Nairaland GeneralThe Unpopular ₦ Symbol by geniusbami(op):
Jasmine Montgomery, of design consultancy FutureBrand, London, said (in BBC News Magazine of Tuesday, 10 March 2009) that the currency symbol could be a powerful part of the country's brand iconography, a signal of stability and the fact that it is a player on the world stage. The Nigerian currency symbol is the Naira, denoted by a capital letter N with two parallel lines running across it at the centre.

Most often, our text books, from elementary to tertiary education, use foreign symbols in examples, texts and exercises. Local text books are not left out. Most of the software we use in offices, especially accounting packages and MS Excel, readily provide other currency symbols, except the Naira. So, when you are presenting financial statements, for example, you either use the Dollar or none at all.

Recently, I felt I might be the one who is not getting to where it is on my computer, since there are a lot of symbols, most of which are unimportant to me anyway. So, I set out to 'fish out' the Naira symbol, so I can have the proper symbol in financial writings. To my surprise, there was none. But I wasn't going to stop there, I had three options:
1) Create it as a new symbol and go through the harrowing process of inserting symbol each time I need it. The character however, has the problem of not changing when you try to change the type face, or is disproportional.
2) Copy it from the created symbol and paste in a note on the desktop for easier accessibility or
3) Create the Double Strike-through special character in MS Word and keep it somewhere handy as in 2). This also have the problem of formatting the next fonts after it as Double Strike-through.
Whichever way I choose to have my preferred symbol in my work, it slows me down.

Funny enough undecided, I could use the created ₦ symbol on my smart phone, but it takes more character space than any regular character, a whooping shocked 94 character space out of 160. So, when you consider the space shortage, you are compelled to compromise what you want and simply substitute with capital N.

The question then arise, why should this powerful part of the country's brand iconography be so obscure in our daily use?
What part could computer manufacturers operating in Nigeria, phone companies making highest worldwide sales in Nigeria, digital solution providers, etc play to drive this change?

We need to be able to freely access the ₦ on every digital media, like every other symbol. It is our identity.

Thanks man. But I have tried even with a phone that is internet enabled, i have save the settings sent to me for internet by airtel and yet, not successfully subscribed. Wld keep tring anyway.
If you send sms, U will not be subscribed. Do what I did, dial *440*4#, but ensure U do so from your ANDROID phone and have at least, N1,200 airtime balance. It's instant. good luck.

Maxymilliano: This looks like what El-Rufai or Lai Mohammed will sit down and compile, it has a political undertone and should not be construed as the voice of Nigerians, Nigerians yearn for good governance at all levels, equitable distribution of income and improved standard of living, not asset declaration by the FG, Malabu oil deal, conferement of GCON on Adenuga and other craps sited in the original post that can't put food on their tables.
Wannabe Presidential spokes person, can U just take like 10mins to check the dictionary meaning of GOOD and GOVERNANCE? Marry the two and juxtapos ur finding with the import of ur post? It will help U so U won't expose ur 'unknowing' like this to the whole world?

Thank you.
PhonesRe: Etisalat Is In The Game by geniusbami(op): 6:51pm On Nov 23, 2012
Well, it would be unfair on my part if I don't tell U my disappointments with this new Etisalat Flex packages. I posted out of excitement, only to find out that

The ₦300 U pay for Flex 300 doesn't really guarantee U 25 mins + 25 MB + 100sms.

Here's how it works:
If U send 50 out of 100 sms, U only have a value of ₦150 left. If U then make, say, 12 mins 30sec of calls, U will not have anything left to browse, call or send sms.

In other words,
Sms is at ₦3 to all networks or
Calls are at ₦12 to all networks or
Browsing is charged at ₦120 per 10MB.

Draw ur conclusions folks.

Etisalat Easy Flex rocks.
PhonesRe: Etisalat Is In The Game by geniusbami(op): 10:33pm On Nov 20, 2012
U guys don't get it::

When U pay ₦300, U get 25minutes to ALL NETWORKS, 25 MB Data and 100 sms
When U pay ₦500, U get 50minutes to ALL NETWORKS, 50 MB Data and 200 sms
When U pay ₦700, U get 70minutes to ALL NETWORKS, 70 MB Data and 280 sms
When U pay ₦1,000, U get 100minutes to ALL NETWORKS, 100 MB Data and 400 sms

Get it?

Suppose U are on Flex 300, say U call all networks at ₦10/min, when U exhaust 25mins, U still have ₦50 value.
Let's say U send 100 sms to all networks at ₦1/sms; that's cumulative value of ₦350 and U still have 25 MB Data to yourself.

For me, it makes a lot of sense.
PhonesEtisalat Is In The Game by geniusbami(op): 4:04pm On Nov 19, 2012
Competition is very interesting. Thank God consumers (we) are the ultimate beneficiaries.

With Etisalat coming out with these new bundle offers, I think they are out to give Airtel and others a run for their money. Imagine

Package Minutes Data SMS Code
Flex 300 25 25 MB 100 *344*300#
Flex 500 50 50 MB 200 *344*500#
Flex 700 70 70 MB 280 *344*700#
Flex 1000 100 100 MB 400 *344*1000#

Who can beat this?

My brother, I got scared when I see some people advising U to throw ur hard-earned money into the icean of forex... O yes! Ocean! Let me tell U, I spent good money to attend seminars, workshops and all what not, to learn the strategies to make a kill in Forex trading. I invested in Laptop, Monthly Data and even Inverter to guarantee that even NEPA don't affect my controls on my open positions at any time. This was since 2009. What I found out is that THERE'S NOTHING AS WORKING STRATEGY TO KEEP GAINING. Gamble is Forex and Forex is Gamble. Earn today and be ready to lose it along ur capital tomorrow. It's even worse than Baba Ijebu. I had Alpari-UK and Fx-Pro as my brokers, so don't even think I was dealing with those without reputation.

Well, I shouldn't leave telling U without what has been working for me. It will beat ur imagination. Check the l¡nk under this post. I will as well give U more details via the email address U provided.

When U've signed up and seen the great potentials, kindly share ur experience with others on this platform.

Good luck.

No........What's there to celebrate about Nigeria?
There are reasons to celebrate, it only depends on the side you are looking at; On the brighter side, the vultures that have been waiting for the country to plunge into chaos so they can finish what they started when they gave us independence have continued to wait in vain. Should we not celebrate 52 years of nationhood against all odds?

Blackteeth: I already know all that so stop claiming a guru with me. I wouldn't stop every services completely cos there are important apps I use that I would love to obtain update notification as they arrive. Why would I entirely stop all services running? Then whats the essense of using the phone?
Listen man, all this doesn't change the fact that the Android battery life is poor and data consumption is higher compared to Nokia smartphones. Accept that. Simple
Boy, there's essence in what he's saying; listen and learn.
When U've stopped all 'Auto Sync', disabled 3G and killed inactive apps, ur droid still runs at least, 11 apps that U don't have ANY control over: THOSE ARE THE CULPRITS CONTENDING FOR BATTERY and DATA!
PhonesRe: Android Vs Symbian Phones, Which Is Better? by geniusbami(m): 3:04am On Aug 30, 2012
dmainboss: An note that your phone must be rooted to be able to install Droidwall and new ROMs. Many network locked phones are not rooted.

Also when you browse, the amount of data consumed is dependent on the browser settings like image quality, javascript support, compression algorithm and offline setting. You can simply tweak those from your browser to manage your data. Most Nokia phones comes optimised to use less data. Android is normally set to give you an exciting browsing experience with high end graphics and lot more. So you have to set it to consume less.

The point is, comparing and Android phone to a symbian phone is like comparing a laptop to a symbian phone. An Android phone is a "mini laptop". You can't expect a laptop battery to run for 2 days, can you?
Pls, I think ur posts are making sense to me, but pls tell me,

what does it mean for my Samsung S6102 to be rooted and how can I get and install the Droidwall, new ROMs (need more clarifications on this pls) and Google Chrome for Android?

Thanks.

flameforx: talk from now till Sunday,
for me, I don carry BELLE
E be like say Belle dey hungry me carry sef.. A beg droid dey sink my data, in fact it's fast becoming a liability. Imagine:
I'm currently using Samsung Galaxy Young Duos S6102,
1) Data consumption extremely HIGH; 15MB lasts 24hrs max.
2) Fully charged battery doesn't last beyond 18hrs, which I suppose is due to data consumption.
3) Closely related to that, up to 12 apps run in the background; WhatsApp I understand but the rest are absolutely out of my control amd it's turning me nuts.
4) Totally disappointing Task Manager. Every time I try to return to whichever browser it will reload all the pages I was on, and if I minimise the browser long enough, say 20mins, God help me.
5) Internal memory is another BIG disappointment, it's simply impossible to install a few additional apps to those shipped with the phone.
6) Talking of disappointments, the camera is the train.

I honestly don't mind ur suggestions based on experience of Belle pls?
PhonesRe: Android Vs Symbian Phones, Which Is Better? by geniusbami(m): 2:38am On Aug 30, 2012
beethoven: For Android, the data and battery consumption issues are true to an extent but the real problem is that people that use android just go to the android market, install applications that are always connecting to the Internet for updates. Sometimes you'd have a situation where some people would have more than 2 weather monitoring applications installed on their android phones, with all these always connected for updates. If add up other scenarios where u have more than one application for the same purpose, u'd simply zap off your data bundle in no time. Same thing goes for battery, people tend to always have too many applications opened at the same time and left running even when they are not in use. Also u don't have to use 3G unless u really need it, u can change ur network settings to always use Edge. I currently use this strategy and it works fine for me. I've never used more than 500MB of data in a month no matter how many applications I have opened and requesting updates.
Hey guy! See how U talk of 500MB like it's no big deal; that's well over 15MB in a single day. Cost of that will afford U BIS and leave U with good change.
Long and short, android is NOT data efficient at all.

otumfour: take this! and this is coming from an IOS grin dude, ANDROID is 100 times betta than symbian (notice I spelt symbian in lowercase) in every aspect. angry

welcome!
Okay! But comparing Android with Belle, on data consumption, battery life and Task Manager, what would ur verdict be?
I'm actually at the cross-road of choice.
PhonesRe: Android Vs Symbian Phones, Which Is Better? by geniusbami(m): 2:26am On Aug 30, 2012
Blackteeth: I use both Android and Symbian therefore am in position to post in this thread.
Starting with Android, I have discovered that it uses your data bundle excessively. Secondly, the battery life is poor compared to Nokia. Apart from that, no other problems. Android has alot of applications compared to Symbian, therefore you can do much more with it.
Talking about Symbian, Nokia has a very strong battery and hardware better than other brands of phones and therefore lasts longer. Thats the big advantage of Nokia
Here's my personal experience. I'm currently using Samsung Galaxy Young S6102, which is quite good with all my necessary applications, but it has the following grave limitations, which has necessitated the urgent need for another one to make up for the shortcomings:

To enjoy my free weekly data allowance and long battery life I always depend on my wife's Nokia 200. Imagine...
