PoliticsRe: 16 Killed In Nigerian Cartoons Riots by GL(f): 3:55am On Feb 20, 2006
The Kano legislators and muslim students said ppl should boycott Danish products. Who is fooling who? Most of the products we use here are European products. Majority of Nigerians are poor and cannot exercise much control over what products they use. Plus, the majority of us don't bother to check where the products we use were made.

One of the funny and overlooked aspect of this cartoon riot is that some muslim militants, who took the cartoons round the muslim world, added more derogatory cartoons to further annoy would-be protesters. One of them is the cartoon depicting Muhammed as a pig. From what I've heard, pigs are forbidden in Islam and it is probably the worst thing one can refer to a muslim as. For a muslim to even think of depicting Muhammed as a pig shows how much disrespect he has for him. I mean, I flinch whenever I think of someone calling Jesus a homosexual and was disturbed for days after hearing it, not to think of calling him one - God Forbid! So I think muslims should fish out the militants who added those derogatory cartoons and deal with them. I can't imagine what could have prompted them to do such a thing.

I hail the Danish muslims who decided to act like humans, rational humans.

Cushman, u mentioned that the Koran demands that ppl who insult the prophet be executed. However, u must remember that in this world, non-muslims are a majority and the Koran isn't binding upon us. This is the basis of the protest against sharia, u can't judge me by muslim law when i'm not a muslim. we've got the courts and customary laws for that.
PoliticsRe: 16 Killed In Nigerian Cartoons Riots by GL(f): 3:43am On Feb 20, 2006
I'm sorry if some feel my posts here are brutal, but I'm fed up of this nonsense. I must say that I know there are many rational muslims all over the world, but at the moment, they seem to be either a minority, or a silent, too silent, majority. This isn't doing anything for the general perception of Islam. We keep hearing that Islam is a religion of peace, why all this violence? Why are Iran and other Islamic countries officially promoting this violence? What else do we base our perceptions of Islam on but the muslims and Islamic societies?

Nigeria, nay the world, has had a tradition of bending over for muslims, trying not to step on their toes. If we want to be truthful to ourselves, we know it is for fear of violence. This is very wrong and it should not be encouraged. Why must they fight at the smallest provocation. Personally, I believe that if we succumb to this fear Nigeria will become an Islamic nation. I enjoin all christians to really pray against this evil spirit of violence.

There was a movie in the US that depicted Jesus as a homosexual. This is the ultimate insult, as the bible and the church are vehemently against it. It was downright spiteful, yet there was no violence. I fear to think of what would have happened if it was Muhammed. Now, muslims are killing because someone depicted Muhammed as a terrorist. Though I think it was uncalled for, I am beginning to understand the sentiments behind those cartoons. A Jordanian (muslim) editor wrote that muslims do worse to their religion when they publish pictures of them slashing the throats of their hostages than these cartoons can do. Very true!

I would love to see statistics of all terrorists that have been rounded up so far globally. I'm almost certain, from what I hear/see/read in the media, that at least 90% of them are muslims. Foreigners very rightly associate 419 with Nigeria even though we may not constitute 90% of all offenders. Thus, I understand that someone would associate Islam with terrorism. Especially ppl who aren't used to muslims and only hear of them on the tv. Just as Nigeria is telling the world that we're not 419ers by laundering her image, and prosecuting offenders, so Islam should show that they aren't terrorists, and do not support or fund terrorism.

During the protests in Pakistan and other Islamic states, the rioters actually called on Osama Bin Laden to strike in Denmark and Europe. They called him "our man". And they say they don't support terrorism?

Robots!!!

Those muslims up north are Robots, Senseless, Idiots. This is my own opinion: Muslims all over the world are rioting and fighting over the cartoons. It has even spread to Africa - Libya. The leaders here in Nigeria are concerned that they will seem unconcerned and in a bid to please the powers that be incite the robots to riot.

I will ask again - how did we manage to be grouped as one country with these animals? They are backward in everything, yet all they think of is violence.

Cushman,

Who killed ppl and disrupted Miss Worldbcos a journalist 'insulted' Muhammed?
Who brought about sharia, which infringes upon the rights of Christians in the North?
Who burnt churches because a madman was seen tearing pages of the Koran?

now, this is the silliest,
Who killed ppl and burnt cars and churches in Nigeria because someone in Denmark, who may not even be a Christian, 'insulted' Muhammed?

Answer: Muslims, Northern Muslims.

And you say they aren't animals. Well, I don't think they qualify to be in the same class as us normal, rational ppl. They most likely have low IQs.

Sometimes I wish Nigeria could split up into North and South, then they will realize how much they benefit from us. IMO, they are simply drawbacks. I feel very bad for the christians who are locked up with such beasts. I hope the Christian Association of Nigeria and the government can do something to help them.
Christianity EtcRe: Is It True: Wearing Trouser/Pants Is Condemned In The Bible? by GL(f): 3:03am On Feb 20, 2006
My church is against women wearing trousers, using hair attachments, earrings. now they say big earrings. I believed in these things when I was younger until I realized they weren't consistent.

The objection to jewelry stems from the Israelites using gold jewelry to make an idol. However, the way I see it is - people use yam and oil for sacrifice but we still eat it. Plus, why do they allow gold wristwatches? Even Peter told women not to rely on jewelry for their beauty. That means the women in the church were using jewelry.

Foreign female ministers come wearing trousers, using jewelry, and not covering their hair!!! Yet, they are allowed to preach. If God allows it for them, why not for us?

I think the passage in Deutronomy was about transvestites or such. One thing we overlook in Nigeria is that God is loving. No one is perfect and we all depend on His mercy. No one will go to hell for wearing trousers or to heaven for not. The deciding factor will be how much we loved and put our faith in Jesus. Personally, I believe that the church should focus more on getting people to love and put their faith in Jesus. He will take care of all our weaknesses.

This issue is quite similar to the issue of circumscision that once divided the early church. The Apostles made it clear that it wasn't the issue, faith in God is. All of us come to God with our different weaknesses and backgrounds, all He requires is that we put our faith in Him and surrender our lives to Him. We can't all be the same, as we have different backgrounds. Even the apostles weren't the same.

There are some doctrines that are the foundation of Christianity, like the Virgin birth, the death and ressurection of Christ, the Trinity etc. I think we should place more emphasis on those. Those like what we eat, washing of hands, circumcision, clothing etc. should not divide us, as they aren't essential to our faith.

I read this somewhere and try to live by it :-

In essentials (doctrines), unity; in non-essentials (doctrines), liberty; in all things, charity.
PoliticsRe: 16 Killed In Nigerian Cartoons Riots by GL(f): 11:41pm On Feb 18, 2006
This is insanity. These are animals. That is why they are backward in everything. How did we get to be in the same country as them? I wish they could carve out a country for them - Sharia country. We obviously don't belong together.

They are like robots. Just because muslims in other parts of the world are fighting over a 6-month old cartoon, they are fighting. It just doesn't make sense - someone in Denmark (who might not even be a christian) drew a cartoon that offended you and you burn churches and hurt christians in nigeria.

Sorry to say this, but I'm beginning to think that these northern muslims are a LIABILITY to this country. They fight over any little religious provocation. We've got enough ethnic diversity to deal with in this country. If we're managing to stay together with over 250 tribes why are we having problems with a few religions? In Nigeria, most, if not all, the religious crises we've had are caused by muslims - in the north.  I know there are some rational ppl among them, but they are not doing anything to stop this violence.

I think the northerners need to come and learn from the Yorubas. They live together in peace, and are more progressive. The government and police must put an end to this.

A Nigerian youngster who was visiting the United Kingdom for the first time was taken to the London zoo for sightseeing. On getting to the section where monkeys are kept, he was amazed to see other tourists giving out plenty of money to the monkeys that were hopping around doing acrobatics. The more the acrobatics, the more the tourists enjoyed the show and the more the money (hard currency) the monkeys got.

This young man suddenly had an idea and when he got back to Nigeria, he started learning all kinds of acrobatics. He visited his medicine man and asked for a portion that will transform him into a monkey.

During his next visit to London, he went into the zoo and took the portion and was transformed into a monkey. He joined the other monkeys and started his own type of modern, systematic and attractive acrobatics. He soon caught the attention of all the tourists who wasted no time in showering him with plenty of pounds sterling. He was now making more money than the real monkeys.

The king of the monkeys didn't like this and challenged the new monkey to an acrobatic duel. The contest was tough and very keen but the new monkey won. The king monkey had to go on exile in shame but before he left he set a trap for the intruding monkey who now became the new king.

The next day, monkey business started as usual, with money coming in from the tourists. There was this particular tourist who really enjoyed the show that he threw a lot of money into the cage. The new king pocketed his money but to his amazement all the other monkeys threw their earnings into the adjacent cage. The new king could not comprehend this and would not allow all that money to go away like that; so he jumped into the adjacent cage to pick up the money. It was only when he got there that he realized it was a lion's cage.

The lion looked at him, looked at the money and roared and started toward the monkey who was now sweating, shaking and foaming in the mouth.

Half way, the lion suddenly stopped, looked at the monkey again and said:

"Oh boy, if no bi say we all na Naija, I for show you."

Three contractors were visiting a tourist attraction on the same day. One was from Nigeria, another from Germany, and the third from France.

At the end of the tour, the guard asked them what they did for a living.

When they all replied that they were contractors, the guard said, "Hey we need one of the rear fences redone. Why don't you guys take a look at it & give me a bid?" So, to the back fence they all went to check it out.

First to step up was the German contractor. He took out his tape measure and pencil, did some measuring and said, "Well I figure the job will run about $900. $400 for materials, $400 for my crew, and $100 profit for me."

Next was the French contractor. He also took out his tape measure and pencil, did some quick figuring and said, "Looks like I can do this job for $700. $300 for materials, $300 for my crew, and $100 profit for me."

Without so much as moving, the Nigerian contractor said, "$2,700."

The guard, incredulous, looked at him and said, "You didn't even measure like the other guys! How did you come up with such a high figure?"

"Easy," he said. "$1,000 for you, $1,000 for me and we hire the guy from France."

An American priest walked into a barber shop in Washington, D.C. After he got his haircut, he asked how much it would be. The barber said, "No charge. I consider it a service to the Lord."

The next morning, the barber came to work and there were 12 prayer books and a thank you note from the priest in front of the door.

Later that day, a British police officer on vacation came in and got his hair cut. He then asked how much it was. The barber said, "No charge. I consider it a service to the community."

The next morning, he came to work and there were a dozen donuts and a thank you note from the police officer.

Then, a Nigerian Businessman came in and got a haircut. When he was done he asked how much it was. The barber said, "If you are really a Nigerian then you don't have to pay since you are from the same country as Akeem Olajuwon the basketballer."

The next morning, the barber came to work and there were 12 Nigerians in front of his door waiting for a haircut!!!

There were three men living together in London. An Afro-American, a West Indian and a Nigerian. They were all starving because they didn't have money to buy food.

However upon coming close to a posh London restaurant in this classy neighbourhood, they decided to come up with a plan.

The Afro-American went in first. After being seated, he ordered a three course meal with white wine. When he had finished the meal, the waiter came by with the bill. "LISTEN MY MAN, I ALREADY PAID YOU!" - the Afro-American shouted! The waiter was very confused because he could not remember being paid. But because he did not want to cause any trouble, he let the brother leave.

Five minutes later, the West Indian walked into the same restaurant and ordered a five course meal with red wine. When he was finished eating, the waiter came by to collect the money for the food. "HEY, HEY, LOOK AT ME CROSSES. BUT AH PAID YOU ALREADY!" - the West Indian shouted. This time the manager came and had to calm down the West Indian, because he did not want anything to upset the other customers. He let the guy go.

Ten minutes later, the Nigerian walked in. And you know how we are. He sat down. Lit up a cigarette, and ordered the most expensive meal on the menu, plus two bottles of Guinness. After he had finished, the waiter came to collect the money for the meal, But before the Nigerian could say anything, the waiter spoke to him."Sir, I have been having all sorts of problems all day and I can't understand it. Two other people like you came in earlier and ate, and they say that they paid me but I don't remember getting any money from them so, " Before he could finish, the Nigerian interrupted, rather emphatically, "OGA I SORRY FOR YOU OOOO. BUT DAT NA YOUR PROBLEM. I JUST WANT YOU TO GIVE ME MY CHANGE!!"

A Nigerian man living in Sweden decided to marry a Swedish lady in order to be legally certified via resident status, but the lady was not aware of this. She felt he really loved her. Anyway, seeing that Nigerian men had a bad rap in that particular part of Sweden, our chap decided to lie to the lady. He told her he was from Uganda.

Upon marriage, the lady came home one day and informed our man that she had just met another Swedish lady who had married a Ugandan and they must all have dinner together.

The Naija man was somewhat perplexed, although not perceptibly, and wondered how he'd get out of this spot. He postponed and postponed until he could do so no more.

Finally, the day came when they were to have dinner. The other Swede came in with her Ugandan husband and they all sat at the table. Our Naija chappie was very quiet. "My own don spoil today" was all he could think.

The two Swedish ladies, wanting their husbands to mingle, being from the same homeland, asked them to speak to each other. "Hey! It's not every day you meet people from home.!" they admonished.

Our Naija man, being a man of great savvy, decided that he would just speak Yoruba, and the guy would probably assume he was from some part of Uganda where they spoke a different language. So looking across the table he said: "Egbon Eko ni mi se? Ni bo lo ti ja wa?" ("I'm a Lagos man. Where do you come from?"wink

The fellow looked up at our friend. His eyes lit up as he said: "Ah, bobo gan! Omo Eko ni mi se! Omo Eko gan gan!" ("Hey buddy! I'm a Lagos child. A REAL Lagos child!"wink

The Super Eagles got together, and decided on a match bonus of $15,000 per player. They then sent their captain Okechukwu Uche to Abuja (the capital of Nigeria) in order to present these demands before the NFA (National Football Association) chairman.

Upon hearing what Uche had to say, a big smile appeared on Mr. Aminu's face as he replied: "yes! but you guys must adhere to my terms and conditions."

Uche replied: ", tell me what they are and we shall consider."

Aminu then said: "we shall pay you an additional appearance fee of $500 per minute for every player; if you lose your matches like you are doing now, you get an extra $5000 for your efforts; plus an all expenses paid trip to France 98 for all you families and friends!"

Uche: "Wow! you must be kidding!!"

Aminu: "Yes, but you started it."

Two friends, a Nigerian and a Japanese, graduated from an American university and went to work their respective countries. Ten years later, the Nigerian went to Japan to visit his friend. His friend met him at the airport and took him to his house. He was surprised to see a mansion, with two BMW 5-series vehicles parked in front of the mansion. He asked his friend, the Japanese, how he’d gotten so wealthy. The Japanese pointed to the highway they had left behind. He said, “See that, 10%”.

One year later the Japanese came to Nigeria to return the visit. His friend, the Nigerian, met him at the airport and took him to his house. He was surprised to see a big palace, with two BMW 6-series, two hummer Jeeps and two Lincoln Navigators parked in front of the palace. He was so shocked, he couldn’t say anything – he could only point. The Nigerian then pointed to the road they had left behind. He said, “See that, 100%”. The Japanese was very puzzled, as all he saw was a bush.

It seems we're agreed on the fact that Harry Potter encourages witchcraft - the main question here.

As to whether it is right or wrong to read witchcraft/magical stuff, I guess it all boils down to our personal religious beliefs. I, being a christian, look at it from the biblical perspective and the bible is against witchcraft. As the bible holds a different definition of witchcraft from you, it doesn't contradict itself.

Christianity EtcMotivational Speaking In The Church??? by GL(op): 2:41am On Feb 16, 2006
Do you think it is right for people, particularaly unbelievers, to leave their houses on Sundays and all the sermon they hear is motivational speaking? Christian/Biblical inputs please.

My View:-

I know many ppl do not share this view, but I do not think that this motivational speaking is doing much for christianity. I think it is killing it. I'm not against motivational speaking, but not in the church on a Sunday morning. I think it is great for the church to invite christian motivational speakers to hold seminars for members at other times. Sunday morning should be a time to focus on God. Motivational speaking focuses too much on oneself, while christianity is all about God.

One sunday in church we had a guest preacher. The first thing he said was that we should be ready to write a lot because he had a lot of quotes for us. Then he began, he quoted Ghandi, Clinton, Bill Gates, and a lot of other political and business figures. Of course he quoted T.D. Jakes, Oyedepo etc. but there were lots of the former. He read portions of a book, 'Rich Dad and Poor Dad' in addition to some references to the bible. I've never read the book so I dont know if it is a christian or secular book. But I still think it is wrong. From the bible, we see that they read portions of the bible and explained it during their services. The bible reading part of services are now just for old-times sake. We seem to feel motivational books would draw more ppl than the bible.

What happened to the power in the Word of God?

Yes, someone did. Check the first page.

The person who said it here might have been joking, but I hear/see it a lot in church. They use terms like our "rivals, competitors" in referring to others.
We (RCCG members) are usually so concerned about being the biggest and fastest growing church.

i'm not against the RCCG, only against this competition spirit i've seen. i think it is a distraction. now, u may not see it in ur area (i've heard someone say there's d least competition in the Apapa parishes) but i see plenty of it in my area.
Christianity EtcRe: Jesus Prophesied and Warned: Paul is False Prophet/Messiah by GL(f): 2:13am On Feb 16, 2006
As Gbade said, Christianity and Islam are not at all the same. We believe very different things. Christians are not just ppl who go to church (those are church-goers), Christians are ppl who have decided to surrender their lives to Jesus. Christians accept the bible as God's Word - authoritative and absolute. FYI, Paul was in the congregation were Jesus' followers were first called Christians (Acts 11:26), he actually taught there. So he is a follower of Jesus, like every other christian.

Not only pentecostal churches accept the teachings of Paul. ALL Christians do because we accept the teachings of the bible. see my above definition of christianity. Of course, ppl tend to prefer one book to the other but all christians accept the authority of the whole bible. Paul wrote the largest number of books by any one person in the bible (about 1/5 of the bible) and anyone who doesnt accept his authority doesn't accept the bible and CAN'T be a christian. I've been to Anglican, Catholic and Baptist churches they accept his teachings. I'm certain that Methodists and Lutherans do too.

I don't know your Islamic beliefs, but I believe that in Islam you've got something good to look and work towards. Don't you think you're wasting your precious time trying to get some inconsequential stuff out of the bible. These things do not make you a better muslim or take you any closer to paradise. Remember, you've not got all the time on your hands so while you're alive make the best use of ur life - read the Koran, give to the poor - anything. Just do something useful.

Christianity EtcRe: What's Your Religion? by GL(f): 1:29am On Feb 16, 2006
hello papermoon,

i've heard several stories of abuse by pastors like yours. i think it is really bad. Jesus already passed a judgement against anyone who would make a child lose his/her faith. He said it would be better to hang a millstone on their neck and drown in the sea. I share in this sentiment.

While I did not experience any form of sexual abuse, several things happened that left me very much disillusioned with christianity/religion at a young age due to certain things i saw happening in the church. i began to slip away but i thank God He didn't let me go. because as a child, I had some personal experiences and had the christian value system built into me, I couldn't really go wild so ppl didnt realize i was slipping away. Looking back, however, I realize I was sort of bitter because I felt God fell short of my expectations.

One day, while going thru some of my childhood journals/diaries where i had written some of those personal experiences, i was struck with this thought: "the God I knew then was different". That thought kept tugging at my mind. I was passing thru some problems and somehow realized I needed God. I surrendered to Him again.

Now, I've come to realize that the problem was that as a child, i had associated certain religious personalities with God. Yes, I had experienced Him some time but I still thought of Him in relation to certain people. When this ppl disappointed me, I felt God had disappointed me.

During the time when I strayed away, I met a lot of ppl who had had several problems - their pastors had disappointed them and they had lost interest in God as a result. Now, I try to make them see God separately from humans. God has no grandchildren, we're all His children. He wants us to come to Him directly, not thru humans.

I've decided that I'm going to be a sunday school teacher so I can help children really know God at a personal level. The experiences I had as a child made it hard for me to go into some things I might have gone into. If I had known and loved God personally and not associated Him with pastors, I wouldn't have slipped away in the first place.
EducationRe: Schooling In The US: Getting Student Visa by GL(f): 1:03am On Feb 16, 2006
I also experienced this student visa problem, I was denied. My I-20 was genuine, I had a scholarship but I was denied. My scholarship wasn't full though, and I had a sponsor who was willing to pay the rest. Maybe that's what they didn't like. They asked me a few questions though, like:

my name

why i chose the particular school i did - i told them because it is a christian school

what i plan to do after my first degree (biology/premed) - i told them i wanted to go on to medical school there.

why i got the scholarship - i said because i did well on the SAT (1410)

then he asked to see my SSCE results, i showed him. he looked at it for about a minute, or more, then said he was sorry,

thinking back, maybe i didn't answer some questions right. like i shouldn't have said i wanted to go on to med. school. but that was the truth. i felt they should know that one can't go and do premed and come back here. it would be a waste of time. Someone told me that there are certain courses you do (especially those with high salaries there) and they don't believe you'll come back. i'm not sure how true this is.

UK is good but there are no scholarships, the same with Canada.

LiteratureRe: Does Harry Potter Encourage Witchcraft? by GL(f): 3:03am On Feb 15, 2006
Looking at it from the bible's perspective,

Actually the Old Testament was written before Jesus came to the world and witchcraft is condemned there.

Biblically, witchcraft is using any other power apart from God's. Jesus did all He did thru' God's power so that is NOT witchcraft. He already answered that question in Luke 11.

I remember my parents not allowing me to read certain books because they felt they contained magical stuff. But I was a bookworm and ended up reading many such books.
Cindarella, Sleeping Beauty have magical tones too. And I know ppl whose parents didn't even let them read those.

Harry Potter, however, doesn't just talk about a fairy or witch casting a spell on someone. It portrays the everyday life of a witch as normal, as a matter of fact, the normal ppl are the ones who aren't normal in Harry Potter - muggins or so.

2face is great, however I think most of his success can be attributed to his producers. Of all the songs that were released during that period, his song was the most promoted (whichever was second was a distant second).

Kennis Music aside, 2Face might have been pretty ordinary

Faze's songs didn't get half as much promotion, yet he's very popular. I believe he's better than 2face - nicer voice
