texazzpete:i am not sure he has vista on his laptop ![]() |
@lynx what do you expect? with a machine like that Ubuntu was flying! just some drawback. the fingerprint reader doesn't work, switchable graphic doesn't work, you have to make the switch from the BIOS., and some useful properiety thinkpad software i love don't work in linux ![]() i learnt that openSUSE and Fedora have the fingerprint driver. linux works great with thinkpads. IBM(lenovo) has long supported linux in thinkpads. |
lynxnoon:it depends on your budget. i personally own a lenovo Thinkpad T400. cost me approx. £1000. got it in UK. i don't like my screen too small or big, so i settled for a 14 incher and i like a lappie i can carry around effortlessly with a battery life of about 5hours! i use a lot of business softwares so i chose a powerful processor: intel core 2 duo P8600, 2.4Ghz clockspeed, 1066Mhz FSB. 320GB HDD. switchable graphic.(ATI discrete video card plus intel integrated video card) rugged build, spill-resistant key board, touch light(thinklight) etc. The machine is just tight. for about £730 you could get a lenovo thinkpad R series which share almost the same features as the T series. anyway do your research, and let me know. |
@lynx. i advise you to get a lenovo thinkpad from the T series. can get one for u |
somebody should pls buy starcomms! |
windows 7 has crashed on me. ![]() |
well on speed, just know this. MTN is not consistent, and MTN disappoints anyhow. while you may not achieve download speed above 1Mbps you never go below 0.3Mbps on ipnx. and again it depends on the plan you are on. good thing is that the modem serves as a router so you can share among more than 5 pcs |
ogagusps3:ipnx is good. some cafes use it. a cafe near my house uses it. just the tariff plan is well, unattractive and the only modem they have is one black box ![]() |
starcomms is sh1t now |
@victor. don't sweat it. when zoom launches evdo, they will advertise it. |
@Ex. that is why a thing like web browser should never be too integrated into the OS, like IE is hardware into windows (dont know if things have changed with Win7)what bigrovar meant ,which i understand, is that MS ingrained IE into core of the operating system. the bold words are "unedited error". but we get the point. anyway for your reading delight. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/10/22/security_report_windows_vs_linux/ http://www.securityfocus.com/columnists/188 |
MTN! too bad no 3G coverage in my area. |
@lynx. the speedtest screenshot shows the the isp is not even reltel. fake speed test. i have gone to their office. these guys don't have evdo network. they just sell second hand evdo compatible modem form verizon or sprint. @poster you can't watch video on 1x. period. |
zoom no get EVDO yet. abeg. no deceive yourself. |
i read a newspaper interview of the CEO saying reltel is planning to deploy EVDO. well if they have done so good. i am very sure they have not. but stop lying poster. you can not watch / stream videos on 1X. the map is where reltel has 1X footprint not EVDO coverage. olodo. |
i wonder why you guys buy laptops with funny names., haier ![]() now see the mess you are in. website they don't have? |
kend0a2j:let have the name of the USB modem. most modem work in linux without you installing anything. like the sierra wireless modems, novatel modems. |
@ poster. pls try watching some youtube videos or download a 32MB nokia pc suite and tell us how many years it took you. ![]() |
the antimalware "industry" for Windows is a billion dollar business. the debate about the security of OSes (linux, Windows & OS X) has been on for a very long time. the seemingly more secure nature of Linux or Mac OS X is not because it attracts a few number of malware programmers, these OSes are by nature tight. well i won't go into technical here. Linux is deployed on a massive scale by large corporations at server and desktop levels. now, if i am a malware programmer, who should be my target? simple pc users like me and you who do no more than log on to nairaland to post? |
Ex Inferis:no Ex. it baffles me that a company like MS would continue to churn out OS with intrinsic security vulnerability and needs third party app to make it secure. ![]() do you have any antimalware app installed in your macbook? |
i will wait patiently for windows 8. the windows OS that would not require a third party antivirus |
lynxnoon:by then u should have saved enough money to buy a genuine copy nah. |
@bigrovar. have you tried this linux distro, XANDROS? |
] of course, it still doesnt have anything to trump Mac OS X yet especially with the superb new techs in Snow Leopard, but its still a redemption for the travesty that vista is. granted, there is nothing in win 7 that SHOULDNT have been in vista, all the features are like 3 years old, but at leats its fast
Leopard or Snow Leopard is a great piece of OS. no doubt. but have you checked out the spec of the apple machines(macbook pro, imac) that this OS is installed? common, these are high configurations. which OS will not fly in pc with such configuration? why not run Snow Leopard in a celeron machine with 512 RAM and integrated video card, and tell me it better than xp, vista, win 7 or linux. ![]() |
wetin de happen to starcomms? i am under a starcomms mast now, still can't a small file in my mail. ![]() |
truth is apple care less about markets outside the usa. sales contribution from markets outside the usa can be considered insignificant to the overall sales pie. i love this company sha. i only wish it will one day license it OS to other OEMs. that will put an end to microsoft dominance. imagine the snow leopard in my thinkpad T400. |
it's only in the US that the Iphone has generated maddening prelaunch buzz. It's only in the US people get dazzled, awed, bewildered and confused by a simple gadget like the Iphone. Do you know how many persons turned to buy the Iphone 3GS in Japan? One! ![]() |
Samunosuke:starcomms has rolled out EVDO Rev. A in Calabar and Ibadan. myspace:truth is the 3GB data cap on MTN is more than enough for most folks who just browse web pages and a few downloads. in fact one might not even exceed 2GB in 30days using MTN that way. Zoom operates on cdma 1x. i must confess it's better than starcomms 1x. starcomms has no EVDO coverage in Aluu/ Choba areas. MTN has 3G in full bars in these areas. |
@Ex. i see you spare no effort in "educating" my friend Cabali. nice job you guys are doing here. this is the only thread worthy of my attention in the phone section right now. |
if you have a machine with spec that can run vista smoothly, you can make vista look like xp. similarly you can can make xp look like vista. anyhow you are running Windows ![]() |
The Linux desktop has seen major innovation of late, with KDE 4 launching new features, GNOME announcing a new desktop, and Ubuntu embarking on a redesign campaign. But Linux pundit Bruce Byfield asks, do average users really want any of these things? He points to instances of user backlash, and concludes 'Free software is still driven by developers working on what interests or concerns them. The problem is, the days when users of free software were also its developers are long gone, but the habits of those days remain. The result is that developers function far too much in isolation from their user base/quote] |
@dual core. have you bought anything on the nigerian site? what's the mode of payment? |
