EducationRe: Top WAEC Scorers In 2009 And Where They Are Today by Gerrard59(op): 3:50pm On Aug 19, 2024
Kdamilola:
This is a very fascinating research!

Looking at the results and the current situation of the individuals, one may really be tempted to rush to conclusion. However, as rightly pointed out by numerous comments, the dataset looks skewed. This is not to deny the fact that academic success may lead to future success, but rather to further buttress that all the individuals (data) attended some of the best secondary schools where school fees are exorbitant. It's understandable that newspaper publication was used as the basis for data collection, but it's very glaring that most of the best WAEC and UTME results come from the best (sometimes expensive) schools in Nigeria.
That is largely a Nigerian fault as the best secondary schools ought to be publicly funded, aka affordable and accessible. This is how it works in Switzerland, Japan and Singapore. Even if the best secondary schools are privately owned, the best universities should not be (an example is Brazil). For a society to promote equal opportunities, the best education should come from publicly funded institutions.

I wrote on Nairaland that the secondary schools our parents attended have deteriorated such that their children don't plan to send their children to. It foretells danger. Currently, many parents of young ones send their children to private primary and secondary schools. In the future, these people will aspire to send their children to private universities rather than public universities from which they graduated. However, this should not be the case.

Nevertheless, it is no surprise that well-funded schools produce the top academic students. This is a universal phenomenon.

This is a very good topic which I am quite interested in, and if the OP is willing to dig further, I'll suggest that more factors be considered. It's not practical to include school, but I think cost of school fee per term or otherwise (close-ended), questions regarding scholarship(s) won for those out of the country (a 'yes or no' should be ok for this), and other factors worth considering can be used to develop a model and tested to see if one or more of these factors impact the success(es).
Thanks for the suggestions.

Regarding school fees, that will be a separate study as I aim to search across the country for the schools with the highest school fees across all classes in both primary and secondary. Something like the top ten most expensive schools in each state. Lagos and Abuja would get twenty slots. Then after that has been achieved, top graduates from selected universities will have their secondary schools listed alongside to test the model.

For scholarships, except in rare cases, PhDs especially in the abroad are fully funded. For MSc, that is tricky, but I would say those who made a First Class in their undergraduate education have a strong chance of getting a scholarship. The search will be beamed on undergraduate studies, which some of the listed names got but the anti-spam bot will not allow me to link sources in peace. But it will be an added factor.

But all in all, good job, OP!
Thank you!

I understand your point, but as I stated in one of my replies, it is largely because of the historical relationship Nigeria has with the UK and by Anglophone extension, the US. Indians are the same. Some of the names here even moved back to Nigeria. The Indian version had ALL living in the US as I write. It is only the Chinese that have bucked the trend by returning and building institutions, companies and systems in China and their cousins' lands.

A child born in Mushin to parents struggling to put food on the table and attending the government school around the corner is most likely never going to be able to accomplish this.
On the contrary, there are MANY examples of such a scenario. Education remains the surest bet out of poverty in any society. So, it is why young people especially those who are yet to enter higher institutions should be guided. The Internet makes this possible unlike twenty years ago.

Oga shut up your dirty envious mouth.
FYI, I don't envy Nigerian elites. It is important you have this drilled into your kon kon head! Why should I envy largely unintelligent people? You think the heads of Jesuits and Mormons in the US will make a similar statement without providing clear evidence from an unbiased source? You think people will not question them? Who is your pastor that he should not be questioned?! Huh?!

He said I stand to be corrected
Next time, he should THINK before opening his mouth. You don't make categorical statements in public without providing evidence.

and I believe MFM has the highest graduates in Nigeria. That's what he said.
So, it is not the highest number of first class graduates anymore? But the highest number of graduates? So, who are those attending RCCG and the Catholic Church?

If you have a problem with his opinion present the first class graduates in your church or keep shut
You are a foolish miscreant! Your pastor made a stoopid claim in public and you believe he should be believed hook, line and sinker! Absolute rubbish!

You didn't applaud him for giving 250k to over 400 first class graduates. Something your government cannot do.
That is not a categorical statement. I have no interest in that. You are not going to dictate to me what interest I have in. Also, he is not the first religious cleric to donate to HIS MEMBERS. It is not like he donated to non-members or non-Christians.

You're here finding fault with his opinion.
Because it is foolish and stoopid to air baseless opinions publicly!

So, awarding the graduates openly is not enough proof to you?
I said, let see other denominations also award their first-class graduates openly with their figures that is better than Dr. Olukoya
They did not claim that they have the highest number of first class graduates. Olukoya did this without checking if others surpassed his or not. MFM has fewer members than RCCG. MFM has fewer branches than the Catholic Church. MFM has fewer secondary schools compared to Winners Chapel Faith Academies across the country. So, how come MFM has more first class graduates than other churches?

Gbadugbakun:
You're a goat. Useless and worthless fool. Who cares about your miserable life
You religious nutjobs have enjoyed so much freedom to spew mumbo-jumbo in public, but as the Internet penetrates Nigeria the more and Gen-Z become more vocal, expect scrutiny. I don't care who your pastor is, what I am interested in is how he manufactures categorical statements in public.

This belief that your pastor or any other cleric cannot be questioned is ridiculous.

No, you're taking the comparison too far. Having stellar grades does not lead to an "excellent life" after school. There are many with good grades with poor life after school life. There are many of us who failed woefully in school but leads better life than those with stellar grades.
Excellent life have nothing to do with grades in school. It should be better put as "having stellar grades can lead to an excellent career" which

This is incorrect. Maybe you should rephrase your statement. There are thousands of black professionals who have thrive and excel in many different countries. There are many individuals who I personally know who thrive and have excelled outside of the US. In fact some have to leave the US to achieve a higher level of professional success.
African Americans as a group are the richest set of black people in the world. That is the basis I used for that statement. Black Africans benefit from that segment of the US population. They out-earn their counterparts in Africa.

I highly doubt this is even true.

In order to arrive at this conclusion, he would have to take census of the total number of first class graduates in every branch of every denomination, including Deeper Life, Christ Embassy, RCCG, Winners etc. Not just in Lagos alone but in all the 36 states and FCT. Not just the pentecostals alone but also Catholics, Baptists, Anglicans, Lutherans etc.

I don't think someone who's supposedly that educated should be making such broad statements without facts to back them up.
End. Of. Discussion.

It is one of the issues I have when debating with Nigerians: the sheer arrogance and ignorance in opening their smelling mouths spewing nonsense and ingredients!

If you can't afford private universities, atleast invest in good secondary schools for your kids.

And a good home tutor.
Even If you spend 60% of your income on your child's basic education, it's worth it.

Once the foundation is solid, they can then go on to UI, Unilag, Uniben, UNN of this world and do great things and change your family history.
That foundation is critical.
True words. The foundation enables them to compete on merit for admissions into first generation federal universities, unarguably Nigeria's most affordable universities with high quality. From there, they can compete favourably. To change the family's history and private tutoring, they should aim at quant-based courses. Children from small should be made to be at least good at mathematics. The most lucrative jobs and even entrepreneurial ventures are math based.

Bro, there is no debate here

I only pointed out that you cannot find every information online. And that includes the source list you want for 2009 from Dority unless one visits the school and specifically collects said data. My critique of the list is putting people with 6as and 3bs as top ten performers in waec.

Such people might not be top five in their school , talk less of top ten in the nation- I know this from experience.. If you want to make a list like this, stick to people that made all as or 8as and one B.
I see. Thanks. Your perspective is refreshing. Na to meet WAEC officials be that to know the methodology used in ranking students.

Firstly,

You should ask, how do I know Ogochukwu Chuks attended Dority when it is not on his LinkedIn profile or Twitter acct? I know this, because he was my junior in school. I know the school did well in 2010, because that was my set. As for the records you are asking for, I no be waec - that one is not my business.

Like I said earlier, you did well but it is impossible to capture all the data because everybody is not a social media person

Chuks page sef on linkedin, he doesn't even mention his work in secondary school.

You should understand that there are many other silent guys like that.
My information was not sourced from social media, but from a newspaper publication. I also stated that I could not obtain a few persons' information. Also, I even contacted someone privately to get her details. So, I crossed my Ts and dotted my Is. You said the school performed well in 2009. The question is: how come their names were not published in a newspaper publication? My argument is that when you want to counter an argument, you do so with sources. It is not about LinkedIn but the names as published by WAEC. Also, it is actually good to know why the school has declined in performance if they had such a stellar record.

Yes, we can debate, but it should be fact-based.

There is no year between 2009- 2011 that students there failed to get minimum of 6 As. In fact, if you got 6A's and 3B's in waec there as at 2010, you might find that you were not even top five amongst the guys in your set.

As it is, no country can compete with the Chinese in manufacturing, not even the West. They grudgingly admit it. The best is to go to China to buy those goods and sell them to Nigeria. As your capital increases, open a factory in China and sell to the world. Inverters, aka solar related? Bros, sorry, you cannot compete with the Chinese.

As for friends or government funding, see, this life na as you waka come. Your best bet is family and as income improves, friends and the banks will come in. You seeeeeeeeeeeee!!! That Motherhood Penalty is so real.
Generally, the Japanese don't like strangers to live with them for extended periods. Visit? Yes, but this takes time to even get an invite. Live? Hard hard hard even as a domestic servant. Besides, Japan's neighbours are equally rich. Singapore is different as there is an endless supply from Indonesia and the Philippines. Also, Singapore is English speaking compared to Japan where such people have to learn Japanese. It is a reason the policy of hiring foreigners as domestic servants as introduced by South Korea will likely fail because they exhibit the same characteristics as the Japanese. To prove it, the availability of foreign domestic servants did not improve Singapore and Hong Kong's fertility rates.

Nothing, not daycare or domestic servants, beats the care of a mother. cool
