notebook Punch wouldn't be legally liable for being an accessory to terrorism. If Punch however wrote an editorial, not a report, an opinion piece and guide on how to bomb the third mainland bridge the operators of the newspaper would be arrested for being accessories to terrorism.

It was debated previously because Trump, for whatever reason best known to him, wanted to scrap it.

The problem here is that now Twitter will be even more strict with their moderation policies and that affects Trump because anything he posts for example "We will destroy North Korea" or endorsement of attacks on public officials can now be blamed on Twitter and be grounds for them to ban him.

To make the long talk short if I plan to commit a crime on nairaland, Seun and the mods can be arrested because they host the site.
