CBN Asks Nigerians To Reject Old Naira Notes From Banks. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has directed customers to start rejecting old naira notes from banks, insisting that the old notes ceased to be legal tender by the January 31 as earlier stipulated. The Deputy Director, Currency Operation, Dr Rekiyat Yusuf, disclosed this in Lokoja, Kogi State, on Thursday during the sensitisation of market men and women about the redesigned naira notes. She said that appropriate sanctions would be applied against any erring banks found dispensing old notes to customers henceforth. The CBN therefore directed customers to report any bank still dispensing old notes either over counter or through the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) to the apex bank. Yusuf further urged traders to avail themselves of the window provided by the January 31st deadline by visiting banks to exchange the old notes with the new ones. “There is no reason for banks to still be stocking their Automated Teller Machines with old notes as the Apex bank has made enough redesigned notes available for dispensing to members of the public. Any bank caught would be made to face appropriate sanction”, she said. In a response to a customer over the continued dispensing of old naira notes via ATMs, Yusuf said, “If banks give you old notes, reject them and return them to the banks and report the banks to us immediately for appropriate action. We have given them enough new currency notes to dispense to replace the old ones in circulation. “Carry your old naira notes in your possession to the bank, deposit it without any charges attached. CBN has directed commercial banks not to charge anything on such deposit. By 31st January, this present naira notes will not be accepted for buying and selling in this country.” Yusuf outlined the reasons for redesigning the notes to include curbing terrorism, kidnapping for ransome and endemic corruption in the society, adding the action was taken to control inflation. “There is also the need to fulfill international best practices of redisegning currency once in five to eight years. We are long over due since the present currency came into operation since 1984,” she said. Thereafter, she embarked on the inspection of some ATMs within the Lokoja metropolis to ensure that the machines were stocked with the newly redesigned notes. Earlier, the Kogi State branch controller of CBN, Alhaji Ahmed Sule, said, “Lokoja being a gateway state to many states where a lot of business transactions involving currency exchange takes place, it is necessary to embark on active sensitisation due to its primary responsibility of issuing currency to the public.”

Nigerian university uses Tinubu’s ‘balablu’ blunder to illustrate exam questions to students His critics relentlessly hoist totems of his many incoherent and slurry statements as evidence of his unsuitability for Nigeria’s top job. Some students at the Nasarawa State University were asked, during an examination, to justify the social judgement theory using one popular misspeak by the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress Bola Tinubu. Last November, Mr Tinubu, at an engagement in Imo, slurrily said “a town hall, different from “balablu-blu-blu-bulaba.” The misspeak, which spotlighted possible dementia of the aspiring Nigerian leader, became a ready instrument of humour among young Nigerians online who oppose Mr Tinubu’s presidential ambition. “‘Using the social media trending sarcastic statement: A Townhall, Different from Bala-Blu Blu-Blu Bula-Ba’,justify social judgement theory,” question 1 of the second semester examination for sophomore Mass Communication students of the Nasarawa State-owned university, read. Per encyclopedia.com, the social judgement theory explains how attitudes are cognitively represented, the psychological processes involved in assessing persuasive communications, and the conditions under which communicated attitudes are either accepted or rejected. The flag bearer of the ruling APC continues to evoke public concerns about his mental fitness to govern Africa’s most populous nation, ahead of next month’s poll where he will square of against co-septuagenarian, Atiku Abubakar of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party; Peter Obi of Labour Party and 15 other candidates. His critics relentlessly hoist totems of his many incoherent and slurry statements as evidence of his unsuitability for Nigeria’s top job. Mr Tinubu, 70, however, has repeatedly dismissed criticisms about his frail health, saying being Nigerian president is not grave digging that requires his physical strength.

Brymo Bows To Pressure, Apologises Over Derogatory Comments. “I did not insult the tribe, I am sorry to anyone who it sounded as such to. Nigerian singer Olawale Olofooro, popularly called Brymo has apologised to Nigerians over his comment on Igbo presidency. This comes after some Nigerians signed petitions to stop the singer from winning the All Africa Music Award which he was nominated in the ‘Song Writer of the Year’ category. The singer had in a tweet said that Igbo presidency will remain a pipe dream as long as there are talks about Biafra in the South-East — a development that stirred angry reactions on social media. However, in a recent video, the singer was seen apologising to Nigerians over his controversial tweet. “It is very important you understand that this entire fracas began with me seeing in the media that Chimamanda Adichie refused some national honours and had picked up some traditional titles in the East at home. “And I suggested that for me, it says a lot about the Igbo presidency because that actual seat is what the region should be eyeing right now. I have clamoured for Igbo presidency in the last few years, you wouldn’t believe it. “It will pop in your mind when you hear the news that Igbos do not actually want the presidency. “I did not insult the tribe, I am sorry to anyone who it sounded as such to. I was trying to weigh into a very important matter,” he said. https://fb.watch/i2CrDi7XB4/

Obi clears air on alleged liquidation of UK company, Next Int’l Ltd. The presidential flag bearer of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has reacted to stories making the rounds that a company linked to him and his family, Next International (UK) Ltd, was liquidated by the UK authorities for failing to make tax returns for a period of time. Reacting to the story in a statement issued by the Obi-Datti Media Office on Wednesday, the former Anambra State Governor dismissed speculations about the company’s liquidation, explaining that the owners voluntarily liquidated the firm as it was no longer in operation. The statement also indicted political opponents of being behind the story in their bid to bring down the Labour Party and its presidential candidate’s giant strides to “make political capital out of the development.” The statement signed by Diran Onifade, Head of the Obi-Datti Media Office, said: “For the record, the entity was 99% owned by Next Nigeria International Ltd., and established as its buying office in the 90s and Peter Obi was its CEO. READ ALSO:2023: Obasanjo writes young Nigerians, recommends Peter Obi for president “At the time Peter Obi became governor of Anambra State in 2006, his wife assumed management of the winding down of the company and about one year ago, requested that the company be dissolved under the voluntary strike off of the entity on grounds of dissolution and being inoperational, which is normal in winding up an entity. “Peter Obi has consistently maintained that he is no longer involved in any Next related business,” the statement said. Onifade added that those twisting the said liquidation of Next International (UK) Ltd. have run out of what to use in attacking Obi. “When our Principal insists that you go and verify facts about him and the information he dishes out, it didn’t say go and falsify facts. “The LP candidate by his antecedents in Anambra State for eight years, in private ventures where he held sway his records among the pack in this race for the Presidency, puts him miles ahead in moral rating,” the statement said.

Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) and Rabiu Musa Kwankwanso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) have been scheduled to speak on diverse issues relating to Nigeria’s forthcoming election at Chatham House in London. This is coming weeks after the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, addressed the international affairs body regarding his policy plans for the country. According to details obtained from Chatham House website, Obi was to speak on ”A vision for policy change and institutional reforms” on Monday while Kwankwanso would address “Service delivery and policy alternatives in Nigeria” on Wednesday. The statement reads: “Peter Gregory Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, discusses his vision for policy and governance reforms in Nigeria, including the priorities for tackling deep-rooted insecurity and corruption, and measures to promote social and political mobility for Nigerian citizens. “Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), discusses his policy ideas for improving systems and services in Nigeria, with a particular focus on the country’s education sector and the wider priorities for ensuring secure and inclusive service delivery.” Despite his appearance at the Chatham House, Tinubu had come under severe criticisms over his continued refusal to participate in the debates and town hall meetings organized by different organizations ahead of the polls.

You Will Regret It – Kwankwaso Tells Ganduje For Picking Tinubu Over him. The presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has told Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje that someday he will regret not supporting his presidential ambition. Naija News reports that Governor Ganduje is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and is solidly behind the party’s presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, a Southerner. A statement credited to Ganduje earlier quoted the governor saying that history would be repeated in the state come February 25, 2023. The APC Governor reportedly said that Kano would again reject a citizen of the state for a Southern candidate as it did in the 1993 presidential election when it supported the late Moshood Abiola (MKO Abiola) and rejected its kindred, late Bashir Tofa. Ganduje spoke about helping Tinubu to gain massive votes in the state come February 25th. In a swift reaction, Kwankwaso said that whoever works against him in Kano in the forthcoming 2023 general elections will regret it. The NNPP Presidential flagbearer said, “I had a rally not long ago, which was one of the best rallies. I had one in Wudil, the southern senatorial district. I had one in Bichi, northern senatorial district. I opened my office in Kano Central and one of the best rallies because you can’t compare it with the ones by some of the candidates who had crowds that came to Kano from neighbouring states and so on. “Now, you see, I don’t want to talk about that man. I don’t know whether he said it or not. But the reality is that, anybody who work against NNPP or Kwankwaso in 2023, one day, he will regret it, that he made a mistake. “Anybody who knows me, who knows my antecedents believes that, if I win this presidential election, Kano will have maximum benefit, of course northern Nigeria will benefit and of course the country. “So, I am surprised if you go and say I should hold a rally. Rally, I have done many rallies in Kano. In just recent months, January and December in Kano, in all the three senatorial districts. So, what is the problem about holding rally in Kano?

Afenifere replies South-West governors, says Nigeria needs regional equity, not ‘emi lo kan philosophy’ The pan-Yoruba socio-political group said Nigeria’s corporate existence can only be guaranteed through regional equity. Afenifere has tackled the South-West Governor’s Forum (SGF) for kicking against the agitation for the formation of the Oodua nation. The pan-Yoruba socio-political group, in a statement issued on Saturday, said Nigeria’s corporate existence can only be guaranteed through regional equity. In the statement signed by Sola Ebíseni, Secretary General of Afenifere, and obtained by Peoples Gazette, the group criticised chairman of the SGF and Ondo governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, for playing “petty politics” to the detriment of the Yoruba people. “So, let Akeredolu not boast of any capacity to dictate the method adopted by the Yoruba agitators or seek to set the rest of Nigeria against his Ndigbo colleagues or the entire South East in his unhidden separatist agenda of securing undue advantage for his party and region in the quest for the Nigerian President of Southern extraction. “We state for the umpteenth time, that the true and real recipe for peace and continued corporate existence of Nigeria, is an arrangement that will guarantee regional equity and not an ‘emi lo kan’ philosophy in the mode of King Louis’s l’état c’est moi,” the statement read. The governors noted that no state in the South-West region would allow the agitation to scuffle the sacrifices of the country’s heroes, adding that the police would begin a clamp down on agitators of the Oodua Yoruba nation within Nigeria. “Those clamouring for Oodua nation will not succeed. People have not laid down their lives for this country for unscrupulous individuals to scuttle it. This country is very important to some of us. “We recognize the right of the people to protest or agitate. But if the police feel your actions are treasonable, they will arrest and prosecute you,” he said. The governor spoke at the launching of Emblem Appeal to flag off the 2023 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebrations held in Akure. In their reaction, Afenifere said that though Mr Akeredolu was within his right as the South-West Coordinator of his party’s campaigns to safeguard the opportunity coming his way and his party in the ‘pipe dream’ of presidential power, his “vituperations” were, however, bereft of statesmanship and national conciliation. “We have no problem with the Governor playing to the gallery, as a glorified Chief Security Officer, urging that security forces clamp down on any person or group whose activities he interpreted as capable of disintegrating the Nigerian State because we are no less patriotic and committed to its continuing corporate existence. “Our worry however is that Akeredolu, even as the Chairman of the Southern Governors Forum, would not, in deference to that high pedestal, wean himself from petty politicking which sacrifices equity needed for national peace and cohesion in preference of crass opportunism,” the group further added in the statement. According to Afenifere “It is however unimaginable that the Chairman of the Southern Governors Forum would descend to the abyss of equating his pontification for the equity of a Southern Presidency with the hegemony of his or other ethnic nationality. “To say that the clamour for Southern President was “especially for South West” was not only most insensitive but also to make a fool of his colleagues outside of South West. “No wonder then that the Governor of Delta in whose office the Southern Governors’ Conference was held was the first to betray the cause by accepting the second fiddle position of the Vice President to the detriment of what has turned out to be their feeble declarations.” The group further posited that there is no region in the country where the elite including the ruling class in government has been able to determine the methods adopted by agitators or succeeded in checkmating the effects thereof. “The unkindest cut of Akeredolu’s new song was his reference to IPOB as if he had any control over the choice of a different modus operandi employed by different agitating groups in Nigeria. “Incidentally, those who fought the civil war, truly shed their youthful blood and have seen all about Nigeria, are now in the vanguard of the national movement not only for Southern but in the quest for the requisite equity are in the queue for the Nigerian President of South East extraction. There lies the solution to separatist agitations and not self-serving sanctimonious notifications,” the group said.

Stop Campaign, Apologise To Nigerians For Deceiving Them - Atiku Tells Tinubu. The Atiku/Okowa Presidential Campaign on Saturday dismissed the attempt by the TInubu/Shettima Campaign to compare what it observed as the prosperous years of the PDP to “the famished years” of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in office, noting that it is a further confirmation that the APC Presidential Campaign is plagued by a “lying spirit.”https://tribuneonlineng.com/stop-campaign-apologise-to-nigerians-atiku-okowa-campaign-tells-tinubu/

Documents Expose How Kogi Governor, Yahaya Bello Returned To Nigerian Central Bank N20Billion Workers’ Salaries Earlier Diverted To Private Account. The CBN confirmed the receipt of the money in correspondence to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, and signed by the Director, Development Finance Department. Documents from the Central Bank of Nigeria have exposed how the Kogi State Government led by Governor Yahaya Bello returned N20 billion meant for workers’ salaries earlier diverted to a secret bank account. The CBN confirmed the receipt of the money in correspondence to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, and signed by the Director, Development Finance Department. “We refer to your letter dated November 5, 2021, and wish to confirm the details of the receipt of the amount as stated below: "Bank: Sterling Bank Plc Amount: N19, 333 333,333.36 Date of Receipt: 04 November 2021 Please accept the assurances of our greatest regards,” the CBN said in the document signed by the Director, Development Finance Department. One of the documents noted that the diverted fund was returned to the CBN’s coffers by the Bello government from a Sterling Bank account on November 04, 2021. Another document read: /BNF/ RETURN OF DISB OF FUNDS TO STERLING BANK IFO KOGI STATE UNDER THE SALARY BAILOUT FACILITY." The action followed a Court Order which ordered that the money should be refunded to the apex bank by Sterling Bank, the financial institution where the state government had secretly stashed the money. The court order had read, “It is hereby ordered as follows; that the Account upon which this Suit was instituted was frozen by an order of this honourable court. That the management of the Sterling bank Plc, whose account no, 0073572696 with the name Kogi State Salary Bail Out Account is domiciled has clarified the questions resulting to the commencement of this suit. “That the management of Sterling Bank has since acknowledged the existence of the said account in their book but claimed same was a mirror account. That it is expedient for the suit to be discontinued and the account unfrozen to enable the transfer and return of the sum to the coffers of the CBN where the said bailout fund was disbursed.” SaharaReporters had in various reports stated that the controversial N20 billion meant for workers’ salaries in the state was stashed away in a commercial bank account operated by the state government led by Bello. On Thursday, EFCC arraigned Ali Bello, a nephew of the governor before an Abuja Federal High Court over an alleged N10 billion fraud. He and one Dauda Sulaiman alongside one Abdulsalami Hudu, Cashier of Kogi State House Administration (now at large) were accused of fraudulently withdrawing the sum of N10.2 billion from the Kogi State treasury. They allegedly delivered the money to a Bureau de Change operator, Rabiu Tafada, in Abuja, to change to foreign currency. One of the charges reads: “That you, Ali Bello, Dauda Suleiman and Abdulsalami Hudu (Now at large) between January and December 2021, in Abuja within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court procured Rabiu Usman Tafada to take possession of the total sum of N5,865,756,800 (Five Billion, Eight Hundred and Sixty Five Million, Seven Hundred and Fifty-Six Thousand, Eight Hundred Naira), which sum you reasonably ought to have known forms part of the proceeds of unlawful activity to wit: criminal misappropriation from the treasury of Kogi State and you thereby committed an offence contrary to sections 18 (c), 15 (2) (d) of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act, 2011 as amended and punishable under section 15 (3) of the same Act.” Another count reads: “That you, Ali Bello, Dauda Suleiman and Abdulsalami Hudu (Now at large) between January and December 2021, in Abuja within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court aided Rabiu Usman Tafada to retain the total sum of N2,509,650,000.00 (Two Billion Five Hundred and Nine Million, Six Hundred and Fifty Thousand), which sum you reasonably ought to have known forms part of the proceeds of an unlawful activity to wit: Criminal Misappropriation from the treasury of Kogi State Government and you thereby committed an offence contrary to sections 18 (a) 15 (2) (d) of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act, 2011 as amended and punishable under section 15 (3) of the same Act.

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has vowed to expose the secrets of a self-acclaimed disciple of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, Simon Ekpa. IPOB made the remark while stressing that the Finland-based Ekpa was not its member. The Kanu-led group denied Ekpa against the backdrop of the five-day sit-at-home he declared across the South-East. Emma Powerful, the spokesman of IPOB, said the sit-at-home order declared by Ekpa had exposed him as an enemy of the group. A statement by Powerful said the order was aimed at destroying lives and properties in the South-East. “IPOB will stop at nothing from exposing Simon Ekpa. We must expose him for clarity’s sake, and nobody should link him with IPOB. He is not our member and can never be an IPOB member,” the statement read. The recent killings and destruction in the South-East have been linked to Ekpa. The Finland-based Biafra agitator recently ordered a five-day sit-at-home which led to the destruction of lives and properties in the South-East.

If Nigeria misses it in 2023, aircraft trying to return my dead body ‘ll crash – Corporal Nwafor …Says past 7yrs has been hellish Mr Sasa Ugwumba Kalu Nwoke popularly known as ‘Corporal Nwafor’ because of his heroic role during the Nigeria civil war, has advised Nigerians against making the wrong choice in the 2023 presidential poll. Corporal Nwafor who spoke exclusively with Vanguard in Umuahia at the Adelabu Street office of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, where he came to collect his Permanent Voter Card, PVC, warned that “if Nigeria misses it in 2023”, the country would be in for doom. The 71-year – old who said he would migrate abroad if a wrong President were elected in 2023, warned that no attempt should be made to bring back his corpse when he would eventually die. “If we don’t get it right in 2023, I will leave this country for you people. It has been a torturous eight years in hell. “Even my dead body will not return to Nigeria. Yes my body will not come to Ohafia. If my dead body is put in an aircraft to bring it back to Nigeria, that aircraft will crash so that my dead body will be charred, and won’t be found!” He said that Nigeria was at the verge of charting a new cause as God has sent a deliver like the biblical Moses among the presidential candidates, praying that Nigerians would be vigilant enough to identify the political Messiah. “Nigeria needs a miracle worker, and fortunately we have one among the presidential candidates but I won’t mention his name. “He is simply the best among others; we don’t have the second best. The youths have to decide. “Remember what Steve Biko said: If you want to build a nation, kill the tribe. These men have been riding on the shoulders of tribalism but today, we need that best candidate who will build the nation. God has brought him our way. He is like Mose who delivered the Israelites from bondage. “We need somebody who loves Nigeria; a man that loves the black race. We have been in trouble. Our children have suffered. Since you were born, have you ever seen a good time? It has been darkness, wickedness and evil”. The civil war veteran who said that Nigerians hardly learn from history, tasked INEC on credible polls in 2023. “INEC has no choice than to do a good job. If anyone in INEC doesn’t want to do a good job, he has to get out so that somebody who will do a fantastic job will come in. “Nigerians are the poorest historians I have ever seen. I hope we have learnt our lessons from the past so we can forge ahead and build a nation.

Nigeria Suspends Mandatory COVID-19 Testing, Social Distancing For Travellers. Nigeria on Monday announced the suspension of the mandatory COVID-19 testing for travellers in and outside the country. Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) in a letter to airline operators said pre-arrival or post-arrival testing for COVID will no longer be required for travellers ‘irrespective of vaccination status’. “PCR tests required for all passengers who are partially/not fully vaccinated have been suspended,” NCAA director-general Musa Nuhu said. The Nigerian aviation official also disclosed that the use of face masks will not be mandatory for all travellers on board aircraft but recommended for persons at risk of severe illness. Nuhu, however, noted that persons aged above and passengers with severe illness are to take precautionary measures. He disclosed that the health status declaration form for travellers entering Nigeria has been replaced with a health questionnaire to “be completed by all passengers travelling to Nigeria preferably pre-departure on the Nigerian International Travel Portal (NITP”. “Passengers who fail to fill the health questionnaire on the NITP pre-departure will be required to fill the health questionnaire either on board the aircraft prior to landing or at the airport terminal building upon arrival. “Persons aged 60 years and above, immunocompromised (e.g. due to organ transplant, cancer, etc), those with co-morbidities (e.g. heart disease, Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, etc), are advised to use face masks, wash their hands with water and soap, use hand alcohol-based sanitizers, and avoid large gatherings. “Disinfection of bags at the entrance of terminal buildings is no longer required. “Airlines are therefore required to resume serving catering (meals and drinks) on board aircraft. “Maintaining social distancing at airport terminal buildings is no longer mandatory. “Facilities and conveyances are advised to maintain good environmental hygiene, good ventilation, and encourage good hand and respiratory hygiene.” The Nigerian aviation authority noted that it recommends the use of alcohol-based sanitiser for passengers and airport workers and stated that boarding and disembarkation protocols are to be maintained. “All other COVID-19 quarantine/travel requirements are hereby made optional. “This AOL supersedes previous AOLs issued on COVID-19 for domestic and international operations.”[sub][/sub]

SHOCK U-TURN Iran ABOLISHES morality police after two months of violent hijab protests with 200 killed in bloody unrest. IRAN has scrapped its controversial morality police after months of deadly protests, it is understood. Riots erupted across the country following the death of Mahsa Amini, who was arrested in the capital Tehran and beaten by cops for not complying with Iran's strict hijab laws. It is understood the 22-year-old died in custody on September 16 after being left in a coma by the regime's morality police. Public outrage over Mahsa's death turned into a bloodbath - with at least 200 people killed in violent riots, according to a top state security body. Mahsa was beaten by morality police after being arrested in the capital Tehran for not complying with tough hijab laws. She was allegedly detained for having some hair visible under her headscarf - which Iranian women are legally required to wear. have been sparked nationwide following her death as thousands of fed-up citizens rally against the harsh laws. Female rioters have burned hijabs in the street and shared videos of themselves tearing off their scarves. The demonstrations are one of the boldest challenges to the clerical leadership since the 1979 revolution. But after weeks of unrest, it is understood Iran will now get rid of morality cops. "Morality police have nothing to do with the judiciary" and have been abolished, Attorney General Mohammad Jafar Montazeri was quoted as saying by the ISNA news agency. His comment came at a religious conference where he responded to a participant who asked "why the morality police were being shut down", the report said. The morality police - known formally as the "Guidance Patrol" - were established under hardline president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to "spread the culture of modesty and hijab", the female head covering. The units began patrols in 2006. It comes as Iran reviews its decades-old hijab laws. Montazeri said that "both parliament and the judiciary are working (on the issue)" of whether the law requiring women to cover their heads needs to be changed. President Ebrahim Raisi said in televised comments Saturday that Iran's republican and Islamic foundations were constitutionally entrenched "but there are methods of implementing the constitution that can be flexible". It comes after Iran's national football team stayed silent as the country's national anthem played out before their opening World Cup match against England. The starting 11 players refused to sing in an apparent show of support for protesters back home. Iranian fans in the Qatari stadium were moved to tears by the incredible gesture as massive protests continue to sweep the Islamic Republic.

Why Soludo, Obaseki, Nnamani, others are ganging-up against Obi. In the last couple of months, it is emerging clear that Peter Obi and his supporters, the Obidents, are not going to fizzle out as predicted by several political pundits. In the South-east and South-south geopolitical zones, the spread of the popularity of the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party has redrawn the political map ahead of the general elections as campaigns thicken. Instead of fizzling as predicted by many, Mr Obi and his supporters have grown significantly since May when Obi left the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. In the last couple of days, several political players in the two regions have intensified attacks on the candidate of the Labour Party. In the past, Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State and his counterpart in Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi have both taken slings at Obi, however, the pushback was swift, prompting both to recount their statements. “We will not vote for the Labour Party, we will only vote for the APC. Our vote is for APC and not for the Labour Party. Our agenda is Ebonyi agenda. We will vote for our Presidential candidate in the person of Tinubu. We must strive to liberate Ebonyi State and that is our agenda,” Umahi had said in June. However, in the past couple of weeks, the attack on Obi has intensified. It would be recalled that Chimaroke Nnamani, a former governor of Enugu State and Senatorial candidate on the platform of the PDP, had in a series of tweets in August warned his supporters not to risk voting Obi. “Our party and platform is PDP. We must stand firm. We must not be swayed by the Obidient sentiments and vote Labour Party. If we blur the distinction, it will be difficult to reverse,” the tweet read. Last week, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State joined the fray by denying the Obidient movement the use of Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium. Although the movement held a rally in the city with thousands on the street, Mr Obaseki in an interview, insisted that Mr Obi supporters may control the virtual world, but PDP controls the political structure. During the week, the biggest attack against the presidency of Obi came from his State, when Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State launched a fierce attack against him. Soludo even implied that Obi’s candidacy is a tactical support for the candidate of the APC, Bola Tinubu. “Indeed, if I were Asiwaju Tinubu, I would even give Peter Obi money as someone heading one of the departments of his campaign because Obi is making Tinubu’s pathway to victory much easier by indirectly pulling down PDP. It is what it is,” he stated. Why are politicians in the South-east, South-south against Obi ? The choice of Labour Party and the appeal to youths pose a significant threat to established political parties in the regions, Kelechukwu Eni-Otu, a member of the APC in Ebonyi State told DAILY POST. According to him, “the fact that presidential elections and the National Assembly elections are on the same day, these politicians are just trying to avoid a tsunami. “If the politicians in APC, PDP and APGA don’t react, there is a possibility that they will be affected by the Obi tsunami. We saw it in 2015 and 2019 in the North, where Buhari’s wave allowed several people to win the seats in Reps and Senate.” Soludo is believed to be working to reduce the influence of the PDP in the State, because since 2015, APGA has performed poorly at National Assembly elections. In the current 9th Assembly, APGA has no single Senator but has about three Reps members. This could be attributed to the fact that often, APGA does not present candidates for the presidential election. With Victor Umeh now in Labour teaming up with Obi, APGA may go into the election fighting against two formidable forces, PDP and Labour. In Edo State, Governor Obaseki has been in a long battle with Dan Obih’s faction for the control of the PDP structure. He was ridiculed by Governor Nyesome Wike for not having control of the delegates at the last PDP presidential primaries. Many believe that most people supporting Obi are people who ordinarily would have voted PDP. If Obi wins Edo State, it could have an effect on senatorial and House of Reps seats. In addition, there is the APC effect in Edo North, where Adams Oshiomhole is on the ballot. Hence, Obaseki and the PDP in Edo will be going up against the APC and his former political mentor, Oshiomhole, while the Labour Party is also pulling votes. The same could be said of Enugu State. For the very first time in 1999, Obi’s popularity among the youths presents the first serious litmus test for the party. And Chimaroke appears to have been spooked by the political calculations in the State. As the campaigns progress, it is expected that many political gladiators will speak out more against Peter Obi as they struggle to hold on to their respective political structures.

Attacks: I, my family being punished over comment on Peter Obi’s investment – Soludo cries Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State has raised the alarm that his family members are being harassed over his comment on Peter Obi’s investment in the state. DAILY POST recalls that the former Central Bank Governor had, during an interview, declared that the investment the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, claimed he made with Anambra State revenues were “next to nothing”. There had been series of backlashes from supporters of Obi, particularly on social media following Soludo’s comment. In an article published on his Facebook page on Monday, the Anambra governor alleged that some persons angered by his comment have launched attacks on him and his family. According to him, there were suggestions that the recent attack on security persons at Isuofia community of Aguata Local Government Area of the state where he hails from, were carried out by those provoked by his comment. According to him, “sadly, several of the comments left the issue of the interview to probe or suggest motives, inferred from my response on “investment” that I am opposed to Peter Obi’s ambition and therefore committed a “crime” for which the punishment is internecine abuse and harassment even to my family. “Some people even suggest that the gunmen who went to attack a checkpoint at my hometown on Saturday 12th November but were gunned down was part of the mob reaction. “I used to think that for decent people, certain conducts are off-limits, and that in Anambra, politics is not warfare”.

Peter Obi Left PDP Because He Has Principles, But I Will Stay And Fight The Armed Robbers -Wike. The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike has justified the decision of Peter Obi to dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the Labour Party (LP). Nyesom Wike made this disclosure while commissioning the Ikoku flyover by Peter Obi in Rivers State. According to Daily Post Nigeria, Wike noted that Peter Obi who happens to be a principled man left the party because he was humiliated in the party. It could be recalled that just about 72 hours to the PDP presidential primaries, Peter Obi dumped the party and later announced to have joined the Labour Party of which he is now the party's flagbearer in the upcoming general election. Peter Obi suffered some backlashes from prominent and influential PDP chieftains for taking such a bold step, but Nyesom Wike in Ikoku, Rivers State justified that the decision by Peter Obi was understandable and he further stressed that most politicians wouldn't have been able to sustain the kind of pressure Obi sustained. However, Nyesom Wike has pledged that he won't leave the party, but rather, he will stay to fight against anyone trying to humiliate in which he referred to as armed robbers. In his words, Wike said, “You were in our party, and I know why you left. Now let me tell you, the humiliation you suffered, I know. Most of you don’t know and nobody could bear what he passed through.” “You (Peter Obi) left PDP because you have principles, but I will stay and fight the armed robbers. I will fight the vandals, I will fight the tigers, I will fight the hyenas. I will not leave this house, I will never allow armed robbers to take over my house. I am going to stay to chase away the armed robbers,” Wike added.
