Bross sorry about the delay.,the VO gave you a blank cheque by saying that he would be asking you just one question.'why that sch'? you should have talked about the school's course curriculum and researches which aligns with your area of specilization.

In my opinion,I think you should say that you have made more extensive research about the school and the course you intend to study.
Daniel3366:
Gurus in the house please I need your opinion on this question but before that, I was denied because I couldn't give enough reason for choosing my school(Murray state University). Now the question is

Q- What is different from your case right now from before?

Please how do I answer this, because I think it has to be related to my reason for Denial

VISA INTERVIEW
My F1 visa was approved yesterday (11/12/2015) at the Lagos embassy cheesy

MY EXPERIENCE
I got to the US embassy around 6:15am and to my utter dismay I met quite a number of people on the queue angry . I proceeded to where I did my first security check. While I was being checked, my international passport mistakenly fell on the ground and one of the "Oyinbo" guy looked at me and said "Your visa will be denied" . I was shocked! I just locked up. Fast forward to the biometric center. I gave the woman my i20, sevis fee, passport (international and photograph). The woman looked at me and said " Your i20 is not complete". I tried to respond and she said something like "you want to teach me my job, you are likely to have a problem with the consular officer" cry . At this point, my confidence is almost close to zilch embarassed . I quickly verified with other F1 applicants and I realized that my i20 is actually complete and the supposed missing part is at the back of my i20. undecided

I think all F1 applicants were interviewed by the lady in window 8. After a short while, I concluded that the lady has been programmed to say " Unfortunately, you are not qualified for the US Visa shocked ". She just dey dash out denials like "mama Christmas " grin . But I think the process is fair.

INTERVIEW
Me: Good morning, how are you doing?
VO: Good morning, so you are going to university of Arkansas at Little Rock
Me: Yes
VO: oh, you are going for a doctorate, what is your research interests?
Me: My primary research interests is in the area of computational medicine and bio-informatics. I am looking at how ICT tools can be used to enhance healthcare delivery in developing countries like Nigeria. I sha talk a lot of rubbish and yes I told her that I worked with the Health Informatics research lab during my NYSC and I was involved in the development of an healthcare solution, I elicited requirements from medical practitioners, modelled the system using UML and developed it using Java. I finished by saying something like " I believe integrating my knowledge with this degree will help me tackle some of the challenges facing healthcare delivery in Nigeria. (You see, I talk a lot of rubbish - me self know )
VO: so what are the challenges facing healthcare delivery in Nigeria using ICT tools
Me (I no expect am): well, I think electricity because erratic power supply will hinder medical practitioners from using healthcare solution. Also, unstable internet because the medical practitioners wont have a timely access in retrieving patients information.
VO: Who will be sponsoring you?
Me: my dad
VO: what does he do?
Me: I told her what he is into and before I could even finish, she said "Your visa has been approved"
Me: thank you
VO: you are welcome, have a nice day

APPRECIATION
Thanks to @sirRiddy grin and everyone that has contributed on this thread, you have helped so many people without knowing. God bless you! smiley

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Well, I didn't fast (I like chow lipsrsealed ) neither did I pray undecided(maybe my mama prayer fit dey do the background job sha). I even had fun before the interview wink (you don't need to know the details, you too like aproko). I really think what the VO is looking for is "purposefulness". At least you should be able to articulate why studying in the US is the best thing for you. I think one lady was denied because when the VO asked her why she chose the school, she responded with "That's the only school that gave me an admission or stuffs like that". Another was talking about groundnut oil and so on shocked (she sounded desperate to me - think she is going for MS in food science).

In sum, be confident.
congrats bro. what works for u might not work for your brother saying that you didn't pray and fast, and even hard fun before interview.

Bro,pls come out straight and be sincere with us here. Djmakson I think have said it all what could have transpired between you and the consular.pls, affirm to djmakson's submission or better still come out straight.
djmakson:

The truth is some other persons will give same responses and get their visa. All in all, it takes the grace of God. Hard work should not be left out.

However, your denial may go beyond what you just wrote. It could be due to probable factors you might not have stated like you not being confident enough, didn't maintain eye contact, probably you stuttered while you gave the responses and couldn't make up a sentence due to you being nervous.

I feel for you bro. Just work on your lapses and refire. Quiters never win!

Congrats bigsteve,na God save you o that she gave you more mintues to actually give her what she wanted to hear about why you choose the school.
bigsteve00:
Visa approved at Lagos embassy earlier this week.
Firstly, I just want to thank God almighty, who made this possible. Work hard ,pray harder is the key. And I must say nairaland contributed immensely to my success. Even though, I was at the us embassy for the first time. Nothing was new to me from the security checks to the biometrics due to the fact that I read this thread from part 4 to 8 ( wasn't easy but worth it) . After waiting for about 25 mins the consular officers started arriving one after the other (in my mind, oyinbo sef sabi use African time chai) . I also noticed the lady at window 7 as @busysammy07 mentioned earlier, She was quite friendly and I also wish she interviewed me but I was directed to window 9 with 3 guys. While waiting for my interview, I noticed my friendly window 7 VO denied her first applicant . The first two guys at my front too were also denied and a girl at window 10 at my side. . In my mind I was like denial everywhere(today na today). But I didn't panic, instead I was thanking God in my mind and still maintained my confidence. The first question the VOs were asking was "why did you chose this school' and to be honest the first applicants before me answers were not impressive enough, I guess that majorly contributed to their denials. I wish I could link them up to this thread.
Sorry for my story here comes my transcript:
VO: Good morning, please pass me your documents (she was busy typing)
Me: Good morning (I didn't remember to smile lol )
VO: Why do you want to study in the united states?
Me: I want to study in the united states because of the good quality of education . And mental health counseling is not offered in any of the schools here both at undergraduate and post graduate level (looking straight into her eye, while she kept nodding)
VO: So why did you chose this school
Me: I chose the school, because it's one of the few schools that student irrespective of their majors belongs to a social intellectual community that builds that foundation for success ( actually, I didn't plan to mention this first but I was just nervous all of a sudden)
VO: Cut in...you mean that is why you chose the school ( frowning)
Me: oh (pretended as if I didn't understand the question earlier) I chose the school because it has a well structured curriculum that aligns to my career goals (I was still yet to balance)
VO: cuts in (still frowning) oh well others schools has a well structured curriculum
Me: I smiled (now I got my confidence back, devil is a liar)yea, the school is very affordable for my mother and it is located in a pretty safe town to study. It also has a faculty to student ratio of 16 : 1 which will enable me to have the personal attention i need from my lecturers to excel in my profession (now she stopped frowning)
VO: (looking at my I20) why mental health counseling?
Me: While working in a NGO. I realized how unfairly mentally ill people get treated and I think studying about mental health helps to remove that stigma. Our society needs a better understanding of mental health issues.
VO: Mental health issues like?
Me: Depression, anxiety, addiction and substance abuse, suicidal impulses, stress, problems with self-esteem, and grief. And, also job and career concerns, educational decisions, issues related to family, parenting, marital, or other relationship problems.
VO: what is the name of the NGO u work for?
ME: I mentioned it
VO: Where is it located?
ME: In oyo state
VO: How many people do u normally see in a day
ME: you mean staffs or clients? ( I know what she meant, but just trying to think)
VO: clients
ME: 4 to 6
VO: you have your degree in what? (didn't hear her well tho)
ME: Psychology
VO: Did you do any international exam like Gmaths?
ME: yes, I did GRE and TOEFL
VO: your scores?
ME: Gre 292 , Toefl 86
VO: what do you plan to do after the program?
ME: I plan to come back to Nigeria and change the mental health world, the discipline is behind in Nigeria. I would be helping people manage and live with health conditions such as HIV, cancer or chronic pain, assisting people who have difficulties in maintaining relationships or providing advice about how to care for a child who has been abused.
VO: (while I was still busy talking, she cuts in and said the golden words) She returned my I-20 saying I would be needing it at P.O.E plus the white sheet and blah blah.
ME: Thank you ( my expression was....just like that)
Once again, Glory be to the capital GOD. my advice to others expecting their visas. Put God first , Be well prepared and again put God first. No documents was asked for. Abeg ,Nigerians students in Mississippi kindly hook up. I need some infos.

The VO that denied him on his attempt on that day actually called my friend back when he was leaving hall and told him emphatically that he would like him to reapply.fortunately,he met the same VO but pushed him away to the next VO having recognised he denied him before and granted his visa.the next VO could have denied despite already granted but GOD showed up! Its indeed a double blessing.but I guess someone is scared to tap into this grace.lol
