Well my take is this, nothing good comes easy. Living here in the U.S you run into a lot of Nigerians that want to come back to Nigeria but are so afraid of the unknown. Nigeria remains a land of opportunity because of it's present crazy situation. If you know me you will understand what I am talking about, I left Nigeria in 1992, the first time I came back was in 2006 to set up a business. Boy, did I learn a lot from the experience. I built a business that grossed over 5 million USD within 2 years. The economy melt down took a hit on my company the exchange rate was killing and eventually the corporate in U.S closed down 12 markets worldwide, and my market in Nigeria was hit. It was though, I had brought my family down with me, things got difficult before we decided for the kids sake to move them back up here. I have an MBA from school here in the U.S, but nothing would have prepare me for the lesson I learned living in Nigeria those 3 years or so. I don't mean it in a bad way. Now I see what most people in Nigeria probably don't see, in terms of opportunity. Know now that out of the challenges, there are still a boat load of opportunities, but you have to pay your dues. I am up here now and just can't wait to get back on ground without care of the difficulty. Understand the fact that there must need be an opposition to all things, just how you manager the outcome its what is important.

So, let us not look at the mishap of others and deprive ourselves of the opportunity to be successful. Now think about how much can you afford to loose, and start from there. From my calculation, you can raise 25 day old birds to about 2.5kg with less than N20K. Within 7 weeks. If you succeed with that, you can increase your stock the next cycle, and from there you will learn what works and what doesn't.
The truth is that in the beinging, you can't leave it for someone else to run for you. You need to be there, close watch, taking notes and making corrections. Don't forget what being successful in this industry means. Just imagine a 2.5kg broiler that cost you about N600 or less to raise, turning around and selling it for about N750/kg that is about N1,875. That is a potential profit of about N1,125/bird. Now multiple that by the number of birds that you succeed in raising in a given cycle.

So, guys grab the bull by the horn and let ride it.

With your background, I think you have a good head start in this industry than most of us. Give it your attention and you will be successful.
Guys, remember, the hard work is in the beginning, once you established your poultry, i.e; have the right source where you buy your day olds, where you buy the feeds and your sales outlet. Once you have all these set up, it could be by your 3rd, 4th, or 5th cycle, you would have taken care of the hard part of getting into the poultry industry, you would have learned the ropes and paid your due. And of course, you will have some helpers in the farm that will help out with everything and at the same time learning from you, so that they can take care of the farm when you are on vacation.

@VULCAN, and @fasbio, Really, I don't think it takes rocket science to become a poultry farmer. No matter how you look at it and all the info you will get, you will gain the experience as you go. From your first poultry cycle, to when you become a guru, you will keep learning and keep inventing a better way to do it. So even if the 800,000 people on Nairaland lend in their ideas and solutions, every one of use that want to go into this business will have to learn one thing or the other in the process. One thing I leaned during my first cycle was never to leave what I can do myself to someone else to do. this is what happened, I left home very early on Sunday morning leaving my wife to help turn off the lights/heat in the coop, to check the water, and to raise the tapolline that covered the sides of the coop. My wife got busy with the kids and forgot to do any of these things. The result, by 2:00pm, 13 birds that weighed 1.8kg each have died of heat exhaustion. The light was creating heat, the sun was super high, their water was gone and the tapolline kept the heat in. So imagine if the number was in the hundreds or thousands.

@ fasbio, Don't leave what you can do for someone else, who might not have the same kind of passion for it as you do. IF you do it right in Nigeria, you will make more money that you can ever make in UK. UK and U.S will be a vacation destination for you and not a place to work and hopping to survive. You can have best of both world.

@VULCAN, thanks for your thoughts, right now I just want an opportunity to get into the Nigerian market, if it gets to it, can work on exporting the finished products in the future, for now just want a piece of land to start from. I have an MBA from a college here in the U.S, so marketing my birds in Nigeria shouldn't be a big deal when I get to that bridge.

I will like to know how it is going for ya'll.

@akonucheinfo, go through this tread you will see the info you are looking for.

@ade101, I think no matter what ever advise you get here on the tread, you still need to do some due diligence on your part. Go out to your local restaurants, hotels or just meet the market women and introduce yourself and let them know that you will be coming out with a good product and at a very competitive price. Find out how much they are currently paying par Kg and look at doing better. I think doing this will give you a better idea of the market.

When I was doing my research, I visited a store along the road that sells life chicken, and I told them that I am raising some birds, they were interested in buying from me. They told me that they sell about 40 birds/week there. So with your 200 birds all you need is find 5 of those kind of outlets, and and you will have problem meeting their demand on a weekly bases. One thing I noticed in one of the books I read when I was doing the research, was that they only said that you should start llooking for your buyers when you are about 4 weeks into the game. Pretty much expressing that marketing or getting ride of the birds is not a big deal. Indicating that there is a huge market out there, you just need to dress up and go after it.

@brendan and the rest, I have emailed you guys the docs. @ brendan, take your time and go through this tread, from page 1 to 13, you will see post from people with a lot of experience, I am not an expert in this field, just have great love for it. When I ran my research in Lagos, I went through some not so conventional system just to prove that the V-mix works, i.e; I didn't clear the coop for 3 weeks, leave it to get wet and the water holders were pretty dirty, the water was messy looking which will be a breading room for Ecoli and other virus that can kill the birds. But because of the V-mix, virus or bacteria could not grow or even survive in those environment, It didn't matter how bad the water was or the coop, the birds was health and thrived.

There are books you can buy and they will give you more info on when to change the water, clean out the coop etc. And tell you the truth, a lot of this processes are common sense and your love for what you are doing.

I had wanted to bottle the Virushiled that I call Vmix and market it to farmer, but because I am not in the country at the moment so everything is on hold. So I will let you know when I am on ground and I won't even mind giving you some, (finished product) so that you can see how it works in your farm. It is an amazing product that practically reduces mortality rate of birds as a result of bacteria or virus to Zero. And enhances their growth rate, the taste, etc.

Just a quick comment, This poultry industry holds a great opportunity for everyone who is willing to put their shoulders to the wheel and push along. One of the things that I noticed in my research was that it cost me about N15,000 (Fifteen thousand Naira) to raise 25 day old chicks to 2.5kg within 7 weeks. I am thinking very very small scale project to teach people how they can do this, and they can turn around and sell the chicken for about N850/kg which will give them about N2,125 estimate par bird. Multiple that by 25 birds, that will give you N53,125. Some people work as a gas station attendant and makes about N15k/month that means N30k in 2 months. or a new graduate who will spend the next 2 years looking for work. These individuals could be trained on how to do this and they will be their own BOSS with enough time in the day to do other things they like and at the same time growing their poultry business. From 25 birds, they can increase their next set to 30, 40, 50 birds and the growth will continue.

The comfort here is that the Nigerian population will swallow any quantity you throw at them, so it doesn't matter how many people are involved in this industry, of course the game will then becomes marketing, products differentiation and packaging. I have never been this excited about any thing before.

Guys, I have a product in Nigeria called Fat burner, got it from the manufacturer in the U.S. it goes with a 30 days diet program. My wife used it and lost about 10kg in 22 days and she still maintained it this has been over 1 year now. Couple other women that bought it from our office, after the program they got pregnant. While on the program you learn to eat right. You only follow the diet with the product for just the program period and you don't have to use the product again, all you need to do is just moving on is watch what you eat to maintain your weight.
