Nigeria has completed the repayment of the principal amount of its $3.4bn loan from the International Monetary Fund, with the final payment made on April 30, 2025.

The loan, disbursed in full on April 30, 2020, was part of the IMF’s emergency COVID-19 Rapid Financing Instrument, aimed at helping Nigeria cope with the economic disruptions caused by the pandemic, including falling oil prices, a recession, and fiscal pressures.

Although the principal repayment has been fully settled, it was found upon further checks of the IMF website that several charges associated with the loan remain due.

These charges, which consist mainly of interest, will continue to be repaid annually for the next few years.

The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has been criticised for the statement on Peter Obi.

criticised the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, over his allegedly disrespectful remarks towards Nigeria’s past heroes.

Akpabio made the criticism during the valedictory session held in honour of the late Niger Delta elder statesman and former Federal Commissioner for Information, Chief Edwin Clark.

The criticism came barely 24 hours after Obi, while eulogising Clark, claimed that the labours of Nigeria’s past heroes had ultimately been in vain due to the numerous challenges currently facing the country, particularly economic issues.

“For someone like me who just participated in the 2023 general election, he (Clark) lived a life of courage, sacrifice, justice, and value. So why do we keep saying the labours of our heroes past should not be in vain? I’m happy that Jonathan is here.

“But I can tell you, their sacrifices are in vain. They have sacrificed for nothing. We were in this country when people protested when there was no need to protest under Goodluck Jonathan. Where are those protesters now? Have they disappeared?

Traditional rulers in Anambra State on Thursday conferred a chieftaincy title of ‘Dike Si Mba’ of Anambra on President Bola Tinubu.

The Traditional rulers led by the Chairman of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council, Igwe Chidubem Iweka of Obosi, gave the President the title in Awka during his official visit to the state.

‘Dike Si Mba’ loosely translates to ‘Hero from another land’, was given to President Tinubu by the traditional rulers representing all the communities in Anambra State.

Tinubu, who is in Anambra State on official visit, arrived at the Chinua Achebe International Airport in Umueri around 12:15pm, and was received by Governor Chukwuma Soludo, his deputy, Onyeka Ibezim and other government officials.

The presidency has dismissed ongoing speculations about a surging political coalition aimed at challenging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

In a statement on X, the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, described the narrative as nothing more than a “political hallucination.”

“To say a political coalition is surging when in fact no one is interested in it is a political hallucination,”Bwala said.

The media aide stated that there is a clear disinterest expressed by major political figures and institutions in any such alliance.

He emphasised the growing strength of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), noting that the party has been attracting key opposition figures, including high-profile defectors.

“The Governors’ Forum of PDP said they are not interested, the NWC of PDP said same. Peter Obi recently said he is not in any coalition talks, Labour Party people said they are not interested.

“Meanwhile in contrast, the party surging is APC; receiving defectors left, right and centre including a former vice presidential candidate of PDP in the 2023 elections. It is not a coalition, but hallucination,” Bwala added.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who emerged second in the 2023 presidential election with 6,984,520 votes, has consistently expressed his resolve to lead a formidable opposition capable of challenging the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next electoral cycle.
