I have been a regular guest on NL for long and have been following posts, but i have to register cos i need help on this issue and i am convinced NL is the best solution for it.
Though i drive but I am about to own my first personal car. I have budget of 250k maximum for this.
I'm looking for a Nigerian fairly used (surely) decent car that can serve me for some time with little or no issues at least. Am not a frequent traveller so the car will be mainly used around the town, though travelling might come in once a while (maybe once in a month) and since i earn very little for now (around 20k a month), i need you to suggest me a good car make/model i could get naija fairly used that could serve its purpose at this price range, also with less fuel consumption
I beg u please, I will really appreciate a sincere answer from mature, experienced people with no insults. I know i am not rich, so i cant increase the budget and i wish i could get a car dat wont send me into the mechanic workshop on daily basis and take away the little income, the type that you will move 10 mins and top Engine oil, another 10 mins and u top The radiator.
What brand and model will u suggest at this price range please. (Apart from Golf 2) Thanks in advance. Your location? |

@Nonso. I did forgot to include that fact. Vehicles fitted with ECT( engine coolant temperature) sensor, should never be removed. They should be replaced, if they've failed.
Forget about the Nigerian mechanics mentality, telling people to remove their cars thermostat (ECT), just because the car was brought from another different (cold) whether.
Thanks for the reminder Nonso. No one removes the ECT sir. What the remove is the mechanical thermostat that was supposed to restrict the flow of coolant until it reached a specified target temp before flow is permitted.
Also what is also done is the fans are connected directly to ignition so the fans stay on as long as the engine is running. |

ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS)
In automobile, the ABS is an anti-lock braking system or anti-skid braking system which is designed to help drivers maintain some steering stability (or retain steering control) and avoid skidding while braking. Succinctly, ABS is a life safety technology in a vehicle while braking heavily. It prevents the tyres from locking up (stop rotating) when the brakes are applied ( in most cases) suddenly and hard.
BENEFITS OF ABS TO DRIVERS
(1) A vehicle suddenly veers in front of you, forcing you to brake and swerve.
(2) An animal jumps into the road and you must brake and steer to avoid it.
(3) Bad weather makes the road slippery, making wheels lock more likely when you must brake to stop.
FUNCTIONS OF ABS IN CARS

Vehicle manufacturers over the years have modified vehicles to be more fuel efficient, by incorporating various types of technological strategies, ranging from cylinder deactivation systems (on Honda, Ford, "V" engine configurations); VVT-i(variable valve timing ignition) systems; and turbo chargers.
If your car has either of the above installed fuel efficient systems, and your car's fuel efficiency is poor, you probably need to check the following:
1. Engine air filter. Clogged filters distorts a car air fuel ratio negatively, making a car's computer system atomizes more fuel in the combustion chambers
2. Engine idling. Avoid excessive idling of the engine, after start-up, or in traffic. This wears your engine more, and consumes more fuel.
Put off the engine when not in use.
3. AC system. If you're the one that regularly turns on your car's AC system, know that the AC system, adds more load on the engine when the compressor is engaged. Want to use the AC system, and you're worried about fuel issues?
**open your car's windows if you'd parked the car in the sun, before turning in the AC. This would reduce the tremendous amount of work the AC system does, and exerts in your AC system before cooling.
**avoid parking your car in the sun. Look for a shady area.
4. Avoid aggressive driving. When you drive aggressively, it's proportional to increased fuel usage.
Avoid sudden brake applications, and sudden takeoffs.
5. Under inflated. Under inflated tyres increases a car's rolling resistance, which is always translated to increased load on the engine, and subsequently a safety concern for the driver and passengers.
Ensure all tyres are uniformly gauged according to manufacturer's standard.
6. Intake air ducts. All air intake ducts in the engine bay should all be checked regularly to avoid air leaks. A leaky sir duct, falsely commands a car's computer system yo atomize more fuel, thereby affecting your consumption.
7. Spark plugs. Worn out spark plugs would always affect a car's consumption rate. If your plugs are worn, it takes tremendous energy and time for the spark to be ignited, and travel straight down to the combustion chambers, to cause a major ripple effect necessary for your car's dynamics.

I only changed one of the catalyst converter that had fried and straitened nets inside. Its the middle one. The car makes a loud sound before its moves from gear 1 to 2 now, more like its dragging. My oga, please help your boy. How do i remedy this. I just hope the bank 1 sensor is not damaged because the cable was folded in the process of removing the exhaust. it's a v6 engine, 1 catalyst down, 1 to go. (replace the one near the firewall). Check the entire exhaust for Man made restrictions. |

is it that the other AC gas (usually green cylinder)from the normal ac mechanics are bad?? and what is the difference between them and Harp gas and the rest. How do you measure out the right quantity without using a scale? Where is the refrigerant made? Is it a reputable company that makes it?
The smaller cans help people without a scale to recharge with closer accuracy. |

thanks fpor your swift response Best gas in the nigerian market is Harp Gas and it is made in England. It comes in 340gramms cans (net weight)
You will require 24oz (onces) of refrigerant according to the chart below. Which is about 680g meaning you will need approximately 2cans. Of harp gas.

PLEASE my Toyota Camry 2000 v6 engine came up with error code P0446 and was making a loud noise when rev on a spot. The guy that checked it said we should change the catalyst as there is nothing in it again. This was changed on Saturday but am still not satisfied with the sound. this morning now, the CEL came up and i scanned a it gave error code P0420. Now am worried. Not the best time to waste money wey no dey. Original problem was evaporative emission system vent p0466.
New error is catalytic converter below thresh hold on bank1.
How many catalysts did you replace?

Car AC chills very well but cuts off intermittently while driving, for instance when you put on the AC it will work then later start blowing hot air and later after some time it will work again but the break is noticeable and one always have to turn it off and on most times so that it can start working again. car is a Camry 2010. Diagnosis required. |
