Lawlek: My experience on the US B1/B2 Visa application.
I paid for the visa application sometime in February this year. Myself, my wife and 3 kids. I filled the online forms myself and booked appointment for a datw in March (9:45am) with plans to travel in April.
On the day for the interview, we were turned back due to irregular appointment number. It was only my number that reflected on all other co-applicants appointments. We were told to reschedule in 72 hours.
I did as was told and choose, a date in May and also changed the date of our planned vacation to July.
Fast forward to May. We got to the Lagos office very early in the morning. Paid the usual #500 for parking. We ate our breakfast first and then proceeded to the queue and in we went because everything was alright this time.
After a lady confirmed out appointment etc, we joined the queue for the biometric. Myself, my wife and my 14 year old son. The other 2 children were younger than 14, so no need for biometric. After this, we again joined the queue for the interview proper. It was as if it was the judgment day. We could clear hear other visa applicants confessing before the VO. Some were almost begging, I could hear some lying with a straight face.
We were directed to cubicle 8. The VO was all smile. He was the same guy that did our biometric. The lady (applicant) directly before me was denied. My turn
VO: Good morning, immediately looking at his computer screen Me: Good morning
VO: You are a .... (My job)? Me: Yes.
VO: What is ...(a question only my professional colleagues would know). Me: I defined the term without blinking nor 2nd thought.
VO: How many years have you been in practice of your trade? Me: 8 years now.
VO: What Company do you work for? Me: Named the Company sharply.
VO: Tell me about your daily work. Me: I coincisely narrated my daily assignment.
VO: Hello Ma'am (my wife) where do you work? My wife: I work with the Lagos State Government.
VO: Where? My wife: Local Government.
VO: Which local government? My wife: ... Local government.
VO: What level are you? My wife: Level 9.
VO: Why are you traveling? Me: Family Vacation.
VO: Do you know anyone in the US? Me: No.
VO: Which State are you going in the US? Me: Miami, Florida.
VO: How long do you intend to stay in the US? Me: Just 2 weeks.
VO: Do you have any other kids aside from these 3? Me: No. Just these 3.
VO: Do you guys have travel experiences? Me: Yes.
VO: Where and where? Me: UK, Germany, Spain and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
VO: You madam? My wpaperKingdom of Saudi Arabia.
VO: Where are the Visas? I can't find them in your international passports? Me: Yes, they are in our old international passports.
VO: And where are they? Me: I left them in the car. I was told not to bring them in.
VO: Who told you not to bring them in?
He continued... Reaching for a white paper, he quickly wrote m case number, the date, my surname and marked the portion ...You are requested to provide additional documentation and then he wrote old passport.
VO: Show this document to the security, it will let you out and let you back in. Go and bring your old passports.
Me: OK Sir. Taking fast strides.
Upon my return from the car, with our old passports in hand, I went straight to him, with my family. He carefully went through all my visas and the one on my wife's old passport.
VO: Can I have all the passports back? Me: Passed it to him sharperly.
He scanned them all again. He then looked up at me.
VO: Congratulations Mr. ..., your visas have been approved, you shall be contacted by the DHL office Victoria Island in 72 hours via text messages or email to come and pick up your Visas.
Me: Thank you Sir.
It was our first attempt and we received the text messages and email in 72 hours. We have our visas now and the travel plans is in top gear. We booked the hotel. congratulations all d best to u guys |

Kunle2030: Hi everyone, i have been following this thread for months and its been very insightful and helpful..ill like to share my experience.
I have been refused a us visa four times before my this..i was refused 15 years ago twice when i applied for a student visa in lagos which was in 2003.
I moved to germany in 2014 through my wife who is a german citizen and we have 2 young sons.i have my residency here in germany.
So after i decided to try for a us visa in 2016 stating i was travelling with my wife and children and i was again refused for the 3rd time.
I didnt give up and decided to try again this year in march cos my wife wanted us to visit newyork with the kids.my wife and kids have german passports but i only have residence permit.
Even though i earned about 3000 euros a month and have a fairly decent job i was refused for the 4th time cos the vo asked for my proof of income and bank statement and when i gave him he said my balance was low and rejected me for the 4th time.
Stubborn as i was i decided to try again last week and saved up some money and my bank balance was healthy so i tried for the 5th time and the interview went thus:
Vo: good morning, place your fingers on the scanner
Me:good morning and i did
Vo:why all these refusals?u were here recently?
Me:yes i have been refused 4 times before now and the first 2 refusals were 15 years ago when i was living in lagos and never been abroad in my life and twice since i moved to germany and most recent refusal was in march this year
Vo:ok let me look at the notes from your interview in march..right all i want to see is your bank statement and payslips.
Me:ok i gave him
Vo: he looked at the bank statement thoroughly and picked a random payslip and said show me where this money is in your bank statement and i directed it to him.
VO:where are u visiting and how long?
Me:i told him im visiting newyork for 10 days with my wife and kids
VO:looking at me he said this is one of those 50 50 decisions for me and he continued to say that for about 50 seconds looking at me.he then kept quiet for a while and started typing and looked up and said how am i sure u are going to come back
Me:i love my job and it provides me a decent living and i cant abandon it.my wife and children live here in germany with me and i have visited many countries in europe and never overstayed.
VO:looked at me in awkward silence for a while and said ok im approving this visa today.pls dont let me down.if u go and return u will get a US visa for life and if u dont u will never get a US visa.take care of your lovely kids
Me:i was so emotional and thanked him for giving me the benefit of doubt.this was my fifth attempt.
Anything is possible if u believe and have genuine intentions. This is a fantastic forum and it helped me a lot reading these pages even at work like a bible.
I wanted to ask if i could travel alone cos my wife 2 days ago received a letter in the post for her dream job interview and unfortunately it falls in the period we are originally scheduled to travel as a family and this is the only time i will be free to travel cos of my work.im only staying in newyork for 10 days..will it be a problem to travel alone even though i said in my ds 160 im travelling with my wife and children?pls guide me touching story and nice one congrats and dont let us down also |

Then the other passenger alighted(in front of some banks) and gave the driver 100 dollars against 100 Naira. The driver pretended to be overwhelmed with joy, and I was even telling him, instead of being happy, he should check if the money is fake or original.
The next thing he said was "do I know where they change money" so we can assist the foreigner... I told him bluntly, he should let me alight and they should sort things out, me wey never see dollar hold before go no where dem dey change am... The stupid foreigner was even speaking oyinbo for me. I quickly alighted.

NanaOne1: Had my interview last week in Ghana with mum and were granted 5 yrs visa Profile: Just join another bank in January so I was just 4 months at post. Traveled 3 times to the UK, Portugal, 4 times to Nigeria and then Turkey. I am attending my graduation with mum. I earn 6000 cedis and have a car for Uber (2000 cedis monthly)
When we were third in the queue to be interviewed, someone who was just granted told us about a VO who is very friendly and good in one of the windows. Just when it was our turn, that VO was free (and I thanked God) but one of the workers told us to wait cus she wanted to talk to him (I was like Holy Mary, I cast all the village people following us oo ) I continued praying for none of the other VOs to be free and God being soo good, the lady finished and my "favorite" VO called us (I thanked God) VO: Good morning Mum and I: Good morning VO: Who is she to you Me: Shes my mother VO: Passport please Me: Gave him our passports (I had my three passport stapled together so without saying anything, he flipped through all my passports and checked my VISAs. I had a UK rejection stamp during my school days somewhere in 2002 which he wasnt familiar with the stamped so he went to consult). NB: I traveled to UK in 2016 VO: Where are you going Me: I just graduated from so so and so University and the school is organizing a commencement ceremony and have invited all graduates, families and friends so we are attending (I made a slight mistake) VO: Excuse me so when did you graduate and you are attending a graduation again Me: Sorry, I just completed my MBA program and we are attending my graduating ceremony VO: Ok VO: Madam Where do you work Mum: Answered VO to mum: Are you married Mum: Widow VO: How many children do you have Mum: Answered VO to me: Where do you work Me: so so and so Bank VO : Are you married Me: Not yet, I am engaged and I am getting married to my beautiful fiancée on 4th august. I have already made arrangements and I have the receipts of the venue and also invitation card (He didnt check) VO: Do you have invitation from the school Me: Gave him VO: Do you mind if I keep it Me: Not at all. please keep it (It was genuine so I didnt care) VO: Your passport will be ready by Friday, he gave us a paper)
NB: I prepared very well for the interview and had my own interview questions with detailed answers which I practiced for about two weeks and prepared same for mum. No document was asked or checked apart from the introduction letter from the school
I must say it is God who made our interview very easy for us and infact I was a bit disappointed how the interview when because all my rehearsals were not put to use . Baba God may your name be praised.
Just prepare the application yourself, do not lie, and read wide on similar interview on this forum and another forum i got tips from was https://www.immihelp.com/experience/view-52-29-usavisitorvisa_b2visa.html even though its for Indians
Thanks to you all and people like Seyewest and others answered some of my questions. Thank you and I wish all applicants the best of luck. I feel lazy reading through my writeup so forgive me, if there are mistakes congrats to u guys |

johnime: A thread on why PREPAID METER being distributed TO ALL may never be achieved in Nigeria. After the Nigerian Police, Nigerian Electricity distribution companies are next on the list when it comes to corruption. This has been in existence from time immemorial, just like barracks, many government have come and gone but the deep rooted corruption in the system remains
In April 2016, I moved in to my current apartment. The apartment was still connected to an old meter and there was an outstanding payment of about N385,000.00 to be paid. This wasn't revealed to me before I made payment for the rent, as usual (that's how they all do). This became a worry and an absolute headache. I asked the landlord why it was so and she made me understand that the apartment was not in use for 5years.I asked how come it wasn't reported to NEPA so they'd stop the billing, she gave me a copy of the letter she wrote to them. So I took the matter up, wrote several mails to Eko electricity company and the matter was on for 11months, note that in the space of this 11 months, I never got a monthly bill lesser than 24,000.00. You want to ask if I have a factory in my apartment? No I don't. So it extended from wanting the company to zerorize the ridiculous outstanding balance in the billing account to fighting and contesting the outrageous billing system which do not in any way represent my true electricity consumption and wanting a Prepaid Meter
The battle began. After several exchange of mails betweens myself and Eko Electric and no solution was forthcoming, I moved the matter to NERC, the regulatory body for all electricity distribution companies in Nigeria. I filed a petition against Ekedp and the undertaking in charge of my area.
Lo and behold, after three days from the petition submission to NERC, I got a call from the marketing manager for my area pleading for me to make myself available to allow them come to my house and take inventory of the electrical appliances I use.
NERC is working yeah? Right. A staff of the Ekedp came to take the inventory and at the end of the computations, we calculated and multiplied each appliance by the estimated units they consume per day and multiplied by 31days.
Recall I said I never got a bill less than 24k in a month? Then we arrived at a figure that even the Eko electric staff who came to take the inventory opened his mouth and couldn't close it. What I should be billed based on having 24hour light per day(which is not even possible) in 31 days was 4,800.00. I almost ran mad. I took a copy of the report, scanned it and attached it to my next petition to NERC. At this point, the marketing manager attached to my undertaking had started calling and begging me to stop the petitions. That they could all get sacked if matters gets escalated further. Then in September 2017, after all the troubles and how I never got tired if pursuing the issue, I got a mail from Eko electricity to come with some required documents in order to fill a form for a PREPAID METER.
I went there and did as they requested. At Last, on 27 November 2017, I was on leave. I was at my gate then this Alfa looking guy was parading and trying to see house number on the fence. My instinct told me to ask if he was asking for Ayo, then he said yes. He was the prepaid meter installer, he was with my new prepaid meter. I also recall that before the whole issue started, I was discouraged severally that I can never be given prepaid meter due to the outstanding balance on the billing account, I paid no mind to all the people that said that and went ahead with my case. I got the Prepaid meter for FREE. After a week, bill was brought and boom, outstanding balance has been cleared from 385,000.00 to zero balance. How did I achieve this? I mean I didn't pay a dime to anyone and I never for once bribed my way in all my dealings.I achieved this simply because;
1. I knew my right. 2. I wouldn't settle for mediocrity 3. I never stopped pushing even after several months and it seemed unachievable 4. I was ready to take the matter up anywhere 5. I was informed.
Now imagine how many people are out there who don't even know how to go about such tedious and draining process. I learnt that a lot of people even paid as much as 40k to get the prepaid meter. Something that's supposed to be free. Since the prepaid meter was installed in November 27 2017, I have not exhausted the 303 units that came with it which is calculated to be 7,200.00
And I still have 140units left to use. That's over four (4) months now Do you now see why these people will never allow dream of every homes having a prepaid meter become a reality? Because such development will block all holes where the electricity distribution corrupt members of staff perpetrate their fraudulent activities and corruption from.
They know that they will be forced to give light more in order to generate revenue and will not be able to charge people outrageously as they are currently doing and remitting the proceeds of their criminal act to their pockets.
Stand up and Fight for what is your right. Prepaid meter is your right, fight for it to the latter. If you believe that your monthly electricity bill do not represent your consumption, make a case.If you're in Lagos, Ikeja Electricity company and Eko electricity company are there for you. If they fail, involve NERC. That will be all, for now.
Due to popular demand, these are the email addresses you can forward your complaints to - Ikeja Electricity Distribution - customercare@ikejaelectric.com Eko Electricity Distribution - customercare@ekedp.com Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission - complaints@nerc.gov.ng good one |
