Investment / 5 Ways Artificial Intelligence Can Positively Impact Your Marketing Strategy by gabonsky: 1:31pm On Jun 08, 2017
Artificial intelligence is on a roll, especially in the marketing domain.

2017 opened with reports of global investments gaining momentum in the “fields of AI, robotics, and IoT technologies”.

The same report indicated a significant shift in investments by Chinese VCs, particularly in the Artificial Intelligence domain. It is believed that in five years’ time, every company should be prepared to compete in the AI domain to survive.

So are you aware that artificial intelligence can actually help marketers thrive?
The power to understand customer needs, emotions, and preferences globally is a big boon of this emerging technology.

Paradoxically enough, AI’s greatest strength may be in creating a more personal experience for your customer.

From visual search to virtual personal shoppers, digital marketing is on the verge of getting a superb makeover.

So let’s discuss how artificial intelligence (and the fruits of its artificial loins) can positively impact your marketing strategy.

1. It helps you know your customers better
Imagine knowing for sure what a customer has in mind when they connect with you or visit your website. Isn’t that at the heart of every marketer’s dream?

Knowing a customer’s needs, desires and expectations in advance enables marketers to plot out resources and personalize high-quality communications. And artificial intelligence is going to make it easy.

Personalization in marketing is obviously nothing new. Many eCommerce stores already use collaborative filtering to provide customers with relevant recommendations. However with the real-time personalization provided by AI, marketers will gain the ability to deliver different experiences to individual customers visiting their site or reading their emails, based on their previous behavior or demographic data.

One such project is already being tested at USAA, incorporating AI technology built by Saffron, now a division of Intel.

This AI technology analyzes thousands of factors and matches them with individual customers. The broad customer behavioral patterns are aligned with individual members, and as per reports, the technology has thus far helped USAA improve their guess rate from 50% to 88% accuracy. The guesswork mainly involves knowing how future contacts will get in touch, and for what products.
Predictive customer service is also going to be a huge side effect of artificial intelligence for marketers across the globe – a very positive one.

Think about the amount of time you spend analyzing the demographics of each customer and making templates sound personal. If you can know when, why and how each of your customers plans to communicate with you, you’ll have the golden opportunity to plan out your nurturing process on a much more advanced level.

2. It takes search engine algorithms to a new level
When Google admitted to using RankBrain in 2015, an AI system, to break down search queries, it was big news. RankBrain uses high-end natural language processing to break down large search queries. It also helps improve user context and voice search.

A simple way to explain it is as follows: a customer who has visited a particular food destination posts a review about his or her experience. Now, a customer typically writes a review in language that is ‘real’ and to some extent rhetorical, too. Let’s say they write, ‘This place has the best breakfast mushrooms that don’t cost a fortune’. With RankBrain, this automatically becomes a solution for someone who is searching for a place to ‘eat mushrooms within budget’.

AI will also introduce new visual search capabilities which allow consumers to upload an image to find similar or complementary products. In our increasingly visually marketed world – think Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook – this is going to be revolutionary. AI platforms which can ‘read’ images for clues will be essential to eCommerce success.

3. It allows related recommendations and suggestions
Once a user subscribes to your page or website, sending out email newsletters is a key part of a good marketing strategy, and they will probably include product recommendations.

Many companies already use artificial intelligence to suggest or recommend new offers based on their subscribers’ activities and other demographics. For instance, Netflix uses predictive analytics to suggest shows or movies that might interest you.

As AI technology gets more and more sophisticated, these suggestions or recommendations grow even more closely aligned to your interest domain. It isn’t magic, but it is the power of AI. Companies like Netflix which already use artificial intelligence to gather information from various datasets will find their predictive analytics only get stronger.

New technology can also help creative marketers fine-tune their decision-making.

Used properly, these technologies can surface the insights you need on command to help you make creative and data-backed decisions about what will perform. And all with minimal time or human resources wasted.

4. It amps up cyber security
Online shopping is at its peak, and enlisting machines to do the heavy lifting in terms of advanced security simply makes sense.

Safe and secure transactions can no longer be assured just through usernames and passwords. The need for AI in the security domain is extreme.

As most marketers know, e-retailers are highly prone to breaches. There is a dire need for advanced solutions that will instantly alert businesses in the case of frauds, breaches and unstructured data.

Cyber adversaries have long leveraged machines and automation techniques to streamline their operations and the growth of AI will drastically improve e-retailer’s detection and response capabilities.

AI technology is able to identify threats, assess risks and orchestrate remediation, all while marketers catch up on z’s. You can already use NLP to analyze text used in the transactions, categorizing it as structured or unstructured data.

At the end of the day, all your marketing efforts are designed to drive your customers to make a purchase. And if their data isn’t secure, all your efforts will go to waste. It’s time to admit that society has reached a tipping point where the sheer volume of security data can no longer be handled by humans.

5. It helps with content generation
Marketers are often heard chanting, “Content is king!” And indeed it is. Good high-quality content has the power to change the face of your business.

Why else would marketers chain themselves to a computer to carefully curate original, error-free and compelling content?

But what if that content can be automated?
According to Gartner, a full 20% of business content will be written by machines from 2018. They claim that business content, such as shareholder reports, legal documents, market reports, press releases, articles and white papers, are all prime candidates for automated writing tools.

Wordsmith is a platform that helps in generating automated news articles and there are many more like it on the way. The Associated Press now has machines writing full earnings reports.

However, you will still need to have structured data for the content generators to work off and feed reports into the CSV correctly. Automated narratives may turn out a little clunky and imperfect, and additional editing and tweaking may be required by a human content specialist.

Still, if reasonably high-quality content can be generated with the help of AI, it will undeniably help marketers deal with the increase in competition and writing content at scale.

Wrapping up
The impact of AI for marketers (and in general) is definitely worth talking about.

It will facilitate language recognition, analyze inbound emails, and take actions accordingly. It will help marketers better understand the past behaviors of customers and assist in filtering emails based on which leads should be disqualified.

Chatbots are presumed to be the future of user input on mobile. AI in marketing will lead to smarter ads, sentiments and emotions, search results and customer service.

AI is all set to make its presence felt like a major player, whether you are ready for it or not. It’s got a lot to offer, and machine learning definitely has its perks.

Google implemented machine learning in search, advertisements and recommendations on YouTube years ago, and it’s high time for marketers across the globe to take steps toward doing the same.

Girls More Likely to Have Sex, Take Sexual Risks, and Marry Young If They Menstruate Early

The timing of a girl's first menstruation may affect her first sexual encounter, first pregnancy, and her vulnerability to some sexually transmitted infections, according to a meta-analysis by researchers at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health.

These patterns of sexual and reproductive health outcomes for girls in low- and middle-income countries who menstruated at an early age are similar to what has been observed in high-income countries such as the U.S. Until now, there was little known about associations between early menarche and sexual and reproductive health outcomes in less advanced economies.

Good morning ma, Read my research post very well and do you know that we have two types of death, the spiritual death and the physical death. what kind of death are you talking about that can knock at human being at any moment?
Politics / Church Services Can Extend Your Lifespan, Researchers Find by gabonsky: 10:17pm On Jun 06, 2017
Worship services at a church, mosque, or synagogue can extend your lifespan, lower your stress levels and improve your physical health, a new study claims.

Behavioral scientists at Vanderbilt University studied 5,500 people of all races and both genders. Two-thirds of them (64 percent) regularly attended worship sessions.

The team found the religious participants scored better in terms of heart health, nutrition, and metabolic health. This divide was seen most clearly among middle-aged adults, aged 40 to 65, who had far better health if they attended religious ceremonies, the study claims.

The study was led by Marino Bruce, a behavioral scientist and ordained Baptist Minister.

“Our findings support the overall hypothesis that increased religiosity—as determined by attendance at worship services—is associated with less stress and enhanced longevity,” said Bruce, who worked with nine co-authors on the study, including Keith Norris, professor of medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at University of California Los Angeles (UCLA).

“We’ve found that being in a place where you can flex those spiritual muscles is actually beneficial for your health.”

He added: “Sometimes in health science we tend to look at those things that are always negative and say, ‘Don’t do this. Don’t do that’.”

But the new research findings, he said, are “encouraging individuals to participate in something”.

The study, which appears in the journal PLOS ONE, uses data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), collected by the United States Centers for Disease Control (CDC’s) National Center for Health Statistics.

The researchers documented each person’s attendance at worship services, as well as their health in a number of categories.

Specifically, they looked at their “allostatic load”. One’s allostatic load is a measurement of many factors, including heart health (blood pressure and cholesterol levels), nutrition, and metabolic health (such as waist-hip ratio) measures.

A high allostatic load indicates a high level of stress and a poor level of overall physical health.
Non-worshipers had significantly higher overall allostatic load scores, Bruce said.

They were also more likely to have severe health issues in one of the categories, compared to worshippers.

The effects of attendance at worship services remained after education, poverty, health insurance, and social support status were all taken into consideration.

The study did not look at how health could be affected by more or less worshipping.

“We found that they go to church for factors beyond social support,” Bruce said.

“That’s where we begin to think about this idea of compassionate thinking, that we’re trying to improve the lives of others as well as being connected to a body larger than ourselves.”

Science/Technology / Give Up Make-up To Guard Against Breast Cancer by gabonsky: 10:04pm On Jun 06, 2017
cientists have discovered how a group of chemicals in everything from shampoo to booze can cause cancer.

The chemicals, known as aldehydes, are made in our body in tiny amounts and can be found everywhere in our environment.

Too much exposure to aldehydes, however, causes cancer by breaking down our ability to fix Deoxy ribonucleic Acid (DNA)/genetic material, a new study has found.

Aldehydes are made in our body in tiny amounts and can be found everywhere in our environment. They used regularly in cosmetics and other products can exacerbate a faulty BRCA2 gene. Aldehydes are also found in car exhausts, smoke and building materials.

Those with the faulty gene are more at risk of developing breast, ovarian, prostate and pancreatic cancer.

Professor Ashok Venkitaraman, lead author of the study from the University of Cambridge, said: “We knew aldehydes were not nice and have been linked to cancer, but we did not know they damage proteins in the cells important for preventing the DNA damage which causes cancer.

“We don’t know how much of these chemicals we are breathing in or how long they last in the air after being produced, but aldehydes are found all over the place.”

Nose and throat cancer are particularly linked to formaldehyde, a colourless, strong-smelling gas which is used in embalming.

The study, published in the journal Cell, used genetically-engineered human cells to identify how aldehydes from pollution and other sources could cause cancer.

Researchers found the chemicals break down defence mechanisms in normal, healthy cells which help repair the damage to DNA when they divide.

Venkitaraman explained that the body has two copies of the BRCA2 gene.

This gene produces a protein that helps repair DNA damage. If this damage is not repaired it can develop into cancer.

Also, a leading United Kingdom (UK) breast cancer charity has warned that levels of endocrine disrupting chemicals contained in popular beauty products may increase women’s risk of developing the disease.

And the chemicals being highlighted by Breast Cancer UK appear in the ingredients on everything from Nivea moisturisers and Maybelline mascaras to Essie nail polish.

The charity’s Ditch The Junk campaign aims to raise awareness of the chemicals that people might wish to avoid, such as parabens, which are widely used as preservatives, and synthetic musks like galaxolide, commonly found in perfumes.

It has also released a handy infographic breaking down common ingredients in products from nail polish to hair spray to hygiene products, to arm shoppers with everything they need to know before their next trip to the beauty counter.

Also, a new research suggests exposure to chemicals found in shampoos and toys during early childhood may seriously damage the mental development of youngsters.

Girls with high concentrations of certain chemicals, known as phthalates, in their blood have lower levels of a thyroid hormone, a study found.

Study author Pam Factor-Litvak of Columbia University, said: “The thyroid acts as the master controller of brain development.

“Thyroid hormones set the schedule, and if the timing is out of synch, there may be later consequences in the brain.”

Previous research suggests up to 70 percent of the products we apply to our skin gets absorbed into our bloodstream, with our scalps having one of the highest absorption rates of anywhere on our bodies.

Phthalates are thought to mimic hormones, particularly estrogen, leading to hormonal-disruption driven disorders.

Also, Breast Cancer UK has warned hormone-disrupting chemicals in popular beauty products may increase women’s risk of developing the disease.

The cancer-causing ingredients are included in everything from Nivea moisturisers and Maybelline mascaras to Essie nail polishes.

The charity’s ‘Ditch The Junk’ campaign aims to raise awareness of the chemicals that people may wish to avoid, such as synthetic musks like galaxolide, which are commonly found in perfumes.

Another chemical, known as parabens, are used as preservatives to stop products going off, but they have no cosmetic function.

Their chemical structure is similar to oestrogen, meaning they can mimic the impact of the hormone in the body.

Research by the Silent Spring Institute in Massachusetts found even in low quantities, parabens increase the growth of breast cancer cells in lab tests.

Researchers at Columbia University assessed the link between phthalate exposure and thyroid function in children over time.

They measured five phthalates and two thyroid hormones from 229 pregnant women and 229 three-year-olds enrolled in the Mothers and Newborns Study at the Columbia Center for Children’s Environmental Health.

Results, published in the journal Environment International, revealed girls with lower levels of a thyroid hormone, known as FT4, had higher amounts of four common phthalates in their blood.

Pam Factor-Litvak said: “The thyroid acts as the master controller of brain development.

“Thyroid hormones set the schedule, and if the timing is out of synch, there may be later consequences in the brain.

“The thyroid disruptions we see in this study, although they fall within the normal range, could explain some of the cognitive problems we see in children exposed to phthalates and we are currently investigating that. As we know from lead, even small exposures can make a big difference.

“Parents with young children should avoid using products containing phthalates such as shampoos, nail polish, and vinyl flooring.”

In the study, thyroid disturbances did not occur to the same extent in boys, which may be due to past research that suggests phthalates mimic estrogen in particular.

Previous studies have shown phthalate exposure in pregnancy is associated with a lower IQ, asthma and mental and motor development problems in young children.

Food / HIV Drug Designed To Target Resistant Strains Passes Late-stage Trial by gabonsky: 8:46pm On Jun 05, 2017
A promising Human Immuno-deficiency Virus (HIV)/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) drug has succeeded in a late-stage trial – paving the way to a low intensity treatment that could target drug-resistant strains.

Gilead Sciences Inc, the makers of the current best-selling HIV treatment Truvada, announced that a new drug called bictegravir was successful in four phase three studies.

The drug has proven effective at targeting aggressive types of drug-resistant HIV. It is also less demanding than other medications, taken just once a day with no need for a booster.

In recent years, there has been dramatic progress in the medical field surrounding HIV, with more precise testing, potential vaccines and longer life expectancy. Gilead has plans to submit marketing applications in the United States (US) before the end of June, and in the European Union (EU) in before the end of September, so the product can be eventually approved for use.

The latest trials concluded the single tablet was just as effective treating the virus as other medications on the market, with the possibility of less side effects.

Gilead already has approved treatments for HIV and is pinning its hope on combining bictegravir with emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide (FTC/TAF). It comes as British rival GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) works on a two-drug treatment regimen for controlling the virus behind AIDS.

Three of the studies tested Gilead’s combination against a regimen containing GSK’s dolutegravir in previously untreated patients. Data showed the Gilead combination was as effective as GSK’s product. The regimen was also well tolerated and no patients discontinued the study due to kidney issues, a frequent side effect seen with HIV treatments.

Also, bacteria in the vagina affect whether a drug stops an HIV infection or is itself stopped cold.A vaginal gel containing tenofovir, an antiretroviral drug used to treat HIV infection, was three times as effective at preventing HIV in women who had healthy vaginal bacterial communities as it was in women with a less beneficial mix.

The finding may help explain why the effectiveness of these gels has varied in trials, researchers report in the June 2 Science.“The vaginal microbiota is yet another variable that we have to take into account when we are thinking about why one intervention does or doesn’t work,” says clinical scientist Khalil Ghanem of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, who coauthored a commentary accompanying the study.

For women, one strategy to prevent HIV infection is to apply medicated vaginal gels before and after sex. But results have been mixed regarding how well the gels work. The hit-or-miss effectiveness can partly be explained by some patients not taking the medication as prescribed. But study coauthor Adam Burgener, a microbiologist at the Public Health Agency of Canada in Winnipeg, wondered if there might also be a biological explanation.

The main residents of a healthy vaginal microbial community, or microbiota, are Lactobacillus species. The bacteria produce lactic acid, making the vaginal tract more acidic and possibly “less hospitable for potential pathogenic organisms,” Ghanem says.

To examine the effect of the vaginal microbiota on tenofovir, Burgener and colleagues turned to a previous trial of South African women, which showed that the drug reduced HIV infections by 39 percent. During that trial, samples of vaginal mucus were taken. In the new study, the researchers measured bacterial proteins in 688 of those samples to determine the bacteria in the women’s vaginas when the samples were collected.

Just over 400 women’s vaginal microbiota mainly had Lactobacillus species; the microbiota of the other 281 women were dominated by non-Lactobacillus species, such as Gardnerella vaginalis. Within those two groups were women who had used tenofovir vaginal gel and those who had used a non-medicated gel as a placebo.

In the Lactobacillus-dominant group, the incidence of HIV was 61 percent lower in women using the medicated gel compared with those using the placebo gel. But in the non-Lactobacillus dominant group, it was only 18 percent lower. There was no appreciable difference in the consistency of the gel’s reported use between the two groups, the researchers note.

Foreign Affairs / Saudi Shuts Al-jazeera Office In Qatar Row by gabonsky: 8:36pm On Jun 05, 2017
People buy snacks at a shop in Doha, on June 5, 2017. Saudi Arabia also closed its borders with Qatar, effectively blocking food and other supplies exported by land to Qatar after Arab nations including Saudi Arabia and Egypt cut ties with Qatar, accusing it of supporting extremism, in the biggest diplomatic crisis to hit the region in years. Local media in Qatar reported there was already some panic buying as people stock up on food.

Saudi Arabia on Monday shut the local office of Qatar’s Al-Jazeera global news channel after the kingdom and other Arab states severed ties with the emirate.

“The Ministry of Information closed the office of the Al-Jazeera channel and withdrew the licence it was granted,” the official Saudi Press Agency reported.

It accused the channel of promoting “terrorist groups” and supporting rebels in Yemen, after Riyadh and some of its allies including Egypt cut diplomatic relations earlier Monday over Qatar’s alleged support for groups including the Muslim brotherhood.

Separately, beIn Sports, a subsidiary satellite network of Al-Jazeera, went offline in the neighbouring United Arab Emirates, said an official in the UAE which was also among those to cut ties with Qatar.

“We are getting a lot of calls regarding this… (the channels) are currently off air in the UAE,” said an official at the DU telecommunications company, without elaborating as to why.

Cairo has accused Al-Jazeera of supporting the Muslim Brotherhood which it blames for violence after Egypt’s military ousted the movement from power in 2013.

Three Al-Jazeera journalists, including a Canadian and an Australian, were detained in Egypt between 2013 and 2015, triggering international protests.

Investment / Japan’s Bitpoint To Add Bitcoin Payments To Retail Outlets by gabonsky: 3:44am On May 31, 2017
BITPoint Japan Co., the company behind Peach Aviation Ltd.’s move to let travelers use bitcoin to pay for tickets, is planning to give hundreds of thousands of Japanese retail outlets the ability to accept the digital currency.

“We’re holding discussions with a retail-related company,” Genki Oda, BITPoint’s president, said in a recent interview. “By going through a company providing payment terminal services to shops, we have the possibility of increasing its use at one stroke. It’s easier than talking to lots of individual retailers.”

BITPoint is joining a flurry of companies embracing regulations, enacted in Japan last month, that recognize digital currencies as a form of payment. That has helped to make yen trades one of the world’s largest transaction pools, exceeding China’s pole position at the end of 2016, according to Oda. Bic Camera Inc., one of the country’s biggest electronics retailers, began accepting bitcoin at two stores in Tokyo last month.

“We’re also talking to a big convenience store operator about using it,” said Oda, 36, who also runs BITPoint parent Remixpoint Co., which had a market value of about 21 billion yen ($189 million) on Friday. He said he’s aiming to make an announcement by early next year.

The shares of Remixpoint rose as much as 18 percent to their daily price limit. Last week, Remixpoint said it will convert debt issued to BITPoint into equity, raising its ownership in the subsidiary to 97.7 percent.

Bitcoin, which debuted eight years ago, is gaining wider use as a way to pay for goods and services, and lets people transact without oversight from governments, regulators or central banks. The virtual currency has been rallying against the dollar and other fiat currencies and was trading at $2,210 on Monday, near record highs.

While BITPoint operates as a bitcoin exchange, it’s pushing to promote the use of the cryptocurrency in stores and other retail outlets, instead of as a speculative instrument. The company currently has ties with tens of retailers and plans to expand that number, Oda said.

A change in Japanese law on April 1 formalized rules around anti-money laundering and put in place standards for security and audits. Restaurant booking site Gurunavi Inc. will start letting diners pay with bitcoin later this year, the Nikkei newspaper reported last month.

“It’s funny how the whole narrative of bitcoin being risky or dangerous has changed, and it is now seen as a form of pride to regulate and embrace it,” said Thomas Glucksmann, head of marketing at Hong Kong-based bitcoin exchange Gatecoin.

Asked about the recent climb in bitcoin’s value, Oda said he’s wary of the sudden jump and doesn’t think it’s sustainable. At the same time, Japanese investors and day traders are taking a serious look at bitcoin as an asset class, thanks to the new regulations, he said, adding that several large foreign exchange brokerages will begin bitcoin trading in the coming months, boosting volumes.

Still, it’s unclear whether bitcoin payments can become more than a marketing gimmick. The biggest hurdles include long network confirmation times and high transaction fees. While many bitcoin community members rallied around a new proposal last week to fix the problem, deep differences within the group have led to several similar solutions falling through since 2015.

Health / A Little Girl Console By Chinese Doctor For Fear Of Operation by gabonsky: 2:15pm On May 30, 2017
Xin Er had a heart condition which meant that she needed to undergo major heart surgery at the Zhejiang University Hospital in China.

Understandably, the young girl was incredibly frightened at the prospect of having to go through the operation, and started weeping in fear as she entered the operating theatre.

This is when surgeon Shi Zhuo, who is the Deputy Director of Cardia Surgery stepped in and comforted the girl by watching her some cartoons on his phone with her.

The photos were taken by anaesthetist Jin Ziying, and show the beautiful moment that sometimes being a doctor involves more than just what you learn at med school.

Not only was Zhuo the man to perform the life-saving surgery, but he also calmed the patient down beforehand.

Like you didnt hear our minister say Nigeria will start producing pencils 2019.
The truth is our Universities are brain drain.
The only thing our schools prepare us for is how to seek and apply for jobs. They teach us how to speak good English.
Nigerians are intelligent I must say. When they leave the shores of this nation, they do well.
I struggled to make a decent grade here in Nigeria but when I went to states for a training which they considered tough, I came out the best overall. I have friends and some other people who have same experience.
The govt needs to be serious and invest heavily in our universities. Schools should be equipped. Our teachers/lecturers need to be trained and retrained. We should have functional research institutes.
We cant keep wasting brains.. Now a lot of our youth have found solace in fraudulent activities... Most are yahoo boys now.
I really do fear for this country..

we will get there probably in 2050

Science/Technology / Nigeria Ranks 114 Out Of 128 In Innovation Index 2016 by gabonsky: 5:01am On May 30, 2017
The Global Innovation Index (GII) 2016 has ranked Nigeria 114th out of 128 countries globally surveyed and considered to be innovating and thinking ahead. The 423-page document obtained by The Guardian, yesterday, showed that about 19 countries including Mauritius, South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, Kenya, Rwanda, Malawi, Uganda, Tanzania, Ghana, among others in Africa are investing in innovation and are far ahead of Nigeria.

Painfully, Nigeria is placed slightly above countries including Benin Republic, Burkina Faso, Niger, Cameroun, Zambia, Togo and Guinea in terms of innovation.

The report, which claimed that Nigeria was performing below its level of development, said Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, and Uganda stand out for being innovation achievers at least four times in the past five years.

The GII puts Information and Communications Technology (ICT) access and use in Nigeria at 28.2 per cent and 18. 1 per cent respectively, with government’s online service and e-participation put at 30.7 per cent and 33.3 per cent respectively, which it described as low.

Indeed, innovation is important at all stages of development; specifically, the creation and diffusion of technologies are important for economic growth and welfare across all economies. The implication of not innovating and developing means that the country may remain a dumping ground for all forms of technologies from other countries.

Experts have however, blamed the slow pace of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) growth in Nigeria on poor and non-implementation of policies that can drive growth with a charge on both ministers of Communications and Science and Technology, Adebayo Shittu and Dr. Ogbonaya Onu, respectively to match policies with actions so that the country can be at par with other developed nations.

“I don’t see why we will have as a nation two important ministries, I mean Communications and Science and Technology and nothing developmental and innovating are happening,” said Kehinde Aluko, a telecoms expert.

The report ranked Switzerland first in the world with 66.3 per cent level of innovation with an efficiency ratio of 0.94 per cent against world’s 0.65 per cent. Sweden is second with 63.6 per cent and 0.86 per cent efficiency ratio; United Kingdom; United States of America; Finland ranked third, fourth and fifth with 61.93 per cent (0.83 per cent efficiency ratio); 61.40 per cent (0.79 per cent efficiency ratio) and 59.90 per cent (0.75 per cent efficiency ratio).

Nigeria, according to the GII, has an innovation index of 23.15 per cent and efficiency ratio of 0.57 per cent. Mauritius and South Africa, the two countries ranked highest in Africa have their GIIs put at 35.86 per cent (0.57 per cent efficiency ratio) and 35.85 per cent (0.55 per cent efficiency ratio) respectively.

Politics / Reps, Stakeholders Seek Financial Autonomy by gabonsky: 4:37am On May 30, 2017
House of Representatives and stakeholders in the communication sector yesterday proposed financial autonomy for Nigeria Postal Service (NIPOST) to meet international best practices.

At a public hearing on the bills to repeal the Nigerian postal service Act and to amend the stamp duties Act, conducted by the House Committee on Telecommunications, participants also seek to give NIPOST the enabling environment to measure up with the advanced postal administration.

In his welcome address, the Chairman of the Committee, Saheed Akinade-Fijabi, said with the passage of the bills, NIPOST would be well positioned for the realisation of the federal government financial inclusion programme, which seeks to provide access to the unbanked and under-banked rural communities as key to poverty alleviation.

He explained that the dwindling oil revenue and the current global recession necessitated the need for the nation to diversify its economy. He said: “The two (2) Bills seek to give NIPOST the enabling environment to measure up with the advanced postal administration in the deployment of its infrastructure and human resources as well as attainment of financial autonomy to meet international best practices.

“The dwindling oil revenue and the current global recession have necessitated the need for Nigeria to diversify its economy especially for the present administration to achieve its change agenda. And NIPOST is believed to be one of such key agency.”

Representing the Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shittu, the Post Master General of NIPOST, Barr. Bisi Adegbuyi noted that most of the laws regulating the agency were obsolete, adding that there were five core-challenging issues, which necessitated the amendment of the extant Act.

Asked if the use of an adhesive postage/electronic stamp to denote a document or receipt or registrable instrument, amount to the payment of stamp duty tax? The Minister said no, adding, “denoting a document or receipt or registrable instrument is not the payment of a stamp duty tax.”

He also said that the provision of adhesive postage/electronic stamps by NIPOST does not infringe on the powers of the Federal Inland Revenue Services or a State Inland Revenue Service to access, collect and receipt the payment of stamp duty tax.

The Minister pointed out that the punishment contained in the law were no longer relevant, adding, “of what use is a N20:00k fine or a N200:00k fine when the cost of prosecuting the offender is on the average N100,000:00k.”

Shittu said that amendment such as the internet and the Point of Sale (POS)) machine have been captured as receipting medium, whose electronically generated receipts are to be denoted, adding that financial penalties have been introduced for a first offender, a second offender and a third or subsequent offender.

He said: “The proposed amendments if approved and implemented will unlock the revenue potential of the stamping Protocol to generate huge revenue for the benefits of all the tiers of government.

“The suggested amendments will also end the interagency rivalry, which is militating against the effective implementation of the stamping protocol. The amendments are recommended for the consideration and approval in the overall interest of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Leader of the coalition of civil society in the communication sector, Comrade Razaq Olokeba also hailed the initiative, saying it would help in repositioning the service.

'Dirty Electricity — Stealth Trigger of Disease Epidemics and Lowered Life Expectancy'

Many diseases of civilisation, especially cancer, are related to an artefact of electricity: electromagnetic interference (EMI) or “dirty electricity.” Historical data also suggests electrification has lowered life expectancy.

EMI is biologically active and affects mitochondrial function, which we’ve now come to appreciate is at the heart of virtually all chronic disease.

Cancers appear to be frequency-specific, meaning certain frequencies cause specific cancers. Male breast cancer is a sentinel for EMI exposure.
