VenumX: Nice one.
Is there an alternative to sugar besides honey? Does popcorn made with honey taste ok?
I ask cause I don't like honey at all. I have used only sugar, and the one of caramel where you heat the sugar, butter, milk and oil separately before adding to the already popped corn. I don't know how honey will come out. It might change the colour of the pop corn a bit. You can try it and lets know how it came out. Add the honey the time you were supposed to add the sugar. I don't know of any other sweetener alternative. |

semitunde: Well, this is simply according to your experience. Guguru is popcorn. The fact that it isn't well made doesn't change its name. And I can say this because is grew up producing it commercially as a family business.
A brief personal history:
The type of corn that pops wasn't sourced locally. It was mostly imported. In the 80s, importation was normal as people could choose to buy local or imported stuff . The change in quality (i.e. some corn not popping) came when government tried to ban the importation in the 80s (Buhari era). The local alternatives were not as good in popping as the imported ones. But we never called the local one a different name. Both types were guguru.
We later packed up production when we realized the local variant wasn't yielding enough profits as the imported ones.
It's sad remembering how this country kills businesses. The machine we used in making the popcorn was imported. Automatic. When it gets to the right popping temperature, it automatically moved the pot away from the heater and pours the popped corn out, pass it to the batching and sealing machine, and loads another fresh batch for heating. It did all these with little human help.
Unfortunately, the machine couldn't operate with our local corn that doesn't pop at particular temperatures. Machine was left to rot and spoil. By the time the ban was removed by another government, the machine had gone to waste. End of that business. Quiet a sad story! Some people say, may Nigeria never happen to you. But its the only country we have as our own. It is well. |

mariahAngel: Guguru are like popcorn, but they don't fully pop, making them a bit harder to chew (more like toasted corn). They're best eaten with groundnuts. Oh, we call it unpopedcorn here I don't like eating it at all. It's too hard and aches my jaw. |

Well, he can answer for himself, but no room for snake meat in this popcorn. Only 3 ingredients of corn, oil and sugar needed. |

Originalsly: Why would you want to shove this kind mouth watering finger linking meat pie in our face??...some women really love to torment men .... and scatter family. Imagine Emeka seeing this sumptuous in your face meat pie ... and reflecting on what his wife made with her own two hands and served him ... why would he not think she was to poison him?... slowly? ... all because of what you posted. Your presentation is very good!... but to be honest.. I have absolutely no interest in how to make it.... all my interest is in the eating ... and in ehmmm..... can we chat privately?... I want to find out something? Oga Emeka should take it easy with the wife ooo. He should show her cooking videos and empower her to learn and make them for him. Thank you. |

armyofone: I like trying new ways of making pie. Please can you change the flour and butter to lbs or cups - thanks. Trying new ways sort of makes you an expert. It makes you know what works and what doesn't works, or what works better. For the best Meat pies, every 1 kilo of flour equals 500g of margarine or cooking butter. So, when you are making more or less, you multiply or divide accordingly. I used half kilo of flour which is 4 cups. I also used 250g of cold cooking butter which is 1 cup + 1 teaspoon. The cups are measuring cups oooo More details in the video. I hope this helps. |

Adakintroy: Thank you mode. In times of great difficulties the best you can do is recite educative informative thread. So that those who are smart and wiling can learn a thing or two. I remember learning to cook afang from home through YouTube. Why people don't take time to learn meaningfully things is reason for poverty not government alone.
Do what is better on your part... If you do it well enough nairaland may reclaim some of its old glory as meaningfully positive contributor to social progress. Thank you so much. There is so much we can learn online. The world has really gone digital. Unfortunately, many youths have not recognized this. |
