You have to read in-between lines. BBC was merely quoting an unamed source. You could see that the statement that had the gun battle or duel description was in quote, indicating that it wasn't their statement, but a statement probably from the Nigerian police force. That statement is a typical way Nigerian police force describes certain of its actions against criminal elements.
