FreeStuffsNG:There are more girls than boys in almost every Mass Communication department. How many girls convoked with a first class in Physics or Chemical Engineering? |
Cousin9999:That was the reaction by some Nigerians to those in the UK who complained of working conditions and long hours. Those in Nigeria who worked in bakeries and factories laughed and wondered why those in the UK are complaining as if the conditions in the UK could be worse than in Nigeria. Some wondered why office managers left rather than them wey don tey for manual labour in Nigeria. |
The other hilarious aspect of the people lamenting here is that most of them are chronic tribalists! Well, the White man will show you people he created the concept of segregation. The only blacks who should have a say in this are African Americans. They are the ones to fight and deservedly so, not some tribal miscreants from Africa who believe they know the best thing since sliced bread! |
Goke7:The US is the biggest contributor and it is largely geopolitical. Nigeria has great control and influence of the AFDB because it is a major contributor, ditto ECOWAS. The Asian Development Bank has been dominated by the Japanese since its inception. Are Japanese the only Asians? Everything is not race. Money controls the world. Anyone who wants to control the state of affairs should have money. The real world isn't lovey-dovey. I am glad people are realising it, and the earlier they do, the better for them. |
Goke7:She was not an American citizen, if I am not mistaken. And what do you believe by "is better qualified"? The metrics are at the behest of the employer. The employee or supposed employee should do his/her best to impress the employer. https://www.thecable.ng/wto-top-job-okonjo-iweala-takes-american-citizenship/ She was not an American citizen at that time and the US holds the right to have its candidate become the president because of the earlier unwritten agreement in addition to it being the biggest donor. He who pays the piper dictates the tune. The present president, although ethnically Indian, is a naturalised American. |
Goke7:Adebayo wey go Oxford went far with DEI? You see, this is my issue with the policy itself - you have literally made it look like every black person who excels in the abroad did so on the basis of DEI not sheer hard work. You have told the world that we cannot succeed without reduced requirements. How come Chinese who don't have a good command of English score so high in standardised tests? |
Odinwa:First, go through this thread from the beginning to know everything from a Nigerian perspective. Two, start learning the language through whatever medium you can access Three, the bold is good, but it does not lead to residency in the country. Also, being a tourist is different from residing in the country. |
tetralogyfallot:lol It has helped so many people especially if they maintain their ambitious spirit and are ready to change locations if need be. See here: - https://www.nairaland.com/8184851/top-waec-scorers-2009-where - https://www.nairaland.com/7763389/top-jamb-scorers-where-today |
ednut1:The figures are good. Numbers don't lie. Where I got to know without seeing a number is simple: The UK is a white-dominated country, so the natives aka white people predominate the undergraduate students population and should populate the top performers. There is nowhere in the world where non-natives out-number the natives in primary, secondary or university education (undergraduate). It just does not make sense. Our people like making unfounded claims like one Olusola who stated that if we leave the British medical system, it would collapse whereas we don't make up to 15% of Filipinos in the same system. |
bolu96:I think I have narrated it here. Towards my graduation, I knew the entire process of applying for graduate trainee roles from tests to offers. Since I am pretty knowledgeable and can talk about anything, I knew that interviewing wouldn't be a problem. So let me focus on the other aspect - scaling the aptitude tests as I realised that many job seekers fall off of the competition at this stage. I beckoned on my close friend who eventually became the BGS of the entire faculty to practice McKinsey's Problem Solving Test. Out of 10 questions we arranged for ourselves, he got 6/10 while I got 2. That was when I realised that mathematics is essential as I also bought aptitude test packages on Assessment Day UK site. The test makers or companies don't want to know if one studied a math-based course or not. Pass it and get the job or not. So I had to rehearse mathematics beyond the statistics the biological course offered. I did this without calculators to build the reasoning better and faster. Secondly, I am a big fan of economics and companies' remuneration packages. I discovered that the highest-paid employees and biggest revenue firms had one thing in common: they had a thing or two to do with STEM. When I see data that is irrefutable, I accept it. So the facts on ground made me conclude that those with math-based backgrounds go on to earn a lot of money as career/skilled professionals. |
Smilemorezz:On what particular issue? I want to see if it makes to be discussed here so others can learn. Thankss. |
Kudos to UNILAG and its management! No university in the East (south south and south east) has convoked a 5.0 CGPA graduate. Are the universities' academic and administrative staff in the East saying that they don't get the best and brightest students? Abi our people no sabi book? UI also does well, but old posts (pre-corona) on Nairaland say that the Biochemistry and Geology departments are OAU are demonic in restricting academic performers compared to their counterparts in engineering and accounting. |
thesicilian:Jesus! That is not entirely true! The majority of undergraduates across British universities are British citizens, and yes, white people. Because I am sure you will say na Indians and Nigerians descendants in the UK. The UK is 80%+ white. So how can Blacks (3.7%) or say Indians (3.1%) populate the top-tier academic ranks in British universities? You are mistaking postgraduate students for undergraduates. There is just no way foreigners will populate the undergraduate student population in any country. Where would the natives now study? Since that is the case, how can the same foreigners make the majority of top performers at the undergraduate level? Haba! Let's fear God when we write on Obasanjo's Internet. |
alakara:The most lucrative career paths are math based. There are different high paying career paths immediately after tertiary education, some of which are: oil and gas, pilot, tech/programmers, finance etc. From being an aerospace engineer to an investment banker to computer scientist to a quant working in high-tech finance to artificial intelligence engineers to the geologist working in an oil field in the Arabian Desert. The highest-paying jobs have one thing in common: You must know mathematics. Not knowing it reduces your chances of earning a good salary. Unless you have the skills of a top athlete or entertainer, both of which are rare. However, not everyone can be a Tiwa Savage or Mikel Obi. Another outlier is being a salesperson as sales offer a much quicker route to lucrative earnings. See a discussion on the best courses to study in the UK if one wants to earn a lot of money: https://www.reddit.com/r/FIREUK/comments/1bvmjrr/best_degreescareers_to_do_for_high_income/ Aside from law (especially from an elite university), most were math-based courses. Medicine is equally lucrative but it takes too long to gestate compared to say Mathematics. The global economy is fueled by science and technology. The biggest companies in the world by market capitalisation and revenue are largely in science and technology, and with AI, those grounded in hard core mathematics such as Physics and Mathematics, have a very high chance of earning a lot of money immediately after tertiary education. P.S. Even in teaching, math teachers out-earn other subject teachers. |
0neal:lol Oh yes! I have, and considering the hypocrisy of so-called modern women. I see them criticising men who explore, but I am yet to see any condemn their fellow women for withholding sex from men and weaponising it. The hypergamy is intact and the man must provide yet he must beg for sex. It just does not make sense. Hitherto, you had this penchant of bashing Nigerian men who just flash money to get women.4 This is because the same men criticise the women for loving money whereas na fellow men dey use money to entice the women. It is men's fault here. Although men from a certain region are way too overt in using money to woo women, stoking the flame of Hypergamy to a higher degreThose men caused it, else why do they apply the same monetary pressure on non-ethnic women? Mind you, they apply this pressure in regions/countries where the native men don't practice the same culture. So, it now looks like those non-ethnic women love them for who they are, rather than the money they press. In Nigeria, it is limited because the two other big ethnic groups can out-spend these men. So, they focus on their women, and the minority ethnic groups within their sphere where the women from these closely related groups like them because again, they spend more than their own men. |
RodgersAkpafu:Had to quote all and I also say yes to the tweet you quoted. I have never seen the sense in the distinction between so-called expats and immigrants. Maybe that was true when corporations sent droves of white folks to man operations across the world, but in today's world where the natives of those countries have improved themselves, the same corporations need them to satisfy the needs of each country. I came across a post on Reddit where some white folks were lamenting how tech companies in Japan insist on the language proficiency even at tech companies - pre-Corona, tech firms were more lenient on language proficiency. Someone replied that other people especially Chinese, Vietnamese and Indians have improved their tech skills and most importantly, speak Japanese. So the narrative that Japanese companies would have to employ only white Westerners who don't know the language is misplaced. These non-white people know Japanese as well, and English too. And that is a major falling I think many white Anglophones are yet to come to terms with - the English you say you own, many people know it and they are natives. So, what value are you bringing especially if you are a mid-tier career professional? The other day, someone wrote on Bloomberg about how it is tough for "expats" to renew their work visas in Singapore and the lack of career opportunities for entry-level/mid-level professionals in Hong Kong (where Chinese is essential). The only way I can grasp the expat terminology is where it is almost impossible to attain permanent residency in a country - UAE and Singapore. But in the case of a white person or brown or black has lived for more than ten years, omo, everyone is an immigrant. As for British and Canadian universities, just as the same across their Anglophone brothers, the only way to mitigate against corrupting the system is to de-commercialise graduate studies education. With the commercialisation of grad programs, anything is permissible. Government have to increase funding for universities via higher tuition fees or higher taxes, close down universities with funny looking names, prioritize citizens who want to study, don't make higher education a core component of the GDP as in Australia. Just as real estate is to live and should not be the ONLY banks of wealth preservation, so should higher education institutions not be made to be over-profit oriented - one of the banes with privatising education regardless of the level. |
mohbadliveson:I'm pleased to say I predicted this on Nairaland many years ago. Kudos to the Bishop! |
McLizbae:No, it's not. The Times Higher Education is way more recognised than Webometrics. Just as the QS Ranking is more acknowledged than the other two. Then we've the Shanghai ARWU which is superior when it comes to scientific and technology programs. All have different methodologies. Although, I prefer the QS and ARWU because THEducation has turned its ranking to pure water versions. |
Olichoke:The Nigerian Church as a body, especially in the southern part, has its issues. However, when it comes to quality education, it's undisputed. Generally, schools owned and managed by established churches tend to perform well academically. The Catholic Church is renowned for this. |
Congratulations to him. The last all-time high BGS was/is a Nairalander who had 4.96 in Plant Biotechnology. Worked at STANBIC IBTC before pursuing his PhD at Wayne State University in the US. |
oloyemeji:A diploma is not a recognised academic degree in most countries. You would have to top it with a structured academic degree. You are an immigrant - a Black African one for that matter. You are not an African American or a Black South African. So, you have to be intentional with your choices before spending hard currency in certain places. It is not a scholarship aka free money. What program do you intend to pursue? What work experiences do you have currently? Are you willing to learn a new language? What are the employment opportunities for non-native citizens, especially Black Africans? Do the native citizens have enough good jobs, such that there are jobs available for non-native foreigners? What is the process of obtaining/issuing a work visa/permit for foreign graduates from RECOGNISED universities in the country? P.S. A native is Finnish, aka White Scandinavian or White English. A non-native citizen is a non-White European who is a naturalised citizen. You are now a non-native foreigner. |
Very good! This is why so-called toilet Nigerian elites don't like him - he promises to make it hard for them to have a permanent base while ruining their home countries. Everybody go focus on developing their dominant countries. |
As exemplified here: the highest paying industries are oil and gas, finance and tech. Just as I penned a few years ago, quant/math based courses are the most lucrative both in Nigeria and across the world. If you want to earn a lot of money as a skilled career professional, please learn mathematics. See my signature. |
Afolue:I understand where you come from. However, with the presence of the Internet, information has been democratised and is universal. Laptops and phones are now cheaper than ever before. The issue I see is location and the determination. Some people have the phobia to change locations which could be, and actually is, very critical to their future success. I had a friend who made a first class and was always lamenting of being called for aptitude tests in Lagos whereas he was based in Aba. The constant travelling and costs made him resigned from job hunting and decided to travel to Dubai to "hustle" (as I was told since we parted ties). However, I had another female acquaintance who was and is based in Lagos - so no excuses for aptitude tests - but wasn't informed of the many opportunities in the industry she was in. Meanwhile, I have another senior classmate who moved to Lagos, did his MSc at UNILAG and has worked in different corporations, and is doing very well. In a few years time, I believe he too will earn a million naira (the industry isn't that lucrative compared to finance or oil and gas). Yet again, I've another who moved to Abuja and got a sales role. Unlike the first three I mentioned, this lass had a second class lower, but she earns more than a million naira and got a company car and accommodation.. Two things characterise everyone: determination and location. Everyone's destiny is in their own hands. |
Angelfrost:The Akpaamunsi of a man is actually a naturalised Australian citizen who was a one time PDP politician from Anambra state at the House of Representatives. He's simply envious, typical of so-called Nigerian elites, that an ordinary Nigerian could achieve the same citizenship stuff as he did. Nigerian elites hate it when the citizens prosper and aspire to be like them. It says a lot how they run the country. Do As I Say, Not As I Do. |
The first picture is giving - effing proud of daddy! What a Squad! Congratulations Donald! I'm fvcking glad you won, and did so bigly and hoogely! |
God1000:Cry an ocean! People who campaigned and voted for Buhari in 2015 and Tinubu in 2023 suddenly believe they're intelligent to have a say in US politics ![]() |
pocohantas:Too bad then. I guess it boils down to personal traits. Also bad that companies don't state their ranges online (always "it is competitive " ) and there is a dearth of information regarding the same topic. How person wan take negotiate when one does not know the bearings? chai! |
And with that ladies and gentlemen, the japa frenzy has finally been thrown into the gutters. Anyone who tries to leave Nigeria unprepared is in for a longggggggggggg thing! |
pocohantas:Poco, I understand, but this is Nairaland - our own Reddit. Why hide salaries? For instance, if anyone sends a PM, don't respond, but at least spill the information. Even if na range. |
PulaPower:I know the motive of your post, but the reality is that there was an exodus of Hong Kongers to Canada when the city administration was handed over to Mainland China in the One Country, Two Systems. That influx from Hong Kong to Canada especially in the British Columbia Area made Vancouver to be known as Hongcouver. So Canada, just as South Korea and Japan, is just like another "China" to Chinese. |
