the piano analogy can stand for any machine used to perform a function. It could be a computer or a car or anything. The point is that the machine is not generating the function, an active will is. When you use your computer or your car for instance, certain functions run in the background which are not necessarily under direct control by you. These functions do not make your machine conscious and if you wanted to stop them you could.


And how exactly does one go about killing himself if not to start by willing it and then proceed to carrying out the necessary actions that will result in his death? In the same way if I wanted to turn off my car engine I first will it and then proceed to actually turn the ignition key to "off"

Do you will your brain to perform..say thermiostatic functions? Do you will your eyes to blink? The brain is just too complex for an analogy to anything man-made.

If it was that simple I would have been a brain surgeon...lol.

Just to even address your sophistry- there are different levels of consciousness-
-Level 1- the brain as an organ
-Level 2- the brain as the mind (your conscious self)

The brain wills itself. Are you controlling your breathing and movements when you are asleep? As an organ (level 1) the brain controls you. Do you think that it you (level 2) that wills your body to shoot andrenaline when ready to fight?

Level 2 is your mind (the result of the brain working with the CNS and the body). You will your brain to do maths calculations and construct poetry.


Mad people are conscious but have lost level 2 or the level 2 is faulty.




In short, your piano/pianist analogy fails because unlike the piano, the brain can will you. It is the very reason you despise atheists. You have been conditioned to believe that only christians can live a truely moral life. Your level 2 cant override the deep conditioning your level one has been given

Exactly my point...the brain will function even when the human is under anaesthesia thus lacks consciousness.

Can the piano play when the pianist is asleep?

A) the piano cannot make any sound (no function) at all without the pianist, the brain controls all the involuntary neccesarry actions required for the body to 'be alive' even with the 'pianist'

B) the pianist can stop the activities of the piano at will, in the case of the human mind it is virtually impossible to wish one's self to death,at the stroke of the whim.

Mr anony: There is a blunder here which is that you are asking me to show you in material terms something that is immaterial.

I'll give you an analogy: Imagine that you are a musician and your brain is a piano. For some reason, we cannot see the pianist but we know that there is a pianist because we can hear the music and see the keys move. suddenly, the piano stops, no more music and no more moving keys. Is it the piano that was generating the music or was it the pianist? Mind you, the piano is still there and all its parts are intact. It is not the piano that is creating the music, rather it is the pianist. The piano is only a tool for making music and once the pianist leaves it, it returns to being an inanimate object.

Compare this to the brain. The brain does not will itself to act, you are in control of your brain. like the piano and the unseen pianist, we only only hear the music (or see the brain light up) once the conscious you leaves the body, all the components of the brain are still intact yet it does not function (like the abandoned piano without a pianist). This is proof that the brain does not generate consciousness rather consciousness is created by an immaterial you using the brain as the tool to create it. In the same way that the piano does not generate music but is the tool used by the pianist to make the songs

But in your analogy you just safely assumed the piano stopped producing music because the pianist stopped playing, what if he is still playing and the cables that connect the keys to the pluckers(or whatever they are called) all cut? Even though his hands still tap the keys will the music still play?

And like I said before you are over simplifying things here,albeit the brain.

Annony please can you give me a real life scenario where consciousness existed when the brain is completely dead.

Mr anony: Let us test your thesis with a simple question:

Can you decide to think about a something and then go ahead to think about it?

If your answer is yes, then it is you who causes brain activity to happen and since you will have to already possess consciousness in order to do that, it cannot be said that your brain activity causes consciousness.

If on the other hand, your answer is no i.e. you cannot decide to do anything then you neither know nor can control what your brain does, you cannot therefore be said to be conscious.

So my friend, I'm afraid you are wrong here. Brain activities do not create consciousness.

Even thinking of brains as computers one notes that the mapping of action potential (Google the term) to function is immaterial in that what it represents is different from it. The inherent problem with Atheism at least when I dabbled into (my personal view) is that it stemmed out a heart filled with rebellion, I believe there are people that are genuinely atheists and not just rebelling against religion.

On another note seeking the source of consciousness is awesome and should be encouraged,till then if you choose to be an atheist be the best atheist that ever lived,on the other hand if you are a theist keep being the best you can be.
