But introduce Peter Obi's Anambra record and suddenly one English word requires accountants, economists, lawyers and possibly an interpreter.

Obi says: “I LEFT NO DEBT.” Then his defence increasingly becomes: “I DID NOT OWE CONTRACTORS FOR WORK DULY EXECUTED AND CERTIFIED.”

Ah. We have quietly travelled from DEBT to CERTIFIED CONTRACTOR PAYABLES. They are not synonyms.

PERHAPS WE NEED DEBT FOR BEGINNERS

Suppose CharlesCNG has ₦50 million in the bank but owes Zenith Bank ₦20 million. Do I have assets? Yes. Do I still have debt?
YES.

Can I call a press conference, display my ₦50 million balance and announce, “I OWE NOBODY”? Certainly. But Zenith Bank may interrupt the press conference. !!

Debt does not disappear because you have savings. Your assets cannot intimidate your liabilities into resignation. A millionaire with a mortgage is still a millionaire. He also still has a mortgage.
