scholes0:To me the isokos and urhobos are less like Bini, etsako, ishan and more like itsekiri, ijaw and kwale |
OK, let try and settle this, the truth is OP you are very correct, Aboh along with kwale, agbor, ikwerre are not Igbos. The problem is the ethnic grouping in Nigeria is complex and most of our Igbos brodas don't even want to try and learn more. Well I'll try my best to explain it. Now Ekiti, offa and ijebu can't say they not Yoruba cuz they are, just dat they have diff dialects, but where you will be wrong is saying that egun or Itsekiri are yorubas cuz even though their language may sound like a Yoruba dialect, itsekiri people trace origins to ginua in Benin, their custom, dressing, food, dance and way of life is more like urhobos and ijaws, they may just speak Yoruba cuz of closeness to ilaje. Similarly, Mbaise is Igbo, Ngwo is Igbo, even Asaba are Igbos that spill over to Delta. But Aboh, Ika and Ikwerre not only do they speak a language most Igbos can't understand (though may sound Igbo) also some of their dress, customs, food, dance, way of life is more like Ijaws, Urhobos and Binis. There is no strong proof that traces them to Igbo, as the ikas even have a stronger link with Bini and their language has as many Bini words as Igbo words, but Bini have not claim Ika. I know some people will bring out unnecessary points to counter this, anyway Igbos can take Aniocha leave the other"delta ibos"(ukwuani and Ika) and ikwerre(of rivers state) to be independent |
edupedia:must everything turn to fight in NL, we are all learning, and no one has helped answer my question |
Sinistami:Me sef, I'm a port harcourt boy See more of the south south from this site https://www.nairaland.com/4236912/south-south-developed-lagos-abuja |
Its not my fault, in skul we were taught that all north is under Hausa, and all southeast and southsouth is under Igbo. But when you see the similarities, u can't blame us for confusing the SE and SS, after all I've not visited either, but why are they so alike |
I grew up thinking 3 major tribes in Nigeria were the only tribes, then i would see a bini girl or a calabar boy and call them 'omo ibo' and since I didn't understand their language it all sounded ibo to me, until recently I learnt of the other tribes in the east, the ishan, ijaw, urhobo, ogoni, Ibibio,e.t.c like 20 of them, i even met one Amadi dat told me he is not Igbo, he is ikwere, n one guy, Okoro, told me he is urhobo nt igbo And am like where are these people in this country, then i was made to know dat the likes of Osasu(Bini), Tari(Ijaw), Kevwe(Isoko) n Ekaite(Efik) are not Igbos as I thought. But I've noticed that these people ve many likeness with Igbos, from the customs i hear them talk about, their dress, their dance, the way of cooking, many words in their language, the way they do things generally is more like Igbo, than Yoruba or Hausa. What is the reason for this closeness? |

sazycul:As in, even my aunt living in Warri, had to search tirelessly before saw a flat for 40,000 a month |
Pepo who think Lagos is expensive should visit Abuja, Port Harcourt, Warri, Calabar. Pepo who think Lagos is rough, rugged, not peaceful, and hard to survive in, should visit Benin, Warri, Port Harcourt Pepo who think Lagos is too busy n noiseful should visit Onitsha, Aba Pepo who think Lagos pepo are the sharpest, should visit any south south city Pepo who think Lagos is fine n very fun, should visit Calabar, Uyo |
Do not mind Lagos people thinking they are the smartest n toughest, call it 'Lagos sense' many of them have not gone far from lagos, visit Port Harcourt, Warri or Benin and you o no say Lagos den b novice, me SS boy go dey fear common area boys for lagos? If not for stupid govt policies, Ph can easily beat Lagos as the commercial center, we make more money than lagos and are as developed, yet lagos people feel dey feed us in SS. Lagos Is Very Overhyped! |
Niger delta is no doubt a highly blessed land, yes there have some faults, as a Niger deltan from delta state n who has travelled to other parts of this country I want to give my insight into this land for does who dont know The real Niger deltans are those from Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers states, though political it is now confused to mean 9 oil producing states or 6 south south states. The ethnic groups of ND are the Igbo, Ukwuani, Ika, Ikwerre, Isoko, Ijaw, Urhobo, Itsekiri, Ogoni n odas, fellow south south tribes are Bini, ishans, afemai, efik, Ibibio, annang ogoja, e.t.c. These people have the richest culture and I will prove it. First, Evri tribe has good food but tell me which you've enjoyed more than onunu and fish soup, starch n oghwo/banga, kekefiyai, ukhodo, ofe akwu, ofe nsala, polofiyai, native soup, all garnished with sea foods, not to talk of popular snacks of bole with fish/okazi, okpa, banga rice, jampie, e.t.c. also afang, ekpakukwo, black soup. Secondly, in terms of music n dance, can u lie that in church you dont dance uncontrollably when you hear an urhobo or ijaw song, the sweet dance of the people. In dressing, the itsekiris, efiks, binis, ve the most stylish designs, not to mention the ND has d most gorgeous ladies(although the ugly ones are extremely ugly)its 45% very fine, 10% average, 45% very ugly, u are free to contest dis fact The culture of the people is also very interesting for those who really know the culture of the people. Of course, growing up in cities like Port Harcourt, Warri and Benin will make you a smart, tough and charming person. For those who think Lagos is the rugged centre of Nigeria, visit any these cities and see if Lagos sense will help you, I sorry for you. And yes these places are cities, highly commercial, developed, industrialized, beautiful, n fun, not villages like most outsiders think. Celebs from Ph include Timaya, Mr Eazi, Burna boy, Duncan might, mama gee, tonto dikeh, Julius agwu, agbani darego, e.t c while Wafi made 80% of the comedy industry, Omawumi, Orezi, Harrysong, sterioman, Justus esiri, RMD, Ufuoma McDermott, Ebube, Efe,e.t.c just a few from an endless list of talented south southerners Now for the bitter truths, the ND is first, the most immoral part of d country, the most unsafe(filled with kidnappers, cultists, robbers, prostitutes, yahoo boys n girls, militants) some of the worse leaders(In my opin anyway). Truly the govt policies are designed to marginalize the SS, ports of wafi, Ph n cali r rearly used so dat business is conc in lagos only. The oil money revenue is taken to lag n abj n no fg project is going on in the ND, nt to mention good no of oil companies work in SS degrading d environs but pay tax to office in Lagos. Its d SS n SE dat make Lagos what it is. But then even the small percent of the money we get if properly managed is far more than enough if nt for yeye leaders, n selfish youths. What we need is to stop fighting ikwerre vs ijaw, urhobo vs itsekiri, n start using our Godly minds to do things, no corruption, tribalism, embezzlement, violence. I hope someone who cares will help spread this. Long live Niger Delta Igbo kwenu! Ikwerre meka o! Haa Izon! Urhobo ado! Oma tsekiri dede! Iyo Ogoni! Edo a tokpe ye! Ibibio Songh! |
nobody- I can see some goats are not willing to learn, so I leave them to their wrong beliefs. to chris- how are you sure Igbos didn't copy some of does words from urhobo urhobos are minority in terms of number, in order areas we and the rest of the south south are fully in charge south south though minorities is a land of too muchness |
I argee with you cuz I went to port harcourt a bit rough but nt near what the media portrays, however I heard Rivers people talking of the rough life in Delta and Edo when they went there. It makes sense, at first they portrayed Warri as unsafe to drive investors from Delta, now they are doing same in Port harcourt so that Lagos will stay on top, oil companies gradually leaving rivers n delta to lagos n abuja |
we hear on news of everyday of the terror of cultism in port harcourt and other parts of Rivers state, but I know people who schooled in Edo state and they say that the media just wants to implicate Ruvers and that cultism is nt as rampant in Rivers as in Edo, I also know people who ve visited Delta and they say cultism there is worse than what they're seeing in Rivers just dat the media doesnt carry their news, then I hear of badoo cult in Lagos, I lyk to know from someone dat knows dese places, Is Rivers dat bad? or is the media overhyping things to paint the govt black? |
fero007:Ehen northerners nor vex o, but someone told me hausas are also powerful jaz men, I said let me ask nor crucify me, I've only visited abuja I don't know north lyk dat |
what better research do I need than to live among the people? I know Delta from issele-uku to burutu, Rivers from elele to bonny, I've meant lots of ikwerre n ukwuani people who correct me over n over dat theynt Igbo, wen they speak with Igbos they don't really flow n only pick out some few words if they listen well, same vice versa. Saying they are Igbos is like saying itsekiris are Yoruba or ibibios are efiks, even urhobo n isoko that are very the same still(and isoko have agreed they came from urhobo) are distinguished as different tribes, if isoko can be different from urhobo why can't ikwerre n ukwuani be different from igbo or Ikpumadu do you claim you know better than hundreds of ikwerres who tell me their nt igbo |
IkpuMmadu:Tell me which part is the lie, and be sure it was urhobo or ijaw you observed in Warri not Itsekiris, cuz I know warri well too o |
IkpuMmadu:Now let me relecture you, going for omugwo(though we don't call it dat), carrying wine and celebrating kolanut is also done in Urhobo and Ijaw lands as well as ukwuanis, will you now tell me that ijaw n urhobo are nw Igbos cause we wear the same jorge n single wrappers or ve same words like biko, okoro, obara, ugo e.t.c will you?, urhobo and ijaws also don't ve an overall king so those are not points Hope you nw see how ikas n ikwerres n ukwuanis are nt igbos, if u like go and look 4 more lies, mumu |
I grow annoyed when I hear people chastise IPOB for wanting to leave Nigeria, when a marriage is not working a partner should be allowed to leave, though my advice to igbos is I think we should try and fix the marriage first( restructuring) before deciding to leave or not. And to those chastising Niger delta for not join ipob, the true reason Niger deltans don't want to join Igbos is mistrust, history has taught us to trust no one whether Igbo, yoruba not even within ourselves. Its not that we don't like IPOB ideas in fact we have suffered this country more than Igbos . From first Biafra war, the Midwest was the battleground, Biafra took over Midwest(which had been kind to Biafra as Igbos were still welcome in Midwest after leaving Lagos n the north) and soldiers molested people causing conflict, then Nigerian soldiers retook midwest and did even worse molestation as they claim we were silently supporting Biafra Igbo complain of marginalisation but how many efiks, oginis, urhobos ve held good posts in dis country even in their own state, ijaws ve produced 1 president, urhobos 1 governor, Ogonis don't even ve a commissioner. Igbo businesses along with Niger delta oil is what developed Lagos and Abuja Igbos are seen and ignored by FG, Niger deltans are not even seen at all ND land is oil polluted at least SE's livable When they attack Igbos in the north they attack us too cuz to them all ND are Igbo FG never killed a saro wiwa in Igbo land, Neva destroyed an odi village, Neva instigated a warri crisis, Neva performed an operation crocodile smile When we can forget about whose Hausa pepo, yoruba, edo pepo, Igbo, Itsekiris and learn to be just Nigerian pepo, we will be capital of the world When we stop allowing ourselves to be bribed and used by useless leaders to inflate Nigerians problem When we forget about 'who you help' and start putting ourselves in odas shoes, and help dem out If possible let the next generation not be raised far from us so we don't Robb dem with corruption, and let forget about their tribe and carry nigerian culture, forget religious issues and be ONE. OK it's only talk I can talk o, I've tried |
IkpuMmadu:VERY WRONG! 1.)Itsekiris are not yoruboid o, they only speak a yoruboid like language, they trace their history to Bini from prince Ginuwa, and ve been influenced by ijaw n urhobo, even their dressing, food, lifestyle is far from yoruba or is it only language that indicates a tribe 2.)Ikwerres speak an igboid language, but their dressing, food n dance is similar to the ijaws, even the name rumuighorhoya suggests Bini origin, (ighorhoya is an edo word and I'm 100% sure of that), the story of ikwerres may be same story of bonny 3.)Hope you know the term delta Igbo refers to 3 different groups, ikas, ukwuanis/ndokwas n aniochas/enuanis, I'm aware of the different dialects of Igbo (ngwo, mbaise, mbano, ndoki,e.t.c) and I agree that enuani is one of them. As for ukwuanis, beside language tell me anoda similarity they ve with Igbo, they were among the tribes that would ve been old delta state with capital at warri, while enuani were campaigning for anioma state. as for ikas, yes they answer emeka, kosarachi, onuoha, ifeanyi okowa but they also answer names like ozegbe, abah, these are edo names, they called God Chukwu(Igbo) n also call him Osakwe(Edo), the way you partially understand an ika man is same way an esan man partly understands them. So Language Cannot be used as the only avenue to indicate a tribe(Taraba people speak Hausa language but are Jukun people) As you see I'm nt just writing from what dem said somewhere, I'm very much on ground in Delta and Rivers states and know quite well what goes on there |
IkpuMmadu:nt jus urhobo n isoko o, ijaws, itsekiri, ndokwa all tribes in delta are brothers to each other n ve strong relationship with edo, bayelsa, rivers n oda south south states well since none of us were there when the tribes were being formed I guess we can't argue with complete certainty, so wen next I see dis argument of whether ndokwa n ikwerre are igbo, I'll b on the fence cuz I ve heard different things from different sources |
urhobo n isoko do same meeting in Lagos probably as a sense of brotherliness(one Delta) u can't see dat in Warri, rememba I'm from delta o amaechi SAID! he is more Igbo, he is just one man, meanwhile historians ve discovered dat ikwere n Igbo ve different roots, maybe closeness is what influenced ikwere to luk lyk Igbo, jus as ijaws in bonny n opobo nw speak an Igbo like language, urhobos in aragba n orogun, can speak Igbo, urhobos in bayelsa can speak ijaw, ijaws in kiagbodo can speak urhobo, ijaws in ondo speak a Yoruba like language, urhobos in ikpoba speak Edo and hundred other examples |
Urhobo n Isoko ve same language, custom, dressing, food, dance, evritin with minor variations, but nobody in delta says isoko pepo r urhobo cuz they don't want to be urhobo. So if ukwuanis n ikwerres don't want to be Igbo leave them, they is right to tribe |
IkpuMmadu:jikan I don't know of your list but different observations are allowed ikpumadu, do you know dat portuguese answer Diego but doesn't make dem Spanish, tribes may speak same language but ve different customs, dressings, foods, e.t.c(like yoruba n itsekiri)I don't want 2 fight u, me I'm also a delta boy from ughelli who lives in port harcourt, u say ure from delta north I'm guessing asaba or anoda aniocha/enuani town cuz dat is only where we ve pure Igbos in delta, but if u see a man from kwale, who grew up in delta ask him if his Igbo n see his response(kwale is a neighbour to my village), ask an ikwerre man in ph, 88% will tell u there nt Igbo. Same language doesn't mean same tribe( example Urhobo n Isoko). Ukwuanis n ikwerres may be Igbo(MAYBE I don't know) but mixture of oda tribes like Edo has changed them, so Igbos can't claim dem, jus as Urhobos are from Edo, but mixture with Ukwuani n Ijaw has changed them n Edo can no longer claim them, |
una no hear say na joke wen I start? whatever ukwuani, ikas and ikwerres are not Igbos o, but don't take it from me ask the ika or ikwerre man then you will see ur the one who critically needs sense |

The only thing bringung Igbos together with Ijaws, Efiks, Ibibios, Urhobos and Ogonis is that they all have a common enemy( the hausas and the yorubas) in Biafra they will be no common enemy to hold them together |
When IPOB protested marginalization, undevelopment, and asked for resource control and restructuring, without killing or destroying anything, they were called terrorists and Operation Python Dance started in Aba, Owerri n oda anigbos. When Niger deltans protested underdevelopment, marginalization, resource control and environmental destruction, they also called terrorists, even though they protested for years and only started blocking pipelines to get govts attention but they killed no one until govt started Operation Crocodile Smile in Warri, Port Harcourt n oda Niger delta where they were forced to fight back the military Now Fulani herdsmen(i know its not all of them but most) are mindlessly killing people and burning villages around the nation for no reasonable reason, yet govt is not even saying anything about them, I believe in 2019 we all know what to do |
You cannot be a lazy or dull man and survive anywere in Nigeria but some places are known to be very rugged, sharpness n toughness is required, there are:- 5.)Onitsha Anambra's commercial capital, is the biggest market in africa(even bigger than Lagos if u remove corporate firms). there r hungry boys who can steal from you smoothly, cheat u in market, and angry pepo ready to beat you for a little mistake of just blocking their way. if u want to stay here, b agile n don't b dumb 4.)Lagos Lagos is not an easy place to stay, its overcrowded, busy, rough, u ve to jump into a moving bus, wake up before 4am n still spend 3 hrs in traffic, beware of 419 traders n criminals, thugs n armed robbers are anoda problem, pepo ve smart ways of cheating others, to even live here u must b a smart hustler. I no many thought Lagos will b no 1, but bliv me, there r places worse than Lagos, apart from few cult groups, der really no big security challenge in Lagos. 3.)Port Harcourt Not as crowded as Lagos, no much traffic and u don't ve 2 wake up by 4am, but ph pepo can b more aggressive than lagos pepo, u f**k up they f**k u up, Ph is not a place where mouth can help u without being ready to fight. u ve 2 b smart 2 avoid being cheated or unknowingly robbed, there r experts. as if dat wasn't enough armed robbers, kidnappers n cultists are all over, they've killed ph nite life n even commit day time offenses killing pepo n policemen daily. now mobile police hiluxs, SARS, SACS, roam every major street 24/7, with the military at various points, even the coast n rivers r full of navy men to keep dem safe, cuz militants n pirates nw eye des places. 2.)Benin-city My own b-syd is d reason I can go anywhere else without fear, there's nothing our see there dat ve nt seen worse in Benin. In benin everybody must ve an inner agbero to survive. if u quarrel wit anyone u ve set u head 4 breaking, u c small children fighting n ready 2 break bottles on their heads, I was in a bus once, our driver was quarrelling wit anoda driver n d man spread wat was lyk tear gas in our bus n our driver almost lost control, in benin sharp boyz wil steal clothes from ur back n u won't know, der r professors of criminology n duping, cars r stolen evriday, houses sold, armed robbers n cultists are now outnumbering churches, yahoo boys(n girls)n kidnappers present, n security agents r almost powerless, SARS, Mopo r nw at evri 5 minute walk 2 search u n maybe clean(extort) u, the local vigilante is still der ready to catch n immediately der burn any kidnapper or cultist dey catch. knife n cutlass nor dey fear benin pepo, if u show dem gun dem go show u double barrel 1.)Warri I thought benin was the worst, warri is the hideout of the smoothest criminals ever, u c pepo switching keys n locks to access neighbours rooms, small boys in crowded place foloing u wit razor blade 2 cut ur bag n take ur goods, soft n quick hands in n out of pocket, slap n collect, n oda genius criminal ways of cheating okada was stopped in warri because der were known for cutting chains on pepos neck n zigzagging away in the streets, in warri u suspect evribodi evrityme. if u r going 2 quarrel, ready to folo up wit fight, wafi don't lyk 2 tuk 2 much, children pick up iron rods 2 beat themselves, some throw demselves from storey buildings. armed robbers, yahoo boyz ,kidnappers n cultists nw make up almost half d population, secondary schools always fight holding guns, cutlass, daggers, axes, barb wires, acid, shooting, beheading n burning demselves n soldiers ve 2 stop d fight as spreads 2 town(police, SACS no dey near der), yahoo boys can b found in JS 3, n cultists in primary skuls(boys n girls). militancy ve nw added 2 d group n even d military can't handly dem. in warri nw, soldiers, SARS, SACS nw roam 24/7 in groups even entering residential streets, n nimasa n d navy roam the rivers n d coast, as kidnappers nw use d rivers as der nw rout. if ur wan rob real warri persin, e go still beat u wer hold dagger or gun, n na u e go rob. |
which naija tribe has best kitchen skills, and which particular foods rule the kitchen, try n taste all their soups before you judge |
hop u no these r only south south tribes not whole Niger delta states, which south state has indigenous Yorubas, we are all learning |
