A New “Tube Transport” System Could Get You From New York to Beijing in 2 Hours

“ET3: we call it a mag-lev limo, where it’s a car-sized vehicle that operates in a network of tubes much [like] cars on a freeway,” Oster toldTechRepublic at the 2017 Smart Cincy Summit. “But, it would be international and global in scope.”

“Our vision is being able to travel from, say, here in Cincinnati to the Taj Mahal in under three hours for 50 bucks,” Oster added. Essentially, it’s a network of tubes that serve as a “freeway” which can be accessed via various points along its many routes...

Food / Unbelievable Health Benefits Of Cornmeal! by gabonsky: 9:37am On May 09, 2017
Cornmeal is the flour made from dried corn. After the wheat crop failed in many countries people switched over to using cornmeal as a substitute. It can be used to make breakfast, lunch, dinner and in between dishes. Since it is whole grain there are a number of health benefits of cornmeal. It is a common pantry item and used in making a number of baked dishes too.

Health Benefits of Cornmeal
Properties of Cornmeal

It is a complex carbohydrate grain. It contains good carbohydrates with fiber and a number of nutrients. Every 100 grams of cornmeal contains 7 grams of fiber and less than 1 gram of sugar. Hence it is ideal to use for people who want to lose weight.

It is totally gluten free. Hence it can be used by people who have wheat allergies or the celiac disease. When these people consume wheat they end up with abdominal discomfort, pain and diarrhea. Such people can safely consume cornmeal since it can be used in the place of wheat.

The nutrient dense cornmeal contains good amounts of vitamins and minerals. 100 grams of cornmeal contains 10 grams of proteins which consists of 18 essential amino acids. It also contains 127mg of magnesium and 241 mg of phosphorous. It also contains 287 mg of potassium, thiamin, vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin B-6, vitamin K, folate, niacin and choline. It also has 5.88 grams of fat content. The whole thing amounts to about 384 kilocalories.

Some of the health benefits of cornmeal are listed below.

Health Benefits of Cornmeal
1. Provides for Good Skin and Vision
Beta carotene present in cornmeal gets converted to vitamin A in the body. Vitamin A is necessary for healthy skin, hair and strengthening of immune system. Beta carotene also acts as antioxidant. This helps in reduction of oxidative stress in the body thereby protecting against heart diseases and cancer.

2. Health Benefits of Cornmeal for Digestion
Since cornmeal contains a good amount of fiber it alleviates symptoms of constipation. Thus diseases such as colorectal cancers and hemorrhoids are kept at bay. It also helps in reduction of colon related disorders. It maintains good digestive health since it is whole grain. It allows for easy bowel and peristaltic movements.

3. Provides for Healthy Vitamins
Vitamin B elements, that is thiamin and niacin is important for maintaining proper cognitive functions in the body. Cornmeal contains these elements. Insufficient vitamin B diets cause nervous diseases in the body. Cornmeal also contains panthothenic acid. This vitamin aids in synthesis of proteins, fats and carbohydrates in the body. Cornmeal is also a good source of vitamin E which is required for healthy hair and skin.

4. Aids in Reduction of LDL Cholesterol
As per studies cornmeal consumption helps in reduction of LDL cholesterol levels in the body. This is achieved since cornmeal inhibits absorption of cholesterol in the body.

5. Prevention of Anemia
It is noted that when the body has insufficient iron it could result in anemia or weakness in the body. Cornmeal contains a good amount of iron to ensure red blood cells are produced in normal numbers keeping anemia at bay.

6. Health Benefits of Cornmeal Protects the Heart
Consuming corn kernels or cornmeal is supposed to be beneficial for the heart. It contains anti atherogenic properties which aids in maintaining cholesterol levels and hence reduces risks of heart diseases. It contains the healthy omega 3 fatty acids which strip away the bad cholesterol from the heart. Hence the chances of the heart getting clogged are reduced. This helps in stopping heart attacks and strokes.

7. Controls Diabetes Type 2
Corn is lower in GI and since it is whole grain it gives a feeling of full stomach and blood sugar rises slowly. Thus you will end up eating less food when you eat a corn meal. This would surely help in controlling blood sugar levels. Thus cornmeal can be easily used in the management of diabetes. The phytochemicals present in the corn helps to avoid the spikes in blood sugar levels. The phytochemicals help in release and absorption of insulin in the body.

8. Controls Hypertension
Since corn consists of phenolic phyto chemicals blood pressure is maintained in the body. Chances of hypertension are reduced and overall heart health is maintained.

9. To Exfoliate The Skin
Cornmeal helps in removal of dead skin cells and dirt. It aids in unplugging of skin pores and cleaning up in skin treatments. In turn it leaves the skin smooth and soft. It is also a very cheap option to go in for. It could be used on the skin weekly and it is found to be safe too.

10. For Weight Watchers
Since corn consists of resistant starch it does not get digested easily. It resists digestion and hence passes from small intestine to large intestine almost in the same shape. It ferments in the large intestine and produces a fatty acid. This acid gets rid of toxins and digestive diseases. It gives a feeling of fullness and hence weight watchers will end up eating less food.

11. Corn as Food
Cornmeal is eaten as a staple food by some people. It is eaten in the form of burritos, polenta or tortillas. For some it could be just snacks like in popcorn or chips. A number of bakery items like muffins and cakes can also be made with cornmeal.

Cooking cornmeal with low-fat milk and honey turns it into a healthy porridge for breakfast. Polenta is made by cooking cornmeal with water, salt and pepper. This is typically eaten as a complementary dish to chicken, meat or any vegetarian dish.

How to Buy The Best Corn?
Though the best-known corn is the yellow variety, it comes in different colors. Corn comes in pink, red, black, blue or purple. Depending upon the color, the nutrient content varies. The antioxidants and the combination of phytonutrients in the corn determine its color. The yellow corn is supposed to contain the antioxidant carotenoids. This consists of lutein and zeaxanthin. The blue corn consists of anthocyanins while the purple variety contains hydroxybenzoic acid.

It is the whole grain cornmeal which would retain all the nutrition. Hence while buying corn look for labels “whole grain”. The steel ground ones are stripped of nutrition and in turn enriched with thiamin, riboflavin, niacin and iron.

Cornmeal comes as 3 types depending upon the grinding – coarse, medium and fine. The coarse variety is used to make polenta and porridges. The medium flour is used in baking and thickening of soups. The fine variety can be used in baking dishes. Masa harina is ground dried corn soaked in lime water. It is used to make tortillas, tamales and corn chips.

Whole grain corn can be stored by keeping it in the refrigerator. Otherwise cornmeal powder has a shelf life of about a year.

Putting it in a nutshell cornmeal has the following benefits.

It is used in beauty treatments as an exfoliator for the skin and hair.
Since it contains a lot of fiber it gives a feeling of fullness and gets rid of constipation problems. Hence it is commonly used by weight watchers.
It contains a number of vitamins and minerals which are needed by the body on a daily basis.
It is good in controlling diabetes and hypertension.
It is cheap and easily available.
It has some heart-protecting properties.

Science/Technology / Vcs Put $110 Million Into Grammar-checking Software by gabonsky: 9:27am On May 09, 2017
Venture capitalists want a piece of just about anything involving artificial intelligence, whether it’s computers learning to drive or helping people shop for clothing. The latest to get a sizable investment is a startup looking to use AI to improve people’s grammar.

General Catalyst, a Silicon Valley venture firm, said Monday that it led a $110 million investment in Grammarly Inc. The San Francisco startup makes software that underlines awkward words and phrases in the user’s writing and makes suggestions, similar to a feature in Microsoft Word.

Grammarly promises to do more than fix spelling and syntax. It said the software tailors the tone and word choice of personal or professional writing for the 6.9 million people using the tool daily, many of whom interact with the service through a web browser extension for Google Chrome.

America’s startup market has come back to life after a lull in recent months. The Bloomberg U.S. Startups Barometer, an index of fundraising and other private market deal-making, is up 6 percent from a year ago.

Grammarly’s funding round is among the largest initial investments for a technology startup recently. The founders of Grammarly had eschewed venture capital since setting up the company in 2009. Grammarly said its business is profitable. In addition to General Catalyst, investors in the round include Breyer Capital, IVP, SignalFire and Spark Capital.

Car Talk / Rare Lamborghini Sesto Elemento With Delivery Mileage Will Cost You $2.6 Millio by gabonsky: 4:58pm On May 08, 2017
You'll have to book a hotel room in Dubai to see this Lamborghini Sesto Elemento in person, and have €2.4 million ($2.6 million) lying around to take it home.

But it could be worth it for some, considering that despite turning 6 this year, this example comes with the delivery mileage, as the seller, which posted the ad on JamesEdition, claims.

Add the fact that the Raging Bull only made 20 of these, and that the last one that changed hands at auction brought €3 million ($3.3 million) to the vendor, and it could turn out to be a good investment, just like other Lamborghini special supercars that came out in a very limited number.

Despite being based on the defunct Gallardo, which was replaced by the Huracan, the Lamborghini Sesto Elemento tips the scales at just 999kg (2,202lbs). It uses the familiar 5.2-liter naturally aspirated V10 mill that sends 570PS (562hp) to the permanent all-wheel drive, thus allowing it to hit 100km/h (62mph) in just 2.5 seconds.

Crime / Boko Haram Attack In Chad Kills Nine Troops, 40 Jihadists: Sources by gabonsky: 9:04pm On May 05, 2017
Some 40 Boko Haram jihadists were also killed as the army responded to the attack on the Kaiga post, sources said on condition of anonymity. A military official confirmed the attack without giving a toll.

Nine Chadian soldiers were killed in a Boko Haram attack on an army post in the Lake Chad region on Friday, local and security sources told AFP.

Some 40 Boko Haram jihadists were also killed as the army responded to the attack on the Kaiga post, sources said on condition of anonymity. A military official confirmed the attack without giving a toll.

“Very early this morning, Boko Haram fighters attacked the Chadian army’s position in Kaiga on Lake Chad. They were pushed back,” Chadian army spokesman Colonel Azem said in a statement.

Surrounded by Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger, Lake Chad has been the site of frequent Boko Haram attacks. Chad’s army is based on the north bank, where four Chadian soldiers and several jihadist fighters were killed in skirmishes in late September.

Over the past two years, the jihadists have been chased out of most territories where they founded a hardline Islamic state in 2014. But despite being weakened, they continue to fight army forces and launch suicide attacks.

The conflict has lasted for eight years, killing more than 20,000 people and displacing 2.6 million, devastating the region where millions of people depend on humanitarian assistance.

Science/Technology / Facebook Adding 3,000 People To Screen Out Violent Content by gabonsky: 7:18pm On May 04, 2017
Facebook said on May 3, 2017, it would add 3,000 people to screen out violent content as the social media giant faces scrutiny for a series of killings and suicides broadcast on its platform.

“If we’re going to build a safe community, we need to respond quickly,” chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said on his Facebook page. SUSANA BATES / AFP

Facebook said Wednesday it is hiring an extra 3,000 staff to remove violent content like the gruesome killings and suicides broadcast on its video platform.

The move ramps up efforts by Facebook to filter content amid growing criticism of the social media giant for allowing the platform to be used to promote violence and hateful activity.

“If we’re going to build a safe community, we need to respond quickly,” chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said on his Facebook page.

Zuckerberg’s announcement came a week after a 20-year-old Thai man broadcast live video on the world’s most popular social media platform, showing him killing his baby daughter before committing suicide.

The previous week, a US man dubbed the “Facebook Killer” shot himself to death after three days of a frantic nationwide manhunt.

The murder and a video sparked outrage across the world and renewed scrutiny of the growing number of grisly videos being posted on social media.

Facebook removed the footage hours after the attack. Zuckerberg acknowledged that the world’s largest social network had a role to play in stemming the worrisome trend.

“We’re working to make these videos easier to report so we can take the right action sooner — whether that’s responding quickly when someone needs help or taking a post down,” Zuckerberg said.

The 3,000 new recruits, added over the coming year, will increase by two thirds the size of Facebook’s community operations team, which currently numbers 4,500.

– ‘We can do better’ –
“We’ve seen people hurting themselves and others on Facebook — either live or in video posted later,” Zuckerberg said. “It’s heartbreaking, and I’ve been reflecting on how we can do better for our community.”

The additional reviewers will “help us get better at removing things we don’t allow on Facebook like hate speech and child exploitation,” he said.

“And we’ll keep working with local community groups and law enforcement who are in the best position to help someone if they need it — either because they’re about to harm themselves, or because they’re in danger from someone else.”

Critics say the social network has been too slow to react to online violence, and questioned whether Facebook Live — a strategic area of development for the company — should be disabled, after several cases in which it was used to broadcast rapes.

Zuckerberg said Facebook has been working on better technology that can identify violent or inappropriate content — and that its efforts to screen for acts of violence appeared to be paying off.

“Just last week, we got a report that someone on Live was considering suicide,” he said.

“We immediately reached out to law enforcement, and they were able to prevent him from hurting himself. In other cases, we weren’t so fortunate.”

It was not immediately clear how and where Facebook would deploy the new monitors.

As Facebook approaches a global user base of two billion, it has been grappling with its role as a platform for sharing news as well as calls to violence and political propaganda.

The company has insisted it is not a “media company” that manages content seen by users, but it has faced growing calls to weed out “fake news” that may influence elections as well as “hate speech” barred in some European countries.

Last month, Facebook stepped up its security to counter efforts by governments and others to spread misinformation or manipulate discussions for political reasons.

Facebook also recently unleashed a new weapon in the war against “revenge porn” at the leading social network as well as the messaging services Messenger and Instagram.

Politics / N30trn Customs Probe: Senate Uncovers More Leakages by gabonsky: 6:43pm On May 04, 2017
Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, who presided at the plenary, said the senate ought to be commended for blowing whistle into the fraud in the Customs Service.

The Senate on Thursday expanded its panel currently investigating alleged N30 trillion revenue leakage in the Nigeria Customs Service following revelation of more leakages.

This followed a “Point of Order’’ raised by the Chairman, Committee on Customs Excise and Tariff, Sen. Hope Uzodinma, at plenary.

The chamber also mandated the Committee on Marine Transport to collaborate with the committee on Customs, in the probe in view of more revelations emanating from the exercise.

Uzodinma, who was made chairman of the joint committee, cited Order 42 and Order 52, and said that the committee discovered more startling discoveries beyond the N30 trillion currently being investigated.

According to him, the committee requires more hands in the investigation as it discovered that beyond foreign exchange fraud, more trillions of Naira was lost to shady deals by some Asian companies.

“The recent one which is mind-blowing is that shipping companies will load full cargoes worth billions of Naira, come into the country and go to bonded terminals, offload and Nigeria Government will not collect one kobo.

“All they do is informal negotiation with the terminal operators, the regulators and then they will offload. This is an international crime.

“We have identified over 228 vessels with their registration numbers, the terminals where they offloaded and we are going through Customs database tracking every shipment and vessel that came and offloaded.

“There is another fraud we discovered, which is, all the Asian companies moving all their goods to Cotonou in Benin Republic and these goods are meant for Nigerian market.

“From our investigation, the companies change their documents by mid night as if the shipment is either done from Cote d’ivoire or Cotonou and they move into Nigeria,’’ he said.

While lamenting the level of decay in the system, Uzodinma added that the fraudulent activities were carried out through various infractions, including incorrect classification, undervaluation, under-declaration and incorrect origin.

He stressed that the money being lost through the infractions was more than what the country was getting from crude oil, lamenting that nothing serious was being done about it.

The lawmaker, who said the investigation panel would explore all available data on the matter, added that it would bring it to a logical conclusion to save the country from losing money that should have been used for development.

“On Tuesday Nov. 15, 2016, we debated the motion on the need to examine the operations of the Nigeria Customs Service revenue drive.

“We resolved to mandate the committee on customs to carry out a holistic investigation into the activities of the service.

“This was with a view to identifying the leakages and irregularities in the import and export circle as well as causes of the reducing revenue profile of the service, and come up with recommendations.

“We have gone into this assignment and honestly speaking, we have identified between 2006 and 2017, over N30 trillion worth of foreign exchange in form of approved Form M and there is no evidence that the goods came into the country.

“The commercial banks apply for this foreign exchange and the Central Bank of Nigeria allocates it to them and these monies are transferred to foreign banks and there is no evidence to show that the goods came into the country.

“So they have been round-tripping with the limited foreign exchange we have in Nigeria,’’ he said.

In his remarks, the Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, who presided at the plenary, said the senate ought to be commended for blowing whistle into the fraud in the Customs Service.

He expressed concern that while Nigeria was seeking loans from foreign organisations, it was losing trillions of Naira that would have been used for developmental purposes.

“The Committee on Marine Transport will join the committee on customs to have a holistic investigation into this matter.

“I think this is one area the law enforcement agencies must move in quickly to ensure that these monies are recovered.

“We cannot be going to China and all over the world trying to borrow money when we can recover easily all the monies that were lost through some corrupt practices.

“This is one area the senate must be praised for blowing a whistle. This is the real whistle,’’ Ekweremadu said.

He commended the committee for a job well-done and urged it to expedite action on the investigation, adding that recovering such money would enable the country to implement the 2017 budget effectively.

Sports / Spanish Court Orders Barca’s Neymar To Stand Trial For Fraud by gabonsky: 6:26pm On May 04, 2017

Barcelona forward Neymar and his parents will stand trial over alleged fraud and corruption, making the Brazilian the latest football superstar to have to take the stand, a Spanish court ordered on Thursday.

The National Court also ordered Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu and his predecessor Sandro Rosell to be sent to trial over alleged fraud and corruption over Neymar’s transfer from Santos in 2013.

They will stand trial for “business corruption and fraud”, the court said in a statement.

The two clubs, Barcelona and Brazil’s Santos, were also ordered to stand trial.

Neymar’s arrival from Brazil’s Santos has been a huge success for the Spanish champions on the pitch but a judicial nightmare off it.

The 25-year-old striker is being investigated in Brazil and Spain over his headline move to La Liga.

The case initiated with a complaint from Brazilian investment company DIS, which owned 40 percent of Neymar’s sporting rights at the time of his transfer.

DIS received just 6.8 million euros — 40 percent of the 17 million euros fee paid to Santos — with the company claiming it was cheated out of its real share because part of the transfer fee was concealed by Barcelona, Santos and the Neymar family.

But the court suspects Santos was actually paid 25 million euros, which would mean DIS was cheated out of 3.5 million euros.

Barcelona originally published the transfer figure as 57.1 million euros ($62.3 million), with 40 million euros of that given to the player’s family and the rest to Santos.

– Jail term sought –
DIS has called for five-year sentences for Neymar and his parents, who acted as the player’s representatives, eight years for Rosell and Bartomeu plus a mammoth 195 million euro fine for Barca.

Spanish prosecutors have recommended that Neymar be handed a two-year jail sentence and fined 10 million euros.

Sentences of two years or less are habitually suspended for first time offenders in Spain.
However, DIS also recommended that Neymar be banned from playing football during any judicial sentence.

In July 2016 a judge ruled that irregularities in the transfer were detected, but said it was an issue for a civil court, not a criminal court to settle.

But prosecutors successfully argued the player and his father were aware of potentially fraudulent dealings between Barcelona and Santos to the detriment of DIS to fully overturn that decision.

The decision to order Neymar to stand trial is another blow to the image of the Spanish giants and the player himself.

Barcelona hoped to bring an end to the murky affair when the club agreed to pay a 5.5-million-euro fine in a deal with prosecutors in June to settle a separate case and ensure the club avoided trial on tax-evasion charges over the transfer.

– Messi sentenced –
Neymar is far from the only Barca star to find himself embroiled in problems with the Spanish authorities.

Five-time World Player of the Year Lionel Messi and his father were given 21-month suspended jail sentences in July 2016 for tax fraud relating to the player’s image rights.

Barca’s Argentine defender Javier Mascherano also agreed a one-year suspended sentence with authorities for tax fraud earlier this year.

The off-field upheaval hasn’t affected Barca, Neymar’s signing being an undoubted sporting success as he has formed one of the most fearsome strike partnerships of all-time with Messi and Luis Suarez.

Barca have won back-to-back Spanish league and Cup doubles with the trio and won the Champions League in 2015.

Neymar signed a bumper new deal with the club to extend his contract until 2021 in July 2016 despite admitting he held talks with Paris Saint-Germain amidst interest from a host of top European clubs in luring him away.

Foreign Affairs / Clinton: FBI Chief And Russia Cost Her Election by gabonsky: 10:10pm On May 02, 2017
The Democrat, speaking at a women’s forum in New York, said she took “absolute personal responsibility” for a series of campaign blunders that contributed to her loss against Donald Trump.

Hillary Clinton on Tuesday laid the blame for her defeat in last year’s White House race squarely at the feet of FBI director James Comey and Russia, saying their interference had “scared off” voters.

The Democrat, speaking at a women’s forum in New York, said she took “absolute personal responsibility” for a series of campaign blunders that contributed to her loss against Donald Trump.

But she pointed a finger at Russian hacking and interference and, most notably, at the FBI director who revealed just before the November 8 election he was re-opening a probe into Clinton’s use of a personal email server while secretary of state.

“I was on the way to winning until a combination of Jim Comey’s letter on October 28th and Russian WikiLeaks raised doubts in the minds of people who were inclined to vote for me, but got scared off,” Clinton said.

“If the election had been on October 27, I’d be your president.”

In January the US intelligence community announced it had concluded Russia interfered in the election, and that President Vladimir Putin ordered a campaign to undermine the US democratic process and harm Clinton’s electability in order to help Trump win.

Clinton described Putin as someone who was “not a member of my fan club.”

“He certainly interfered in our election and it was clear he hurt me and helped my opponent,” she said.

Clinton pointed to the release of an old video tape on October 7 on which Trump is heard crudely discussing groping women, and how “within an hour or two” of the tapes release, the Russian theft of Clinton staffers’ emails were made public on WikiLeaks.

“What a coincidence. You just can’t make this stuff up,” she said.

Clinton’s remarks — which echoed CIA comments branding WikiLeaks a “hostile intelligence service” abetted by the likes of Russia — were the most extensive and direct about her loss since the shock result last year.

“The reason why I believe we lost were the intervening events in the last 10 days,” she said.

As a former first lady, US senator and secretary of state, the 69-year-old Clinton said she has spent decades “learning about what it would take to move our country forward.”

“I’m now back to being an active citizen and part of the resistance,” she said, referring to the informal movement opposed to the Republican president.

Health / Asthma Kills 250,000 Yearly, 20m Nigerians Live With Ailment by gabonsky: 7:55am On May 01, 2017
As the World Asthma Day is marked tomorrow, medical experts have urged the Federal Government to subsidise medications on the ailment and create specialised centres to manage it.

The international day is marked to improve asthma awareness and care around the world. The theme of this year’s event is “You Can Control Your Asthma.”

A Professor of Medicine and Consultant Chest physician, Gregory Efosa Erhabor, made the call in an exclusive interview with The Guardian at the weekend.

He disclosed that asthma kills about 250,000 people yearly, adding that over 400 million would be prone to the condition by 2025.

Erhabor, who spoke under the aegis of the Nigerian Thoracic Society (NTS), urged the Federal Government to support organisations that were involved in its management.

He stressed that anecdotal evidence showed that 15 to 20 million people suffer from asthma, stating that it had become a burden to families because it was still under-diagnosed.

The physician, who is also the founder and project director of Asthma and Chest Care Foundation (ACCF), said the NTS would launch its first asthma guideline tomorrow.

He said the launch became necessary due to the absence of a guideline, which has made its management difficult.

He urged the Federal Government to support the NTS to ensure that the guideline is successfully launched and distributed across the country.

Erhabor disclosed that the President of the NTS, Prof. Etete Peters would soon inaugurate some committees to extend the scope to other diseases like pneumonia, tuberculosis and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

The chest physician told The Guardian: “The reason the ailment has been widespread is the lack of understanding of the pathophysiology of the condition. The basic pathology in asthma is inflammation of the airways and the result is bronchial obstruction.

“Bronchial obstruction is the expression of the inflammation clinically, but most doctors concentrate on the expression of the disease rather than the actual cause.”

He urged asthmatics to study their own asthma to know “what triggers the attacks and partner their physicians towards managing them,” he said.

Crime / Persian Satellite TV Channel Owner ‘shot Dead In Istanbul’ by gabonsky: 2:16pm On Apr 30, 2017
Said Karimian, the owner of the GEM TV Group and a British citizen of Iranian origin, was gunned down late Saturday along with a Kuwaiti business partner in the upscale Maslak district of Istanbul.

The owner of a leading Persian-language satellite entertainment channel was shot dead by unknown individuals in Istanbul along with another man, Turkish media reports said Sunday.

Said Karimian, the owner of the GEM TV Group and a British citizen of Iranian origin, was gunned down late Saturday along with a Kuwaiti business partner in the upscale Maslak district of Istanbul, the Hurriyet newspaper said.

Initial reports on Saturday had said two Iranians had been killed, without giving the identities.

In a statement on its Facebook page, GEM TV confirmed that Karimian had died but without making clear the circumstances of the death.

“With great sorrow and regret we announce the death of Said Karimian,” it said, describing him as a “great man who with a pure and kind spirit spent his life with honesty and sincerity for dignity of Iran”.

Kuwait’s state-run KUNA news agency quoted the Kuwaiti consul general in Istanbul as saying that a Kuwaiti citizen was shot and killed in Istanbul late Saturday.

Dogan said that the two men were shot dead while driving in the Maslak area by individuals in another vehicle who blocked the path of their car, got out, and gunned them down.

The assailants got away in their vehicle which was then found burned out in the Istanbul district of Kemerburgaz. Police are still trying to find them, Dogan said.

Based in Dubai, GEM-TV offers Western programmes to Persian-speaking audiences that are not available in the Islamic Republic including US game shows and Turkish soaps.

It is regarded with disdain by Tehran which sees such satellite channels as trying to culturally infiltrate the population and Westernise their lifestyle.

The group has been on a large expansion offensive, recently adding several new channels and recruiting Iranian artists and staff from inside and abroad.

Conservative Iranian media reports meanwhile said Karimian was linked in the past to The People’s Mujahedeen of Iran (PMOI), an exiled opposition group which Tehran sees as a criminal network aiming to bring down the Iranian government.

Science/Technology / Google, Kaduna Government Empower 5000 Youth With Digital Internet Skills by gabonsky: 9:39am On Apr 30, 2017
In a bid to equip youth with requisite skills for business growth and how to become employers of labour in the long run, Google, in collaboration with Kaduna State Government and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) has trained no fewer than 5000 persons on digital Internet skills.

Beneficiaries, who stormed the training venues at Zaria, Kafanchan, Kachia, Murtala Square and Ahmadu Bello Stadium, were said to be within 18-35 years age bracket.

Google Lead Trainer, Mr. Luke Ini-Ima, told journalists that the training was part of the government’s youth empowerment programmes, adding; “This training will, therefore, enable the unemployed youths tap from the huge opportunities in the ICT sector.”

Ini-Ima added: “On successful completion of the training, the beneficiaries are expected to create online platforms for the remaining 93 per cent of SMEs in the country. We will teach them all they need to know about online affiliate marketing and how to make cool money online.’’

Also in an interview with journalists at Ahmadu Bello Centre, Director of SDG, Mr. Nuhu Moses, said similar training has been conducted in Sokoto, Kebbi and Jigawa ahead of Kaduna in the Northwest geo-political zone, adding that similar exercise will be carried out in Kano, Zamfara and Katsina States.

Webmasters / 8 Plugins You Should Have Before You Launch Your Website by gabonsky: 9:32am On Apr 30, 2017
The goal, when using plugins, is to use as less as possible. Whenever you activate one, you want it to be absolutely essential, because otherwise it’ll slow down your website for nothing. Only download a plugin when you know you can’t do what it does on your own.

And there are quite a bit of things that are done way more efficiently with plugins! So let me introduce you to my favorite ones!

1. Yoast SEO
Of all the SEO plugins out there, Yoast is the one you want to be installed on your website. It won’t guarantee you that you’ll show up on the front page of Google for every one of your posts, but it will definitely take you a step closer if you use it properly.

2. All in One WP Security
There are quite a few security plugins to choose from, but I found All in One WP Security to do a lot for its price (free!). If you’re having problems with people trying to get into your website, you can ban their IP addresses or simply add a captcha to your login page. Or the easiest method in my opinion: change the URL of your login page for /wp-admin to something else only you knows! There are a lot of settings to choose from, but read carefully and you’ll have a super secure website!

3. WP Fastest Cache
If you don’t want to make all your visitors wait ten years before they can see your website, then you need a caching plugin. WP Fastest Cache is a powerful one that will do everything you need it too! It’s the one plugin I’ve had the most compatibility issues with, so make sure, after you activate it and set it up, that your website looks fine.

4. WP Smush
If you run a photo-heavy website, WP Smush will save your life! After you upload your pictures, WP Smush will try to reduce the file size as much as possible, so it loads quickly for your readers. It’s a great plugin if you’re trying to get a better score in Google Speed! (And trust me, those few KB it saves make a big difference when the internet connection of your reader is bad! I know, most of the time my connection is awful!)

5. BJ Lazy Load
If you haven’t heard of Lazy Loading before, it’s time to change that! After reducing the size of your files with WP Smush, the other thing you can do to help your website’s speed is to use lazy load. What is does basically is wait until the reader scrolls to your picture to load it. That way, it doesn’t have to load the thousand pictures you have in your post before the user can start reading! Awesome, isn’t it? And even if you blog or website isn’t picture-heavy, I’d get this plugin anyway!

6. UpdraftPlus – Backup/Restore
Your host is probably running a backup of your website, but just in case, I’d recommend installing a backup plugin. After all, you never know what might happen! And this way, you can rely on yourself and not your host! I synched mine to my Google Drive account and keep 2-3 backups at all time. I do one every day, because you never know…

7. WP Optimize
If you want to keep your website as fast as possible, it’s great to clean up your database once in a while! And WP Optimize can do it automatically for it! It will clear up your spam comments or old blog post revisions that you don’t need anymore. This way, you won’t have unnecessary stuff in your database and will be able to keep it as small as possible.

8. Simple Share Buttons Adder
Finding a sharing plugin that doesn’t slow down your website considerably is hard. Forget about Shareaholic and SumoMe, those are bad for your website’s speed. Simple Share Buttons Adder is a lightweight plugin that doesn’t come with a lot of useless features. It does the job it’s asked to do, that’s all!

Romance / Eating A Vagina Can Cure Cancer According To Cancer Treatment Study by gabonsky: 5:31am On Apr 28, 2017
According to research, cunnilingus can help fight cancer!

According to research initially reported to have been conducted at the State University of New York, a man’s most important meal, could well be his partner’s vagina!

Hormones such as DHEA Hormones and Oxytocin are produced whenever cunnilingus happens.

DHEA Hormones come from the adrenal gland and also made in the brain. DHEA leads to the production estrogens (female sex hormones).

Lower DHEA levels are found in people with hormonal disorders, HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, depression, diabetes, inflammation, immune disorders, and osteoporosis.

Evidence suggests that DHEA may help treat depression, obesity, and osteoporosis.

Oxytocin is a hormone produced by the hypothalamus and secreted by the pituitary gland. This important hormone plays a crucial role in the childbirth process and also helps with male reproduction….but could it also prevent against cancer?

These hormones are currently being studied on their effects on cancer cells and possible preventative medication.

Oxytocin has already showed it is effective at warding off breast cancer in clinical hypothesis such as this one. More clinical studies on the two hormones are being carried out to determine their affects on cancerous cells.

Have fun!

Science/Technology / Study: Humans Arrived In North America 100,000 Years Earlier Than Thought by gabonsky: 4:40am On Apr 28, 2017
Conventional wisdom holds that the first humans arrived in North America at most 25,000 years ago.

What if the real date is much earlier? A team of researchers suggests that humans of some sort existed in North America some 130,000 years ago. This claim is based on a reexamination of purported stone tools and broken mastodon bones that were uncovered in the early 1990s. However, not all researchers who have seen the research agree with the findings.

Our tale begins in 1992, when the state of California was building a new highway. Workers uncovered what appeared to be the remains of a large animal, which turned out to be a mastodon.

Experts from the San Diego Natural History Museum were dispatched to investigate and exhume any artifacts. What they found at the Cerutti Mastodon site was a collection of mastodon bones and what might be stone tools. The uncertainty over these artifacts is what leads to the controversy regarding the new findings.

In reexamining the materials from the Cerutti Mastodon site, Steven Holen and his colleagues believe they found evidence of human activity. That wouldn’t so unusual as mastodon remains are often found in close proximity to human artifacts. However, the team dated this site to more than 100,000 years before humans are believed to have arrived in the Americas.

The team was unable to date the remains with radiocarbon dating, so they resorted to uranium-thorium dating of multiple bone fragments. This technique is usually used on inorganic samples like cave carbonates and coral, which absorb uranium from seawater. However, organic material like bone can also absorb enough uranium from ground water to be dated.

A stone that could have been used as a hammer, according to researchers.

It’s the conclusions drawn from the artifacts that gives experts pause. The researchers behind the new analysis claim that spiral fracture patterns in the mastodon bones indicate they were broken while fresh, and these breaks are consistent with tool use by humans. They point to several stones that could have been used as hammers and anvils to break the bones, possibly to use pieces of the bones for constructing other tools.

The scientific community seems pleased with the dating methodology, but the presence of humans at the site is a tougher sell. A natural process could have caused damage to the bones, and the alleged tools don’t show undeniable evidence of human use. This is all far from certain, but interesting nonetheless. If this turned out to be accurate, it could mean that Homo sapiens was not the first human species in America. The Denisovans or Neanderthals might have beaten us to the new world

Politics / No $1.2bn In My Bank Account, Says Lai Mohammed by gabonsky: 4:16am On Apr 28, 2017
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed says the report that he has 1.2 billion dollars (about N400 billion) in his bank account is “fake and vicious’’.

The minister stated this on Thursday in Ilorin at the Annual National Conference and General Meeting of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) with the theme; “Communicating Values for Development and Sustainability’’.

The minister said that the report was invented by opposition to malign him and the government, adding that the alleged fund is about the budget of his ministry for 25 years.

“How else can you explain that people will believe and circulate a fake report that the Minister of Information and Culture that is yours truly has 1.2 billion dollars in his imaginary bank account?

“Let’s examine this for a moment. 1.2 billion dollars is about N400 billion.

“The entire yearly budget of the Ministry of Information and Culture, where I preside, is under 15 billion Naira and these include salaries, overhead and capital projects.

“Assuming, without conceding that the Minister somehow manages to transfer the entire budget into his personal account, it will take 25 years for him to amass N400 billion.

“Yet, this disinformation was lapped up by the public, he said.

The minister said that similar imaginary huge sums of money had been credited to other ministers. He condemned the ugly trend by opposition, who were inventing the fake and malicious stories using bloggers and some online media to malign government officials.

According to him, the intention of the perpetrators and carriers of the reports are to distract the government to lose focus, but it will not fall to their antics.

The minister said that Public Relations gave him the first break in life being the profession he practiced after his graduation for over 40 years.

Mohammed, a Fellow of the Institute said that the theme of the conference was apt and called on NIPR members to be proactive in the discharge of their duties.

“You must neither be intimidated, cowed nor be overwhelmed by the cynics, you must set your own agenda and daily review such with a view to improving on them.

“You must never lose touch with your traditional constituents. You must understand the tactics of the opposition, which is an ambush and irrational,’’ he said.

The minister specifically tasked government information managers to equip themselves with qualities such as integrity, courage, abnormal capacity for hard work, ingenuity resourcefulness and ability to think out of the box.

The President and Chairman Governing Council of NIPR, Dr Rotimi Oladele said the conference was to deliberate on how the profession could be used to promote communication values for development.

He underscored the need for practitioners to showcase national values and present them to a global market.

Oladele commended the minister for the support given to the Institute and for creating time to attend the event.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the minister also inaugurated a new Governing Council for the Institute to run for two years under the leadership of Oladele.

Some of the members of the Council are, former Defence Spokesperson, retired Gen. Chris Olukolade, former Director of Press and Protocol in the Ministry of Information and Culture, Mr Peter Dama and his successor, Mr Timothy Oyedeji.

Others are Mr Wale Adeniyi of Nigeria Customs Service, Alhaji Sule Yau a former Chief Press Secretary to Kano State Government and Alhaja Bola Osifeso.

Politics / That Money Belongs To Me! by gabonsky: 6:47am On Apr 25, 2017
Seriously, I don’t understand the controversy that trailed the discovery of some of the money being “discovered” by the EFCC as a result of their whistle blowing strategy. There is no need for any controversy. This money belongs to me…and YOU! It’s our money! What we need to know is who stole it and hid it? And this brings me to one fundamental truth about this anti-corruption campaign that many of us do not understand. I get sick when I hear or read about “Buhari”s anti-corruption fight”. What makes it Buhari’s anti-corruption fight? If money has been stolen, is it Buhari’s money? And if looted or questionably acquired money is recovered, is it going into Buhari’s personal current account? So why is it “Buhari’s anti-corruption fight”? I think a weak point in the government’s strategy is the failure to get the buy-in of the majority of Nigerians in this campaign. Many of us simply do not understand that this money being talked about is actually our money.

It is a danger to our democracy that majority of our people are docile and submissive. They have simply given up on this country and adopted a “helpless we against almighty them” attitude. They see government as “them”. And if any amount of money is described as government money, many of us see such money as ‘their money’. The politicians like this mindset because it works for their evil intentions. That is why we haven’t seen any prominent politician telling us “Look, this money we are fighting to recover is your money! You must join this fight to chase corruption out of our country!” Rather, what we have witnessed is a situation in which those who are guilty of stealing from the national purse, and obviously awash with cash are buying sections of the media and using online channels to campaign against the anti-corruption fight.

On this score, I think Uncle Lai Mohammed and his team must launch a campaign that makes all Nigerians understand that this money belongs to us. So the anti-corruption fight must involve all of us. I don’t know of anyone who would see a thief take his money and praise him instead of stoning him. But this is what is happening with our corrupt politicians and public office holders. Many of them go into public office to enrich themselves. And when they do, many of us sing their praises instead of tying them to the stake! I have seen many silly messages being broadcast online about how this government is harping on corruption of the past to hide corruption of the present. I find this argument preposterous! If this government is corrupt, then we only need to wait for the next government to come and expose them. But in the meantime, whatever this government is doing to catch past looters must enjoy our full support. We must also be mindful of the fact that those on the run with our money also have a share of the media space and they are running their propaganda, trying to discredit this government.

In an interview on Channels Television, Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN, said the way this government is going about the anti-corruption fight is hurting the image of the country. I find this laughable. Is it the person fighting corruption who hurts the image of this country, or the corrupt? It perplexes me how in this country we are very good at making the good person look like the villain. Oftentimes, the person trying to do the right thing finds himself walking alone like a lunatic. We have debased our community to such a level that the anomaly has become the norm and whoever does the normal thing is made to feel like an asylum escapee. If you go into public office and refuse to steal, people will say you’re stupid. Anywhere you try to follow the rules, others make you feel like a slowpoke. Stop at a red light and the real morons are honking behind you! We are in such a state of lawlessness sometimes I feel we are better off under a military regime, where looters of the public treasury are sentenced to death by the firing squad.

Apart from the obvious damage graft is doing to our development as a nation, the image of our country as one of the most corrupt in the world is killing us slowly. Those of us in the private sector are familiar with the difficulties of trying to do business with foreigners. This bad national reputation cuts right through the threads of trust that weave businesses together and engender mutual success. It is not even possible to calculate how much we lose as a result of our corruption ranking. With the explosion of digital media, reputation management has become a lot more difficult. Any piece of bad news easily goes viral and, like a broken egg, is beyond recovery.

Which makes it ever more compelling that we get our image right by doing the right things and doing things the right way. We must stop perceiving corruption as something that only happens in government and must be dealt with by government. We must take collective ownership of our commonwealth and support whatever effort is being made to recover stolen money. After all, it is our money.

Every month I sign the tax checks, I do so with faith and trust, believing that the money will be put to good use towards improving my quality of life. But more often than not, that trust is broken and the hoodlums that perpetrate such acts of betrayal of the public trust are allowed to go free. Worse still, many of them are celebrated and given national honours. This is heart breaking. It has to stop. And if this anti-corruption fight will not stop it, at least, it’s a start. It is our fight simply because it is our money. And to those who call it Buhari’s anti-corruption fight, I say to them: you’re a part of the problem.

Crime / Troops Recover Large Cache Of Arms In Southern Kaduna by gabonsky: 10:27pm On Apr 23, 2017
Troops in Southern Kaduna have recovered large cache of arms, three days after the army launched a special operation, `Harbin Kunama II,’ to flush out armed bandits from the area.

Brig.-Gen. Sani Usman, the Director of Army Public Relations, via a statement issued on Sunday, said the recovery was made on Saturday.

The special operation, Harbin Kunama – `Scorpion Sting,’ was launched in Kaura Local Government Area of the state on April 19.

According to Usman, the arms and ammunition were discovered when troops embarked on cordon and search of Gwaska, Dangoma, Angwan Far and Bakin Kogi general area of Southern Kaduna State.

He listed them as 73 dane guns, four locally made rifles, one locally made machine gun and one locally made pistol.

Others were 260 cartridges, 14 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, 63 rounds of 9mm ammunition, one locally made small machine gun magazine and a pair of worn out military boot.

Usman also said that some quantities of assorted improvised ammunition and pyrotechnics hidden in dug out pits were recovered.

“While efforts are ongoing to track down the owners of the arms and ammunition, it is imperative to state that the good people of the area have been very supportive and cooperating with the military which led to these unprecedented findings.

“Similarly, in Sector 1 of the operation which covers Kano State, troops in conjunction with other security agencies are carrying out operations in suspected armed bandits camps in Falgore forest,’’ he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the special operation also covers some forests in Bauchi, Kano and Plateau states.

Meanwhile, troops have cleared four Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) buried at a crossing point on Banki Junction and Pulka road, about six kilometres to Firgi in Borno by suspected terrorists.

The army spokesman, Brig.-Gen. Sani Usman, explained that the convoy of Maj.-Gen Idris Alkali, the Army Chief of Administration and GOC, 7 Division, Brig.-Gen. Victor Ezugwu encountered and cleared the devices.

They were in the area on a visit to troops.

“The Explosive Ordnance Device (EOD) team, however, was able to quickly detect the deadly IEDs and safely extracted and detonated them,’’ Usman said.

Foreign Affairs / Trump To Insist On Border Wall Funds As Budget Deadline Looms by gabonsky: 10:15pm On Apr 23, 2017
High-powered aides to Donald Trump pressed for funding of a Mexico border wall Sunday as a looming spending showdown in Congress threatens to shut down the US government on the president’s 100th day in office.

Funding for the wall was Trump’s signature campaign promise, and the White House appeared determined to get Congress to approve a down payment as part of a bigger bill to keep the US government funded.

White House budget chief Mick Mulvaney said the administration is prepared to make concessions to Democrats on health care reform in order to get the wall money.

But if the wall isn’t funded, will the president veto the larger spending bill, risking a government shut down on Saturday — coincidentally Trump’s 100th day in office?

“Don’t know yet,” Mulvaney said on Fox News Sunday. “We are asking for our priorities and importantly we are offering to give Democrats some of their priorities as well.”

The specter of a government shutdown has often loomed over US budget negotiations. The threat has most often been averted — but has come to pass several times, most recently for 16 days in 2013 amid a dispute over funding for Barack Obama’s signature health care reforms.

Democrats showed little interest in a compromise this time around.

“I hope the president will back off,” said Senator Dick Durbin, the number two Democrat in the Senate, on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

“To think that he would consider shutting down the government of the United States of America over this outlandish proposal of a border wall, which we can’t even pay for at this point, and is opposed by Democrats and Republicans all along the border, that would be the height of irresponsibility,” he said.

Mulvaney insisted, however: “Shutdown is not desired and it’s not a tool, it’s not something we want to have.

“We want our priorities funded and one of the biggest priorities during the campaign was border security, keeping Americans safe and part of that was a border wall.”

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly made similar pitches on other television talk shows.

“I think it’s certainly worth hard negotiation over,” said Kelly on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

“We have tremendous threats, whether it’s drugs, people, potential terrorists, coming up from the south. And some type of a barrier, an effective barrier backed up by the brave and very effective men and women of DHS, I believe is essential.”

Sessions said Trump would decide whether the wall money was worth risking a government shutdown for.

“But I know one thing, we need that wall,” he said on ABC’s “This Week.” “It will help us complete the promise that the president has made to the American people. That’s what they want.”

Lexusgs430:
I would keep the money in the bank, wait for the value to depreciate or look for two slightly higher mileage examples.
You see, I can buy both.........

Bro just chose one now?

We've entertained some abstract theoretical questions in our time, but the idea of which seven-figure supercar we'd pick is beyond hypothetical for most of us.

After all, most of us don't have the millions to spend on one. And even if we did, they typically carry years-long waiting lists.

If you’re ready to give it a try, here are 18 simple ideas for adding some spice to your marriage. Give one of these, or any fun and sexy activity, a try this week. (This post contains Amazon affiliate links.)

18 Ways to Spice Up Your Marriage

Take a shower together.

Give him a full body massage. Start at the top and work your way down. Or ask him to give you one.

Have sex at a different time of day. Try it one morning or after a Sunday afternoon nap, for example.

Read a sex-positive book or blog and try one thing you learn from it.

Make love somewhere other than your bedroom. Sometimes all you need is just a slightly different location!

Flirt with him. Remember the things you did when you were dating? Do those things. Wink at him from across the room. Play with his hair. Pinch his butt when he walks by. Kiss him passionately. Build him up and let him know you still think he’s special.

Disconnect from your devices and social media and focus on each other. Declare a device-free evening and spend time re-connecting after a busy day.

Do something unexpected. Send the children to a friend’s house for dinner, then spend a few hours together at home. Or arrange for a babysitter and book an inexpensive local hotel room. No babysitter or money? Get the kids in bed early, then watch a movie together and make out like teenagers.

Try a new position. It might be exciting, or it may not work out very well. Either way, have fun with it and enjoy your time together. Check out the Christian Nymphos position page for ideas.

Change the tempo of your lovemaking. If things usually move along quickly, slow the pace and enjoy every touch and movement. If your lovemaking is usually slow and deliberate, pick up the pace and try a “hot and heavy/let me rip your clothes off” approach!

Spice up your language. Say some things to your husband that stretch your sexual language “comfort zone.” This is hard for many women, but even slightly more risque communication about sex can boost your interest and give him a real thrill.

Send your husband some sexy texts or emails. If it’s too hard to say something sexy, write it instead.

Wear something that makes you feel confident and sexy. If that seems hard for you (and I think it does for most women!), check out some ideas for boosting your sexual confidence and feeling sexy. Or experiment with scents or essential oils that are known for boosting sensuality, such as ylang ylang or a sensuous floral blend.

Explore something you think will help you feel sexy, but that you haven’t tried yet. For example, I’m intrigued by the possibilities of corsets! I’ve never owned one or even tried one on, but I’m giving a corset serious consideration. Also aprons – those sheer or lacy vintage half-aprons that tie at the waist. Just sayin’…

Plan a date that facilitates sex and intimacy. Some dates don’t facilitate sex and intimacy; for example, a heavy restaurant meal at 9:00 pm is going to put most of us to sleep, not get us in the mood for something hot and heavy! So plan a date that leaves both of you feeling relaxed, refreshed and in the mood.

Play a sexy game, either an intimate game for couples or just a sexy version of a regular game (Twister, poker!).

Do something you did early in your marriage, but haven’t done for a while.

Pack a picnic lunch or dinner with bite-size foods, such as strawberries, grapes, cubes of cheese, small sandwiches and tiny cakes. Head to a secluded area of a park or other outdoor location and spread out your blanket, then feed each other bites. Let it be a sensuous activity that leads to other sensuous activities! (But head home before making love!)
