ffo: Fourteen soldiers killed by Boko Haram insurgents in the North East region between May and July this year including two Majors have been named by the army headquarters, Abuja.

The soldiers alongside one other killed while serving under the United Nations Mission in Dafur (UNAMID), Sudan will be given state burial today and would be given full military honour.
The soldiers included Majors A.T. Fambiya and Abdullahi Kanoma, Staff sergeant Keku Adebayo, Corporal Ahmed Usman, Corporal Mathew Ade, Lance Corporal Adamu Ibrahim, Lance Corporal Suleiman Gimba, Lance Corporal Salisu Saduaki, Usman David and Lance Corporal Ajani Olusola.
Others are Private Zakariya Dauda, Daniel Kantoma, Nya Bassey, Bassey Emmanuel and Enyenihi Effiong.
A statement signed by Colonel John Agim of the directorate of army Public Relations yesterday said “Nigerian Army will be holding a National Burial for its officers and soldiers that died in active service at the National Military cemetery, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua way.”
The statement said President Goodluck Jonathan and other top government officials will be in attendance.

olokfor: An angry mob has set three suspected armed robbers ablaze in Ikotun, Lagos State.

We learnt on Thursday that the robbers were set on fire on Wednesday evening, shortly after robbing a recharge card trader at Second Junction bus stop on Governor’s Road.
Our correspondent, who visited the area, observed burnt tyres, carcass of a burnt motorcycle and some human flesh on the side of the road.


The recharge card trader, Ese Akporhono, who had a bandage on her head, told our correspondent that the robbers came to her shop posing as customers.
She said a few seconds later, the suspects pointed a gun at her and stole recharge cards worth N400,000 before fleeing.
She said, “Around 5pm, I was closing the shop when the men approached me saying they wanted to buy recharge card.


“Before I knew what was happening, the men brought out guns and went into my shop, They stole recharge cards and money. I engaged them in a struggle and attempted to prevent them from fleeing. They overpowered me and used the butts of their guns to hit me in the face and head.”
Our correspondent learnt that the robbers allegedly snatched a motorcycle and shot a man in the area and were fleeing when a motorist knocked them down.

An eyewitness, who requested anonymity, said a bystander prevented them from fleeing as he pelted them with stones while they were attempting to stand up.

Other residents quickly joined the bystander and grabbed the weak robbers, beating them up to a pulp.
He said, “After the vehicle knocked them down while they were attempting to escape, we seized them and beat them to a pulp. The crowd grew larger and this attracted the attention of policemen.”

Our correspondent learnt that a team of policemen from Ikotun Police Station stormedthe scene and attempted to rescue the robbers but were overwhelmed by the mob.
It was learnt that policemen even fired gunshots into the air but the mob remained adamant.
A woman, who runs a bar in the area, said another team of policemen also arrived from Area M, Idimu, but the mob set the robbers ablaze.

She said, “The policemen came in a patrol vehicle and asked the crowd to hand over the robbers but they refused because they did not trust the police.
“Another team of policemen also came but the crowd ignored them. Some of them (crowd) got tyres, placed them round the robbers’ necks and set them ablaze.
“They however handed over their guns to the police.”

When asked why the residents took laws intotheir own hands, the woman said there had been an increase in robbery in the area and the police had failed them.
She said, “It is because armed robbers have been terrorising us that is why we close our shops early. Last year, a pregnant woman was robbed and killed in this area.

“We cannot continue to fold our arms. By this act, robbers will be afraid anytime they think of coming here.”
Akporhono told our correspondent that her recharge cards were still with the police and they had refused to return them to her.

“Police are holding my recharge cards as exhibit, I want them back because I am the victim,” she said.
When contacted on the telephone, the spokesperson for the state police command, Ngozi Braide, said she was aware of the incident and promised to call back.

• Sultan, others urge peaceful co-existence

A FRESH onslaught by the Joint Task Force (JTF) on Boko Haram has led to the killing of 50 members of the terror group in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The death occurred at the weekend after the JTF clashed with armed terrorists in Zabarmari ward of Maiduguri metropolis, the state capital.

Besides, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III and other Islamic scholars under the aegis of the Jamaát Nasril Islam (JNI) Sunday asked Nigerians to join hands in promoting peaceful co-existence.

JTF sources said at the weekend that Zabarmari ward was one of the identified havens of the insurgents.

In a separate incident on Saturday evening, three Boko Haram suspects were also arrested by members of Vigilance Youths Group, a.k.a. “Civilian JTF” at the Borno Express Motor Park while travelling to Jigawa State to launch attacks.

A top military officer in the JTF told The Guardian Sunday that the terror suspects were killed before they could launch attacks in Zabarmari ward of Jere Local Council of Maiduguri.

His words: “We received an intelligence report that a high number of Boko Haram terrorists had regrouped and were residing and hiding in this ward. We mobilised our troops to the area, and on reaching the place, the suspects upon noticing our presence, began to chant ‘Allahu Akbar,’ (God is Great) and started shooting sporadically at the JTF troops. We, therefore, had no option than to repel the attackers; we succeeded in shooting dead 10 terrorists.

“We decided not to take away any of their corpses, we left them in the area, but the following day, when we mobilised our men to the area, we found out that hundreds of the terrorists were at one of the graveyards burying their dead ones, and when we approached, some of them started shooting at our troops which led to the exchange of gunfire for half an hour, that led to the killing of 40 of them.”

He further disclosed: “As I am talking to you now, our men are still in Zabarmari hunting for suspected terrorists who might have escaped the deadly encounter.”

Speaking on the arrests, the JTF source said: “The men of the JTF are highly delighted with the zeal/effort being put in place by the vigilance youths, popularly called Civilian JTF. They were yesterday (Saturday) able to arrest three Boko Haram suspects at the Borno Express Motor Park.

“They later handed them over to the JTF local commander. After their torture, one of them died. The terrorists are from Bama Local Council on a suicide mission to Jigawa and other states in the North. In fact, the deceased before his death told us that, already, all their weapons of massive destruction had been transported to the targeted areas; waiting for them to arrive before luck ran out on them.”

He said the other arrested suspects, who seemed to be in stable condition, promised to take the JTF men to Bama to show them some of their members’ hide-outs.

The Sultan, who spoke at the opening of a conference of Ulamas organised by the JNI on promoting peace and unity in Nigeria, condemned the perception of some well-placed Nigerians that Muslims and Islam were always against the search for peace and development of the nation.

Abubakar noted: “The main aim of our coming together today is to unite our brothers and sisters, especially the Ulamas. There will be peace, and if there is peace, there will be development and progress in our country and there will be total security in Nigeria.

“And if there is security, definitely, there will be development. What is happening in the northern part of the country is an unfortunate incident… maybe the Almighty Allah wants to correct our ways.

“I believe it is high time all of us came together and discussed those things that have been pestering our lives as Muslims in this country.”

The Sultan admonished all Muslims to unite under one umbrella in order to achieve their aspiration under one Nigeria.

“We are very aware just like any other people across the world of the challenges facing us as Muslims, not only in Nigeria; we believe somebody somewhere is pulling the string. We are begging Allah for constant prayers from all of you… “, he said.

In a paper delivered by an Islamic scholar, Prof. Shehu Galandaci, he said that the lack of concern for sound Islamic preaching by Ulamas had been the major problem that had heightened the problem of insecurity.

Galandaci urged all Ulamas to embrace sound Islamic doctrine that would help in returning the country to peace, unity and progress.

In his own address, the Governor of Kaduna State, Alhaji Mukhtar Ramallan Yero, also argued that Muslim scholars had a role to play if the country must reverse the unjustifiable animosity between Muslims and the other adherents of other faiths in the country.

He said: “To bring lasting peace and unity to Nigeria, Muslim scholars must commit themselves to preaching peace to the people...and they must do this by relating harmoniously with Christians.”

Eleven Kenyans held in Nigeria following the deportation of controversial businessman Anthony Chinedu have arrived home.

It took the personal intervention of Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan to have the Kenyans leave after he waived the airport fees and they left 4 am Thursday.
On Wednesday, Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed announced that the Kenyan officials would travel to Nairobi after the conflict was “resolved”.
“Greetings, good news for Kenya as all the Kenyans held up in Nigeria are on their way back home,” she wrote on Twitter.
“I wish to thank the Kenyan Mission in Nigeria for the help, care and consular support provided to the Kenyan citizens as we resolved the issue,” she said.
Some of the Kenyan officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said they had prepared to leave on Wednesday.
“We were supposed to leave on Wednesday night but we were told there were certain clearances the aircraft had to go through. We were not told how long it would take to clear but we were told we can’t board until it is done,” said one of the officers.
Another source from the Nigerian High Commission said the aircraft had been blocked by the Nigerian military until it clears the airport fees. However, the source could not divulge the amount.
The aircraft, the crew and the officials were detained on June 3 while on assignment to deport Mr Chinedu and two other Nigerians, Christopher Nnanyelu and Oluwatosin Adebiyi.
On Wednesday, government Spokesman Muthui Kariuki said that President Goodluck had waived airport fees.
“We also appreciate the kind gesture of the Nigerian government for the waiver of the parking fees for the jet which had accumulated quite substantially,” he said in a statement.

MAIDUGURI—Youths Vigilante group in Borno State, otherwise known as Civilian JTF, weekend, arrested 31 Boko Haram suspects in various locations in Maiduguri metropolis amidst ovations and commendations from residents and soldiers of the Joint Task Force, JTF.

The arrested sect members were immediately handed over to the various local sector commanders of JTF for further interrogation and investigation.

The suspects were believed to have been dislodged from their training camps at Sambisa Games Reserves Forests and Kirenowa, a border community with Chad, after troops attacked the camps following declaration of state of emergency by President Goodluck Jonathan.

According to the chairman of the vigilante group, Abubakar Mallum, the suspects were nabbed at NEPA Market junction, Anguwar Doki, Shuwari II and Gambouru market, among other areas of Maiduguri metropolis.

JTF commended the youths in the joint manhunt of fleeing Boko Haram suspects.

Its spokesman, Lt.-Col Sagir Musa said: “JTF commended these youths for assisting our soldiers and police arrest these terrorists’ suspects among people living in the metropolis.

“The youths have also renewed their efforts in supporting the JTF in the current operations.”

Speaking on the youths’ modus operandi yesterday in Maiduguri, the group’s leader, Mallum said: “Although some people call us ‘Civilian JTF’ in the manhunt of Boko Haram suspects in Maiduguri, we members of this Youths Vigilante group operate at strategic locations with ordinary sticks and cutlasses.”
