OmoBendel24: A two week holiday is fine but a three month medical visit is another thing. It is not easy to accommodate a pregnant woman and, afterwards, a tiny infant. A lot of people have great hosts... however, many people end up having issues. Let me try to highlight some of the reasons 1. When you haven't done your homework and you expect the host to leave all they are doing to look for hospital for you. This can be very stressful for the host who have to work and live their lives. 2. When you are NOT independent. If you're staying with someone on your missionary journey make sure you figure out how to find your way around. 3. When you do not help around the house. If you're staying with someone try to help around the house but don't be in their face too much. Do some grocery shopping once a while, help clean up, babysit children... make your presence felt BUT also keep your distance such that you aren't too much in their faces. My childhood friend lives in the US and she told me hosting someone put a strain on her marriage. They had to do everything for the guest...take her to appointments, shopping, everything... then after baby came it wasn't funny at all cos they'd come home late from work and won't be able to get enough rest. It really drained her. For me, I decided not to stay with anyone and interestingly because the people I know in America know that I have an option, they are the ones now saying they'd have been happy to host me... I only let them know after I arrived! I did not want to be a burden to anyone at all so when I was planning I put all of that into consideration. I told DH, nobody sent us to do this so we shouldn't disturb or inconvenience anyone. Accommodation expense is huge... staying with someone eases that load so please if you have a place to stay just make sure you make an impact in their house such that they'd be sorry to see you leave. 36 Likes |

Ddoy2003: Hi... A couple of folks have given birth in Boston Massachusetts... I had no idea but when I saw your post I did a quick search using the very useful search button and voila!!! Please use the search button... limit it to the travel section... I used "Boston birth" to search and saw this (pic attached). You can send a message to the people concerned or just mention them here and see if they reply... Alternatively, do what many of us have done (how some of the info is gotten for this thread)... search for the hospitals in the area you are going, buy plenty recharge card for your phone and call them one by one to find out the cost for self paying uninsured patients. When you've found out biko come back and share. Thanks 7 Likes

Zocken: There are ways to do this... one person suggested getting someone in the US which is a brilliant idea... However if the person is NOT in the same state as your wife it may be a bit tricky. 1. Does your wife have a US acct? This way someone here can just pay in money for you to her acct and you credit the person's naira acct. 2. If she doesn't have a US acct... the person can send a money order to her and you credit the person in naira. 3. Do you have close person in the UK or another country that can send money gram to her and then you credit the person? However, if you don't have a trusted person it can be tricky and even trusted people sef can misbehave when it comes to money. If you don't have a trusted person, Do you have a domicilliary account? A dollar denominated one? If yes, 4. You can directly send money to your wife's US acct if she has one 5. You can fund the account AND then dhl the atm card to her (probably when you send the DS 3053 consent form) If you don't have a dorm account, 6. Open one and do No 4 or 5 whichever applies. Congrats again! 19 Likes 2 Shares |

Thanks so much for asking Justwise. I think the first page of part 4 was well written and very clear. However I have a few suggestions. 1. Maybe we should add this link showing the steps for getting a US passport for children less than 16years. https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/passports/under-16.html justwise: Also on the passport issue, people should know they can apply for it without the baby's SSN as this is also a recurring question (I'm not sure if this should be part of the front page) 2. I like that you mentioned the fact that this is a DIY thread (number 3)... Maybe we should Bolden that fact for emphasis because people just come and ask the questions they could have just searched out. Thanks JW and everyone who has contributed actively to this thread. 5 Likes |

chloe7: Lol... I don't think the name was mentioned at all in the movie... even in the books on Norse mythology she's almost always referred to in passing... her claim to fame is being Thor's biological mom. Shikena. I didn't expect anyone to remotely know what the name was... that was the point of picking it...lol 1 Like |

Well, he was the son of Odin (the big Norse god) and FYORGYN the earth goddess... That's where I got the name from... I used to be fascinated by all the ancients at a time in my life... 5 Likes |

Hello guys So as I dey wait for baby to land... I am watching a lot of TV. I came across this very interesting episode of US Border Security TV show. A Nigerian pregnant woman with her husband being interviewed by CBP officers in Michigan. In summary, the woman was NOT allowed into the US... The CBP officer said repeatedly (as we always say on this thread) that IT IS NOT ILLEGAL TO HAVE A BABY IN AMERICA you just need to show that you can afford it. Happy watching https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urEJDuY2qao 7 Likes |

ifedee: Yes, I do have a valid long term UK visa...and yes, I went into town as it was a looooong lay over and Virgin do not provide accommodation and all. However, I asked the UK border officer as he was stamping me in if he would have let me in without a visa. His answer was yes, he would let me in. He said that as long as you have a valid US Visa and a ticket showing your onward journey, it is at the discretion of the officer to let you go in without a UK visa. In other words, yes you can go in but it is at the discretion of the officer you meet. It's also on their website sef 3 Likes

So my missionary journey don start. Flew Virgin with stop over in London. I was not asked for fit to fly at all in Lagos, throughout the flight to London and on to LA. Had an overnight layover, passed through UK immigration without problem. There was quite a queue at lax poe... CBP officer scanned my passport and fingerprints. Then conversation started CBP Officer: are you here for business? (I think this was because my last visit was to attend a conference) Me: No. CBP Officer: what are you here for Me: to have my baby CBP Officer: why the US Me: better healthcare and citizenship CBP Officer: How much do you have Me: $12k in my bank cards... $70 in cash...(I didn't get travelex at the airport but if asked I had proof of funds in the cards) CBP Officer: stamps me in till April 2017 Me: is that all? CBP Officer: yes... you can go. Shikena... very easy. No stress at all. All my fit to fly, neatly arranged burden of proof... nothing was checked. Just to add... I don't know why but to shorten the queue they expedited the process for those that flew virgin. Three airlines arrived at the same time... qarta, virgin and another... one officer came and was like if you came with virgin atlantic come this way and they attended to us quickly. Wish everyone the best in their waka 27 Likes |

My people Biko quick question I'm filling the ds 160 for my mum to come join me in November. I'm still in naija but from the look of things I'd be in the US by her interview date. Please what should I use as her US contact. We have no relatives in the US and since I'm not a resident I don't think I can be her US contact. I've filled in the address of the place we will be staying (which I'm paying for) but not sure if I should put my name as US contact. Thanks. |
Travel / Re: Why I Never Considered To School In The UK by Fyorgyn: 7:19am On Sep 29, 2016 |
Interesting post. Different strokes for different people. My own reason for not wanting to study in the UK was that getting admission seemed too easy... it looked like once you had your money you could get into most of them. I loved the challenge of applying to US schools... even then I only considered the ivy leagues (lol... I can be very elitist) Guess where I ended? UK... I applied to 3 ivy league schools in the US but only one school in the UK.... Got into all of them but the UK school gave me an offer I couldn't refuse... a fully funded scholarship. So at the end of the day I ended up doing my masters in England and it was a fantastic experience... Wish you guys all the best in your endeavours |

Just spoke with Dr M office now... This sudden price change na wa oh. I had gotten the price for centinella earlier but I think that st Fs may still be cheaper on the long run. One advantage St f had for me is the no "surprise" charges... The C hospital offers 3k for VD sans cost of paediatrician, anaesthesiologist and tests... so one is not sure of the total bill Please can anyone who has used the C hospital tell us the total bill paid? Thanks |

Tickets are really going down. Just bought my LA ticket from Virgin for 480k+... will be traveling in October...The same ticket was about 700k+ two weeks ago and over 1m last month... Downside with Virgin though is that there is a long long layover in London (18hours or so going and 7hours coming). I don't mind the lay over- I prefer it sef as I have a UK visa and where to sleep and relax in London. It will also make the journey less stressful for Me. Hustle for PTA begins. God go bless our collective hustle. 2 Likes |

TripleKMama: I no be agent o... lol. I had looked through this thread for info on San Jose... so I decided to put up my findings for anyone who may be interested...now or in the future Usually, agents will only drop half info and expect you to contact them... I have put up the hospital name so anyone can Google it and call for themselves. I don't think this forum is against putting up valuable information... |

Nnystc: Amen!!! I'm coming behind you o. #TeamLA #October. Wish you the best also. The problem now is getting accommodation in a safe area. In other news, was able to get info for those interested in giving birth around Silicon Valley (after many weeks of searching and calling looking for affordable in an expensive area). Got through to El Camino hospital. For uninsured patients you have to pre register with the hospital. Normal Delivery: $6000 CS: $8500 If you don't pre register you're on your own...lol. bill for normal delivery is btw $44k to $70k+ and CS is $120k+ Doctor fee is $2000 The other hospitals I found are out of it abeg.. too expensive. 1 Like |

I've been a silent reader here before I got married sef... Thanks to everyone who contributes... I have also sent PMs to a couple of people and they have been gracious enough to respond. Really grateful for this forum. I got my visa September last year (posted my transcript on the USA visit visa thread) travelled for the purpose and returned (spent only one week). Now I don carry belle and will be due in November. Got a lot of info on this thread and it still beats me how people want to be spoon fed. I'm planning on going to LA as e be like say na there cheap pass. The only person close to family I have in the US stays in San Jose 6hours away and she's really worried about how I'd cope alone and as a FTM. Na im I start to find hospital for San Jose o... called more than 5 hospitals around the county but mehn their prices no be here. I even called one doctors office sef and them say na $7550 for Dokita but if you're self paying you get a 30% discount. Inglewood and Lynwood, the areas where Dr Ms office and the hospital are located are not safe areas... maybe that's why the services are affordable. May God help us in this our hustle. As for Dr Fagbohun I do know a couple of people (outside Nairaland)who have used him and they do think highly of him...but again like someone said earlier he's probably gotten greedy and is taking more than he can cope with. Thanks everyone for your contributions and everything. I'd definitely post my POE experience when the time comes. Have a great weekend 8 Likes 1 Share |

Babahoba: Documents are HARDLY ever checked. The VOs here on nairaland say this all the time. All you need is a genuine reason to visit the US, great ties (a good job/business and family) and maybe some travel history (people without travel history do get visas). Like Lady G said, do check the first page of this thread and read through the entire thread... you will find ALL the answers you need All the best! |

Sports / Re: Nigeria's Basketball Team Denied Visa By Spanish Embassy Ahead Of Tournament by Fyorgyn: 7:27pm On Jun 22, 2016 |
Getting a Spanish visa is not particularly easy- especially for women. A very good friend of mine who has great travel history applied for a visa to Spain (she was going to speak at a huge conference- all expense paid)... She has great travel history, attended ivy league schools abroad (Harvard and Oxford), has a great great job, married with 2 children in Nigeria. The Spanish embassy sent a mail to the conference organizers to verify she was legit, then called her to come over to the embassy (After verifying). When she got there she was given an undertaking to sign that she will return to Nigeria after the conference and come show herself physically at the embassy within 2 weeks of her return. Now this is for someone who is very legit, has a huge huge reputation and is very well traveled! I am definitely not surprised! 1 Like |

aodis: This hasn't happened to me with the UK but with another European Country. I missed their calls and couldn't get back to them... so I went ahead to send an email to the embassy and then they called back. For the UK... you can either email them (they respond within 24hours) or call them to explain your case. I called UKVI last week when I wanted to cancel my application. Go to https://ukvi-international.faq-help.com Select the country you're living in and you will see the email or call option. Have your GWF number ready and if you're calling, have your ATM card ready as well Hope this helps. |

Fyorgyn: Update Got my passport today with a 2-year visa stamped on it. I guess I was really lucky I didn't lose the money eventually... Lessons learnt: Apply early... if not, pay for priority or just go to Abuja... lol This is my first time applying in Lagos... before now, I always applied in Abuja and would get my passport in 3days without paying for priority. Have a great day Regards 1 Like |
