You better use sawdust. With lactobacillus serum, you can control the smell.

I dont know how often. But if I'm to do it myself, I will apply 2x - when the tuber starts forming and 2 months before harvesting. But note that irrigation is needed after applying.

As for alternative to Rocket, I don't know. But I believe you will find if you search hard enof.

This is not true. Before advance in medicine, death rate was high. But with more knowledge gained, it reduces. Those people that died did so because there was lack of knowledge.
