By bigfrancis21( m): 12:20pm On Jun 03, 2013 Someone might need this: TO PROSPECTIVE GRE AND TOEFL TEST TAKERS: It is no longer a hidden fact that GRE and TOEFL test takers in Nigeria cannot register for the test online. Even someone registering on your behalf from abroad is banned once the test taker would still be writing in Nigeria. Well, I have good news for you. Are you aware that you could still register for the exam by yourself, fast and at the lower official ETS test fee? All you need to do is simply call ETS and register! Its that simple. Just as you can call to schedule a visa appointment, so can you call to register for your GRE/TOEFL test! If saving money is your priority, rather than wasting N50,000 needlessly on GRE agents and enriching their bank accounts when you could simply do it yourself at the cheaper official GRE price of $185(N29600) or at $175(N28,000) for TOEFL, then this option is best for you. To register, you'll need the following: 1) Your GRE account login details on the ETS website. If you don't have an account already, quickly visit http://www.ets.org/gre to create your account. For TOEFL, you'll need your TOEFL account login details on the ETS website. If you don't have an account already, quickly visit http:// www.ets.org/toefl to create your account. 2) A valid GTB MasterCard. I can't really vouch for other types of debit cards because I've not used them before. However, I'm sure of GTB MasterCard because it never fails to work. Take note of the 16- digit card number printed on the front of the card, the expiry date (month and year) also embossed on the front of the card and lastly, the c.v.v code, which is the 3-digit code printed on the back of your ATM card. Have these details handy because you'll need to provide them to the agent to enable them make the payment over there for you. Of course, I need not remind you that you must have funds of, at least, the registration fee amount in your account for a successful payment. After you must have done the above, then you're ready to go. Call the ETS Registration Center on +31320239593 . That is the phone number of the ETS Registration center or Region 9 located in Netherlands and it is the ETS center, out of the 12 regional registration centers worldwide, in charge of registering Nigerians for TOEFL and GRE. Once you call, you'll hear the voice prompt and wait to be connected to the next available customer agent. Once you're connected, the agent will ask you for your login details which will enable him log into your account and register you over there by himself. First, you'll be asked for these details - first name, middle name, surname, address, date of birth, phone number, email address, preferred test center number and test date. Second, comes the payment stage. At this stage you'll provide the agent with your ATM card details to enable him/ her key in the data and make the payment himself. Once successful, you'll be told by the agent and also receive an email immediately containing your examination e-ticket. PS: Be sure to recharge, at least, N750 credit on your phone as you'll be spending some good quality time on the call (15-20 minutes). Please, this is in no way a scam but rather, its one of the valid means of registering for the GRE or TOEFL test as you'll see stated on the ETS website: http://www.ets.org/gre/revised_general/register/ cbt/ http://www.ets.org/toefl/ibt/register? WT.ac=toeflhome_ibtregister_121127 However, only a few people know about this easy and cheap means. Two noble members from this forum registered successfully on Friday and this morning after telling them about it. Success. http://www.ets.org/s/mygre/rrc.html www.ets.org/s/toefl/pdf/toefl_ibt_rrcs_11-12.pdf |
Hope you guys are adjusting. I hope you get enough fun because that camp, arguably, is the toughest camp in the country. |
Rapsainot: English has been a lay back in my previous exams....... Just render any help you can...... YOUR HELP WILL BE HIGHLY APPRECIATEDSorry about that, sir. What are the challenges you seem to be having? I don't want to take a shot in the dark by just rendering any help, sir. Anything you feel you need to know and we are on. However, when I have the time, I'm still going to give some sorts of 'tricks' to answering questions in O Level English. I just hope I get one past question around me here, because I don't really know what the questions look like again. |
Oga Yokiti, God bless you. Sir, saying you that you are one of the finest MODs on Nairaland won't be strange to many of us here. You are a perfect gentleman. Sir, when you need the help of man, nations will rise to your aid. You shall never know a perfect yesterday. Morning by morning, blessings from yonder are yours. Dear Prospective Gentlemen Corps Members, Go and make positive impacts. Service year isn't forever, before you know it, you are done. It's a price we all must pay to the fatherland, be proud of your khaki and crested best whoever you rock it. Carry yourselves with dignity and don't contribute to the woes of Nigeria. Importantly, have fun and be humble. You won't be the first to serve, and you are most likely not going to be the last. Enjoy the year, for you only serve once. When you get to that daunting stage during the year, let this be your push: I only serve once, amma make it worth it. Add values and don't be too moody not to integrate with the locals. NYSC is for national integration, enjoy it. If you see that Hausa, Igbo, Youruba, Edo, Tiv, etc. babe/guy that suites your taste marry him/her, NYSC go reward you for that. Don't be promiscuous and don't take advantage of your students or people around you. Bliss, friends. To those of us traveling, journey mercies. No power of darkness will overpower that of light in you, never! None of you here shall be mourned. Wherever you are coming from or going, Christ will go before you. A o ni sile te oo... Ire oooooo. |
Footlocker: Please those of you who had made purchases once again I thank you!Smart you, bro. Love your spirit. Enterpreneaurers are gods! Would PM you one of these days. |
cumz: great work sir...Summarization is arguably one of the easiest aspects of O Level English. When you are asked to summarize, you are expected to brilliantly reduce the size of a text without losing its meaning. For instance, if I ask you to summarize the Nigeria National Anthem into one one sentence, I'm expecting you to tell me what the anthem is all about. For me, the summary of our anthem in one sentence would be something like: A call to patriotism. Importantly, it is good you know that when summarizing, there is no fixed answer to how a summary of a piece should look like. It is a subjective thing. By subjective, I mean that how you summarize a piece could be different from how youe friend will. Just make sure the message is not tampered with. So, my own summary of our anthem is "A call to patriotism." Someone else could say "A call to serve.", "A call to chilvary.", etc. From these variations, what have you noticed? Patriotism is substituted with other synonymous words. And this brings us to our next point. Please be informed that synonyms/antonyms/pronouns, deletion, etc. are important tools in summarization. They are used to avoid redundancy or unnecessary repetitions of some words.(This is one of the hallmarks of summarization.) Let us now look at this example: Tola is a very caring girl. She has a the hearth of an angel, and this is perhaps why people want to share their problem with Tola. Tola is the perfection of beauty and love. Tola has made me understood that we make a living by what we get but we make a life by what we give. Assuming you have been told to summarize this into two sentences, the first thing you should do is to look at any repeated word and find a substitute for it. So, first, instead of repeating 'Tola', you can substitute it with a pronoun, (words used instead of a noun). After that you can ow try to identify the core message of the piece and start your summary. This, for me, would be summarized as: To is a caring lady. She is loved by mamh because she cares. Let me just tell you that the first thing you should do is to understand the passage. This is very important. You can't summarize what you don't know. Once you know what the passage is about, you can now use your own words to summarize without distorting the meaning of the passage. Let me tell you again, summarization is subjective don't be afraid to be creative when summarizing but you must not deviate or distort meanings. Hope this helps. Don't hesitate to ask more questions if you are still confused. ***Please, excuse any typo. cc Pprovost |
cumz: great work sir...Sure. I will after service. Pleasant Sunday to you all. |
sacrono: the use of 'who' and 'whom'.. pls expatiateIt is important for you to know that they are both pronouns. 'Who' mostly functions as the subject in a sentence. A subject in a sentence is the person or thing that is influencing the verb (or action) in the sentence. It cines before the Predicator (Verb). Example: 1. Who is there? S. P. A. (Subject. Predicator. Adverbial.) 'Whom' is used as the object of a verb. It cones after the Predicator (verb). An Object is like the receiver of an action and some prepositions like to, by, for, etc. are used occasionally with 'whom'. Examples: 2. To whom | was | it |given? O. P. S. P. The example above can be rephrased to be: a. It |was given |to whom? S. P. O. b. It | was given| to Ali. S. P. O. c. It | was given| him. S. P. O. Here is a trick, if you see a question and you can answer it with 'him' or 'her' use whom and if you can answer with s/he, use who. Look at these: 3. To [who/whom] shall we give? Our answer here can be him/her, hence 'whom'. If you also notice it, you will see that the question starts with a preposition. Isn't it? 4. [Who/whom] saw the snake? Here, we can say s/he and not 'him' or 'her'. a. S/he saw the snake. So the best option is 'who'. Hope this is understood. If still confused, let me know. |
I won't feel it is superstitious to believe in it. The whole idea behind the whole belief is for one not to inflict pain on the elderly ones. The whole idea is to be respectful when dealing with the aged. For me, I believe one should also be kind to and respect those we are older than. Some pikins dey if them swear for you... |
Pprovost: Bro you must be a very nice man to stay awake this late so that you can answer our questions... May people always leave their comfort zone to favour you in Jesus' name....Good night sirAmen, sir. God bless you. |
Pprovost: Thanks sirExactly, you get it. I won't mind taking you deeper into English verb forms but since I don't know what you have been thought before. God's best. |

Rapsainot: where to use "been" & being?...... Thanks in advanceTo understand this, what we use to determine the tense of verb in a sentence is to check if the action is completed. Usually, a past or perfect verb form denotes a completed action or a state or habitual action which began in the past. So to your question, both words are participles of verb 'be'. 'Been' (be+ed) is the past participle, while 'being' (be+ing) is the present. Primarily, 'been' + have/has/had is used to tell of a 'state' or experience of a place or something. Consider the examples below: 1. State I have been good. They have been phenomenal. 2. Experience of a Place or Something I have been to Ghana. They have been to Kenya. She has been to Sambisa. The strike had been called off. Please note that the examples above are in different perfect tenses which I would t want to bore you about. 'Being' on the other hand is the present participle that can be used in the continues/progressive or present tense or passive voice. You also use it to basically express a state. Consider these: 1. She is being kind. 2. They are being silly. 3. They were being intimidated. Example three is not a perfect tense because it indicates a continuous action in the past. We don't know if it was a completed action. It's quite different from this: 4. They were intimidated. (Past perfect tense) Simply put, 'been' is past; 'being' is continuous. One important thing in grammar is to read beautiful literary texts for one's development. I hope it helps. If you have more questions or confused still, do let me know. NB: Pls, excuse all typos - if any. |
I'm a graduate of English. If you have any question in English Language or Literature-in-English , endeavor to beckon (mention) on me. Best wishes as you prepare. |

ebdib: Dude. Stay out of my mentions We are saying the same thing, sir. Your "Dude. Stay out of my mentions." asserts one fact: you are proud to a fault. As you can see, I'm not the only one curious to know if Boston University is no more a "solid" school. You bleeped by what you said and now you are getting emotional. One needs the patience of Job to make people like you learn the art of humility. Poor boy! ![]() |
ebdib: Whoever you areLOL. Oga, no b fight. Why not enlighten us instead of choosing not to engage me. That is mediocrity. I hate it when people fail to argue as intellectuals. I'm an advocate of peace and I'm not in anyway forcing my opinion on you, bro. But wait o Mr ebdib, so Boston University is not a "solid" school again? Thank God you informed us! Thank God say we ma sef sabi read for naija... |
