Guys am working on a custom version of ubuntu optimized for maths, statistics, and science students generally. It is originally developed for the University were i work. but i hope to share it with people freely once am done. This version of ubuntu is based on jaunty jackalope. and its will be called Ubuntu AUST Edition (after African University of Science and Technology the school were i work and which i developed it for use by our students) currently all is done. but the cd is till at beta and am currently testing it. but its been stable so far. it comes preinstalled with many science educational tools like Scilab, Octave, kile Latex etc. Once am done i hope to distribute it freely.

a clean install is the best way really. for a successful upgrade, a reliable internet connection is a major factor, something our isp here can not guarantee us. i gave up trying to follow the upgrade path for mint7

vista sp2 does no harm. in fact my vista seems to have "stabilised". just make sure you have sp1 and have installed all important updates.

setting an ad-hoc internet sharing network using starcomms does not work again. the thing is so slow to support internet sharing. sad

well, i downloaded and installed the service pack. it when smoothly. nothing spectacular in performance yet that i have observed, but one thing i love now is: setting up ad-hoc internet network sharing from laptop is as easy as ever and very stable too!

just install Zimbra for linux. very fast. you have your gmail and yahoo mail account in one place. i don't use any of those funny email clients

i cant go near sp1 talk less of sp2!i installed sp1 and my laptop failed to recognise my sierra 580 mdc.i had to restore my system with alacrity.i will only upgrade when i use up the money i spent obtaining my archaic data card

there is a quick fix for that. check out the starcomms thread. hayprof provided a link.

Lenovo(former IBM PC division) makes the most standard durable everyday laptop. I did some crazy demos with Lenovo notebooks and still worked.It could hold up to 150lbs, that helps give the screen and additional layer of protection. Panasonic tough book is for customized environment and is very expensive. Check out Lenovo T/R/W series.

flyuche already has ubuntu installed on his system, he just wants to use virtualbox to try out other linux distributions , i never recommend wubi for most people due to the fact that its just a way to test linux, and not meant to be a final solution.

exactly. i am running xp now in my virtualbox in fullscreen mode.

i don't want ubuntu and linuxmint on the same machine. i have vista and linuxmint on my machine.(dualbooting). i just need the virtualbox to try out new os or distros.

@bigbrovar. i installed virtualbox, (i have no problem running it in my vista) this is the error meeasge i got when i wanted to run jaunty jackalope. how do i resolve this?
