PoliticsInsecurity In The Land by gabonsky(op): 6:11am On May 28, 2017
Contrary to the expectations of compatriots after the current administration came into office, a general feeling of insecurity and helplessness is on the increase in the land. From brutal kidnappings, armed robberies, ritual killings, suicide bombings in the North eastern part of the country, rampaging and murderous Fulani herdsmen, to the ugly rumours of politicians unduly hobnobbing with members of the Armed Forces in order to destabilise the nation, Nigerians are worried that they have been given the short end of the stick. In all of this, the security forces appear to be helpless as well. The Police, especially charged with internal security virtually lie prostrate in the face of security challenges. Indeed, Nigerians no longer have the inner confidence that the State can actually protect lives and property and provide a climate where prosperity could spring from.

Added to this is the tension caused by the rising cost of living. Inflation, power failure, job losses, failing businesses, the abysmal rate of exchange of the naira to other currencies, unemployment, and a feeling of despondency leading to an increase in suicide rate are challenges we also face. People are disenchanted with the current Federal government because of its failure to address the basic daily problems, which confront them. Uncertainty about the fate of the economy and how to face the future is also a major concern.

Ensuring general security is the main duty of government to the people. Any government, which fails to guarantee the safety of life and property is not worth its salt. In Nigeria, internal security is the responsibility of the Nigeria Police. The intelligence arm of the Police, along with other security agencies such as the Department of State Security, (DSS), are charged with gathering intelligence with a view to thwarting acts that could be detrimental to the nation. Furthermore, after criminal acts have been carried out, the Police ought to be able to fish out the culprits. Our experience has been that criminals of some dastardly crimes are hardly ever caught. Intelligence gathering has failed. Crime prevention is abysmal. Crime detection appears worse.

Of late, kidnapping has entered into the realm of ‘familiar’ crimes. Countless families have been subjected to the trauma of abductions. In some cases there is loss of life. Ransom is paid. The victim is the released. Indeed, some families would rather negotiate with the kidnappers than report to the Police. The time has come for the Nigeria Police to develop a counter-measure to this menace. Kidnapping ought to be contained given the level of telecommunication equipment, which are available in the market.

Also very distressing are reported cases of criminals who masquerade as herdsmen to perpetrate wanton acts of destruction of lives and property across the country. Benue, Kaduna, and Delta States have borne the brunt of these attacks. Some citizens became victims of the vicious attacks while carrying out the basic simple task of tending their crops in their farms. While in Benue State the Agatu massacre has gone down in history as one of the most deadly attacks in modern Nigeria history, the scoundrels are said to be deeply embedded in Ethiope East Local Government area of Delta State. A State legislator representing the Local government under reference has cried out that helicopters bring supplies to the herdsmen who had no authority in the first place to lodge in the area. Ekiti State has passed legislation to curb the menace of herdsmen whose cattle graze on farms meant for agricultural produce. The Federal Government has not taken any concrete steps to deal with the situation.

Sadly, the barbaric act of ritual killing is still present with us. Some depraved citizens still believe that offering a human being for sacrifice is a gateway to prosperity. Reports of disappeared children or ladies are rife. Sometimes, corpses are found with missing body parts. Unlike their counterparts in other climes who pursue mysterious murder cases to a logical conclusion the Nigeria Police is not known to take this task seriously. For example, it is on record that the British Police came to Benin City Nigeria on account of a torso they found floating in River Thames.

One of the obligations of power, which the people entrusted to the All Peoples’ Congress (APC) government is to create and sustain an atmosphere in the polity where individual and collective security is guaranteed. The President and his government, the Nigeria Police under the Inspector General and his men should rise to the occasion and reassure all that the situation can be controlled. The Federal Government should make affirmative pronouncements and take concrete actions to instill confidence in the people.

Romance7 Sexy Moves For Better Girl - On - Top Sex by gabonsky(op): 5:40pm On May 27, 2017
You know that girl-on-top sex can be quite the workout on its own, but flexibility and balanced strength in the quads and hamstrings can help you maintain the position without your legs prematurely giving out, according to Debby Herbenick, Ph.D., a sex researcher at Indiana University's Kinsey Institute and the author of The Coregasm Workout: The Revolutionary Method for Better Sex Through Exercise.

To boost strength where you need it and promote hip flexibility, practice these exercises from one of Instagram's sexiest certified fitness trainers, Ainsley Rodriguez (better known as @HardCoreAinsley). For any of the following moves, do as many reps as you can in 30 to 60 seconds.

1. Squat to Sumo Squat

How to do it: Take a wide stance with your feet facing forward. Keeping your chest high and your knees behind your toes, bend both knees about 90 degrees. Press up through the heels to come back to starting position, then turn your toes out about 45 degrees, and bend both knees about 90 degrees to perform a second squat. Press up through the heels to return to starting position and complete one rep.

2. Sumo Squat Pulse-Backs

How to do it: Take a wide stance with your feet facing outward about 45 degrees. Keeping your chest high and knees behind your toes, bend both knees about 90 degrees. Without standing up, press your knees out to the sides, then in. Continue to alternate pulses in each direction.

3. Bulgarian Split Squat

How to do it: Stand a few feet in front of a chair and place your right toes on the seat. Bend your front knee about 90 degrees, keeping the knee behind the toes and your shoulders stacked over your hips. Press up through the front heel to come back to standing position and complete one rep. Do as many reps as you'd like, then switch sides and repeat.

FamilyHow To Keep Your Bones Healthy? by gabonsky(op): 3:57pm On May 26, 2017
Our skeleton is made up of bones upon which the whole body is erected. Bones strengthen your body and allow free movement. They ensure that all the different parts of your body are protected. But do you know how to keep your bones healthy? Bone is a living and developing tissue. It is generally made of two materials – Collagen, a protein that gives a delicate structure and Calcium, a mineral that provides hardness to the bones. The combination of these two materials makes the bone solid and enables it to adapt to any kind of tension.

Bone discharges calcium and different minerals into the body when you require them for different functions. They help to support the body. This makes it important to keep them healthy. Brittle bones may be something that you expect to encounter when you are in your 60s. However, it is essential to know how to keep your bones healthy & strong right from the beginning.

How To Keep Your Bones Healthy?

Bones continue to build until the age of 30 and this is when they break down and rebuild faster. But the rebuilding process slows down after the age of 30. Following this, osteoporosis sets in. This causes bones to become weak and they may fracture with ease. Some may be more prone to develop osteoporosis and weak bones.

Have a look at how to keep your bones healthy and few ways to pump up your bone mass.

How To Keep Your Bones Healthy?
1. To Know Your Family Background
Family history is an important measure of bone health. Those with a family background of osteoporosis, have more chances of getting it. Asking your family might be awkward, but it’s important to know. Keep yourself informed and make sure your diet is healthy. Weak bones can only be prevented if you take care of it from as early as possible.

2. Make Calcium an Important Part of Your Diet
This is very important for the development of bones and teeth. It also helps to improve your muscle functioning and nerve signaling too. It is important to eat calcium-rich food help in developing your bone strength.

3. Intake of Vitamin D
Calcium and vitamin D go hand in hand. They help in the absorption of calcium and build bone mass. Having shrimps, sardines, cereals and orange juice will give you the adequate amount of vitamin D your body requires. Sunlight is another important source of vitamin D. It is found that older people experience loss in bone mass during winter mainly because of lack of exposure to sunlight.

4. Intake of Vitamin K
It is mainly known for the significant role it plays in the process of blood clotting. It also helps in building bone density. Just like how vitamin D absorbs calcium, vitamin K helps the body bring down calcium excretion. Kale, broccoli and spinach are rich in vitamin K.

5. Pump the Potassium
It’s normally important for the communication of nerves but it also helps bones to save up on their calcium by neutralizing acids that remove it from the body. High potassium intake shows the significant increase in bone density. Sweet potatoes and white potatoes help load up on potassium.

6. Make Exercise a Daily Routine
Regular exercise helps keep the doctor away. Running, walking, skipping and stair climbing help keeps bones strong. Resistance training enables you to build bone mass. Taking a few reps of dumbbells after going for a jog will definitely help you. Give your body a regular workout and make sure you don’t sit idle. The more you exercise the more healthy you will remain. Make it a daily routine and do not skip.

7. Have Less Coffee
Intake of caffeine does not work in your body’s favor. Too much of it interferes with the ability of your bones to absorb calcium. Having more than two cups of coffee accelerates bone loss. Consuming more than 18 ounces of coffee also has the same effect due to the interaction of vitamin D. This is why, in case you have the habit of drinking a cup or two of coffee, it is important to balance it out by consuming calcium as well.

8. Reduce Alcohol Consumption
You need to make sure you do not consume too much of alcohol. Too much of anything isn’t good. Heavy alcohol consumption results in bone loss. However, having one or two drinks may work in your favor as it may slow down bone loss.

9. Quit Smoking
This is one major reason for brittle and weak bones. Smoking leads to reduced calcium absorption in your body. Even if you consume a large portion of calcium rich food, smoking eventually kills the absorption capacity, and you!

Astronauts often suffer from osteoporosis because of hours of weightlessness and calcium deficient diet. They lose up to 1-2% of bone weight in a year. Think about your bones as a “bank” where you “credit” and “debit” bone tissues. During your youth and high school years, new bones are added to the skeleton quicker than old bones are expelled. Subsequently, your bones wind up noticeably bigger, heavier, and denser.

In case you don’t do as well as you can now, to make your bones solid, you may get osteoporosis when you are older. Many individuals have osteoporosis and do not know about it. This is because bone related issues happen over a prolonged stretch of time, and it has no side effects. The primary symptom of osteoporosis might be a softened bone up the spine, the hip, or the wrist. This condition can be extremely painful and will make it troublesome for a person to walk or do the things they have to do each day.

Calcium is included in your diet from the time you’re a baby because it is essential to have strong bones. Always make sure that you eat the right food and follow the right workout plan in order to maintain a healthy body. Do not neglect any discomfort, pain or other such symptoms. Consult a doctor and follow the required medication as and when needed. Your health must always be your primary concern. So do not prioritize any other luxury or habit for that matter over your health.

As we have seen here how to keep your bones healthy. So, Stay healthy and take good care of your bone health!

InvestmentBitcoin Surges To Record Above $2,500, Bringing 2017 Gain To More Than 150% by gabonsky(op): 12:34am On May 25, 2017
Bitcoin crossed the psychologically key $2,500 level Wednesday to a record after a late Tuesday announcement from the Digital Currency Group alleviated worries about a fractious debate among cryptocurrency investors and technological developers.

Bitcoin surges to record above $2,500

"I think it's mostly to do with the fact they may have ended the ongoing political stalemate over scaling may be over," Andrew Keys, head of global business development at blockchain software developer ConsenSys, told CNBC in an email. Blockchain is the technology behind bitcoin that many expect can have broader, transformative applications in industries such as financial services.

Bitcoin rose more than 10 percent to an all-time high of $2,537.16, after earlier in the day topping $2,400 for the first time, according to CoinDesk. The latest move marks a more than $500 gain since Saturday, when the digital currency first topped $2,000.

That brings bitcoin's 5-day gain to just over 40 percent and its gain for May so far to 88 percent. Bitcoin has more than doubled this year, up more than 160 percent with Wednesday afternoon's surge.

The scaling agreement is a significant step forward for proponents of the digital currency.

Fifty-six companies around the world and 83 percent of bitcoin miners supported the "Bitcoin Scaling Agreement," according to the Digital Currency Group. The document lays out an upgrade that should increase bitcoin's transaction capacity.

Brian Kelly, CEO of BKCM and a CNBC contributor, said the market sentiment was most important for bitcoin prices.

"This upgrade is needed because more applications can be built on top of bitcoin and more value can be added to bitcoin," he said. Kelly manages a fund focusing on digital currencies.

Trade denominated in Korean won also increased a share of total volume — up from single digits Tuesday to more than 12 percent Wednesday, according to CryptoCompare.

To be sure, bitcoin is a highly volatile asset, and analysts remained cautious that the Digital Currency Group's agreement sounded the all-clear for the currency.

Alex Sunnarborg, a research analyst at CoinDesk, pointed out that "not everyone is on board" with the scaling agreement as they felt it was rushed.

Growing momentum vs. traditional assets
Regardless, the digital currency is gaining more attention in the U.S., especially from high-profile institutional investors.

Jeffrey Gundlach, CEO of DoubleLine Capital, tweeted Tuesday that there could be a connection between bitcoin's surge this year and the drop in the Shanghai composite stock index. The theory is that Chinese looking for investments outside of a weakening yuan have turned to the digital currency.

Chinese yuan-denominated trade volume in bitcoin shrank in the last few months after Beijing began investigating the digital currency exchanges, while the local stock market came under increased regulation. But the Shanghai composite, down 0.4 percent year to date, isn't the only global asset that's fallen while bitcoin has more than doubled in price.

Kelly and other analysts expect bitcoin can one day replace traditional safety investments such as gold.

Digital currency enthusiasts also see great value in the blockchain technology that supports bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies like ethereum. Some see ethereum as a potential structure for a decentralized, next-generation internet.

Also known as ether, the bitcoin rival has run more than 2,300 percent higher this year. Bitcoin itself has gained more than 150 percent over that time.

"That's what people are starting to realize. It was digital gold," Kelly said. Now, "it's more than digital gold."

A “Molecular Condom” Could Be the Future of Male Contraception

"In a paper published last week in PNAS, researchers at UC Berkley have revealed a new possibility for male contraception: disabling the sperm cell from developing sufficient energy to puncture the wall of the egg.

This is done by obstructing CatSper, the ion channels that allows calcium to flow into sperm and give it a ‘power kick’. CatSper open when the sperm enters a cloud of progesterone close to the ovum, which triggers the sperm tail to change their movement from waggling (for swimming to the egg) to drilling (to penetrate it)..."

FamilyHow Cellphones Can Cause Brain Tumors And Trigger Chronic Disease by gabonsky(op): 9:20pm On May 23, 2017
MASSIVE Increase in Your Exposure to This Non-Native EMF
According the WHO, the average background radiation worldwide in 2000 was less than 1 microwatt per centimeter squared. I realize most of you are not familiar with this measurement but it is the standard energy measurement for microwave radiation in the U.S. The important point is that it was LESS THAN 1 microwatt per centimeter squared literally 17 years ago.

This is why it is so important to keep your phone in airplane mode when you aren’t using it. But it is not only your phone; it is also your Wi-Fi router that can easily push levels over 500 to 1,000 microwatts per centimeter squared. So, ideally, you will want to keep your Wi-Fi off whenever possible, and certainly at night. The concern about this massive and relatively recent increase in this EMF exposure is largely related to its ability to generate peroxynitrite, which I discuss in more detail in the next section.

Peroxynitrite at the Heart of Cellphone Damage
Peroxynitrite is an unstable structural ion produced in your body after nitric oxide is exposed to superoxide. This complex chemical process begins with exposure to low-frequency microwave radiation from your cellphone, Wi-Fi and cellphone towers.

The process begins when low-frequency microwave radiation activates voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCC), producing calcium inside your cells and mitochondria.36 Nitic oxide is dependent on the presence of calcium to activate. With additional calcium present, nitric oxide is then activated in the cells.

Nitric oxide is a substance present in all vertebrates, and helps to control blood flow, neural activity and clotting.38 While it has many health benefits, it can become destructive when superoxide molecules, an ionized oxygen molecule, is released during pathological change, such as a stroke or muscle injury.

This reaction between nitric oxide and superoxide produces peroxynitrites, believed to be one root cause for many of today’s chronic diseases.40 Nitric oxide is the only molecule in your body produced at high enough concentrations to outcompete other molecules for superoxide and is a precursor for peroxynitrite.

Peroxynitrite in Your Body
Once formed, peroxynitrite reacts relatively slowly with biological molecules, making it a selective oxidant. Inside your body, peroxynitrites modify tyrosine molecules in proteins to create a new substance, nitrotyrosine and nitration of a structural protein.42

These changes from nitration are visible in human biopsies of atherosclerosis, myocardial ischemia, inflammatory bowel disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and septic lung disease.43 Significant oxidative stress from peroxynitrites may also result in single-strand breaks of DNA.

This pathway of oxidative destruction triggered by low-frequency radiation emitted from mobile devices may partially explain the unprecedented growth rate of chronic disease since 1990.45 This, truly, is a FAR greater concern than brain tumors, when it comes to the hazards of cellphones.

Information from the scientific literature reveals a dramatic acceleration in a single generation in the prevalence of a long list of diseases. Once you understand that cellphones can contribute to these chronic diseases — not just brain tumors — you may be more apt to take a few precautions to limit your exposure.

Although the major health threats continue to be cardiovascular disease, cancer and infections, it should be noted that the following list of conditions often create significant challenges in the lives of those who suffer. Some of these diseases were not even public knowledge prior to 1980.

Protect Yourself and Your Family From Long-Term Health Damage
While cellphone use is ubiquitous, and there’s no turning back now, there are strategies you can use to protect yourself from RF radiation emitted from these devices. Remember, your cellphone, portable phone, Wi-Fi router and modem are the primary devices in your home emitting microwave radiation consistently.

To protect yourself and your family, get in the habit of using these strategies regularly. Cell damage builds over time. It may feel safe to use your devices as you always have since you don’t experience the health effects immediately, but it definitely is not.

• Keep the phone away from your head
Consider moving your cellphone away from your head when it’s turned on or the Wi-Fi, data or Bluetooth are enabled. You may do this by using a selfie-stick, speaking on the speaker phone or using a headset. Short conversations and texting more than talking also reduce your exposure.

• Increase your distance from RF-emitting devices
The closer the device, the more radiation you absorb. Find a way to transport your phone other than you pants pocket or bra, and avoid keeping your phone and tablets in your bedroom while you’re sleeping.

• Turn off your Wi-Fi routers
When they aren’t in use, such as at night, turn your Wi-Fi, modem and cellphone off. Many routers can be linked with an inexpensive remote, making the process simple and easy.

• Spices may reduce damage
Researchers have discovered certain spices may help prevent or repair damage from peroxynitrites.47,48 Spices rich in phenolics, specifically cloves, rosemary, turmeric, cinnamon and ginger root exhibited some protective capacity against peroxynitrite-induced damage.

However, while this is good news, it is not a reason to ignore strategies that reduce your exposure to electromagnetic radiation, since your home is not the only place you are at risk. Any public venue that hosts Wi-Fi or has a cellular tower nearby increases your exposure to microwave radiation.

Some of the most important steps I cannot report on yet as I am in the process of evaluating shielding EMF remediation strategies, such as Faraday canopies for beds and EMF-shielding paint. Once I complete my analysis I will report on it. One thing I am certain of, though, is that the hundreds, or more likely thousands, of devices that you can attach to your phone do nothing to reduce this radiation exposure. They fail miserably in blocking this energy.

They may have some biological benefit in mediating the way this energy interacts with your body, but I would not delude myself into believing this is sufficient and fail to adopt the proactive protective measures described above.

Science/TechnologyStudents Made A Car That Gets A Staggering 2,713 Miles Per Gallon by gabonsky(op): 9:10pm On May 23, 2017
Extreme Fuel Efficiency
While electric vehicles (EVs) are steadily gaining ground, the majority of the cars on the road today are still gas-powered. Gas prices, however, aren’t exactly getting cheaper. So, while we work towards transitioning from fossil fuel-based vehicles to cleaner alternatives, it certainly helps to find ways to make the cars we have now more fuel efficient. Students from the Université Laval might just have a solution.

As an entry for this year’s Shell Eco-marathon Americas, the Laval students developed a prototype vehicle that could run for 2,713 miles per gallon (mpg) on a Detroit, Michigan test track. Their vehicle’s outstanding performance landed them this year’s top trophy. The competition gives students a chance to design vehicle concepts that maximizes efficiency using various fuels, including everything from gasoline to hydrogen fuel cells.

“In winning the overall competition, Université Laval defeated 114 other rivals vying to see whose vehicle could travel the farthest distance on the equivalent of a gallon of gas,” according to a press release for the event. While the Laval team’s achievement was no small feat, it wasn’t able to outperform last year’s champion car from the University of Toronto — which covered an astounding 3,421 mpg.

A Renewable Future
Better fuel efficiency could translate to less fossil fuel vehicle consumption. While this could count as a win for the environment, fossil fuels remain one of the leading contributors to climate-warming emissions. As such, doing away with them completely is a the ultimate goal.

While it may feel like it, it’s not an impossible task: over the past months, fossil fuels are losing value in terms of price, and seeing reduced efficiency compared to their renewable counterparts. EVs, while still only covering a relatively small share of the automobile industry, are set for a major take over. The increased interest from veteran automakers like Volkswagen, Chevrolet, and Honda is a testament to the future of EVs. And soon, they may not even be the only alternatively fueled vehicles available: one automaker in China is working on a car that runs on solar power.

TravelHere's What To Do When Your Ears Get Clogged On A Plane by gabonsky(op): 10:46pm On May 21, 2017
Between the jet lag, dry air, and muscle-cramping seating in coach, flying can really do a number on your health. But one of the most common body complaints fliers experience tends to go overlooked or be blown off as no big deal: clogged or plugged ears.

The proper term is “ear barotrauma,” which pretty accurately describes the pain and discomfort the condition typically causes. This complaint isn’t just a passing annoyance. Besides starting your vacation or business trip on a particularly sour note, it can also lead to some pretty serious complications, too.

To understand what’s behind that clogged sensation, you’ll need a quick anatomy lesson. Your ear is divided into three sections: the outer ear, the middle ear (which houses the eardrum), and the inner ear. The middle ear is connected to the back of the nose and upper throat via a passageway called the eustachian tube, whose job it is to stabilize the air pressure levels between your nose and ear.

“Our eustachian tubes open and close multiple times a day, but the passageway is so tiny that we don’t really notice it as long as it’s moving properly,” says Ana Kim, MD, an otolaryngologist at ColumbiaDoctors Midtown and associate professor of otolaryngology—head and neck surgery at Columbia University Medical Center in New York.

“When we’re flying, however, there’s a rapid change in the barometric [air] pressure, which causes a collapse of the eustachian tubes and interferes with the normal air flow from the nose to the ear,” explains Kim. Getting on a plane while you’re sick with a cold or other head infection that triggers nasal congestion makes those changes in air pressure even worse.

“If you have an active ear or sinus infection, you’re taking away what little volume of air you have [in the Eustachian tube] by flying, which could cause a lot of pain,” says Kim. Gwen Stefani experienced this a few weeks ago when she hopped a flight while fighting a cold and ended up with a ruptured ear drum due to changes in cabin pressure, boyfriend Blake Shelton told Entertainment Tonight.

To re-stabilize the air pressure levels and prevent uncomfortable aching, you’ll need to open up those tubes. Here are three things to try if it happens to you.

Pinch your nose and blow—gently!
To get your ears to “pop,” you can try closing off your nose and mouth, then gently forcing the air into the middle ear. Do not—repeat, do not—blow too hard. Doing so can actually rupture the membranes of the cochlea (the organ that allows us to hear), says Kim. And when that happens, fluid can leak out, causing hearing loss, nerve damage, dizziness, or a type of ringing in the ear called tinnitus.

Move your mouth muscles
Call it a good reason to keep a pack of gum in your carry-on: moving the muscles of your jaw by chewing, yawning, or swallowing water or another beverage can help reopen the eustachian tubes, says Kim. If you’re traveling with a baby or toddler and you suspect (or they tell you) their ears are plugged up, have them sip juice or water or use a pacifier to get those mouth muscles going.

Take a decongestant
Medications like Afrin shrink blood vessels and reduce inflammation in your nasal cavity. Since it works right away, you can take it 10 minutes before takeoff to prevent your ears from clogging in the first place. One word of caution: Although these meds are over-the-counter, people who have heart problems or are pregnant shouldn’t take them unless they’ve cleared it with their doctor

If the clogging doesn’t go away . . .
Most of the time, the pressure should clear up a few hours after you’re back on land, she says. If it lingers longer—into the following day, for example—you might have a buildup of fluid behind your ear that isn’t ventilating properly. For that, you’ll probably want to see a doctor. Not only will you experience some temporary hearing loss (everyone will sound like you’re listening to them underwater) you could put yourself at risk of a serious infection.

PoliticsArewa Youths Insist On North Producing Next President In 2019 by gabonsky(op): 8:54am On May 20, 2017
Arewa youths in the 19 Northern States of Nigeria have said that, if the health challenges facing President Muhammadu Buhari eventually precludes him from contesting the 2019 election for a second term in office, nothing would stop the North from producing the President.

The officials of the Arewa Youth Forum (AYF) after a meeting in Kaduna yesterday, said, “It has come to our notice that some individuals are preparing to cause chaos in the country using the state of health of President Muhammadu Buhari as a launching pad.”

The National President of AYF, Alhaji Gambo Ibrahim Gujungu in a statement after the meeting of the group pointed out that the insinuations, body language and utterances of some politicians of recent, especially since President Buhari started experiencing some health challenges, has left much to be desired, saying, “we want to point out the person of Femi Fani Kayode that his behavior and Utterances against Mr. President as a person, his administration and the Northern elders of recent should worry all Nigerians of goodwill not matter which part of the country the person hails from.”

PoliticsNational Assembly To Pass Bill On Whistle Blowing Soon by gabonsky(op): 9:15pm On May 19, 2017
Rep. Abiodun Olasupo (APC- Iseyin/Iwajowa/Kajola/Itesiwaju Federal Constituency) says the bill on whistleblowing is at an advanced stage of being passed by the National Assembly.

Olasupo also said the National Assembly was working hard to ensure that all enabling laws protect the identity of whistleblowers and strengthen the principle.

The federal lawmaker spoke in Iseyin during a routine tour of his constituency to inaugurate projects and brief constituents.

“You should not be surprised that all the measures used in the anti-corruption crusade today were developed by President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

“The Jonathan administration developed the policies of whistleblowing, Bank Verification Number (BVN), Treasury Single Account (TSA) but lacked the political will to implement them.

“You can see that the implementation by President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration is bringing the desired results,’’ he stated

Reacting to the N125 billion National Assembly Budget for 2017, he said that the budget was only N10 billion above that of 2016.

The lawmaker stated that the increment in the budget was not limited to the National Assembly alone, but also affected the State House, Judiciary, Nigeria Customs Service and other parastatal agencies.

“When the 2017 Appropriation Bill is signed into law by the president or Acting President, it would be accessible to all and you will see that it was increased across board.

“When you look into the budget and do the analysis properly, I am sure you will believe that the National Assembly is one of the most poorly funded arms of this government.

“For the first time in the history of the nation, the eighth National Assembly made the details of the budget public and you will see a budget of economic recovery.

“The old, present and future National Assembly members should know that legislatures the world over cannot win popularity contest when it comes to budgeting,’’ he said.

Appraising the implementation of the 2016 budget, Olasupo said it was the first time the budget of the country passed the threshold of N1 trillion in terms of capital expenditure.

He said that apart from this, funds were judiciously used inspite of the nation’s low-income.

The lawmaker also said that it was the first time in a long while there was a budget of less than 30 percent capital expenditure and over 60 percent recurrent expenditure.

“This is a very good development for the nation and I am sure that by the time
the 2017 budget is fully implemented, we would be a little over 40 percent in terms of capital expenditure.

“When Buhari came on board, he said that he was looking forward to seeing more of the budget going for capital expenditure and lower recurrent expenditure,’’ he said.

Olasupo, however, dismissed the speculations that there was a face-off between the executive and the National Assembly.

“It might look like we are antagonising each other but that is what we are meant to be doing. It is out of this that we put many things in the right shape.

“The separation of power principle entrenched in the constitution encourages checks and balances.

“What the people are seeing is democracy in action. This will not affect the development of the nation.

“ Nigerians should not be afraid, we are doing what the law empowers us to do,’’ he said.

The lawmaker, however, promised not to relent in giving the quality representation required of him in the National Assembly.

PoliticsBoko Haram Traps Starving People In Nigeria, UN Warns by gabonsky(op): 8:47pm On May 18, 2017
Two million people are teetering on the brink of famine in northeastern Nigeria but efforts to reach some are being thwarted by Boko Haram jihadists, the UN’s food agency said Thursday.

More than 20 million people across Nigeria, South Sudan, Somalia and Yemen, are in areas hit by drought and are experiencing famine or are at high risk of famine in “the biggest crisis we have seen in the past 50 years”, said Denise Brown, emergency coordinator for the UN’s World Food Programme.

“While they are all in difficulty, northeastern Nigeria is one that has got under our skin at WFP,” she added.

Around 1.8 million people in the area are classified “as being on the edge of the (famine) cliff”, she said, and WFP is managing to provide support of some sort to 1.2 million of them — though it desperately needs more funds.

“But there are several hundred thousand people who are up in three areas in Nigeria on the borders with Niger and Chad that we just can’t get to because of the active conflict,” she said, putting the figure at around 600,000 people.

Boko Haram launched an uprising in northeastern Nigeria in 2009 and began eyeing border areas in neighbouring Chad, Niger and Cameroon. The conflict in the area of Lake Chad has left 20,000 people dead since then.

– Funding gap hits children –
“We’ve seen hundreds of thousands of people displaced from border areas in Niger, Chad and Cameroon, and millions from Nigeria. The epicentre may be northeastern Nigeria but it’s become a very big regional challenge,” Brown said.

The World Food Programme said it needed $230 million (207 million euros) between now and October to stave off a famine in Nigeria.

Brown admitted the Rome-based food agency had not been prepared for a crisis on this scale there.
“It’s a middle-income country, it’s the richest country in Africa. We didn’t think we’d have to apply our emergency capabilities here”.

“The first time we went up there was a year ago. We were not prepared for the level of human suffering that we saw,” she said.

It was local communities, “some of the poorest people on the planet”, that worked as “first responders” when the crisis hit.

The agency’s famine-prevention programme targets as standard all children from six to 23 months, making sure they are screened with the help of UNICEF and given special food.

But in Nigeria it was not just babies and toddlers at risk.

“When we saw the level of malnutrition in older children, we expanded that to all children under five-years old, but because of the lack of resources we’ve had to scale it back again,” she said.

The cut to food aid also comes as the country hits the “lean season”, a period of the year when families naturally have less to eat.

Jobs/VacanciesWrite A Resume That Gets You Hired: 6 Common Resume Mistakes To Avoid by gabonsky(op): 11:27am On May 16, 2017
Six mistakes you need to avoid

You've heard all the standard rules: ditch the objective statement; double and triple check for typos; lose the "References Available" line. A good resume avoids the failings from the typical list of blunders, but that alone won't keep you out of the dreaded trash pile.

When it comes to writing a great resume, there are six mistakes you need to avoid if you want a document that sets you up for success and hones in on your unique personal brand.

1. It's not about you.
This is the hardest pill for most people to swallow. Your resume is about you in that it tells your career story. The focus on you ends there.

It is critical that you keep in mind who your audience is: a prospective employer, a potential investor, future clients, etc. Your resume serves as the proof of your worth, not a professional biography. It's a quick and dirty time capsule of your contributions and the work you've done that's made you who you are today. Think of it as your greatest hits from the past 10 years.

The person reading it needs to know what you can do for them, how you can help their bottom line, and how you'll fit into their mission.

Your resume is personal, which is why it is easier to have someone objective write it for you. Too much attachment can get in the way, so you must force yourself to be cutthroat and limit what you include.

Every item you place on your resume should be about the value you deliver and how you've solved problems your audience is facing. You get six seconds to make an impression and you need to make that time count by giving your reader what they need, rather than feeding your ego.

2. Set the tone right from the start.
The first third of your resume needs to capture your unique selling points. You set the tone for the rest of the resume right here and that little bit of personal branding goes a long way. Too many people fill this section with a generic sounding summary that is completely nondescript: experienced salesman; hard-working operations manager; results driven leader.

These statements tell a reader nothing real about you. Basically, it sounds like you Googled how to write a resume and copied and pasted sample statements.

You need to hit the reader with the main reasons you're great at your job, proof of how you've succeeded, and an outline of your areas of expertise. It should explain in no uncertain terms why you're the right person for their business and entice them to keep reading.

A brief two- to three-sentence summary and a short list of hard skills are what you need to nail this section. If you don't, the rest of your resume will get less than a skim.

3. Length matters.
The average attention span is short. People want information in bite-size chunks, and your resume is no different.

In an effort to make sure your document is laser focused on your best assets and isn't overwhelming people with mundane details, set a one-page limit. This will require you to trim the fat and what remains should be all your very best material. That is what you should always be leading with and a shorter resume leaves you no alternative.

4. Remove one particular from your resume vocabulary.
"Responsible for" is a resume killer. It speaks to the bare minimum, hardly a high bar to climb. Starting off sections this way doesn't tell anyone about the work you did--it tells them only what you were supposed to do.

Listing duties is for suckers. No one wants to read a regurgitation of your job description. It provides no substantive proof, and if you are bragging about your responsibilities on a resume, you come off as a simple button pusher.

Instead, showcase ways you were an asset and made a meaningful impact using strong quantifiable details. This gives your work scope and something substantial for people to really grab onto.

5. Repetition = boring.
Most resumes bore HR reps to tears. They sound the same, they look the same, and in some cases, descriptions are copied and pasted from one job to the next. That isn't the way to prove expertise. That's how you make eyeballs glaze over.

If you have a long work history, many of your roles likely overlap. HR is keenly aware of this fact without any reminders from you. Make the smart choice to leverage each position as a way to illustrate something new about your skill set.

Vary your examples to capture all that you can do you, not that you've done the same thing over and over. That doesn't create a sense of mastery. It creates boredom and lack of understanding on your part about how to present your worth.

6. Use bullet points wisely.
The use of bullet points for drawing attention to essential information cannot be overstated. I encourage them in both cover letters and resumes. No one wants to sort through long paragraphs anymore; they just don't have the time.

This, however, doesn't give you the freedom to include as many as you like. When overused, bullets no longer lead the eye around the resume. Stacked together they create a dense area of text and defeat their entire purpose of being.

When it comes to using bullet points for maximum impact stick to this guideline: Your most recent role can include up to four; subsequent roles should have three or fewer.

If you're writing your resume correctly, this shouldn't be a problem. Your bullet points are the supporting evidence for the perception you built at the very beginning of your resume. They are meant to highlight your most standout achievements or contributions, not to cram in every duty and responsibility.

Take these six typical fails and turn them around and not only will you write a stronger resume, but you'll also discover your core value.

Being able to talk about your own work, and understanding what you bring to the table, will benefit you in every aspect of your professional journey.

PoliticsSuspected Herdsmen Attack Niger Community, Kill 21 by gabonsky(op): 6:45am On May 15, 2017
A gang of gunmen suspected to be herdsmen late Saturday attacked Etogi community, Gbara ward in Mokwa local council of Niger State killing 21 people. An eyewitness told The Guardian that the attack was a result of an earlier disagreement between some Fulani youth and members of the affected community, which led to the death of one herdsman.

The herders who maintained a settlement near the community were offered land to farm on the agreement that certain percentage of the proceeds of their business would go to the village head.

However, there was disagreement when the herders failed to remit the agreed percentage this year, while claiming that the land in question now belongs to them, a claim that led to a serious argument, which led to the death of one of the herdsmen.

Enraged by the death of one of them, the herders were said to have mobilised support from their kinsmen elsewhere and launched an attack on the community mosque, when Muslims were observing their early morning prayers.

A source, Malam Mairo Mohammed told our reporter on phone that the attackers killed everybody in the mosque, including the Imam.Women and children who were woken by the commotion were said to have fled to different directions with some of them sustaining injuries in the melee.

The state police command Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana confirmed the report that over 20 people were killed during the assault. He said the attack was a reprisal to the earlier killing of a herder by the villagers.

“The crisis on the death of a herder was managed, but it appears they were not satisfied and decided to retaliate,” DSP Elkana stated. He added that eight people sustained injuries during the attack and are being treated in a nearby hospital.

He, however, disclosed that mobile policemen have been deployed to the affected community, while officers of the Department of State Services and the command’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) were also on ground to protect residents of the area.

Science/TechnologyThe Future Of Flying Cars: Science Fact Or Science Fiction? by gabonsky(op): 9:00pm On May 13, 2017
Uber has shaken up the taxi industry and is trying to put driverless cars on our roads. Now the company aims to have flying ride-sharing vehicles in our skies by 2020.

The Conversation
Uber is not alone in working towards flying cars. But is this realistic, or just marketing hype?

To many of us, the concept of flying cars is synonymous with the future, just like silver jumpsuits and gourmet food in the form of a pill. Those dreams have not yet materialized, so what about flying cars?

How is this a car?
The classic idea of a flying car was just that: a car that could somehow fly.

In fiction, the author Ian Fleming was a fan of flying cars, writing his novel Chitty Chitty Bang Bang around the concept in 1963. He also included a flying car in his James Bond novel (1964) and subsequent film, The Man with The Golden Gun. These concepts are based on a car with wheels that can drive on the road but is also capable of flying when required.

Science fiction writers and directors have often dispensed with the need to have future vehicles ever drive on the road. Instead, the “cars” are simply small aircraft such as the one Anakin Skywalker used in the Star Wars film Attack of the Clones.

The recent flying car announcements vary in type from single-seat, multi-copter drone-type aircraft, to road-style cars that turn into light aircraft and small flying boats that hover above the water.

It would appear that almost any small flying vehicle capable of transporting a person is now referred to as a flying car. But clearly, they are really just a kind of small aircraft.

How safe?
Any potential passenger will want to know: “How safe is this contraption?”

The likely answer right now is “not very safe," as with all early-stage technology. Companies are working feverishly to make their aircraft “safe enough” in the hope of convincing regulators and governments that the vehicles can be entrusted with human lives.

But there are incredible safety challenges. One of the biggest is what to do when things go badly wrong.

With a normal car, you can often just slow to a halt and stop. But a flying car might fall out of the sky, killing not only its occupants but potentially bystanders too.

The Chinese company Ehang is proposing to equip its flying car service in Dubai with a parachute.

This service will apparently take a single occupant from the roof of one Dubai skyscraper to the roof of another.

Should the parachute deploy, it is not clear whether the vehicle will have any way to control where it lands, or how safely.

In the existing aviation industry, much of the mechanics of flying is automated. Given the challenges of a person flying compared to driving a car, and the efforts to reduce human error in aviation, there is even more likelihood of flying cars becoming automated so that no human pilot is needed.

But there will be differences between existing aviation practice and flying cars. Passenger jet air travel owes much of its impressive safety record to improvements in aircraft maintenance procedures and our understanding of failures. It is unlikely that the business case for small flying cars will allow for such rigorous practices.

Instead, flying cars will be less complex than modern jets, and the latest demonstrators show exactly that.

The use of large numbers of small electric motors, such as in the Lilium all-electric aircraft, reduces the maintenance complexity drastically. It also provides an inbuilt measure of redundancy in case one motor fails.
The Lilium electric aircraft.

How fast, how far?
Wouldn’t it be great to avoid the traffic and public transport congestion of our major cities? We think so.

For example, it currently takes 23 minutes to drive the 19km from our offices in Brisbane to the domestic airport when traffic is freely flowing.

If we could fly from our office roof (and there is a pad on our roof that is ideally suited to deploying a flying car), the trip would only take 8 minutes.

We’d get a double boost, first from flying at an average speed of (say) 100kmh, and second by taking the straightest path, a mere 13km.

This example journey is well within the capabilities of the flying cars being demonstrated today.

Of course, it may be that authorities mandate we stick to flight corridors reserved for flying cars, so a direct route is not always an option. These corridors may be strategically located over low-risk areas of land that have minimal population.

How easy?
There are lots of things about flying cars that are hard, but some problems may become easier.

There is a lot more space available for cars when you have access to three dimensions for travel, as long as the navigation challenges are solved.

Using the several hundred meters of space above the ground means you can potentially have a lot less traffic congestion. You also don’t need to build and maintain expensive road infrastructure.

For self-driving flying cars, moving into the sky actually makes some aspects of planning and traffic control easier.

How much?
It is too early to know how the economics of flying cars will work.

Given the huge regulatory hurdles, the safety issues to overcome, and the lack of special infrastructure to support flying cars (such as take-off and landing areas and charging points for the all-electric aircraft), it is difficult to estimate what a trip should cost.

The current non-flying car ride-sharing companies such as Uber appear to be operating at a massive loss.

The price paid by the consumer in an Uber vehicle is reported to be on average less than half the actual cost of the trip, but the company is hoping to recoup some of these costs by implementing driverless cars. Given that there’s even more chance that flying cars will be driverless, maybe the economics will be favorable.

What would a consumer be willing to pay to possibly get to their destination in half the time? There’s at least one famous historical example in Concorde that posed that same question, and had safety issues. Sadly, its supersonic passenger flights are not available any more.

How long before I can fly to work?
There is still so much to do before flying cars can become common. The technology has come a long way, mainly due to the rapid development of drones. But the technology of the flying machine itself is just one part of a very complex system.

Like ground-based self-driving cars, it’s likely that if they ever happen, flying cars will occur in certain priority areas first.

Imagine a cheaper but still expensive option for high-level executives, such as the Dubai proposal.

For the rest of us, we may already be walking around in silver jumpsuits and eating meals in a pill before we get to ride in a flying car.

InvestmentCollaborate With Interpol, Others To Stop MMM – Consultant by gabonsky(op): 7:13pm On May 12, 2017
Analysts in the e-crime space have impressed the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to strengthen its collaboration with security institutions such as Interpol to stop the operations of ponzi scheme, MMM.

They admit that the complex condition under which the company operates would require effective collaborations to be able to clamp down such operations.

According to the Principal Consultant at the e-Crime bureau, Albert Antwi Bosiako, partnerships between Ghanaian regulators and international agencies will facilitate the halt in MMM's operations.

“In terms of going after them if they are not legally registered to operate as a business, Interpol system provides a good platform…there has been a bit of work and certain protocols that different countries could follow and bring the perpetrators to book,” Mr. Antwi Bosiako suggested.

The activities of the ponzi scheme has already commenced in Ghana.

This comes at a time that Nigerian authorities have been facing a tough time controlling the operations in that country.

Already, some 3 million Nigerians are reported to have lost 18 billion Naira to the scheme.
But a statement by the Bank of Ghana on Wednesday, warned the public not to conduct any business with MMM.

The central bank argued that the scheme's operations flout provisions of the Banks and Specialized Deposit Taking Act.

Mr. Antwi Bosiako who is also however says the legality of the scheme in some jurisdictions will require that Ghana courts the assistance of such states to deal with the situation.

“Some of these operations are registered and legally they are active in some jurisdictions so you will also expect some kind of collaboration between the Bank of Ghana and that of other jurisdictions to monitor and eventually bring the activities of these organisations under some control,” he asserted.

About MMM
The ponzi scheme which was founded some twenty-eight years ago in Russia, currently operates in one hundred and eighteen (118) countries including five African countries.

MMM entices people by promising them a 30 percent return after giving out an amount of money to support others.

This, the scheme says is to 'destroy the world's unjust financial system.'

Science/TechnologySolargaps’ New Solar Blinds Shade Windows And Generate Clean Energy by gabonsky(op): 7:24am On May 12, 2017
What if your window blinds could power your home in addition to shading its rooms? That’s the idea behind SolarGaps’ new solar blinds. These smart blinds designed to track the sun can be controlled via an app, and the company says their product will slash energy bills by as much as 70 percent.

SolarGaps’ smart solar blinds, created by Ukrainian inventor Yevgen Erik, could revolutionize how we live our lives indoors, and obtain the energy we consume in our homes. The company says the blinds are extremely efficient can generate 100 watts of power per 10 square feet of a window – enough energy for three MacBooks or 30 LED light bulbs, according to the company

The company also says the installation process is simple enough for homeowners to do themselves using SolarGaps’ instructions – and after the blinds are plugged in, the renewable energy they generate begins to power home devices. Their app allows users to change the angle of the blinds, lower or raise them, or check out how much energy they are generating.

The blinds are made with solar cells from SunPower and come with a 25 year lifespan. The outer part is made with Aluminum. SolarGaps says they’ll work in a wide variety of climates and temperatures, from negative 40 degrees Fahrenheit up to 176 degrees Fahrenheit.

The company also markets their groundbreaking blinds as affordable, and able to generate more electricity than competing smart blinds currently on the market. They’re currently crowdfunding on Kickstarter; a XS Sized Set is $390, 50 percent off the retail price, and measures 36 by 36 inches, or 32 by 36 inches. SolarGaps is also offering small, medium, large, extra large, and extra extra large sizes, as well as two custom bundles.

PoliticsUSAID, UNICEF Tackle Water Shortage, Malnutrition In Northwest by gabonsky(op): 6:46am On May 12, 2017
A girl suffering from severe acute malnutrition is weighed at a Unicef nutrition clinics in the Muna camp in Nigeria.

In a move to provide support for the country’s perennial water shortage, the Mission Director, United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Stephen Haykin has said that over 57 million Nigerians lack access to potable water in Nigeria.

Besides, the Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai and his Bauchi State counterpart, Mohammed Abubakar have commended the USAID in embarking on the project to improve water supply in the two states.

Speaking yesterday at the official launch of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in Kaduna, Haykin said that one million Nigerian children die yearly for lack of drinkable water.

He disclosed that the perennial shortage of water had resulted in USAID’s effort to support the programme aimed at enhancing water supply in the country with $2.5 million to enable Nigerians have access to potable water.

He pointed out that having clean water and sanitation was very essential for the development of a healthy society.Earlier, project Coordinator of WASH, Timeyin Uwejamomere said the water supply project was expected to last for two years through November 2018, adding that it would primarily target urban areas and focus on Bauchi and Kaduna states.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Field UNICEF Office in Katsina, Mrs. Padmavathi Yedla has disclosed that it was a misconception to think that malnutrition was only possible in poor families, stressing that it could exist in rich and wealthy communities.

Yedla said at the Nutrition Budget Tracking Workshop in Kano recently that: “The misconception of malnutrition is that it is only for poor people. But it can also exist in rich countries, if mothers lack adequate knowledge of how to take good care of their children.”

She said the intervention was done to help unhealthy mothers with adequate medical treatment for nourishment.A UNICEF fact sheet had revealed that under-nutrition remained high in Northern Nigeria with about 2.2 million out of the 2.5 million severely malnourished children from that part of the country.

“Over 50 percent child mortality in Nigeria is caused by malnutrition with no fewer than 1200 out of 2600 estimated daily deaths. “Lack of budgetary allocations, delay or non-release of appropriated funds to nutrition hinder sustainable provision of Ready To Use Therapeutic Foods (RUTF) and threatens efforts to save severely malnourished children,” the report stated.

PoliticsNorthern Elders Vow To Defend Buhari Presidency by gabonsky(op): 6:24am On May 12, 2017
• Say detractors exploiting his absence
• Pledge support for ‘genuine’ restructuring
• Yakassai, Mohammed, Momoh urge caution

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) yesterday vowed to resist any move to undermine the current administration on account of President Muhammadu Buhari’s ill health.

Besides, the forum backed “genuine” restructuring of the nation, adding that the north was never at any time opposed to the move. The warning may have been informed by some developments at the seat of power, Aso Rock, which the group described as “attempts to exploit the absence of the president to achieve dubious political goals.” One of these goals is suspected to be the restructuring of the polity.

NEF maintained that the ship of state must keep sailing uninterruptedly until Buhari returns.Rising from its emergency meeting held at the Government House, Kano, the elders noted: “We are aware that attempts are being made to exploit the absence of President Muhammadu Buhari to achieve dubious political goals.

“We, therefore, warn those seeking an undeserved political advantage to desist. The north is conscious of its obligations as well as rights and will discharge and defend same without reservations.”
Briefing newsmen on the outcome of the meeting, the forum’s deputy leader, Wantaregh Paul Unongo, applauded the president for transferring power to his lieutenant in line with the dictates of the 1999 constitution (as amended). He urged Nigerians to keep praying for the quick recovery of the nation’s first citizen.

He pledged the forum’s support for Osinbajo’s acting presidency, advising him to be wary of enemies in the discharge of his duties. His words:”The forum expresses its full support and encouragement for Acting President Osinbajo and urges him to exercise responsibility, as he did in the past with commitment, sensitivity and respect for the constitution. We urge him to ignore mischief makers who seek to pit him against the president or the people whose mandate they both exercise.”

NEF charged the National Assembly to work with Osinbajo. Lauding government on the release of the 82 Chibok girls, the forum, however, maintained that the administration must not rest on its oars until the rest of the captives regain freedom.

Unongo continued: “For the record, the forum wishes to state that the north welcomes honest and sincere discussion on all aspects of our existence and remains available to engage any group to discus and advance the nature of our union. We will resist the attempt to create the false impression that the region is hostile to enquiries into the basics of the nation’s structure and operations.

“We will also join other Nigerians in resisting any attempt to seek sectional and parochial goals outside the constitution and laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“The forum expects that the task of governing the nation will continue uninterrupted until the return of President Muhammadu Buhari. We, therefore, appeal to Nigerians to be cooperative, focused and committed.”

But elder statesman, Malam Tanko Yakassai yesterday reiterated his opposition to calls for the restructuring of Nigeria.Speaking to The Guardian, he urged those behind such an agitation to channel their energies towards ensuring good governance in the polity.

He particularly accused Nigerians of south west extraction of masterminding the agitation with the ultimate desire to ensure the breakup of the country.
Yakassai who was a stalwart of the defunct Northern Elements Progressive Union (NEPU) and national party of Nigeria (NPN) recalled that key leaders of the south west had never hidden their disdain for the northern part of Nigeria right from their days in the defunct Action Group (AG) in the 60s.

According to him: “ I have always suspected the motive behind such clamour. The whole idea is to deny the north its God-given advantage of population and landmass which it has effectively used to earn appreciable allocation from the Federal Government. Those behind it are not interested in Nigeria ‘s unity and progress.

“Can you tell me who among them have come out to tell us how the restructuring will look like? Anybody hiding under such agenda knows that it would not be acceptable to Nigerians. But this is the beauty of democracy. Anybody is free to voice their opinion.”

He, however, distanced himself from the northern elders who met in Kano, saying they belonged to the defunct Northern Progressive Congress (NPC). “They have agenda that is anti-people. I have never related with them all my life. But I understand their concern on the issue of restructuring of Nigeria,” Yakassai who is a strident critic of Buhari noted.

A former Minister of Information, Prince Tony Momoh warned those trying to create unnecessary division between President Buhari and his deputy under the guise of restructuring or the state of health of the president to desist in the interest of the country, peace and unity.

He noted that restructuring should not be used to politicise the state of health of President Buhari.Momoh, who is also a founding member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) while reacting to the development yesterday said the Buhari administration is one and there is nothing like restructuring taking place in his absence .

According to him, “Restructuring is a constitutional matter and nobody can achieve it behind the scene. In the first instance Nigeria has not agreed on any type of restructuring. I have made a proposal on how we should restructure and others have made theirs. That Buhari is away does not mean some people can pressurize his vice to start restructuring process.”
He said some Nigerians were just looking for what to comment on. “I need to clarify the fact that the president does not envy his vice and neither does the vice envy his boss’s position. I therefore do not see the reason for tying the issue of restructuring to the absence of Buhari.”

Reacting, Second Republic Minority Leader, Dr. Junaid Mohammed described the call for the restructuring of the country as unconstitutional. He accused those behind such an agitation as “professional agitators” who have no inkling into what they are up to in their demands for the restructuring of the country.Saying the north is ready to confront any group calling for the breakup of the country, he maintained that the north could not be cowed into submission by blackmailers keen on using the restructuring agenda as a bargain tool.

Science/TechnologyHow To Develop, Transfer Technology In Nigeria by gabonsky(op): 11:21am On May 11, 2017

Nigerian scientists have unveiled how to develop and transfer technology in the country even as they called for the integration of African Traditional Medicine (ATM) or Traditional Medicine Practice (TMP) into Primary Health Care (PHC) services and curricula of schools from nursery to university level

The scientists at an inaugural workshop organized by Ofure (Pax) Integral Research and Development Initiative (OFIRDI), formerly known as Africa Centre for Integral Research and Development (ACIRD) tagged “Pax Africana” identified the challenges of technology development and transfer in Nigeria.

These they said include: Low funding of research and development activities in Nigeria; General apathy for made-in-Nigerians goods/technologies and high tastes of Nigerians for foreign goods including foreign technologies; Low level of awareness creation on the part of the research institutions; lack of technical and financial capacities by the research institutes to further develop the research findings into acceptable products in the market; and inadequate Information Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructures and low level of development of available ones for information dissemination.

The theme of the workshop is Integral Research in Health, Education, Social Innovation and Law: Lessons From The Pax Herbals Project In Ewu. The scientists include: Director of Pax Africana/Pax Herbal Clinics, Rev Fr Anselm Adodo; Director General of the Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi (FIIRO) Lagos, Prof. Gloria Elemo; Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Bioresources Development Group (BDG), Prof Maurice Iwu; former Chairman, Lagos State Traditional Medicine Council, Dr. Bunmi Omoseyindemi; Consultant physician at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Ikeja, Dr. Clara Dawodu; Director General of the Nigerian Natural Medicine Development Agency (NNMDA), Sam Oghene-Etatuvie; and former Head, Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics, University of Ibadan, Prof. David T. Okpako.

The scientists, however, recommended the way forward in developing technology in Nigeria. They said government should enact a policy to make it compulsory for government to purchase made-in-Nigeria goods especially MSMEs products; ban importation of some items that are produced by the local Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to protect the local industries; and legislate the use, by MSMEs, of appropriate technologies developed locally and specify sanctions for defaulters.
The scientists also want launch the compendium in all the 774 local government areas in Nigeria with active involvement of the organised private sector; government institutions, news media (both private and government) including radio, television and print media.

Elemo said the Institute offers technology transfer training in over 25 different technologies on weekly basis. She said the objective is to transfer technologies and projects that could be commercialised to entrepreneurs and investors in general. Elemo said FIIRO pioneered the research work on the upgrading of local technologies on the production of cassava-based foods in Nigeria. The FIIRO DG said Nigeria could save N126 billion yearly from the importation of wheat flour if it is made mandatory that 20 per cent of cassava flour is added to bread and other confectioneries produced and marketed.

Elemo also decried a situation where the country spends less than 0.01 per cent of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on research and development (R&grin). She said the success of a nation’s economy therefore depends on the productivity and extent of its R&grin endeavours.

Omoseyindemi said the Alma Ata declaration in 1978 specifically said that mobilization of traditional healing system is the only way to make health for all a reality; therefore, it must be integrated with PHC.

The trained physician and Traditional Medicine Practitioner (TMP) said collaboration with health workers, TMPs and community leaders is one of the ways to improve health and move the PHC forward in communities. He said a mutual referral system could promote good collaboration and benefit the TMPs, the supporting agency and the community.

Omoseyindemi said there is need for to reorganize and redirect the PHC for lasting improvement in health care at the community level by properly integrating the indigenous herbal and healing practices into the PHC in line with the National Health Act of 2014. “If we wish to make African herbal medicine a practical component of ‘Primary Health Care in Nigeria’ or to incorporate ‘African medicine’ in the curricula of colleges of medicine and pharmacy, in my view, the programme must be rooted on the basic principles of traditional African medicine, an outline of which I have attempted in this presentation.”

Okpako said: “If we wish to make African herbal medicine a practical component of ‘Primary Health Care in Nigeria’ or to incorporate ‘African medicine’ in the curricula of colleges of medicine and pharmacy, in my view, the programme must be rooted on the basic principles of traditional African medicine, an outline of which I have attempted in this presentation.”

Iwu said: “We don’t have the knowledge of management of science. Research institutes should be product-driven place. How can we talk of technological development when the universities are starved of funds? We don’t have a patent office but a patent registry. A patent office will employ chemists, biologists and other scientists.”

Adodo said OFIRDI is about research, both process-wise and also substantively, that leads to social, if not also technological, innovation in Africa, drawing from all corners of the globe, while remaining grounded in African soils. He said integral research-to-innovation model was designed to bridge the divide between academic research and pragmatic social innovation, invariably set within a particular societal context.

Dawodu called for incorporation of ATM in curricula of schools even as she has developed various models to achieve that. Oghene-Etatuvie said: Our practice deals more with the traditional practice area. We are not interested in isolation and characterisation of the active substance. We want to do it the way of traditional practice. To facilitate this, we do a lot of training for the practitioners, but our trainings have been limited these days, due to inadequate funding.

“Our research focuses on malaria prevention, focusing on herbs with scientifically-proven anti-plasmodium agents, while promoting herbal extracts with insecticide-treated nets for the management of malaria.

“Government is interested in local production of herbal products; but the challenge is how to make raw materials available. Many practitioners go into the bush to source for these materials.”
