Nairaland GeneralHomosexuals Protest In Anambra State by ffo(op): 5:32pm On Jun 12, 2013
Litigants and witnesses at the Atani Chief Magistrate Court in Ogbaru local government area of Anambra State Wednesday witnessed a mild drama in the court premises as some people who claimed to be homosexuals nearly disrupted court proceedings in solidarity with two suspected homosexuals standing trial for allegedly committing same sex offence.

As early as 9 .00am, a large number of men with feminist outlook started gathering at the court premises to the surprise of the people around and it was only then that information filtered into the area that they came to identify with two of their members who were arrested by the police and charged to court for same sex violation related offense.

PoliticsOver 60 Alleged Boko-Haram Killed In Maiduguri by ffo(op): 3:03pm On Jun 11, 2013
DailyPost had learnt on Tuesday, in Maiduguri, the capital city of Borno state that, over 60 corpses of alleged Boko Haram terrorists killed during the weekend were deposited on Monday at the State Specialists’ Hospital. The feat was achieved through the help of some youth group, popularly called Civilian JTF, who volunteered to hunt for Boko Haram Terrorists in the state capital.

It was also gathered that the terrorists were arrested and handed over to the military by the youth who have allegedly been engaged by Borno state government and had been trained by the foremost hunter, Ali Quara, who specializes in hunting armed robbers and notorious criminals.

DailyPost gathered that the youth have declared manhunt on Boko Haram Sect and other criminals to clean the state criminals and terrorists after several months of blood-letting by the dreaded Boko Haram sect.

One of the Directors charged with the responsibility of evacuating corpses, who did not want his name in print told newsmen on Tuesday in Maiduguri that, the youth, who are now referred as ‘Civilian JTF’ in Maiduguri have been making tremendous effort at hunting and catching members of the dreaded sect, who seemed to have defies all effort to be arrested by the security officials.

He said, “If you observe now, the security personnel are not oppressing the people as they were doing in the past. Now, it is the ‘Civilian JTF members’ who know these Boko Haram boys that go about identifying and arresting them, before handing them over to the JTF.”

According to him, “with this new arrangement, Borno would soon be cleansed of these bad elements and the peace we are all praying for, is almost at our door steps” adding that “what we need to do is to continue to pray for victory for these youth that have voluntarily put their lives in the lines for the sake of millions of Borno citizens who are being killed by the Boko Haram terrorists”

He said, this is what Borno state should have done long time ago to prevent the killings of many innocent citizens. “But every thing has its own time. We did not know that one day some youth would come up, bundle a Boko Haram member and hand such over to the Military. That was impossible in the past, but now, it is the Boko Haram who are looking for where to hide.”

Also, a former Director in the Ministry of Information, who also prayed anonymity told DailyPost that, he was reliably informed that, those youth hunting for Boko Haram members in Maiduguri were 300 in number and were selected 20 from each of the 15 wards in Maiduguri and supported by the hunter, Ali Quara and some of his boys.

“You know Ali Quara was engaged by the government to train these boys who know those Boko Haram members from each ward of the state capital. They were not just trained, but also using all kinds of ‘juju’(charm) to aide their activities. They also know all those involved in the activities of Boko Haram in their various wards.

PoliticsPDP Suspended Wamakko For Disrespecting Tukur by ffo(op): 6:08pm On Jun 06, 2013
We Suspended Wamakko Because He Did Not Take Tukur's Calls - PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party has said it decided to suspend Governor Aliyu Wamakko because he refused to pick calls made to him by the party's national chairman, Bamanga Tukur.

In a statement released in Abuja today, PDP spokesman Olisa Metuh sought to explain why the governor was suspended.

He stated that Mr. Tukur had called to ask the governor to explain his recent comments, but that the national chairman was unable to get across to Mr. Wamakko.

Mr. Metuh also said the governor refused to respond to a query sent to him, but instead asked Bello Sokoto, the party’s then secretary for the state to reply on his behalf.

Mr. Metuh argued that Mr. Bello Sokoto was too junior in party ranking to have responded to Mr. Tukur.

In addition, Mr. Metuh stated that it was improper for Mr. Bello Sokoto to have used the official letter head of the state government in his reply.

Metuh’s full statement:

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) wishes to set the records straight on the reasons for the suspension of the Executive Governor of Sokoto State, His Excellency, Dr. Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko as a member of the PDP.

The decision to suspend His Excellency, Dr. Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko came after very wide and exhaustive consultations, in accordance with the provisions of the constitution of the PDP and in the overriding interest of the Party.

It is important to note that the reason for the suspension of Governor Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko predates the Nigeria Governors’ Forum’s election.

Sometime in early April, the leadership of the Party was concerned with the statements and conduct of the Governor whereupon the National Chairman placed several calls to draw the attention of the Governor to the matters concerned.

However, it was not possible for the National Chairman to speak with the Governor despite several attempts. The National Chairman thereafter vide a letter dated 12th April, 2013 requested an explanation to the NWC within seven days.

Instead of replying the National Chairman, Governor Wamakko directed the Sokoto State Secretary of the Party, Mallam Aminu Bello Sokoto to reply the National Chairman. The State party Secretary in a letter dated April 14, 2013 and on the official letterhead of the Sokoto State Government House, replied the National Chairman on behalf of the governor.

This amounted to gross disrespect and act of insubordination to a National Officer and a lawful organ of the party which is in violation of Articles 58.1 (c ), (h) and (m) of the PDP constitution which prescribed sanctions for any member who (c ) “disobeys or neglect to carry out lawful directives of the party or any organ or officer of the party”, (h) “engages in any conduct likely to cause disaffection among members of the Party or is likely to disrupt the peaceful, lawful and efficient conduct of the business of the Party” and (m) “fails, refuses or neglects to treat a petition, complaints or appeal timeously” respectively.

Nevertheless, the NWC, vide a letter dated April 17, 2013 kindly requested His Excellency, Dr. Aliyu MagatakardaWamakko to appear before it on the 8th of May, 2013 to clear the issues thereof.

The NWC also wrote to the State Secretary, Sokoto PDP, Mallam Aminu Bello Sokoto requesting explanations for his actions as a state party officer, in replying the National Chairman.

Regrettably, Dr. Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko never honoredthe invitation and refused to respond in any way despite repeated invitations from the NWC, an action which is in clear violation of Article 58.1 (c), of the PDP constitution. In the same vein, the State Secretary, Sokoto PDP also refused to respond to the National Working Committee (NWC).

Consequently, the NWC at its 336th meeting held on May 22, 2013 suspended the State Secretary, Sokoto PDP Mallam Aminu Bello Sokoto and communicated the decision to him in a letter dated May 22, 2013.

The NWC thereafter extended yet another invitation to His Excellency, Dr. Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko in a letter dated May 23, 2013 in which it requested him to appear before it on Wednesday, June 5, 2013 to clarify the issues.

Unfortunately, in complete disregard to a lawful organ of the Party, His Excellency, Dr. Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, instead of appearing before the NWC traveled out of the country on Tuesday June 5, 2013 without any form of response to the party.

The NWC frowned at this act of gross indiscipline and disrespect to the party and was therefore left with no other option than to invoke relevant articles of the PDP constitution in furtherance of the determination to enforce discipline at all levels within the Party.

We wish to state that the leadership of the Party has immense respect for all elected and appointed political office holders and in the same vein expects all political office holders to reciprocate by respecting the constitution and lawful organs of the Party upon which platform they hold office.

The NWC hereby restates that no individual or group within the party is, and must be seen to be above the constitution and lawful organs of the party. All party members are under the rule of the constitution of the party and must so abide.

Signed

Olisa Metuh
National Publicity Secretary

Politics10 Sans, 87 Lawyers Sign Up To Defend Dino Melaye For Free by ffo(op): 3:16pm On Jun 03, 2013
At least, 10 Senior Advocates of Nigeria and 87 lawyers have indicated interest to offer free legal service, otherwise known as pro bono, to the Executive Secretary, Anti-Corruption Network, ACN, Dino Melaye, in a suit instituted against the body by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Bello Adoke,SAN.

A file had been opened for lawyers, who are willing to be part of the defence team.

Already, an 11-man legal team has been constituted by the AGF in the N10.2bn libel suit instituted against Melaye at an Abuja High Court.

ACN had in a petition to President Goodluck Jonathan on April 11, accused Adoke of graft and “outrageous use of powers against public interest.”

But the AGF had insisted that rather than the Presidency, it was he that ordered the investigation without any influence.

A letter from the Office of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, signed by Ali Amodu, a Commissioner of Police in charge of X Squad, to the Executive Secretary of ACN, had informed the group that it was investigating the allegations of corruption, abuse of office and incompetence leveled against the AGF.

Meanwhile, Melaye in a chat with newsmen insists that neither himself nor his group had been served a court notice.

“It shows that those in the legal profession have recognised the abuse of office and flagrant disregard for the rule of law by the AGF. Many of the lawyers complained of the conduct of the AGF and have vowed to furnish this office with additional information and obvious cases of abuse of office by Adoke.

“The bastardisation, monetisation and commercialisation of the legal profession must stop. Conflict of interest must become history. Public interest must be placed above selfish or personal interest in the discharge of official responsibilities in the office of the AGF,” he said.

A Senior Advocate, who spoke with journalists on condition of anonymity said that “The decision (Pro Bono) was premised on the need to reform the legal profession in Nigeria.”

He said the legal practitioners were ready to argue the case whenever hearing begins.

PoliticsPlenty Used Condoms, Narcotic Drugs Found in Boko Haram Camps by ffo(op): 4:37pm On Jun 02, 2013
Indications that Boko Haram insurgents who say they are against Western education and anything to do with the west, have been deceitful, emerged yesterday after troops found packs of condoms, used and unused, in their camps.

Also found were syringes and narcotic drugs believed to have been used by the insurgents to get high before embarking on their deadly attacks.

A statement by the Director, Defence Information, Brig-General Chris Olukolade entitled, ‘Life in Terrorists Camp: Condoms Everywhere’, reads, “More of the dirty sides of the insurgents’ life style are being revealed as troops continue to stumble on strange and bizarre objects such as several used and unused condoms as well as charms and amulets of various shapes seen in the captured terrorists’ camps.
“Other common items are syringes, test tubes and hand gloves usually found in the rubbles of most of the destroyed camps.

“Apart from chemicals and materials for producing Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) narcotics of all types are also found to be common features as troops combed through camps in Sambisa forest, New Marte, and others.

“Meanwhile, Defence Headquarters (DHQ) Assessment teams are in Yobe and Adamawa States to update the reports on the conduct of security operations in those states since deployment of troops in line with the State of Emergency.

The outcome will also be presented for DHQ’s further strategic guidelines for the subsequent phase of the operations.

‘Video clips on civilian casualty is fake’
“The Defence Headquarters has noted the dissemination through the channels of Aljazeera Television reports alleging massive civilian casualties in the ongoing security operations.

“It wishes to point out that the video clip being shown on the Aljazeera reports has no bearing whatsoever on the current reality in the operations areas.

“It is noted in particular that the footages being referred to as civilian casualties were actually pictures of the destruction perpetrated by the terrorists at the police stations and prisons in Bama, Borno State on 7 May 2013 when the insurgents attacked the town”.

Nairaland GeneralBaba Suwe Loses N25 Million Award At The Court Of Appeal by ffo(op): 2:03pm On May 31, 2013
A panel of Court of Appeal judges in Lagos today set aside the N25 million compensatory damages earlier awarded Lagos comedian, Babatunde Omidina " Baba Suwe " over a prolonged detention by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) last year.

In the ruling, the Court of Appeal re-affirmed the right of the NDLEA to investigate, arrest, detain and prosecute drug suspects as long as the agency acts within the law.

The court said the NDLEA had not violated Mr. Omidina's rights because it sought and got court orders from the federal high court to keep him in custody after the arrested him on the suspicion that he had ingested hard drugs.

The Court of Appeal came down heavily on the Lagos High court judge that awarded the damages against the NDLEA, describing the decision as oppressive and burdensome to an agency of government carrying out its statutory duties.

Baba Suwe's attorneys led by civil rights activist, Bamidele Aturu, has vowed to take the matter before the Supreme Court.

Nairaland GeneralRev. Okotie’s Former Keyboardist To Jail Over Facebook Post by ffo(op): 4:32pm On May 30, 2013
An upset magistrate at the Ikeja Magistrate Court, Lagos, on Thursday dispatched a former keyboardist of the Household of God Church, Dafiaghor Okiotor, to prison for contempt of court.

The magistrate, Oshodi Makanjuola, while accusing Mr. Okiotor of flouting her directives to desist from posting the court proceedings on social media; also announced that she is withdrawing from the case.

“I have two publications here,” Mrs. Makanjuola said, brandishing two pieces of paper.

“One is saying: Countdown to Reverend Okotie suit, let us find out if Okotie is too big to come to court.

“The other says: Hallelujah! Okotie Chris gets a dubious judgment…,” the magistrate read from the papers.

“You even had the effrontery to publish my picture on a Sahara Reporters newspaper

Ms. Makanjuola called in the police to take Mr. Okiotor out of the court despite the defendant’s plea that she hears his own side of the story.

“I don’t want to hear anything from you. A matter that is still subjudice before me,” said the furious magistrate.

“I hereby disengage myself from the case. The case file should be sent to the chief magistrate for re-assignment to another magistrate,” she added.

Mr. Okiotor, 40, is facing a three count charge including threatening and preventing Mr. Okotie, the General Overseer of the church, from preaching to his congregation as well as conducting himself in a manner capable of breaching public peace.

At previous sittings, Kola Dopamu, counsel to Mr. Okotie, had consistently sought to draw magistrate’s attention to media publications and Facebook posts on Mr. Okiotor’s wall.

At the last sitting, Mr. Dopamu raised the same “concerns” but the magistrate described it as mere “hearsay.”

“I’m not aware of anything being written by anybody,” Ms. Makanjuola had said.

Also, an earlier effort by Mr. Okiotor’s lawyer, Robert Igbinedion, to get the court to issue witness summons on Mr. Okotie was turned down by the magistrate.

Mr. Igbinedion had tried to convince the court to invite Mr. Okotie to come and present the church’s CCTV recordings on July 10 and 15, 2012, the days the defendant was accused of assaulting the “man of God.”
