Investment / Oil Production To Boost Nigeria’s Economic Recovery By 0.8% by gabonsky: 9:24am On Apr 07, 2017
Nigeria’s crude oil production reached two million barrels per day in January and February. PHOTO: nta.ng

A significant increase in Nigeria’s crude oil production is expected to push economic recovery upward by 0.8 per cent this year, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) 2017 Article IV Consultation with Nigeria.

IMF in the report released yesterday, noted that with oil receipts dominating fiscal revenue and exports, the Nigerian economy was hit hard by low oil prices and falling production, adding that under unchanged policies, the outlook remains challenging.

According to the agency, growth would pick up only slightly to 0.8 per cent in 2017, mostly reflecting some recovery in oil production and a continuing strong performance in agriculture, but policy uncertainty, crowding out, and foreign exchange (FX) market distortions would be expected to drag activity.

Nigeria’s crude oil production reached two million barrels per day in January and February, but dropped to 1.6 million barrels per day in March, due to the Turnaround Maintenance at Bonga by Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo).

SNEPCO has since completed the repair and crude oil production is expected to increase from April 2017.

In terms of strategy, IMF said: “Accommodative monetary policy would keep inflation in double digits. Financing constraints and banks’ risk aversion would crowd out private sector credit and increase the Federal Government’s already high debt service burden.

“A continued policy of prioritizing exchange rate stability would lead to an increasingly overvalued exchange rate, leading to a deterioration in the non-oil trade balance and gross reserves below adequate levels,” it added.

But the Fund commended efforts already made by the authorities to reduce vulnerabilities and enhance resilience, including fuel prices, raising the monetary policy rate, and allowing the exchange rate to depreciate.

It equally recognised the recent easing of some exchange restrictions and urged the authorities to remove others including the multiple currency practices, thus unifying the foreign exchange market and helping regain investor confidence.

Such policies, IMF continued, should be supported by tighter monetary policy and fiscal consolidation to anchor inflation expectations and to limit the risk of exchange rate overshooting, as well as structural reforms to improve competitiveness.

In the light of the persisting internal and external challenges, it emphasised that stronger macroeconomic policies are urgently needed to rebuild confidence and foster an economic recovery, and stressed the need for a front-loaded, revenue-based fiscal consolidation starting in this year.

This, it said, will reduce the Government’s interest payments-to-revenue ratio to sustainable levels.

The IMF also advised that priority be given to increasing non-oil revenue, including raising Value Added Tax (VAT), and excise rates, strengthening compliance, and closing loopholes, and exemptions. “Administering an independent fuel price-setting mechanism to eliminate fuel subsidies, strengthening public financial management, and developing a well-targeted social safety net would also support the adjustment,” it added.

Furthermore, states and local governments were advised to contain the fiscal deficit through improved transparency and monitoring, while external adjustment is necessary to protect foreign currency buffers and reduce vulnerabilities.

It noted that ambitious structural reforms are key to achieving a competitive, investment-driven economy that is less dependent on oil. “Priority should be given to improving infrastructure, enhancing the business environment, improving access to financing for small enterprises, and strengthening governance and anti-corruption efforts. Timely and effective implementation of these measures would promote sustainable and inclusive growth,” it added.

IMF concluded by calling for improvement in the quality and availability of economic statistics, and encouraged further efforts to compile subnational fiscal accounts.

Politics / Sanusi Criticises Buhari’s Economic Framework by gabonsky: 12:20pm On Apr 06, 2017
The Emir of Kano and former governor of Nigeria’s central bank, Muhammadu Sanusi, Thursday described the country’s current economic model as impracticable, panning the government’s excessive spending on debt servicing.

Sanusi, a keynote speaker at the second edition of the Kaduna State Investment Summit, said the government erred by earmarking only 34 percent of its revenue for capital and recurrent expenditures.

He said: “The Federal Government of Nigeria is spending 66 percent of its revenues on interests on debts, which means only 34 percent of revenue is available for capital and recurrent expenditures.

“That model cannot work. If you look at the 2017 budget of the Federal Government, I sometimes wonder what Nigerian economists are doing? In the 2017 budget presented by the Federal Government, the amount earmarked for debt servicing is in excess of the entire non-oil revenue of the Federal Government, but that is not the problem. The problem is that it is a budget that is even going for more debts.”

Economic growth, Sanusi said, could only come from government’s investment in the economy. But he was downbeat on the possibility of the federal and state governments being able to grow the economy owing to unsustainable borrowing patterns.

“We have governors; they go to China and spend one month on a tour and what do they come back with, MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) on debts,” he continued.

“China will lend you $1.8bn to build light rail. This light rail will be done by the rail workers from China. The trains will come from China. The engines will come from China. The labour comes from China. The driver is Chinese.

“At the end of the day, what do you benefit from it? Your citizens will ride on a train and when you ride on a train, in northern Nigeria, in a state like Kano or Katsina, where are you going to? You are not going to an industrial estate to work. You are not going to school? You are not going to the farm.

You borrow money from China to invest in trains so that your citizens can ride on them and go for weddings and naming ceremonies.”

Foreign Affairs / ISIS Spokesman Insults Trump by gabonsky: 7:57am On Apr 05, 2017
An Islamic State group spokesman called on Tuesday for countries attacking it to be targeted, in an audio recording in which he also insulted US President Donald Trump.

The recording posted on jihadist sites online was Abulhassan al-Muhajer’s first since December.
Since then, IS has been under sustained assault in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul and also in Syria.

Muhajer said the “bankrupt” United States was run by “an ugly idiot who doesn’t know what Syria is, what Iraq is, and what Islam is”.

He said Washington should “apologise for the past and retreat” or face consequences, urging what he called “the caliphate’s soldiers” to attack “the criminal infidels”.

Iraqi forces have been engaged in a grinding battle for west Mosul since last month, prompting more than 200,000 civilians to flee the city.

The jihadists also face an offensive against their bastion Raqa in northern Syria conducted by a Kurdish and Arab coalition supported by the US-led coalition fighting the group.

IS has suffered heavy losses over the past two years in both countries.

Politics / N310 Million Was Never Stolen From Bukola Saraki’s House, Aide Insists by gabonsky: 6:46am On Apr 03, 2017
The Senate President, Bukola Saraki has described the allegations that the sum of N310 million stolen from a Bureau de Change operator in November 2015, by suspected operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and some army personnel as mischievous and is aimed at misleading the public.

Saraki, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Sanni Onogu, insisted that the DSS had issued a statement where it stated that it had arrested some of its men that partook in robbing a Bureau de Change operator in Abuja, adding that Saraki, has nothing to do with the said stolen money by suspected security agents then and even now as being maliciously peddled by some online media to tarnish his image.

According to him, when the incident was reported by the media in December 2015, the Senate president office debunked the report saying Saraki had nothing to do with the money allegedly stolen.

The statement reads: “The attention of the Media Office of the Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has been drawn to a rehash of mischievous and concocted allegations aimed at misleading the public with spurious claims that the Senate President allegedly owned the sum of N310 million said to have been stolen from a Bureau de Change operator in November 2015, by suspected operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and some army personnel.

“We still insist that he has nothing to do with the money and we challenge those still rehashing the stale and fake news to avail themselves of the reports of the police and the DSS on the matter to avoid misleading members of the public unnecessarily.

“Let me state that the Senate President has no army personnel among his security details. Therefore, it becomes absurd for one of the suspect in the robbery to have claimed according to the report that the money was brought to the Senate President’s house from where they connived to steal it.

“The report remains a lie which must be disregarded by the public, and should it be re-circulated tomorrow, it will still remain a lie. At best we count this unwarranted fake report as part of the April fool ritual. But the public deserves a better deal from its sponsors and purveyors.

“Besides, the content and intention of the fake is nothing but baseless allegations emanating from the infantile minds of unreasonable interlopers, hell bent on rubbing mud on the reputation of a distinguished Nigerian, who is today in his capacity as the Senate President, is working assiduously with critical stakeholders to stabilize and grow our economy. Enough is enough,” the statement noted.

Career / 10 Things NOT To Do When Starting A Blog by gabonsky: 9:50pm On Mar 28, 2017
There are lots of blogging tips out there on the interwebs, but few people talk about what NOT to do when starting a blog.

What NOT To Do When Starting a Blog | Createandgo.co

And there are some you MUST avoid (unless you’re looking to go nowhere fast…).

Having started multiple blogs that failed and two that have had great success, I feel that I can really help you with this.

By success, I mean generating at least $10k+ per month profit.

I specify profit, because someone’s revenues should never impress you. If you make 10k in revenues but spend 15k in advertising expenses, then you lost 5k!

Not good.

If you would like some proof (as you should be skeptical of ANYONE giving advice in this niche), you can check out our latest income report for blogging.

A lot of these things things are mistakes that we personally made!
.

What NOT To Do When Starting a Blog
1. Do NOT start in a niche you’re not passionate about.
If you try to force something in your writing, it’s going to show. Even worse than that, you will end up building a job for yourself…

Let me explain:
A long time ago, I tried to start a website called ptformom.com, which was all about fitness tips for mothers. It’s a great demographic that is highly profitable.

The problem? I am not passionate about fitness tips for moms.

Writing the first post was EXCRUCIATING, full of fluff, and crappy content nobody was going to get any real value from. That blog died off as quickly as it appeared, because I had no passion for it!
The good news?

Almost any passion you have can be monetized with the right blog and the right plan!
There are literally thousands of blogs out there making money in all sorts of crazy niches.

Selecting one is incredible easy: just choose something you enjoy talking about.

A blog is just like having a long conversation with people, so it should make sense that the things you enjoy talking about will be closely related to your passion.

2. Do NOT spend days perfecting your name and mission statement.
There are lots of really cleverly named blogs out there with great mission statements that never make a dime.

It’s true.

Just go on the hunt for a domain name, and you will find DOZENS of amazing blog names with websites that failed to make any money. We were guilty of this as well.

Healthandhappyhour.com always brought a smile to the faces of friends and family, but it never made us any real money.

We also don’t have a mission statement on our popular blog at Avocadu.com, and it makes well over 10k per month.

Why?
Because we know now that the content you create will do all the talking for you.

You can say your mission is about “creating a thriving community of the best content for dog owners,” but if you promote shady products, people will see right through you.

It also reminds me of one of my favorite quotes:

actions speak louder than words

You don’t need a flowery “about me” page to impact people. If you’re intention is to truly create awesomeness that the world wants and needs, people will see that.

3. Do NOT get started on a free blogging site.
Nothing is a bigger signal that you’re a rookie blogger than a domain like http://jennyblogshere.bloggersblogworld.com.

I can understand that starting a blog for “free” sounds sexy, but there are no free lunches in this life.
Companies like that need to make money somehow, and you will either spend the money now or later on when your website grows. More importantly, a free blog is…

• Unprofessional
• Sloppy
• Will make for a terrible first impression to new blog visitors
• Not owned by you, so it can disappear overnight (like if the company gets sold, for instance).
• A waste of time when you’ll need your own website down the road anyway (to make REAL money).

Which brings me to my next point on our list of what not to do when starting a blog…

Car Talk / Thorium Powered Vehicles – Could Run For 100 Years Without Refuelling! by gabonsky: 9:43pm On Mar 28, 2017
Thorium is nuclear fuel. A very interesting thing that makes nuclear power attractive – a million times more energy than conventional fuel. The Thorium, suitably tapped is very safe and a very clear source of power.

The idea of using nuclear power to fuel cars is just amazing. If your car was powered by thorium, you would never need to refuel it, because the thorium would last so long. It would probably outlive you.

A company called Laser Power Systems has created a concept for a thorium powered car engine.

Thorium is a naturally occurring radioactive chemical element, so the team uses bits of it to build a laserbeam that heats water, produces steam, and powers an energy-producing turbine.

The car powered by Thorium could run for 100 years on just 8 grams of fuel.

Check it out!

Family / ‘scared’ Father Of Bangladesh ‘tree Girl’ Ends Treatment by gabonsky: 8:32am On Mar 28, 2017
In this photograph taken on January 30, 2017, Bangladeshi patient Sahana Khatun, 10, poses for a photograph at the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.

A young Bangladeshi girl with bark-like warts growing on her face could be the first female ever afflicted by so-called “tree man syndrome”, doctors studying the rare condition said January 31.

Ten-year-old Sahana Khatun has the tell-tale gnarled growths sprouting from her chin, ear and nose, but doctors at Dhaka’s Medical College Hospital are still conducting tests to establish if she has the unusual skin disorder.

A young Bangladeshi girl diagnosed with a rare condition known as “tree man syndrome” has left hospital, her father told AFP Monday, saying he feared she would never be cured.

Surgeons operated on Sahana Khatun last month and removed some of the bark-like growths she has developed from the extremely rare condition of epidermodysplasia verruciformisa.

The 10-year-old is believed to be the first female in the world to suffer from the condition, also known as “tree man syndrome”, and was being treated for free by the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Doctors hailed the initial surgery as a success, but Sahana’s father Mohammad Shahjahan said it had only aggravated her condition and he wanted to spare her from further procedures.

“They removed the bark-like growths and they grew again more thick and strong,” he told AFP.
“I am scared. They said my daughter needed another 8-10 operations. But what’s the guarantee that she will be cured after that.”

Samanta Lal Sen, head of the hospital’s burns and plastic surgery unit, said he had wanted to keep the girl in hospital for further surgery but her father, a poor labourer, refused.

“He left with his daughter, complaining there was no progress. We asked them to stay a few more weeks for treatment,” Sen told AFP.

Fewer than half a dozen people are known to suffer from the syndrome, among them 27-year-old Bangladeshi rickshaw-puller Abul Bajandar.

He has undergone at least 21 surgical procedures to remove huge growths each weighing five kilos (11 pounds), and doctors believe he may be the first sufferer to be cured.

Sahana’s father, a widower, said he had also struggled financially during her treatment.

“I had to remain at her side without going to work. I didn’t have any money to feed her properly,” he said.

“She’s the only family I’ve got left and I don’t want to see her sadly sitting in a hospital bed.”

Crime / Three Feared Killed, Six Injured As Suspected Herdsmen Attack Delta Farmers by gabonsky: 8:24am On Mar 28, 2017
Three persons were feared killed while six others sustained injuries as a group suspected to be Fulani herdsmen attacked Emuhu community in Ika South local council of Delta State at the weekend .

The herdsmen were also reported to have taken over farmlands at Abavo community and clashed with farmers whenever they are challenged.Residents of Emuhu community yesterday protested against the incident, demanding state government’s urgent intervention to save them from frequent attacks by herdsmen.

A witness said the victims were attacked when they encountered the herdsmen on Sunday night. One of the victims, Chuks Okoyen said: “The herdsmen attacked us with daggers as we tried to defend ourselves. But when we saw guns with them we ran away, but three of us were injured and are at the point of death.”

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Zanna Ibrahim said six herdsmen have been arrested over the incident, adding that investigation was ongoing.Meanwhile, in what appears to be first of its kind in history, people of Fulani origin joined Christians in Southern Kaduna to worship on Sunday.

Christian faithful at Christ Evangelical Intercessory Fellowship Ministry at Sabon Tasha were afraid when they saw some Fulani among them. But the Assistant National Secretary of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Mallam Ibrahim Abdulahi doused the tension when he said the aim of their visit was to promote peace and unity among different religions.

According to him: “We visited the church today to interact with our brothers and sisters in Southern Kaduna. To let them know that the problem of insecurity in the region is also affecting the children of Nomads and their future. Therefore everyone must contribute to overcoming this challenge.”

Responding on behalf of the church, Pastor Yohanna Buru thanked the Fulani for promoting peace.“Your coming to our church today to worship with us does not make you a Christian, because I have been invited to many mosques to dialogue on peace and this is part of the peace mission in inter-faith activities,” he said.

And contrary to reports that armed herdsmen have been evacuated from Buruku, the legislator representing Buruku Federal Constituency in Benue State, Emmanuel Orker Jev said there is still tension in the area as many of the herders have moved to Mbayase, his village to graze their animals.

Jev, while speaking with journalists in Makurdi disclosed that 15 bodies of those killed and buried by herdsmen who attacked Buruku early this month, were discovered recently.

In another development, some people suspected to be Fulani herdsmen killed a young man at the mini prison at Jato Aka – Kashimbila road in Benue at the weekend. It was learnt that the victim and his mates went to take a bath at Mkomon, River Katsina Ala when he was shot in the head.

Health / 5 Reasons Why Farting Is Good For You! by gabonsky: 9:41pm On Mar 27, 2017
No use denying it: you fart.

Everyone does. And that’s actually a good thing.
This is not only normal, it’s healthy.
Gases build up in the colon as the result of undigested food. A healthy person farts an average of 20 times a day.

Gas production can increase due to poor digestion of certain foods, food sensitivity or intolerance (e.g., celiac disease, lactose intolerance), bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine, or the presence of some forms of bacteria in the digestive system that produce more gas than others.

Why It’s Good To Fart
No, you won’t explode if you don’t release pent-up gas but here are some valid reasons that you’re better off letting it fly.

1. Relieves Bloating
We all know what abdominal bloating feels like; it’s quite uncomfortable, making you feel like an over-inflated tire. Bloating can be caused by illness but is much more likely from something you ate (1).

Legumes like beans and lentils are musical fruits, indeed. Grains like wheat, rye, and barley can also make your digestive system work overtime, trapping gas and making you feel bloated and overly full. There’s no other real remedy for bloating than release through a good fart.

Increased discomfort occurs when you can’t get the gas out—try the wind relieving yoga pose to help your intestines to push it out.

2. Indicates Digestive Health
Gut bacteria are essential for health. When they become imbalanced or there aren’t enough of the good kind, food isn’t broken down properly or efficiently. By the time waste gets to your colon, it’s not been as thoroughly processed as it should be.

Beneficial bacteria in your body (and there are 100 trillion of them) break down food, help to eliminate metabolic waste, monitor and destroy harmful bacteria, and perform a host of other necessary activities. Having an ample supply is crucial for overall health; there is growing evidence that imbalance of gut bacteria can even affect the brain, leading to anxiety and depression (2).

If you fart around the average amount, it’s an indication that the micro-organisms in your lower digestive tract are working properly.

3. Flatulence and Diet
Farting can give you an idea on whether or not your diet suits your body.

If you don’t fart much, it may mean your gut bacteria aren’t getting necessary nourishment. They feed on complex carbohydrates. Eat more legumes (beans, lentils), whole grains, cruciferous vegetables (brussels sprouts, cabbage, bok choy, broccoli, cauliflower, etc.), and onions. That should do the trick.

Women tend to begin to toot more at or around menopause due to hormone changes. Add probiotics to your diet for balance. Fermented foods are the best source of probiotics: kefir, sauerkraut, kombucha, miso, and yogurt are prime examples.

Dark chocolate (cocoa content 70% minimum), apple cider vinegar, and ginger are also great supporters of the digestive system and are “prebiotics”: food for the probiotics.

4. S/he Who Smelt it Dealt it
How your farts smell says a lot about what’s going on inside your body. The air that exits your rectum is comprised of several different gases, none of which have an especially horrendous aroma.

If you find that your farts start to stink on a regular basis, it could be a sign of a food sensitivity/allergy (e.g., lactose or gluten) or an infection in the digestive tract (3). Or something as simple as eating too much garlic or meat.

Make incremental adjustments to your diet and pay attention to how the smell of your farts change.

5. Inhaling Farts is Good for You
Sounds paradoxical but one of the gaseous compounds abundant in your fragrant posterior expulsions is hydrogen sulfide. The sulfur part is what causes the rotten egg smell.

Research has found that sulfide gas in small doses may prevent cell damage. This may have applications in the prevention and treatment of arthritis, heart disease, and stroke (4).

The study doesn’t specify if it’s best to breathe in your own farts or someone else’s. How someone came up with the idea of a constructive use for flatulence is another issue entirely.

Good news for the farting public: most digestive gas is released while you sleep, when your sphincter is at rest. You can’t hold it in when you’re not aware you’re doing it. Sweet dreams.

Car Talk / Breaking News: 2019 Porsche 911 Imagined With Modern Design With Graphics by gabonsky: 11:16pm On Mar 26, 2017
Last month, a handful of 2019 Porsche 911 prototypes were spotted winter testing, providing us a glimpse at the updated model and its overhauled design.

While the sports car is still a couple of years away from launching, a number of distinctive styling elements have been consistently featured on prototypes and if, as expected, they remain for the production model, we could be on the verge of seeing one of the most comprehensively overhauled 911’s in recent memory.

To give us an idea of how the new 911 may look, Trazione Posteriore has created two nicely done renderings which appear to give us quite an accurate look at the 992 911.

Perhaps the most significant changes for the new generation will come at the rear. Brand new taillights can be expected alongside a prominent LED lightbar stretching the width of the car, inspired by the Mission E concept. Additionally, new exhausts, air vents and different engine covers are expected for the 911 family.

At the front, the next-gen 911 may get an available carbon splitter reminiscent of the Porsche 918 Spyder but will certainly retain its distinct round headlights. However, as with previous iterations, the lights may be slightly tweaked in shape and will inevitably adopt different inners and daytime running lights.

We expect to see the new Porsche 911 hit the market in 2019 and be followed up by a plug-in hybrid version the following year.

Do cockroaches really worry you in your kitchen? Do they take a dip in your cooking oil or are present in the sugar jars and the food you cook? Certainly yes, roaches create a mess in the kitchen and everything looks so untidy and ugly. Do you know how to get rid of cockroaches?

Sometimes you just feel irritated seeing this tiny creature moving here and there in the kitchen. It is frustrating to feel that these small creatures will be the owner of your kitchen one day. Although it sounds funny, it is the case in most kitchens. They are everywhere on the induction cookers, gas stoves, kitchen sinks etc.

Causes for Cockroaches Infestation
How to Get Rid of Cockroaches?

There can be several reasons for roach infestation in your kitchen. The major ones include:

Very poor domestic hygiene which allows them to breed in your kitchen.
Uncovered food, oil etc. which gives roaches to attack your food.
The ideal condition for breeding.
No pest control measures which allows them to infest the kitchen.
They breed very quickly and under minimum environment conditions.

Education / Corruption 101 At Roadside University by gabonsky: 12:30pm On Mar 26, 2017
What is corruption? What is the history of corruption?

Why has corruption become so visible?

What are the political, economic, moral and social functions of corruption?

And why do Indian voters prefer politicians with criminal records to those who are clean and without corruption?

And why all these questions?

The reason for all these questions is that every Nigerian is temporarily out of prison! Almost everybody can be found to be in violation of some law or another at any point in time. At least the police at roadblocks only need to look at you and your car before they make up your offence for which you must pay them a bribe.

Why these questions? The reason is that what we give as gift is now seen as bribe and so corrupt. But who gives someone nine point seven million dollars and seventy-four thousand pounds as gifts to one man? And the man goes to hide these wonderful cash gifts in a guest house at the edge of a high density location at the edge of the city? If gift-giving is mutual, what did this man give in return?

Why these questions are because we do not know what is corruption but we declare that what we are doing is not corruption.

Is it corruption when government cannot supply the most basic needs of a people they have sworn to serve, and the people find informal ways to get what they need. Is it corruption? When government outsources its responsibilities to its own private companies and they still do not provide the goods and services, is it corruption on the side of the people? Some of the definitions we need to teach at one hundred level says that using official positions for private profit is corruption. Does that exclude ordinary people, who hold no official or government position, cannot be corrupt?

Almost twenty years after the momentous event of the election of Nelson Mandela as president of The Republic of South Africa, we hear, on the playground of a girls’ secondary school in Johannesburg the following mangling of the first lines of the national anthem (some call it item!):

“Nkosi sikelel’ iAfrika.

Mandela promised me a brand new car.

Is it a Ferrari? Let’s find out.

Oopsie, it’s a taxi,

Voetsek,“I want my ballot back!” (* bad swear word in Afrikaans, the language they protested against in 1976!)

What do you do with you ballot when the politician does not fulfil his promises? Do you accept as the Bulgarian politician would ask you to do saying: It is divine to make promises but it is human to break promises! What do you do with your ballot when the now voted in politician says God brought him or her to the position of power and nothing to do with you and your ballot. What do you do?

Give your ballot away as a gift? Get a bribe before giving your ballot away? And wait for another four years before the next voting?

Of course corruption have always existed. It was there but it did excite academic attention. Small acts of pilfering, cornering some advantage that did not hurt others, nothing you cannot chuckle about and go on with your life. But, as if suddenly, corruption became big news. Transparency International appeared, created by former executives of the World Bank and the IMF. Then the government of the USA started passing laws against bribery and corruption among American companies trading overseas. And OECD countries made corruption an exception to playing with any country.
Why was this so?

This was because of three Ends and five Rises. First the Ends. There was the end of the Cold War, a period of western political hypocrisy when the western countries backed corrupt leaders all over the world as long as they were doing the bid of the United States and Western Europe. There was the end of ideological confrontation between communist capitalism and democratic capitalism, a challenge to democracy. And there was the end of real socialism in Eastern Europe replaced by gangster capitalism.

Along with these Ends came five rises. There was the rise of the new media and a global information environment along with investigative journalism. There was the rise of democracy and periodic electoral competition for peoples’ votes. Exposing opponents’ corruption was good for the competition. There was the rise of the global market and the demand for a level playing field where bribing would not get you the contract, must not get you the contract. There was the rise of civil society and the commitment of NGOs which argued that corruption was not just the problem of the corrupted country but also that of the corrupting countries and companies. Finally there was the rise of organised crime which is structurally connected to corruption.

Let’s go back to Transparency International and the Indian voters’ preference for not just corrupt but criminal politicians. Transparency International was interested in building a broad coalition against general corruption, not deal with concrete cases of corruption. It’s national chapters brought together the names of the heroes of local corruption scandals and these chapters never work with local anticorruption activists.

In a book entitled WHEN CRIME PAYS: Money and Muscle in Indian Politics by Milan Vaishnav the first chapter talks of Lawmakers and Lawbreakers: The Puzzle of Indian Democracy. We know that India is the largest democracy on earth. It’s elections going on for three months over mountain snow and verdant forests, crossing rivers and visiting remote hamlets. The election of 2014 “was the largest democratic exercise ever undertaken.” 554 million voters queuing in 900,000 polling stations to vote for 8,251 candidates representing 464 political parties. The election voted out the Indian National Congress and brought in the Hindu Nationalist party for a good governance. Yet, one third of the members of the new parliament were facing ongoing criminal prosecution deserving of jail or a death sentence if found guilty. The writer concludes, with detailed information, that voters have concluded that if governments cannot provide goods and services, tough criminal guys in parliament can do it. How has democracy come to nestle next to corruption and criminality? So many questions!

Politics / Redemption Songs For Buhari’s Presidency by gabonsky: 9:36am On Mar 26, 2017
In an ancient political plot captured by Shakespeare in his classic, Julius Caesar, a minor character, Artemidorus, prepares what he calls a caveat for Caesar. He reads the warning aloud that he (Caesar) may escape an evil plot by his friends and members of his ‘inner circle’.(Reading aloud from the letter)Artemidorus warns in clear terms:

“Caesar, beware of Brutus. Watch Cassius. Don’t go near Casca. Keep an eye on Cinna. Don’t trust Trebonius. Pay attention to Metellus Cimber. Decius Brutus doesn’t love you.

You’ve wronged Caius Ligarius. These men all have one intention, and it’s directed against Caesar. If you aren’t immortal, watch those around you. A sense of security opens the door to conspiracy. I pray that the mighty gods defend you!

Your friend,

Artemidorus.”

To ensure that Caesar gets his message this is the strategy of Caesar’s friend:
“I’ll stand here until Caesar passes by, and I’ll give him this as though it’s a petition. My heart regrets that good men aren’t safe from the bite of jealous rivals. If you read this, Caesar, you might live. If not, the Fates are on the side of the traitors….”

There is a sense in which we can say that Shakespeare, the seer for many dispensations, wrote these lines for President Muhammadu Buhari now in the eye of the storm created by his own men. Clearly, the only difference inside Aso Villa setting is that there is yet no Artemidorus, a friend who can genuinely stand between the Council Chambers and the road leading to the other room to warn the good man but naïve Caesar (President Buhari) to beware of the dangerous cabal members who are bent on foisting their “unenlightened self interest” on the nation. This is the time an Artemidorus needs to tell our own Caesar.

“PMB, lend me your ears. Beware of Mammah. Watch Abba. Don’t go near Mallamy. Keep an eye on Lawal. Don’t trust David. Pay attention to Bukky. Amaychy doesn’t love you. You’ve wronged Bola. These men all have one intention, and it’s directed against PMB. If you aren’t immortal, watch those around you. A sense of security opens the door to conspiracy. I pray that the mighty gods defend you!”

It is a pity, no one can keep vigil like this Caesar’s restless friend to say to PMB when the cock crows at dawn that, “my heart regrets that good men aren’t safe from the bite of jealous rivals, after all”.

It is so easy for some angry commentators and critics of the Senate to be castigating the Upper House for the plight and frustration of the president over failure to get Ibrahim Magu cleared as Chairman of the anticorruption body, the EFCC. It is also convenient to use the data of those being tried for corruption in the Senate as basis for casting aspersion on the Senate over Magu. But how do we contextualize the presidency that is apparently divided against itself on the messy Magu affair? How do we blame the Senate for the president’s failure to disarm the ‘gunmen’ in the palace who have always succeeded in shooting down his preferred candidate for the EFCC top job? How did he allow that affliction to occur a second time? The question we (the) bloody outsiders cannot answer till eternity is this? Is it possible for the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS) to submit two damaging reports on Magu to the Senate without the consent and knowledge of the National Security Adviser, not to talk of the President? Besides, Acting President Yemi Osinbajo it was who submitted the name of the EFCC Acting boss to the Senate two times. And so, it is relevant to ask if the DSS also bypassed him before submitting a damning report to the Senate in the first instance. It is also so easy to condemn a cabal or the president’s men for the tragic failure to get Magu cleared. But is there any way the cabal can work without the consent of the principal it exists for?

More questions: As the earth remains, most people will continue to ask questions about what has become PMB’s parochial appointment. Is there a sense in which we can blame only the president’s men or cabal for the nominations and approval of all the presidential appointments so far? Has the president who has the mandate of the people too been an innocent bystander in the politics of appointments? Is it not an insult of monumental proportion on the office of the president if we claim the man we popularly elected in 2015 has lost control of his presidency and even his household? Can we ask if the ‘gunmen’ inside Aso Rock have been wielding their guns without the knowledge of the commander-in-chief of the armed forces?

Is PMB’s integrity overrated?

This is the next jigsaw puzzle that the nation may have to face from the terrible reverses that the anti-corruption war suffered last week when the DSS big man who also hails from Daura, did a ‘good job’ of urgent national importance when he overruled the president over his choice of Chairman of the EFCC. And it came to pass that for the second time, the man the president trusted in 2015 to be the central intelligence agency chieftain could not trust the president’s judgment over this critical assignment. The president, a General from Daura who was not advised to replace the current chief of staff (CoS-P) and even the secretary to the government of the federation, (SGF) among others, was over-powered by a stronger Daura man over Magu? Come to think of it, the two men the president has relied upon to deliver Nigeria from corruption reproach, Magu, an Assistant Commissioner of police and retired Col Hamid Ali, Comptroller-General of Customs have just been humiliated by a Senate headed and dominated by the ruling APC.

Mr. President should note that inaction from the seat of power over the humiliation of two of his brand ambassadors – Magu and Ali – by the principalities and powers at the Senate is beginning to change people’s perception of his integrity and capacity as a leader. Management of this assault on the presidency is a huge challenge that will determine the future of the Buhari brand equity. Virtue is lost a little at a time, by degrees. In his classic, 7 habits of highly effective people, Professor Stephen Covey counsels managers and leaders in this kind of dilemma: “You have to decide what your highest priorities are and have the courage – pleasantly, smilingly, unapologetically – to say “no” to other things. And the way you do that is by having a bigger “yes” burning inside”. As people are still debating whether the integrity of the president has been massively overrated, he should listen to redemption song to save his presidency. This week, some of the most serious editorials and credible opinion leaders are saying in lucid terms: overhaul your security and intelligence apparatus. As it is regularly suggested here, the president should say “no” to the reactionary voices inside Aso Villa and restructure the presidential bureaucracy that allowed him to goof so badly when he mysteriously delayed sending Magu’s name to the Senate for confirmation. After all, Magu was picked to act since November 2015. No one remembered to send his Magu’s name until July last year while the president was away and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was acting. The Senate sat on it and the spirit of presidential procrastination moved in until last December when the DSS submitted a mangled but deadly report on the same Magu.

The same cycle was completed last week. An organized presidential bureaucracy would have taken care of these missteps. There is nothing new here; former President Olusegun Obasanjo also faced monumental adversarial posture of the Senate in his time. Elder Joseph Ajiboye’s nomination was rejected twice as Auditor-General of the Federation. And so was Onyema Ugochukwu nominated as NDDC Chairman. Professor Babalola Aborisade too was rejected twice as a ministerial nominee. But the presidential bureaucracy then did not accuse Senate members of corruption for rejecting these nominees. Rather the presidential bureaucracy led by Obong Joseph Ekaette, the then Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the ruling party operatives got cracking and did some lobbying and they were confirmed. That was what also happened when the Senate invoked its powers under the constitution and revoked the clearance of Malam Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai as FCT Minister when the minister had just a Freudian slip in a contextual interview that, “silence is the best answer to a fool”. It will be recalled that President Obasanjo publicly apologized to the Senate and sent emissaries to lobby them to temper justice with mercy. The Senate then was not filled with saints: at least two Senate Presidents, Evan(s) Enwerem and Professor Chuba Okadigbo were removed on charges that had to do with impurities. So, there are lessons to be learnt from this same republic.

The president should take charge of his bureaucracy, his kitchen cabinet, challenge the governing party (APC) leadership to wake up. It is shameful that the APC leaders dozed off when Magu and Ali were suffering indignities in the hands of their members at the Senate. Same for the National Assembly leadership. They should also learn from ‘the old time religion’ of sanctifying their rank and chambers when corruption charges appear as albatross on the necks of their leaders and members.

Covey says people instructively trust those whose personality is founded upon correct principles.

People will not trust most of the leaders and members of this National Assembly because the number of times they are associated with corruption stories is increasing every day. They need to deal with that burden and reproach that continue to ruin their brand equity too. They need to manage that reputation before their acts can be respected too. And “therefore” the president should note the central idea in this note that there is a perception of character crisis in his presidency. Besides, as ‘project 2019’ has begun in earnest, the president should take back his presidency, lest the ‘gunmen’ around him who will continue to claim to be reading his body language continue to gun down even good men that they may consider as impediments to a second term bid. That is how Abuja works and why it does not work. Many associations for “Project 2019” will spring up soon and most of them will continue to blow all sorts of whistles on possible candidates and challengers. That is what has happened to the governor of Kaduna State Mallam Nasir el-Rufai who is being portrayed in a section of the media as disrespectful to the president for writing a memo on how PMB can finish strong.

Most of the ‘gunmen’ and their henchmen are harping on their context that el-Rufai has publicly criticized the president. It has been confirmed that some of the president’s men leaked the memo to call the dog a bad name to justify hanging. So, there is a part of the lyrics of Redemption Song from legendary Bob Marley that the president can learn from: And here is the part: …How long shall they kill our prophets while we stand aside and look? So, Mr. President, if you do nothing about the ‘gunmen’ in your midst, some call ‘the cabal’, they will kill all your prophets while you stand aside and look, So, let there be ‘songs of freedom’ sooner than later, lest we run away with an impression that your integrity may have been massively overrated, after all.

Foreign Affairs / Two Charged Over Arms Supply To French Airport Attacker by gabonsky: 12:38pm On Mar 25, 2017
Police officers investigate at the house of the suspect of an attack at the Paris Orly’s airport, on March 18, 2017 in Garges-les-Gonesse.

A man who had been investigated for links to radical Islam was shot dead at Orly airport south of Paris on today after attacking a soldier on patrol and trying to grab her rifle.

The same man is suspected of having shot at police earlier in the day, leaving an officer with minor wounds after being pulled over while driving in a suburb north of the French capital.

French anti-terrorism judges have charged two men suspected of involvement in supplying a weapon to the gunman killed at Paris’s Orly airport after attacking soldiers, a judicial source said Saturday.

The suspects, aged 30 and 43, were charged Friday for “association with terrorist criminals” over the March 18 attack and are being held in custody, the source said.

The younger one was also charged with arms possession related to a terror plot. They are both from the Paris area and lived close to the assailant, Ziyed Ben Belgacem, according to a preliminary investigation.

Ben Belgacem, 39, was under the influence of drugs and alcohol when he attacked the capital’s second busiest airport, according to judicial sources.

Ben Belgacem, born in France to Tunisian parents, grabbed a soldier on patrol at Orly’s southern terminal and put a gun to her head and seized her rifle, saying he wanted to “die for Allah”.

His father insisted his son — who had spent time in prison for armed robbery and drug-dealing — was not a extremist.

He had, however, been investigated in 2015 over suspicions he had been radicalised while serving jail time, but his name did not feature on the list of those thought to pose a high risk.

The attack at Orly came with France still on high alert following a wave of jihadist attacks that have claimed more than 230 lives in two years.

The violence has made security a key issue in France’s two-round presidential election on April 23 and May 7.

Soldiers guarding key sites have been targeted in four attacks in the past two years but escaped with only minor injuries.

In mid-February, a machete-wielding Egyptian man attacked a soldier outside Paris’s Louvre museum, injuring him slightly, before being shot and wounded.
