The federal government has asked governors to provide at least 300 beds in their respective states, "in the event of an increase in the novel coronavirus pandemic (Covid-19) spread across the country."

Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said this in Abuja on Friday when he informed the government of Nigeria’s efforts to curb the disease at a forum of the Nigeria News Agency (NAN).

Mohammed, a member of the Presidential Coronavirus Task Force, said the facilities would serve as isolation centers and intensive care
units for Covid-19 patients.


He said while testing for the virus was centralized, it was difficult to move people who do positive tests across states.

“The governors shouldn't wait for a flood of patients before making preparations.

"We do not ask them to build hospitals, but if they have facilities that can be remodeled, such as hotels or conference centers, let us know and we will come and accredit them.

"We will tell them what equipment they would need and what type of training we will give as support," he said.

The minister welcomed the co-operation that the task force had previously received from the states in the fight against the disease and assured Nigerians that the federal government would continue to take the lead and set the policy.

He also expressed optimism that the government would take advantage of covid-19's experience to further develop health care facilities in the country.

"We sincerely pray that we won't make the same mistake after fighting Ebola, and we relaxed.

“We intend to take the opportunity to use this corona virus to improve our healthcare system at the federal, state and local levels.

“Nobody ever thought that what is worse than Ebola will come. The successes we have achieved so far have been achieved through technology and data sharing with WHO, the United States' center for disease control, ”he said.

Nigeria has registered six new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 190.

The Nigerian Center for Disease Control (NCDC) announced on Friday that the cases were registered in Osun state.
