dirifred: GOOD STEPS IN RIGHT DIRECTION. CHANGING THE NATION FOR THE BETTER IS NOT AUTOMATIC, IT CAN ONLY COME THROUGH STEPS IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

Can we start looking at international news with objectivity. What is good news here? Upgrading our status, so that we can have more borrowing window, then they can share from the national cake by our indebtedness? Madam NOI pleaded for our debt pardon years ago, now they are offering us lifeline to be pulled back into slavery.

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: On Interview, How Do I Answer The Salary Question? by globechamp: 1:28pm On Apr 15, 2013
@yemmight, thanks for the insight.

For me,

I always SELL MYSELF to the point where they would have made a decision. I always package myself from the start. Excellent looking CV, very brief and straight to the point cover letter, adequate knowledge of the responsibilities, roles and challenges of the new job, all developed and developing relevant skill sets I have, very good background research on the company and the current projects they are working on and by the way, I am a good talker.

Secondly, I do a research on the average industry rate for that position. Compared to my current annual salary at my present place of work, I compute an after tax minimum monthly amount I cannot take anything less, I increase the annual gross with a premium band that is negotiable. By the time I arrive at that question in an interview, I already have a figure, below which I will walk away if what is offered is anything significantly below (if its a bit below, I can consider it)

Also, I always let them know that the reason why I am negotiating a fair price is because I will never have that opportunity again. Please please, do not overprice yourself because that could hurt, and secondly, please do not undervalue yourself because it is from that point that your increment, salary review and promotion will begin onward. It feels very bad when you eventually discover that some less qualified or even your subordinates are earning better than you just because you didnt negotiate right. I am speaking from experience and I have promised myself never to make that mistake again in life. (MOST FIRMS IN NIGERIA DO NOT HAVE SALARY STRUCTURE. YOU CAN FIND PEOPLE ON THE SAME ROLE EARNING SIGNIFICANTLY DIFFERENT SALARIES, SO PLEASE NEGOTIATE RIGHT)

Remember, it is always a 50/50 game. No matter how low your request is, that doesnt mean the firm will choose you at the end of the day. If you are truly bringing a lot of value to the table, even if your amount is a bit higher than what they pay your role, the firm will be willing to take the risk.

ALL THE BEST

Kindergaten/Creche, Nursery School,Primary School, Secondary School

Is it possible to go through Tertiary institution without nursery, primary and most importantly secondary education?
Stating your university/polytechnic/college of education is most times a great indication that you went to secondary school.

Unless your secondary school has a heavy weight (e.g. like Loyola, Kings College, Queens College etc) which you are likely trying to explore to connect to the recruiter(possibly that's his or her alma mater), having creche, nursery, primary and secondary school you attended is not exactly useful on your cv. These are some of the items that make some applicants' CV almost 4 pages, thinking the longer the better (the longer may be better if you are applying to academic institutions though).

Once again, all the best in your job search.

Happy easter celebration.
Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Ideas for Cover Letter & CV Writing by globechamp: 7:03am On Mar 27, 2013
Sex, tribe, local government

Use of sex, tribe and local government/state of origin are not in anyway relevant on the cv anymore, unless you are applying for government vacancies. If you are really proud of your tribe, you could include it as additional information that you can speak fluently yoruba, igbo, hausa, efik, fulani etc (this could be a plus if you are applying for customer service jobs. I was once informed by a friend who works with one of the telecoms firms when they were looking for someone who could speak chinese. by the ways, a friend of mine that studied YORUBA in the university got a customer service job in one of the biggest nigerian banks).

Except it is otherwise stated, leave sex, tribe, local govt/state of origin out of your cv and save that space for more weightier information that will sell you to the recruiter as the best candidate...

Cheers and all the best

omidan21: Thanks for your contribution towards this post.I would like you to respond promptly to my question.I intend to start submitting my CV in the hardcopy format that is going to companies and also giving some of my boig uncles and aunts my CV handy, what's the best way you thnk I can pacakage my CV.do I fold it in the normal sized white envelop,or I use an A4 brown envelop,do I put the CV and Cover letter in a seperate envelop all of these questions keeps runniong through my mind.please I need your positive and urgent response.God bless you, thank You

If you are doing a physical submission, I personally will not do anything less than an executive looking A4 paper size envelope because I will not fold my CV AT ALL. Have you ever gotten a letter through UPS or DHL before? Do you see how clean the envelope, address and packaging looks?

Package your application as if you are sending it to the president of the United States of America. Even if it cost you 1,000 naira to get the right clean, white envelope, professionally addressed (dont ever write your address with pencil, marker, biro or pen, make sure you address is printed)(just saying), make sure your application APPEARS PROFESSIONAL, CLEAN, PRESENTABLE and JOB - LANDING.

Travel / Re: The Journey From Accra To Lagos By Road. by globechamp: 3:07pm On Mar 12, 2013
I tried Accra - Lagos FIRST and LAST time in 2012, thinking I will feast my eyes and have fun. I have vowed never to try it again unless I am driving myself. It was an absolute, absolute waste of time. Can you explain arrival at Seme border around 7pm and landing at Yaba (cross country bus) around 12am?

On a positive note though, when you travel through Benin Republic, Togo and towards the exit of Aflao, you will sincerely thank God that you are a Nigerian. When we drove through those countries, I was like, is there a sitting government in this part of the world? Civilization is FAR AWAY. Power is so obvious. Roads through Togo are very bad (I went during rainy season), in fact, I was glad I am Nigerian because I saw first hand that some nations nearby are worse off.

I guess those ECOWAS people dont even have a clue what the situation of that road is. I hope Nigerian government will wake up to their responsibility someday...

In the one page should it include your referees?

I will say YES and it depends on your approach.

When I did my own CV makeover, I researched about 200 cvs of people who went to top-notch ivy league schools in the world and I see our best business school(I guess you can guess what school, if you are objective enough grin)in Nigeria teaching their MBA grads to do the same (I checked their cvs and same 1 page so I thought there is wisdom in learning from their approach).

Shockingly, their cvs had no references in most cases, never exceeded one page and was straight to the point. What they normally have is "available upon request". In my case, I only insert references when I am applying to Nigerian companies, but when applying to multinationals or companies with local presence in Nigeria, I simply put AVAILABLE ON REQUEST. Before you contest me, please bear in mind that I have my own strategies of job seeking and the kind of jobs I look for has its own strategy of candidate evaluation rather than references. Thats a subject for another day.

Most importantly, develop a job seeking strategy that works for you, that you will continue to fine tune, learn and improve as you progress.

I personally believe you cant keep doing what everyone is doing and expect a different result. You have to find a carefully research differentiation strategy that will work FOR YOU.

We need to understand that the aim of your cv is to get the attention of the recruiter. Your best strategy/challenge is HOW TO GET THE RECRUITER's ATTENTION.

Once again, ALL THE BEST.

Good job @assalaamat and @adewasco

just to add a few cents

If it is possible and if permitted, it is preferable that you save your cv in pdf format. The reason why sometimes candidates dont get a response is that, your well prepared cv could appear messed up on the other side because of Microsoft office compatibility, fonts etc (some PCs dont have the font used for the cv and so will either distort the cv or wont open at all). While I agree that the standard presentation of a cv should be in Arial or Times New Roman, sometimes, some other fonts make could make your cv appear better and cleaner. That was when I changed my approach. When I used pdf, the CV will appear EXACTLY to the recruiter the way I prepared it.

Secondly, since last year, I have decided that my cv will never exceed 1 page. It took me weeks to summarize everything about myself to be able to fit into a single page. There are too many cvs to peruse, so what are the chances that the recruiter will scroll down. I decided to help them simplify their jobs. However, your 1 page CV MUST be ON POINT - neatly laid out, not cramped, and must give a concise summary of you background and your experience. Remember whatever you write must be relevant to the NEED of the recruiter.

What I shared above actually did improve the responses I have gotten since I decided to.
Remember, finding a job is a job in itself.

Let me stop here for now.

All the best guys

Your career path is unclear. You work in an oil and gas firm, seeing yourself in an oil and gas firm, moving into oil and gas banking into politics as a minister/perm sec. Does that even make sense to you?
Exams is a waste of resources if you dont know where you are headed.

I guess you should figure that out first and question yourself before seeking NL advise

Can I ask you a question?

What do you want to do with your lifetime? If you want to become a lecturer, then PhD is definitely indispensable.
Career / Re: I Am A Bit Disillusioned. Help Please. by globechamp: 6:34am On Feb 20, 2013
I feel your dilemma.

Firstly, PRAY. Let God direct your footsteps.

Secondly, You have to focus on what you have to do. Life is in phases. You have to depend on people for stipends until you are able to stand on your own feet, whether you like it or not.

Thirdly, dont waste your energy on a PhD that you dont need. Do you really want to build a music school? Do you have the wherewithal to do that? Have you worked out how you need to start earning money to take care of yourself, so that you dont depend on people for too long.

Lastly, nothing is certain. Nobody can assure you a job or not. You just have to trust God and have primary, secondary and tertiary plans (I mean Plan A, Plan B and C).

Theres is no point wasting your time, DO WHAT YOU LOVE TO DO AND WHAT WILL GIVE YOU FULFILLMENT IN LIFE.

@shakaz

From what I understand, you are caught betwixt 200 level Pharmacy Uniport vs Engineering at OAU. The answer is pretty simple. It is not how far but how well. If engineering is where you have determined and are passionate about, please dont be too proud to ditch your Pharmacy and go for what you love. If you miss this opportunity, you will never regain it again. You are still young and its better for you to start your career life on a good footing. Would you rather be a frustrated accredited pharmacist? Will you prefer to go for what will make you happy for life?
The most important question you must ask yourself is WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO WITH YOUR LIFE. That will determine what you should choose. Whatever your decision is, you alone will face the consequences. The ball is in your court.
Computers / Apple Dishes Out 128GB Ipad; Available Early February by globechamp: 4:22pm On Jan 29, 2013
Apple today announced a 128GB version of the fourth generation iPad, which boasts a Retina display and with double the maximum storage.
Apple will now offer a 128GB iPad 4 with Retina display. (Credit: Apple)

Rumors began to swirl last week that the Cupertino, Calif.-based technology giant would dish out a new tablet with increased storage capacity, but it was thought on the most part that the device would be rolled out during the March refresh of tablets—or that the rumors were bunk.

Instead, Apple took to the wires to announce the new tablet today, which complements the existing 16GB, 32GB and 64GB tablets in the iPad 4 range.

It also comes a day after Apple released the latest version of its mobile operating system, iOS 6.1, which includes support for the 128GB storage model, further support for more 4G LTE markets including Nordic states and Middle Eastern countries, and a range of security fixes.

Apple vice president of marketing Phil Schiller said in prepared remarks:

With more than 120 million iPads sold, it’s clear that customers around the world love their iPads, and everyday they are finding more great reasons to work, learn and play on their iPads rather than their old PCs. With twice the storage capacity and an unparalleled selection of over 300,000 native iPad apps, enterprises, educators and artists have even more reasons to use iPad for all their business and personal needs.”

Apple focused on the enterprise market in its announcement this morning to note that 85 percent of the Fortune 500 companies are currently deploying or testing the tablet. The firm noted that many companies are "regularly utilizing large amounts of data such as 3D CAD files, X-rays, film edits, music tracks, project blueprints, training videos and service manuals," and that the increased storage capacity would benefit these industries.

On a security note, the iPad has one of the greatest mobile device management (MDM) feature sets, allowing enterprises and businesses to lock down the device, enabling the highest level of security.

The new 128GB iPad 4 model will be available in black and white from February 5. The Wi-Fi version of the tablet will cost $799, while Wi-Fi + Cellular will cost $929, an 15 percent and 12 percent increase respectively on the previously highest storage capacity devices.

My mind is open to any brand that fits, as I am of the opinion that if you take good care of any car, it will serve you for as long as it can. I know most people will advise Honda and Toyota but I am sure German cars always win when it comes to balance at top speed because they are mostly Rear Wheel Driven.

N:B, am a 2.1 graduate in Economics

Very candidly, I for one, will DEFINITELY get the access bank job. To me, the Net Present Value of work experience, especially with the current situation of the economy, is GREATER than a masters degree. You may go for your masters degree, but know for SURE that you will come back after the masters into an ENTRY LEVEL job, if you are lucky to find one.
It is much better to have work experience (MINIMUM of 3 years is safe enough), then go for your msc. Remember, MSc will always be there for you to grab, but JOB? no guarantees.

Most importantly, let God lead you in your decision.

All the best.
