Something we should think about when we make the statement 'poverty is a disease'. I've always felt it was an unfortunate thing to believe but I couldn't wrap my head around why I didn't agree with the statement. If we have a country where they great majority of 200 million people believe poverty is a disease, how will they treat the poor among them? Should they be surprised that after teaching their kids 'poverty is a disease', those kids become governors and employers and abuse the poor among them? How about treating people who aren't wealthy like lepers and outcasts...is this uncommon in Nigeria? All of these things have casual roots.

Not that poverty is anything to celebrate, but poverty is poverty. It's not a disease and there's nothing wrong with a poor person. I think it's time to get rid of that statement. Nigeria's inability to show humanity to the poor is a bigger issue than poverty it's self.

Governments destroy entire industries over night (markets, Okada, Keke, farms), so long as they belong to the poor.
Governments destroy entire neighborhoods over night without compensation, so long as they belong to the poor.
Governments take land and property from the poor in Nigeria, without compensation or warning.
Hospitals, Schools etc that cater to the poor are not only underfunded and unkempt, their neglect is seen as a natural consequence of what the people in it deserve by many Nigerians.
The poor have less access to decent treatment by police, politicians (until it's time to vote), etc.

We cannot create hell on earth for people because they don't have money, and we cannot regard not having money as 'a disease'.

The rich can lose everything withing eye blink. Everything is luck.
