breezy147: So who gave Mba the assist to score in the final? Look at it this way. Everyone in a team contributes, but not everyone wins the man of the match award. You measure a player's contribution by the value they offer. Messi for example makes the difference in a lot of games for Barcelona.
Victor Moses at the Afcon was immense. We scored a total of 11 goals in that tournament and VM was involved in almost all the goals. He had 2 goals and 4 assists. Infact his assist got Mba the goal in the final.
So back to the bone of contention, when we praise a player like that, it is not an attempt to belittle the contribution of others in the team. Rather it is a venture to reward the effort of a player who has been more outstanding than the rest.
Based on stats (ceteris paribus), without VM we would not have won that afcon. It is as simple as that. Confirm. |

We need to start building for 2022 WC with the young goalies we have currently. This is the best time to give those green horns the necessary game time and not on the eve of a major tourney like the World Cup. That's if the young keeper is better than Enyeama. |

darkelf: Ighalo: How can Nigeria replace departed striker?
The Afcon top scorer has retired from international football, and he won’t be easy to replace
Farewell Ighalo Odion Ighalo called time on his international career this weekend, drawing the curtain on a four-year tenure with the Super Eagles in which he scored 16 goals in 35 appearances.
Despite being criticised during his time with Nigeria—notably when he missed a decisive sitter as the West Africans fell to Argentina during the World Cup—Ighalo goes out on a high following the Africa Cup of Nations.
He scored five goals in the continental showpiece in Egypt, earning him the Golden Boot, and now goes out on a high.
However, how can Gernot Rohr replace the striker in whom he’s shown faith throughout his time at the helm?
Here are five options…
Kelechi Iheanacho The Leicester City striker has struggled to adapt to life at the King Power Stadium since being sold by Manchester City, and has paid with his place in the Nigeria squad.
He was cut from Rohr’s selection after netting just once in 30 Premier League outings last term, but at only 22, he has time on his side.
If Iheanacho can rediscover the form he showed earlier in his career, at Leicester or elsewhere, then he can return to his rightful spot as Nigeria’s leading man.
Paul Onuachu The towering forward may have—inadvertently—become Nigeria’s leading man following Ighalo’s exit, having been one of only two other strikers on Rohr’s list.
His goalscoring record in Denmark is excellent, while he also took to life as an international instantly with an early goal in a friendly against Egypt.
However, he’d change the style of football Nigeria play—being such a towering target man—while his relatively meagre playing time at the Afcon suggests Rohr isn’t completely convinced.
Victor Osimhen The only other striker on Nigeria’s squad list for Russia was Osimhen, although he received even less playing time than Onuachu, managing just 45 minutes during the course of the competition.
The attacker is only 20, and while highly rated, can’t yet be considered a viable leading man for the national side.
With more regular playing time at club level, for Sporting Charleroi in Belgium, Osimhen can refine his craft, while Ighalo’s retirement should raise his place in Nigeria’s pecking order.
Henry Onyekuru Unlike the other players on this list, Onyekuru isn’t a natural striker.
He’s made his name as a wideman during his career, while he was also trialled—and excelled—as left wing-back during a loan spell at Anderlecht.
However, what Onyekuru does have in his locker is goals; he scored 14 in the Super Lig for Galatasaray last term, and 27 across three seasons in the Belgian leagues with Eupen and then the Purple & White.
He’s found gametime hard to come by out wide—playing for just 12 minutes at the Nations Cup—and with Samuel Chukwueze and Samuel Kalu only likely to get stronger, a move to a more central role could suit all parties.
Tammy Abraham Nigeria tried to recruit Abraham before, only to have their fingers burned—in somewhat humiliating fashion—as the Chelsea striker rejected the NFF’s overtures in order to represent England.
However, two years down the line, despite having featured for the Three Lions in friendlies, he’s yet to make a competitive debut and hasn’t been called up since.
Now back at Chelsea after a productive loan spell at Aston Villa, Abraham may find himself back in Gareth Southgate’s sights, but if not, he could be a replacement for—and even an upgrade on—Ighalo.

ChrisKels: Ode does one play 99 matches in a season? Do Marcolino scored 20goals for Angers in 99matches. No Tanzanian player can boast of such feat.
As a DMF, Moise played 83matches for Brest scoring 5 goals in the ligue1. Again no Tanzanian player can boast of such record.
Levy Madinda contributed his quota in ensuring that Celta got back to Laliga. Again no Tanzanian player can boast of a minute in a league as good as the segunda. So I reiterate, in all ramifications, Gabon had better players than Tanzania just paraded. QED M The only exception was Samatta He did not score 20 goals prior to the AFCON and all the goals were scored in lowly Ligue 2. That's poor for a CF. Snapshot 1 Mouse only played 30 games in Ligue 1 a season before the AFCON season but prior to the AFCON, he could not play a single. The rest were in Ligue 2. Obscure league. Levy Madinda didn't play a single match for Celta Vigo that season they got promotion to the la Liga. Stop lying. Snapshot 2.

ChrisKels: Fabrice Do marcolino played 99matches for Angers scoring 20goals a season before
Moise Apanga played 83matches for Brest from 2009-2012 scoring 5 goals as a DMF.
Ligue 1: 1979–80, 1981–88, 1989–91, 2010– 13, 2019— present
Levy Madinda helped Celta return to the Laliga in 2012
Loyd Palun played over 25 matches for Nice in the ligue1 prior the Afcon
The so called average Aubameyang scored 35goals in 73matches, in the ligue1 for Ettienne 2011-13,
In the 2011/12 season, Le Mans had their best run and Ovono featured in more than 30 games and they narrowly missed out on promotion to the ligue1. The following season he joined Soachux.
Remember this is about Tanzania, so tell me, besides Samatta, who else can u mention in the Tanzanian team with a resume as good as what that Gabonese squad of 2012 boasted of? Fabrice Do marcolino never scored 20 goals in a season in his whole entire life. How did he score 20 goals a season before? Infact, he didn't play a single match in lowly Ligue 2 the season before AFCON and he only managed to score 1 goal in 14 matches in obscure Ligue 2 prior to the AFCON. The other 6 goals were scored after the AFCON. Moise Apanga only played in the Ligue 1 in the previous season but he never played a single match in the season prior to the AFCON due to injury. Besides, he was on the bench for games during the AFCON. Levy Madinda played only two matches for Celta Vigo which happened to be his first matches in his professional career. In fact, he only played one match prior to the AFCON. Do you me to continue to expose your false claims? ChrisKels: U are only making noise. I just proved they were not poor contrary to what u and ur goons wanted to force down our throat. They had a better squad than Tunisia and Morroco of 2012. And they were far better than the Tanzania and Madagascar of today. QED

Moise Apanga ligue1
Andre Poko - Bordeaux ligue1
Levy Madinda - Celta Vigo laliga
Junior Ndong - Auxerre ligue1
Eric Mouloungui - Nice ligue1
Daniel Cousin who once scored 26 goals for Lens in the ligue1
Aubemyang the best striker in the ligue1 - Ettienne
Lyod Palun - Nice ligue1
Stephane Nguema who was a forward for PSG a season before that tourney, he also was a former Rennes striker
Ecuele Manga one of the best Centre Backs in the ligue1 from 2010-14
Ekwa Ebanega - Auxerre ligue1
In Didier Ovono, they had one of the best goalkeepers in Africa then and also like many of his teams mates was plying his trade in the ligue1
So bro what took Gabon that far was individual brilliance and sheer luck bkus the squad oozed class (experienced quality players) playing at the highest level, it has little or nothing to do with Rohr's tactical prowess. In fact it was Rohr's tactical ineptitude that denied them a place in the Semis. Compare this squad to Tanzania who can only boast of Sammata in the Belgian league, then u will understand Rohr didnt do anything remarkable. In 19 games with these names in the team, Rohr could only win a paltry 8
And to that guy shouting that they beat Morroco, it was Chamakk's Morroco not Ziyech's. That Morrocan side was so poor, and player for player, they were no match for Gabon bkus Gabon paraded far better players individually. And they were not the Madagasis of 2012 thats so wrong bkus they had players, Madagascar doesn't. In fact some of our starters this year couldn't have started for that Gabonese side, at least I know that no reasonable coach would bench Auba for Ighalo or Manga of 2012 for Ekong of today None of those Gabonese in their state as at that time will make the bench of this current SE. MetalJigsaw: The Six Strikers Who Can Replace Physical Ighalo As Super Eagles Number 9
allnigeriasoccer.com Jul 21, 2019 1:00 PM
The Six Strikers Who Can Replace Physical Ighalo As Super Eagles Number 9
Following Nigeria's third place finish at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, striker Jude Odion Ighalo shocked Nigerian football faithful by announcing his international retirement after team captain John Mikel Obi announced his own expected retirement after 14 years service to the country.
Izuchukwu Okosi in this piece examines the best candidates from a lot to take up the role as the Eagles target another AFCON qualification in 2021 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
1. Victor Osimhen
Osimhen was only in action for 45 minutes at the just concluded AFCON, the third place final against Tunisia.
He will be a threat for defences especially in aerial duels.
Perhaps the record top scorer at the FIFA U-17 World Cup with 10 goals needs to add some more physicality to his game as alluded to by Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr.
2. Stephen Odey
The former MFM striker who has moved to Belgian Pro League champions KRC Genk from Swiss side FC Zurich scored 10 goals in 32 matches for his former club last season.
Odey is technically good, has got lethal shots in his arsenal and can offer some physical presence that Ighalo did.
3. Anthony Nwakaeme
The popular cliché in football that a player/team is as good as their last match continues to be a feature of this piece.
Trabzonspor of Turkey striker Anthony Nwakaeme scored 10 league goals in 27 matches last season and played against tough strikers in the competitive Turkish top flight.
Nwakaeme's strength and experience could be vital in the Eagles going forward.
4. Simy Nwankwo
Scoring 14 goals in 33 Serie B matches should not be scorned at and Nwankwo will be an invaluable part of the Super Eagles if Rohr trusts him enough.
The beanpole striker was in Nigeria's 2018 World Cup squad after showing great qualities in friendlies prior to the tournament but he has not played for the team afterwards.
5. Paul Onuachu
The FC Midtjylland of Denmark striker scored a memorable goal, a wonder strike within a minute against Egypt in an international friendly in March and perhaps sealed his place in Nigeria's AFCON squad.
The striker wasn't at his predatory best when he got his chance at the Nations Cup but nonetheless the talent is obvious. He scored 17 league goals in 30 league games last season.
6. Taiwo Awoniyi
The Liverpool-owned striker Taiwo Awoniyi is one of coach Imama Amapokobo's key players in the U-23 Eagles but he could also be an important member of the Super Eagles in few years time.
Verdict: The Super Eagles may have top strikers in their fold when the next AFCON hold in Cameroon in 2021 or at the FIFA World Cup in 2022 in Qatar.
However at the moment, in few months time when qualifiers begin before those big tournaments, our top picks in the absence of Ighalo would be the aforementioned for either their experience, goals return or physical attributes.
We are by no means saying other Nigerian players do not deserve a place in the team.
Next season could present us a player who takes the world by storm. Who wrote this junk? |

This is one of the most difficult career decisions I have had to take. It’s been an amazing 5 years journey, but after due consultation and extensive discussion with my family I have decided it’s time for me to retire from the National team. It’s has been an eventful and most memorable opportunity to serve my country with pride, passion and to contribute my quota to the development of our football, the memories would stay with me for a long time and I’m immensely grateful. It is now time to concentrate on Club football and give the younger players chance to learn and grow. I would love to thank the NFF,coach Gernot Rohr for believing in me against all odds,to my teammates for their professionalism and team spirit without you guys I wouldn’t have achieved so much with this team. To NIGERIAN football fans all over the world,I SAY THANK YOU, you were always there to cheer us on and our 12th players every time we step into the pitch. I will be watching and cheering the SUPER EAGLES from this side. THANK YOU.....signing OUT This guy contributed in qualifying us to the world cup and AFCON but some people wanted him out just to pave way for their own players. Ighalo's criticism has nothing to do with football related matters but out of jealousy and envy. Bring em down syndrome to promote personal agenda else.......mo we leave stori. |
