I know someone names Obasi- but his whole name is Obasilekun- you are telling me that his name originated from Ibibio?
its not by force to claim everything it is what it is. If an American guy gets a DNA test and it comes back to being yoruba. Im not going to tell him to start learning yoruba or wear agbada LOL. Or if theres American chick who has a yoruba name Im not going to automatically think yea"she must have descended from yoruba".

Ive met enough people with Kwame name- to know that not every person who bears the name is from Ghana. Kwame kilpatrick ( Detroit mayor with sex scandal), Kwame brown( Nba player) ,
Very true, I dont even want them claiming Yoruba, it is an insult to the rest of us. But for excanny and his goons, I understand how they feel, with no real achievement and indigenous sophistication to point to, it is no surprise that they've resulted to claiming things alien to them in an attempt to continue to remain relevant .

Its just annoying as hell. You will never see Hausas and Yorubas claiming, it is Igbos desperate for acceptance that are always tryna claim.

PS: Try advocating for the  'break-up of Nigeria, you'd see my Igbo biatches tying to claim Edo too. Its in their blood.

You this fugus. I hope to get the right pesticide to deal with you.

And who told you that you dont claim people? What about the Edos you always try to claim, even when they tell you they are not Yorubas.

Do you even know the meaning of the word likely?
Now, if you have any ounce of self respect, you will prove your assertion.
If anything, it is Edos  that are trying to claim us and we have always, from the Ooni of Ife to the ordinary Yoruba on the street, tried to emphasize our differences. Go read Professor Ade Ajayi's book. Even here on NL, try reading Physics Post, get a tutor, preferably a native speaker because Physics syntax might just be too much for your Igbo brain,  careful analysis of posts on the relevant subject would impress it upon you that we do not like to claim people.

PS: That said, if claiming people into your already wretched ethnic group help you psychologically, by all means continue to do so

Your arguments are really flawed. Every shared word has an original source if you trace it well.

Ojo(definitely Yoruba origin)

Obasi(Ibibio origin)

Olorogun(likely of Yoruba origin from the way it's constructed. Many Yoruba words look like that. E.g olorioko, olowo, olomo, etc)
Dont bring Yoruba into this, we dont claim people

Olorogun is not Yoruba, Thank you!

I am here to stay.
I am a Nigerian and I have more stake in Nigeria that you will have have.

It is my country and you dont love it as much as I did

I grew up there and I had to explain the difference between Junior WAEC and WAEC to you.
I had to also explain a lot of other things about Nigeria to you.

Jenifa_:
I've had an opportunity to compare the two systems and anybody will tell you that we Nigerians are very complacent.
First of all , I live in the same Obodo-Oyinbo as you and I can tell you that Nigerians arent that different from Americans. When you begin to blather about complacency, would you be so kind to site specific examples in America and relate it to the Nigerian situation where the results were worse off in the Nigerian case because the people of Nigeria were complacent.

The government is corrupt because they get away with it easily. we allow them to be corrupt.
Again, what makes you think that the government is corrupt. Making accusations is not enough, talk is cheap after all, you have to be able to substantiate it. Provide evidence. Again, coming from a foreigner, from Latvia,, that is unfair and condescending. Just dating a Nigerian does not give you the liberty to insult our collective sensibilities.

Like Fela will say, we are shuffering and shmilling.
Same can be said of any other country in the West.

if you don't have any constructive comments to add, stay out of the thread.
I already put up a no trolling sign and i'm hoping moderators will take note.
You are the one trolling my dear. You go all around the forum expressing general ideas and trying to imperfectly apply it to unique situations/discussions where it doesnt fit, like a high school student trying to tell an unfamiliar story and in the process fudging and messing up.

How many states have you visited in Nigeria?

What states do you live in the US

When you say we, do you mean dual citizens?

What gives you the impression that the common man is complacent. . . isnt that outrightly condescending, especially coming from a foreigner whose only connection to Nigeria is her foreign born non-Yoruba speaking Yoruba BF?

WHat makes you think that Nigerians, compared to Americans, are passive citizens?

Additionally, the author Peter Ekeh is an Urhobo(maybe Isoko) man who was trying to be one-sided towards disclaiming an Igbo origin to the name. I'm sure if you ask him, he wouldn't even know that his own last name is still of Igbo origin.
I guess you forgot you said that. After trying to claim every claimable person, i am not surprised you are having problems keeping your story straight.

Here is a piece of advice for you, claim slowly, like 2 people per day, that way, you can keep you stories straight. grin

Yeah, I agree with fstranger. You're definitely not a Nigerian. Are you actually from Latvia, like he said?
Prior to the colonization of Northern Nigeria, 50% of the population in the Sokoto Caliphate were slaves (I can't speak for the Middle Belt, though, haven't studied them as much). Above that were non-slaves, above them were the mallams/clerics etc., above that were emirs, then the Waziri, and then the Sultan.
What kind of sophisticated organizational structure do you see there that places them above the Yorubas? Please enlighten me.
Hahaha
