Was in church today and d priest was condemning those who "sag" and females or males that wear torn jeans. He claimed they are immoral acts,amongts others practiced by the youths of today. Though he didnt categorically say they are sins,but his trend of speech wit strong condemnation was heading in that direction.

This happened in the university of lagos, faculty of arts precisely during a Geography class. The name of the lecturer is Mr ogunkunle.

It's not as if this is the norms in Unilag, i say a big No. But this particular lecturer has been terrorizing us.

We have other lecturers who behaves well but this particular man is just something else i mean why will you tell adults like this to kneel and raise up hands just because they were not able to spell a particular word.

This lecturer rarely comes to class when he comes he spends most time sending students out and threatening them. He is just a disgrace to this wonderful university. We have very brilliant, decent lectures who respects us for who we are e.g their response to the dress code saga.

We are please begging the university to help caution lecturers like this so that our great unilag won't be a laughing stock amongst other universities.

Let me be sincere here: I expect this article to get me the chastisement and ire of some unscrupulous colleagues of mine in the medical profession who have embraced illegality and wanton unprofessionalism as their guiding principles.


But like seriously.....


.......I don't give a hoot!


If this article would make even one reckless doctor or nurse or any other health caregiver to shape up and practise medicine according to the guiding principles of professional excellence, then it would have been a huge success.


It is really a sad thing, because a lot of medical practitioners commit unspeakably horrible crimes and go scot-free just because majority of Nigerians are unaware of their health rights or even when they know about them, there are no available institutions and structures on ground to investigate these cases of malfeasance to a final conclusion. Because of this, doctors and other health care practitioners arrogate to themselves the power of a god- everyone else must worship and bow before them, even if by force. This ought not to be. And as such, we must take it upon ourselves to work collectively in identifying the few bad eggs in the system, who are denting the image of this nobel profession lest they cause us all to lose our worth and social value.


The follwoing are the 5 UNFORGIVABLE medical mistakes which anyone can sue his or her doctor for:



1. BREACH OF PATIENT CONFIDENTIALITY

This one is like the holy grail of medical practice. It is talked about so much that it is impossible for any doctor who trained from an accredited medical school to claim to be ignorant of it. And the rule is simple: at no time should a doctor or any other member of the health team discuss or disclose the patient's medical information or state of health to anyone who is not part of the medical team caring for him or her. The patient's medical information must be kept confidential at all times, except at such a time when it becomes inevitable to discuss the said patient with another doctor or member of health team in order to reach a final diagnosis or agreement on the best treatment modality for the patient. If evidence, at any time, abounds that a doctor has disclosed your medical information to someone who should not be privy of such information, you have the legal backing to sue that doctor and take away his/her practicing medical licence!



2. FAILURE TO GET INFORMED CONSENT

What is informed consent? It the permission (in the form of a signed document) granted in full knowledge of the possible consequences, given by a patient to a doctor for treatment with full knowledge of the possible risks and benefits. A bit technical, right? Here is what it means- before any doctor performs any medical procedure on you, that doctor must first explain the procedure in detail, including all the risks involved with that procedure to you, after which you can decide to give or not give the doctor the go ahead to carry out the procedure. Without your approval, it is an offence for any doctor to perform any medical procedure on you, EXCEPT at such a time when you are unconscious or in a very critical situation during which no family member of yours is available give assent to the procedure on your behalf. Any doctor found culpable of this offence can and should be sued.



3. ASSAULT OF PATIENT(S)

Assault, in any form, is an offence, even more so in the medical profession where there is zero tolerance for such. It is considered a rare privilege that we, medical practitioners, find ourselves in a position where we can save people's lives and determine the quality of life they live subsequently. This is very rare privilege that must never be abused but should instead fill the caregiver with so much compassion to treat patients with some respect and dignity. This is the standard practice. It is part of the hippocratic oath of medical practice. So really, it becomes very worrying and quite appalling when patients complain about doctors or nurses who assaulted or are assaulting them. It is evil and criminal for a doctor to assault you physically, sexually or psychologically. If you the courage to expose that evil doctor or health care practitioner to the right authorities, he or she would adequately sanctioned and dealt with.



4. SOLICITING SEXUAL FAVOURS BEFORE TREATMEMT

This is one that is quite common in this part of the world. I first encountered it when a friend of mine told me of an instance when she visited a particular hospital (name withheld) for treatmentg for some condition she didn't want her immediate family members to know about. The doctor who saw her, after she had made it clear she didn't want her immediate family to know about it, threatened to expose her if she refused sex with him! Yes, it happened here in Lagos. That is just one incident out of thousands of other unreported cases. And it is very disgraceful and evil and sick. Any doctor, male or female, who solicits sexual favours from his or her patient in return for treatment is culpable of professional misconduct and hence liable to be sued and jailed! In fact, the code of medical ethics prohibits sexual relationship with a doctor and a current patient (when the patient is still undergoing treatment). So really, except a medical practitioner wants to risk litigation, it is to his or her benefit to desist from soliciting or accepting sexual gratifications, even when willingly offered to the doctor by the patient during the course of treatment.



5. COMPLICATIONS RESULTING FROM FAILURE OF THE DOCTOR TO REFER A PATIENT AT THE RIGHT TIME

Standard medical practice makes it very clear that a doctor must, quickly and without delay, refer his or her patient to the next doctor with the requisite skills to treat the patient's condition when it becomes apparent that his (the first doctor) skill or experience is not sufficient to give the patient the best possible treatment.This is how it should be. But trust some doctors to hold on to their patients, ceasing the opportunity to extort and milk them dry until the patient's condition detoriates to a critical stage where complications arise, and in some unfortunate instances, even death occurs. This is pure wickedness from the pit of hell! Now, if it can be proved that the said doctor truly did hold on to a patient even when he or she knew that prompt referral was mandatory and the next line of action, he or she can and should be sued for gross professional misconduct. It is one of the unforgivables of medical jurisprudence.

More accounts have emerged on the events leading to the crash of a 59-passenger luxury bus on its way from Aba, Abia State, which plunged into a canal at Owode Elede, Lagos, killing three passengers and injuring 23 others.

One of the passengers in the bus, Kenneth Ohai, said as the bus hit the median around 3am on Friday morning and veered off the road, nosediving into the canal in the process, the little child his co-passenger was carrying on her lap bounced off the window and fell into the water.

He said the woman immediately dived out of the window to save her baby.

Saturday PUNCH confirmed from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency that the unidentified woman and her child were unharmed, as they were both rescued after.

According to LASEMA, the child could not have been more than one year old.

Ohai, who was also one of the unharmed passengers rescued at the scene, explained that he believed that the driver must have been momentarily distracted before the crash.

“It was not as if there was a tyre blowout. Truly, if it had slowed down in that part of the road, the bus would not have hit the concrete demarcating the road.

“When it hit the median, the speed was too much for the driver to put the bus right and it went the other way again and hit the side of the canal. We were all screaming as it went down. The way it fell, I thought a lot of people would have died.”

Another survivor, Kelechukwu Ese, said many of his co-travellers escaped through the windows of the bus, adding that he could not explain how he found himself beside the canal.

He said, “I boarded the bus from Enugu State. I wanted to attend an event in Yaba, (Lagos). I sat by the window side and was asleep. Screams of other passengers woke me up. I thought I was dreaming. People started jumping out of the windows. And before I knew what was happening, I landed on the ground with my knees.

“I didn’t feel the pain initially and that was why I declined to be taken with others to a hospital after we were given first aid treatment. I am now feeling some pains.”

One of the three fatalities of the bus crash was the bus conductor, who was said to have fallen into the water because he sat beside the door.

A LASEMA official said that as he fell, the bus might have fallen on him.

The rescue operation at the scene of the accident was carried out by officials of LASEMA, Lagos State Fire Service, Federal Road Safety Corps, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, National Emergency Management Agency, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Rapid Response Squad and operatives from the Owode Police Station.

Nine passengers with more serious injuries were rushed to the Lagos State Trauma Centre at the tollgate for treatment, while 14 persons were reportedly treated on the spot by men of the Lagos State Ambulance Service and luggage of the victims were handed over to the police.

One of the residents, Atolagbe Akande, a local diver, who assisted emergency officials in the rescue operation, said he was woken up by the impact of the crash.

He said, “My house is not far from the canal. Around 3am, I heard a loud sound of something falling. I initially thought I was dreaming. Subsequently, I heard cries for help. That was when I realised something terrible had happened.

“I called some neighbours and went to the scene. The emergency officials also arrived the scene a few minutes after.”

The wreckage of the vehicle was removed from the canal with a LASEMA crane and towed to the Owode division.

“One of the deceased was identified as Yahya Sidi, a driver, aged about 40 years,” an official told Saturday PUNCH.

The LASEMA General Manager, Mr. Adesina Tiamiyu, urged motorists to exercise caution on roads, adding that proper investigation would be carried out on the accident.

He said, “The agency received a distress call at about 3.23am on Friday via the emergency toll free number 767/112 concerning a luxury bus with registration number GDD 386 YE Anambra, which belongs to GUO Transport Service Co. Limited. The bus was en route to Maza Maza from Aba, Abia State.

“According to preliminary investigations conducted at the scene of the incident, the bus skidded off its track while speeding and plunged into the canal.

“The bus with 59 passengers on board had 23 people injured and were treated on the spot by a joint team of LASEMA paramedics and LASAMBUS.

“Nine out of the treated victims were taken to the Lagos State Trauma Centre at the tollgate for further treatment, while two adult males and a female were recovered dead from the canal.

“Motorists should be safety-conscious and avoid excessive speeding while driving, especially when embarking on night journeys.”

The FRSC Sector Commander, Lagos State Command, Hygnius Omeje, confirmed that two bodies had been recovered as of 6am, saying that casualties could be more.

“As of the time I got the report from our men at the scene, two bodies had been found, while the divers continued searching. A couple of others were injured,” he said.

Tears flowed freely at The Synagogue, Church Of All Nations (SCOAN) in Lagos, on Sunday 12th February 2017 following the emotional testimony of Praise Sunday, a young boy literally rescued from the jaws of death.

At the tender age of 12, Praise’s world came crashing down when armed robbers mercilessly slaughtered his mother and younger sister before his eyes. The heartless attack, which occurred on May 8th 2016, almost claimed Praise’s life but for ‘Divine intervention’

According to the young boy from Agbor, Delta State, the bandits first bound their feet and hands before demanding for money from his mum Edith, a widower struggling to run a small provisions store.

When the meagre amount available in the house was presented without an accompanying bank card, the thieves became vulgar and violent.

“They took my sister inside the room, cut her neck and left her dead on the floor,”
Praise soberly recalled, much to the shock of the congregation. She was only 10 years old. “They then carried my mum, raped her and slaughtered her; they stabbed her in so many places.”

The young boy had just witnessed the gruesome mutilation of his beloved family - but the robbers weren’t finished.
“They left her dead on the floor and came back for me. They took me into the room where I saw my mum and sister lying in a pool of blood. They then cut my neck and stabbed me in the chest.”
Praise was thrown roughly on the floor as the criminals took their leave, assuming he had already died.

Hands and feet helplessly tied with blood spurting from the gaping wound on his neck, it seemed the end had come for Praise Sunday. Then, something extraordinary happened!

“I managed to open my eyes and saw something white, sparkling and tall like a human being. It carried me, took me to my neighbor’s gate, shook it and then disappeared.”

When his neighbour’s rushed out, they found Praise’s bloodied body dumped at their doorstep, his arms and legs bound together. Raising the alarm, they rushed him to hospital.

Lapsing in and out of consciousness and fighting for his life, Praise was taken to the General Hospital in Agbor before being transferred to the Federal Medical Centre.

“Blood was pumping out like a shower; they could not control it,” he recalled of the traumatic ordeal.

Although Praise miraculously survived the attack following emergency surgery and the usage of "T.B. Joshua’s Morning Water", he was left with his vocal chords severely damaged and a pipe inserted into his throat. For nine long months, he could not utter a single word.

After seven operations at medical institutions across the country yielding no result and several pleas for financial aid to government bodies within Delta State falling on seemingly deaf ears, the family decided to pay a visit to The Synagogue, Church Of All Nations (SCOAN) in Lagos.

Hearing of his heartbreaking ordeal, T.B. Joshua – well known for his philanthropic gestures – instantly sprang into action, promising to sponsor Praise’s travel overseas for more advanced medical attention.

Shortly afterwards, the young boy left for Cape Town, South Africa with his caring aunt Mabel, “all expenses paid for by Prophet T.B. Joshua and Emmanuel TV partners”.

There, a four-hour major operation was conducted at Life Vincent Pallotti Hospital in Cape Town, overseen by specialists Dr Martin Vanlierde and Professor Mark De Groot.

Given a clean bill of health after several months of check-ups, Praise returned to Nigeria to testify that his vocal abilities had been completely restored.

A total of $50,000 (N25m) was spent by Joshua on Praise’s trip, covering his welfare, travelling expenses and medical bills.
