Please let me explain to those of us who don't understand Economic terms. Dollar has not increased since Buhari became president.

1. Dollar is not our currency so dollar should not be our business.

2. Our problem is not d government but our problem is our importers and consumers.

3. Naira has remained at 197 naira to 1 dollar since Buhari became president.

4. Buhari has promised not to devalue the Naira and he has maintained that promise.

5. Both at CBN and at interbank rates, dollar has remained 197.

6. However because we are too lazy to produce what we use in Nigeria we import even toothpicks and matches.

7. Buhari does not like d importation of luxury goods because luxury goods is d reason for most corruption, that is why he banned 41 products from having access to forex.

8. However when Nigerian importers insisted on importing those 41 products, FG asked them to find their dollar at d BDCs parallel market also known as black market.

9. And to discourage the pressure Nigerians are mounting on the Naira just to get dollars for importation, CBN banned DMBs from selling dollars to BDCs.

10. To survive the pressure of excess dollar demands, BDCs resorted to sourcing for dollars from neighbouring countries through illicit money laundering routes.

11. Because of the risks faced by BDCs to source for dollars, and because of the increase in demand for dollars by importers because China just resumed from their business holidays, BDCs keep increasing the price at which they exchange dollars to naira and now it is 400 naira to 1 dollars.

12. However that does not mean that govt has changed the exchange rate because if our genuine importers go to CBN and fill Form M to import raw materials for local production, they will get dollars at 197 naira each.

13. So the problem is that we love to consume luxury foreign products yet we are too lazy to manufacture them here.

14. For example u will see a dull girl using iPhone 5 without even knowing simple physics and computer engineering part of how that phone was produced.

15. I want Buhari to ban every foreign product from Nigeria until Nigerians learn to produce and use Made in Nigeria products.

16. Let us stop complaining about dollar as if dollar has become Nigeria's currency.

17. It is even bad enough that most of those complaining about the high exchange rate of dollar do not have 1 single dollar in their purse.

Many Nigerians are complaining about the
constant fall in the value of the Naira and they
blame the Government.
But is the government really to blame? In truth,
our insatiable appetite for all things foreign is to
blame.
I always fly Arik Business Class whenever I am
traveling abroad except Arik does not fly on that
route.
Not only is an Arik ticket a fraction of the cost of
a British Airways ticket, but the money I pay to
Arik circulates in Nigeria and helps firm up the
Naira's value.
As I speak to you today, a British Airways
Business to London is ₦2,103,666 while Arik
Business is ₦551,545 yet our elite still fly BA
But though Arik offers an affordable alternative to
British Airways and other foreign airlines, our big
men prefer to pay double what Arik charges to BA
and other foreign airlines for the same services
and yet they complain about the value of the
Naira.
I have Nasco cornflakes and I have eaten Kellogs
cornflakes. In terms of nutrition and taste they
are almost indistinguishable. Yet our elite who
will rather eat Kellogs than Nasco cornflakes,
wonder why the Naira is falling!
Even something like Quaker Oats can be
substituted with corn meal known locally as pap.
Obasanjo Farms of Nigeria and other large scale
poultry farms have the capacity to provide
chicken for the entire nation. Since that is the
case, why are we even buying imported chicken?
In fact what is wrong if every family in Nigeria
has a poultry in their backyard to give them eggs
and meat?
My steward went to Makoko, which is one of the
largest fishing communities in Lagos. He wanted
to buy fish and they were selling imported frozen
fish!
Yet in the very waters in front of them, there exist
fresh fish that is more nutritious than the cheap
frozen fish they were selling.
We keep spending over 1 Billion Naira importing
rice when our own farmers are capable of
meeting our national demand for rice. But for
some reason, Nigerians just prefer to buy
imported rice.
The imported rice we buy in Nigeria is not as
good as our local rice because it has been stored
for years in silos and treated with chemicals.
Moreover, every time you buy it, your money is
going out of Nigeria to service an economy in
Asia. The end result is that their currency gains
value while ours loses value.
Have you ever wondered why European
Premiership Clubs are so interested in Nigeria? It
is because Nigerians spend billions traveling to
Europe to watch their games, buy their
merchandise and promote their leagues.
Yet, back at home, we would not be caught dead
watching our own local league.
If we will not spend money on made in Nigeria
goods and services, how can we expect our Naira
to hold its value and appreciate?
Obviously we can not cut ourselves off from the
world. No nation is an island, but at least we can
fly Nigerian airlines, eat locally produced food and
patronize our football league.
If we do this, not only will our economy grow and
produce jobs for Nigerians, it will also make our
goods and services improve in value such that
they will be attractive enough to be imported.
I bought Innoson vehicles as official cars for my
staff. I have never lived to regret it one day. They
are comfortable and durable. But most of all, I
know that my purchase helps to keep jobs in
Nigeria and improve the value of the Naira.
I urge you to do the same. We have no other
country but Nigeria and it is you and I that will
make it what it is.

The Senate and the House of Representatives on Saturday said they would go ahead with the purchase of exotics for its members.

Members of both chambers of the National Assembly, who spoke to our correspondent separately, stated that lawmakers needed the vehicles to function efficiently.

The Senate plans to procure cars worth about N4.7bn, the House will spend between N3.4bn and N4.2bn on choice brands for its 360 members.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Sabi Abdullahi, told one of our correspondents that the leadership of the upper chamber was expecting the invitation of President Muhammadu Buhari over the plan to purchase ‘project vehicles’ for the use of the various committees.

Buhari had during the last presidential media chat pledged to initiate a meeting with the leadership of the National Assembly on the issue but the parley had yet to hold several weeks after.

But the Senate spokesperson said since the proposed meeting was an initiative of the President, the leaders of the red chamber would wait until they were invited.

Abdullahi said, “There is no way we won’t buy the project vehicles for the use of the committees. It is the consideration of the 2016 budget at both chambers that has delayed it. The money has to be appropriated for. We are still buying the vehicles”

He added, “There is no way we can exercise our legislative functions especially in the area of oversight, using our personal cars.

“We need official vehicles to move around the country because we do not have to rely on government agencies under our supervision for such logistics if we really have to carry out an unbiased exercise.

“Nigerians should also note that we are not asking for too much by requesting for Sport Utility Vehicles as official vehicles because there is no senator or members of the House of Representatives that cannot afford one. To us, it’s not a luxury but a necessity to do our work better.”

Also, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Works, Senator Kabiru Gaya, said it was important for the National Assembly management to buy the project vehicles for lawmakers who would need them to carry out oversight functions.

He said, “ I don’t know what people mean by exotic cars because I have personal vehicles that are better than what the National Assembly is proposing to buy for us.

“You will find out that a minister uses four cars. They fuel those four cars for any of his trips. Senators get vehicles once in four years and any vehicle used on Nigerian roads for four years cannot be handed over to another senator to use. It is not possible.

“We are asking for only one car for our official use, to do our oversight, to go round the country. I don’t see anything wrong with that.”

Also, the Senate Leader, Senator Ali Ndume, said Buhari was not opposed to the National Assembly purchasing cars to carry out official assignments.

He said, “There is no way the executive will expect us to use our personal vehicles to do official work in the legislature.

“The problem is that the media is blowing the issue out of proportion. The amount being quoted was a far cry from what would be needed to purchase the vehicles.”

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Gas Resources, Senator Bassey Akpan, also said the purchase of project vehicles was crucial to the success of the parliament, if the nation was really interested in quality legislative activities.

He stated that a lawmaker needed more than a vehicle to effectively carry out his or her oversight functions across the country.

For the House of Representatives, findings showed that aside the 360 units (one to each member), additional customised vehicles would be added to the fleet of the Speaker, Mr. Yakubu Dogara; the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Yusuf Lasun; the Majority Leader, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila ; the Chief Whip, Mr. Alhassan Ado-Doguwa; the Minority Leader, Mr. Leo Ogor, and other principal officers in both the majority and minority caucuses of the House.

A senior official of the House told one of our correspondents that it also depended on the passage of the 2016 budget by the National Assembly.

The source said, “We are waiting for the budget to be passed. All the votes for the year are captured in the budget. As soon as the budget is passed and funds are released, the issue of cars should become a thing of the past.

“We are over-flogging this car issue as if it is the most important challenge facing our nation today.”

The Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Abdulrazak Namdas, was emphatic that the House would buy cars for its members as it had been the tradition over the years.

He confirmed that lack of funds had put the car project on hold for a while.

Namdas said, “There are no releases yet; we are waiting for money.

“What is a fact is that the House will certainly buy operational vehicles for members to use while going on oversight visits.

The People’s Republic of China has said it will invest $60bn in Nigeria.

Chargé d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, Mr. Qin Jian, who said this in a statement commemorating the 45th anniversary of its diplomatic activities in Nigeria, described economic cooperation between both countries as fruitful.

Qin said China was willing to integrate its development with independent and sustainable development of Nigeria and other African countries, so as achieve common development.

He noted that at the “successful and historic” second edition of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation Summit held in Johannesburg, South Africa, Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed five major pillars for China-Africa relations.

According to the Chinese envoy, China and Africa should seek equality and mutual trust in politics, cooperation in economy, mutual learning in civilisation, mutual assistance in security and unity and coordination in international affairs.

Qin said, “(China’s) 10 key cooperation plans with Africa in the fields of industrialisation, agriculture modernisation, infrastructure, etc. will serve as an all-around blueprint for China’s cooperation with Africa in a period to come and symbolise that China-Africa relations will take a big stride and enter a new era.

“To fulfil the 10 plans, China has pledged 60 billion US dollars in development funding to Africa. When carrying out cooperation with Africa, China sticks to the principle of ‘Four noes and three priorities.’

“These include attaching no political conditions, interfering in no African country’s internal affairs, raising no demanding requirements and making no empty promises.”

Among the listed priorities of the Asian nation were Africa’s demands, improvement of African people’s livelihood and enhancement of Africa’s capacity for independent development.

The Chairman of the Osun State Association of Medical and Dental Officers, Dr. Isiaka Adekunle, has said the body will convince its members to suspend the ongoing strike, which is almost five months old.

According to a statement made available to our correspondent in Osogbo on Saturday by the Chairman, House Committee on Information, Mr. Olatubosun Oyintiloye, Adekunle raised the hope of resumption during the meeting of the lawmakers with the leadership of the striking doctors.

The Speaker, Mr. Najeem Salaam, appealed to the doctors to suspend the industrial action, saying the masses were at the receiving end of the crisis.

Salaam said, “You are major stakeholders in the health sector, and whenever you decide to lay down your tools, the masses suffer, people die.

“We are appealing that you go back to your duty posts, while we continue our dialogue to ensure that your demands are met.

The economic realities in the country, particularly in a state like ours, requires that we all make sacrifices and in making sacrifices, the Osun Assembly will stand by you to see that justice is done.”

The Speaker then assured the striking doctors that after calling off the strike, the assembly would ensure that none of them was victimised due to the industrial action.

The OSAMDO chairman promised the parliament that their appeal would be taken to the congress to convince the doctors to suspend the action.

Adekunle said, “Members of the union were also ready to make sacrifices as done by other labour unions in the state but they only rejected the agreement between the government and the Nigeria Labour Congress because they (doctors) were not carried along during the negotiations.

“We will take your appeal to the congress and we believe that we will be able to convince our members to suspend the strike. The people of Osun should be expecting good news anytime from now due to the assurance we have received from the state assembly.”

The Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki, on Saturday, ruled out the possibility of reversing the policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria, which excludes some imported goods and services from the list of items that can benefit from the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market.

Saraki, according to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Sanni Onogu, stated this while hosting the Tomato Sub-Sectoral Group of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, whose members visited him.

The tomato paste producers had sought Saraki’s intervention to lift the exemption by the CBN on certain imported goods.
But Saraki said based on the present economic realities, difficult decisions should be taken to overcome the challenges.
The Senate President said, “It is high time we started telling ourselves the home truth as a nation. We are where we are because of our refusal to take hard decisions.

“As a country, we have to chart a new way different from the past, and that path is going into manufacturing as we cannot continue to remain an import dependent country.”

He challenged the tomato paste producers to focus more on how to be full-fledged manufacturers of the product using local raw materials.

Saraki also expressed surprise that in spite of the high level of local cultivation of tomatoes, the producers were still importing the Triple Concentrate used in the production of the product, which, he said, could be produced locally by raising the production level of tomatoes in the country.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday said that with the quantum of problems his administration inherited, he sometimes wondered why he had to seek power at this time.
Buhari spoke in London while addressing members of the Nigerian community in the United Kingdom.

Buhari said he wondered why oil, which used to sell for over $140 per barrel, would reduce to $30 per barrel during his time as the President.

Notwithstanding the problem, however, Buhari said he kept praying to God to be merciful to the over 170 million Nigerians who are exposed to poverty, illiteracy and other social ills.
He said, “With the problems we have in this government, I sometimes wonder. At least, this time around, I asked for it, I prayed for it, I went round the country and I asked for it. But the first time under the military, I allowed the military to take decision.

“But I say why me? Why is it that it is when they have spent all the money, when they made the country insecure that I returned?

“Why didn’t I come when the treasury was full? Oil price was over $140 per barrel and when I came, it slipped down to $30. Why me?

“I keep on praying to God to pity Nigeria and its over 170 million people who are exposed to climate change, illiteracy and poverty.”

The President, however, said his administration had succeeded in mopping up over N2.2trn as of January through the Treasury Single Account arrangement.

He said although the TSA was introduced by the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, that administration could not implement it for reasons best known to its officials.

He said his administration decided to implement the arrangement when he came on board and discovered that the country was broke.

The President said, “You know the condition we are in now. I am sure with demands from home, in spite of what your effort is, you know we are really in trouble.

“We have tried to impose what we call Treasury Single Account. The reason is simple. This government did not initiate it, it was initiated by the previous government. But it was so unpopular to the bureaucracy, so the previous government for its own reasons, could not impose it.

“But when we came and we found out that we were broke, we said this is the way to do it.

“I will tell you two examples to convince you. Firstly, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation had more than 45 accounts. Ministry of Defence had more than 70 accounts. Tell me which Accountant-General can trace all these accounts?

“So, we imposed TSA. By the end of December, coming to January 2016, we mopped up more than N2.2trn which would have been used through bureaucratic system to raise vouchers and sign cheques so that they don’t go into the next budget.”

The President said Nigeria owed the United States and Britain a lot of appreciation for stopping the former administration from rigging the last presidential election.

He recalled that ahead of the elections, the former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), urged the service chiefs and the then Inspector-General of Police to tell officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission that they could not guarantee their safety during the polls.
He said the then Chairman of INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega, however, gave a comprehensive report at a meeting of the National Council of State, where he said he would be able to deliver, at least, 60 per cent free and fair election.

The President said as of that time, the country had never gone beyond 45 per cent.

He said it took the intervention of US Secretary of State, John Kerry, for the last administration to conduct credible election.
He said, “Then we insisted that election must be done according to the constitution.

“At this point again, I must hasten to thank the United States for sending the Secretary of State, Kerry, to go and read the riot act to the previous government and speak to Prof. Jega, the Chairman of INEC and speak to us as opposition that the US would not tolerate any election outside the Nigerian constitution.

“They maintained the pressure from that date until after the election and the formation of the new government.
“I think Nigerians honestly should thank the US for this. The same thing with Britain, they used all their experience and their powers to make sure that the Federal Government did not rig the last election.

“We thank God, we thank these super powers and we thank technology. Why we thank technology is because of the permanent voter cards and the card readers.”

Buhari said the issue of Diaspora voting had been coming up in all the countries he had visited since the inception of his administration.

Amnesty International has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to stop side-stepping justice and start investigating war crimes committed by the Nigerian military against civilians in the fight against Boko Haram.

Until this happens, the international human rights organisation has asked the United Kingdom Prime Minister, David Cameron, to stop offering military assistance to Nigeria.
Currently, the UK Government provides military assistance to Nigeria in the fight against Boko Haram. More than 150 British troops have been deployed in the country to offer military training.

Amnesty International’s UK Director, Kate Allen, made the call after President Buhari’s visit to the UK to attend the Supporting Syria Conference in London on Thursday.
Allen said in a statement, “The UK must ensure that any assistance it provides to Nigeria is compliant with human rights law. It should not provide military assistance to Nigerian troops accused of committing human rights violations. All proposed training or other security assistance must be very carefully scrutinised, and all Nigerian military personnel recommended for training should be vetted to ensure the UK is not complicit in any serious human rights violations.

“The UK, under its obligations under the Arms Trade Treaty, must also ensure that a rigorous risk assessment is carried out before weapons, ammunition, or other military technologies are sent to Nigeria, and no transfers should take place where there is a clear and substantial risk that they could be used to commit or facilitate atrocities. This is no time for a diplomatic tap-dances around the issues of mass unlawful killings, arbitrary arrest and deaths in detention.”

In a June 2015 report titled, “Stars on their shoulders, blood on their hands,” AI detailed alleged war crimes committed by the Nigerian military.

Amnesty also reiterated its call upon the UK Government to ensure any military assistance provided to Nigeria is in keeping with human rights standards, and not provided to units accused of crimes under international law and other serious violations of human rights.

In a related development, AI has entered into partnership with civil rights organisation, Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, to protect the rights of Nigerians against torture.

The rights group said it recognised CDHR’s efforts in the protection of human rights, adding that their collaboration would strengthen AI’s global ‘Stop Torture’ crusade.
AI’s Project Manager in Nigeria, Mr. Makmid Kamara, during a press conference recently at the CDHR headquarters in Lagos, said, “Human rights issues in Nigeria are very complex. For instance, the Nigerian Constitution prohibits torture but does not criminalise it. We urge the CDHR and other civil society groups to speak out against this. Torture should be criminalised in Nigeria.”

Kamara said the AI would be assisting the CDHR in the “area of research and investigation of alleged rights abuses.”
CDHR’s National President, Mr. Malachy Ugwumadu, said the organisation was delighted with the partnership, adding that it was in the “process of providing a thoroughly researched database on looting in Nigeria.”

He said the database, which would be made public, would include details on what the looted funds could have been used for.

He said, “The meeting coincides with the country’s challenge in the area of upholding the rights of Nigerians not to be tortured. The inefficiency of Nigerian law enforcement agencies in conducting investigations often leads to the use of torture against suspects.”

Abuja - Clinical Biologist, Bamidele Mutiu from the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital has warned Nigerians to stay away from consuming soaked garri in order to prevent the spread of Lassa fever, Naij reported.

The health expert has discouraged the consumption of soaked garri because of the huge spread of the fever. Also Mutiu expressed that people are likely to be infected with Lassa because of house rats that are in contact with garri while it is still soaked.

Further, Mutiu states that once garri is processed it does not go through any heating process which is dangerous.
Mutiu advised that when people are about to eat eba they should put it on fire as the heat kills any pathogens that are present.

A herd of goats has helped to improve the health of children at Vhutshilo Mountain School in Tshikombani village in Vhembe in Limpopo, South Africa.
The goats were introduced by the school after staff from a local organisation, the Centre for Positive Care (CPC), saw that children at the school, many of whom are HIV positive, were not getting enough nutrition at home. In addition, local HIV positive mothers were not breastfeeding their babies because they were afraid of infecting their babies.
“The goats’ project is about food security and nutrition. Women living with HIV were struggling with breastfeeding their children because they were afraid of infecting them since the virus can be passed on in the milk,” says Khathu Nemafhohoni, the school’s outreach co-ordinator.
“We learnt that goat’s milk was more nutritious than formula, which is not always available at the clinics and is expensive to buy. So we did some research and spoke to farmers to find out more about goat’s milk.
“We then got a goat so that the milk it produced could be used to feed the children as well as to sell for an income. Good nutrition is especially important for children especially those living with HIV. Goat’s milk is far superior in this regard to cow’s milk.”
CPC co-founder Susie Cooke says that caregivers of HIV positive children were given a mother goat with the understanding that its first kid had to be given to another caregiver. A small herd of goats stays at the school, and the school children love the milk on their morning porridge.
But the project has been more difficult than the team anticipated. The team had to learn a lot about breeding and taking care of goats, which was completely new territory.
“The initial goats were bought from another area and it was difficult for them to acclimatise,” said Cooke. “They ate the bark off trees and subsequently died, and often got into the vegetable garden.”
A good Samaritan donated money for fencing and to help with the running of the project, which helped a lot.
Another insight the Vhutshilo team learnt was that a Swiss Alpine ram for breeding would lead to the production of good quality milk.
“Initially we were worried about inter-breeding but we learned that you can use a ram for breeding for at least four years before you need to bring another one in,” said Cooke.
Besides the goat project, every year Vhutshilo holds workshops on how to make food gardens for caregivers and their children. To date, the children work on 30 home gardens with the assistance of their caregivers when necessary. Seedlings from the school nursery generate an income for the school and the gardens also help to put food on the table.
Food security threatens numerous households in the area but Vhutshilo found a solution in their own backyard. The goat’s milk project, together with community gardens have started to shift the food security balance and made for healthier eating, which is especially important for people living with HIV.

A 35-year-old woman committed suicide at her Eldoret home in Kenya's Rift Valley after failing to take the lives of her two young sons.
Doreen Gathure took her life after attempting to kill her sons using a knife.
According to Citizen TV, Gathure's children were at the Moi teaching and Referral Hospital in Nairobi.
After she failed to get hold of her husband by phone, she went to the hospital to pick up her youngest son and took him home. It was not clear what happened next.
"In the morning (Thursday), one of our neighbours came and told me that Doreen had committed suicide. We quickly rushed there to confirm and it was true," said a neighbour, Sara Cherotich.
According to a K24report, Gathure looked in deep thought a few days before her death. She was described as generally "a jolly woman who was happy to get on with life despite its struggles".
Her mother-in-law, Esther Gathure, expressed shock at how her daughter-in-law had died, saying she expected her to communicate if she had any problems.
Suicides have increased in Kenya in recent years. The east African country was rated the 29th in the word, according to statistics.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has vowed to shut down Imo State once the 14-day ultimatum issued to the state government to recall the 3 000 sacked workers expires.
President of Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, Igwe Achese, a member of the 6-man action committee set up by NLC to look into the crisis made the disclosure.
He said the planned action will cripple both economic and social activities in the state as fuel and electricity supplies, banks and shops will be closed among others.
The union alleged that the state governor has raised a private militia which he armed to inflict injuries on workers.
Congress said it considers this as illegal and resolves to make a report to the Inspector General of Police, warning that in the event that Okorocha violates the law by unleashing the militia again on workers, there would be consequences.
The state government is alleged to be owing workers of the state’ agencies including Imo State Water Corporation and Imo State Transport Company, between three and 15 months salaries and other benefits.

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), John Odigie-Oyegun has expressed shock over the Supreme Court judgement in the governorship election in Rivers State, reports Vanguard.
He said there was something fundamentally wrong with the judiciary that needs to be investigated.
Oyegun spoke on Wednesday in Abuja during a meeting with a delegation of the party from Rivers state.
The said the Supreme Court judges must be investigated over the ruling on the governorship election in Rivers.
It will be recalled that the apex court last week Friday affirmed the election of the state governor, Nyesom Wike, and dismissed the prayers of the APC governorship candidate, Dakuku Peterside who prayed for cancellation of judgment of the state election petition tribunal.

Ofcourse. it is indeed a retrograde motion for electoral process. Very soon they will blame PMB whereas the whole judgement was in favour of the same people that will later blame PMB.

instead of the apex court to institute the use and importance of the reader cards, they did the right thing without considering the fact that many were denied the right to be accredited manually and as such didn't vote.
