Or you can not read two pivots, One shields, one moves. So, showing two pivot positions has no way of disproving a fact. Why not circle the point where Etebo got fouled on the left wing? I get it, it will blow your argument apart.
I can also circle the when Onazi was hacked down on the right wing. It doesn't prove he played a box to box role.
You don't read the formation a team plays when they are with the ball, you read formation when they aren't with the ball.

By the way, you jumped on the argument without following it from the head.

Leading up to the chance benteleb hacked over the bar Mickael2 claimed Onazi should have done better with the marking, I asked him where was Etebo durring the action, he almost said Etebo wasn't supposed to be there. That's where this argument started. Don't lecture me on how a dual pivot works.

I do wonder why you just dont wanna concede that you're wrong on this.

Etebo was everywhere in midfield and only joined Onazi because of his workrate and super marking abilities also.... He joined Onazi when we were in off-the-ball situations..... But he never remained with Onazi when we were on the ball and moving on the attack...

Your pixs mostly show him in off-the-ball situations... He had to mark and help Onazi choke the Algerians!!! Tu comprends??

I wonder how he got his assist sef... Think about it. smiley
You seem to hinge your point on the assist he made. Probably trying to connect it with him playing a box to box Cmf role.
In the 4-2_3-1 Formation we played Etebo and Onazi where the anchor...
If we played a 4-1-4-1 formation, Etebo would have always been ahead of Onazi.

Let me give you a hint, don't look at the formation of a team you're studying when they are on the ball. You read formation when the team is without the ball.
Onazi just like Etebo would have made that pass to Mikel.
Didnt you see the picture I posted?

Gundogan? Always seen beyond defensive third? Sometimes, he drops deep to the defenders and exchange passes with them.
I hate arguing without facts that's why I normally use stats. This time I will use still pictures to educate you guys a bit.
You can see Onazi and Etebo's position marked with a blue circle. You can see from the four different pictures, they were in a straight line with each other.
If you still insist Etebo was a box to box or Cmf then that certifies you simply can't read a formation properly and we forget the argument.

The same Etebo we saw fouled on the left wing? I guess he was a left winger. Why do you think there is praise for his work rate? He was not a DMF. Are you saying when Fernandinho and Gundogan play in midfield, Gundogan is a defensive midfielder?

It is a double pivot. One makes box-to-box runs, the other shields the defence. Etebo was the earlier.
How many times did you see Etebo in the defensive 3rd of the Algerians?
Guondogan is always seen beyond the defensive 3rd of the opposition like in the Barca game.
I wonder why you brought his name up.

Etebo played ahead of Onazi. He was a CMF. In the double pivot, most times one is a box-to-box. Etebo was not a defensive midfielder in that game.
The same Etebo I saw double team on Brahimi with Omeruo?
The same Etebo I saw make intersections in our defence 3rd time and time again?
It's like your eyes were only fixed on the ball. You didn't watch much of players positioning off the ball.

Etebo in the first half made a timely interseption which Drew the applause of the crowd at 2:0.
His starting point was never as a Cmf

Mickael2:
Because Etebo was more of a CMF in that match or you didn't notice that? Onazi was the standing DMF and Etebo was more of a CMF. Meanwhile, no matter how many DMFs you have, their primary work is to man the middle, if the play happened close to the throw-in then I would understand the covering part but this is inside the box, a DMF should be standing infront of the two CBs in that position, the LB and LCB had that covered, he went to mark a player who already had 2 players on him, isn't that poor decision making.
Etebo was not the Cmf. The super eagles played 4_2_3_1 formation
Onazi and Etebo where in the double pivot. Mikel played ahead of them while Iwobi and Moses held up the flanks.
I wonder where you got the idea that Etebo played as a Cmf ot box to box.

Mickael2:
what was Onazi doing in that second goal? Echejile was down because they blocked the first shot, what was Onazi doing at the left side of defence?! You have a LB and a LCB and both were charging the ball, for God's sake maintain your own position closer to the edge of the box
Funny enough, Onazi sat in front of the defence on the left side, while Etebo sat on the right part in the dual pivot role. As a good analyst I was expecting you to ask where Etebo was in these action moments.

Clearly from the still pictures, Onazi was about covering for Elderson to block the Mahrez shot.
Why aren't you asking where Etebo was? Am curious

Mickael2:
I have rewatched the match and I still don't get your point. The Algerians had 3 clear cut chances arising from Onazi's inabilities. The first one was because he couldn't even keep up with Brahimi who wipped in a cross that was put over. The second one, Mahrez had all the time to shoot inside our box and our 'DMF' wasn't closing him down at all. We were not troubled because of Etebo's engine, Onazi was average or even below that. If you gave Akpeyi a 7 rating for one mistake which was actually caused by Onazi's mistake, then Onazi should get a 6 maximum
Let's run a bit of tactical analysis on the two actions you pointed out shall we...

The first picture shows Onazi engaging Brahimi while Omeruo who should be closer to action was a few paces behind Onazi and Brahimi. Brahimi time and time again as we have seen over the years will out pace most defenders and DMs in a foot race.

The second picture shows Onazi very close to action again. Elderson should have been the guy charging on Mahrez but he was down, Onazi tried to cover for him, in doing so, Mikel would have marked Benteleb.
Lucky enough Mahrez didn't pass the ball to Brahimi who was in hectares of space offered him with Iwobi's loose marking.

Funny enough, the much heralded Etebo was not in the picture in the two actions analysed.

I have really respected you because of your great profundity and expertise in football analyses, and to be honest, I even started to ditch my opinion that Iheanacho was better playing behind a top striker because of your erstwhile analyses that depicted contrary. But his performance against the Algerians was glaring, and I have made a resolute verdict that he is better playing behind a top striker. He is a fabulous poacher when he is behind, he positions perfectly for passes to come inside the box and delivers lethal strikes. Those coruscating goals he scored in UAE were scored as an attacking midfielder.

Speaking on team praises and personal accolades, although a player's interest ought to be subordinated to the team's interest. but I will also say that both goes together. The team's goal in that encounter was to win the match, and if it took the brilliant and terrific performance of Iheanacho for them to achieve such goal then what stops them from welcoming it??

Lets say that Moses picked up an injury prior to the match and hence, he was omitted from the squad, then who would have been the marksman against Algeria with Iheanacho's attempts curtailed as the top striker by the Algerians? Iwobi cannot be relied upon now as a consistent goalscorer.

Iheanacho is versatile as an attacking player no doubt, but if you want to get the best of him, then play him behind a top striker.
Am quite shocked it took the performance against Algeria for you guys to understand what some of us have been saying for over a year now.
Better late than never anyway.

I disagree with the idea that people hate Onazi. He had a poor second half and that was why people made honest complain. Unfortunately, most did not consider the fact that he played with a knock most of the second half.

After Onazi went down, his mobility reduced. That did not stop the Algerians from fouling him repeatedly.

So they made honest view of his performance but did not consider the factors. I doubt that is hatred.
I believe it is hatred. If Mikel or any other player took one for the team like Onazi did and got injured as a result, everybody would have given him Kudos.
Onazi hardly got a mention for his heroics rather he was thrown under the bus for not marking 3 Algerians on the rampage prior to the goal.

I gave Onazi top marks for putting his career on the line by taking that bang to deny the Algerians. He got injured as a result of that gash but still soldiered on.
It was clear his level dropped notch after that injury.
It wasn't like he was average prior to that. You may not notice but he was partly the reason why Algeria didn't trouble our defence and goalkeeper in the first half.
Algeria couldn't link the ball to Slimani from the midfield because onazi extinguished and intercepted their moves once they got close to our final third.

Guys, we have to discuss o. Kelechi is not effective as a lone striker as seen in City and Eagles yet if he has to play as a SS, one of the guys in the midfield today would have to go (Etebo, Mikel, Onazi/Ndidi). How practicable is this?

Iheanacho's best position is not as a top striker. I think I've argued this out on this thread for several months now.
Playing him a striker will neutralise his impact. He is like Greizmann /Kaka. I think I've been very clear on this.
Sports › Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2027, 2028 And 2030 World Cup by goldfish80(m): 9:19pm On Nov 12, 2016
Akpeyi = He was solid enough between the poles. Commanded and organised the defence thus neutralising the Algerian threat from set pieces. The goal he conceeded was honestly a good shot straight to the roof.  I've seen cech, Courtouis, Buffoon conceed such goals. Simply put, the ball was well struck by Bentaleb, partly because he had all the time to pick his spot. 7/10

Omeruo = was tidy in possession and strong to tackle. He matched Brahimi pace for pace. Most times he out paced Brahimi. Although am not surprised by this because durring the course the season he has been the most improved Nigerian defender. I have to say this, Brahimi over the past few seasons have proved a handful for world class defenders in the Champions league. Big probs to Omeruo for neutralising him. 8,5/10

Uwa Echiejile = (As an apostle of experience)  Ive always said Echiejile is a big game player. The most experienced defender and by a country mile the defender with the most caps for the eagles. This guy knows what it's all about to compete at the highest level. He masterfully neutralized Mahrez. Mahrez could still be in his pocket as  I type this. Uwa have yet again proved that experience is a huge factor that can't be thrown away. Kudos 10/10

BALOGUN/EKONG = Theses guys were rock solid all night. They double teamed on Slimani and gave the Algerian no sniff at all. Their proficiency reduced the Algerians to shoot from outside the box. They certainly dominated and owned every aerial battles they went in for. It was a promising performance by the pair. 9.5/10

Onazi = This guy was a soldier as usual today. He pressed and stifled the Algerians in midfield. This young man bleed for the shirt, even put his career on the line when he made that last ditch effort to deny the Algerians. He got injured and yet soldered on. Nigerians have been critical of the eagles in the past  for lacking the zeal and effort to compete, here we are with a guy who is ready to die on the pitch to make sure we win, instead of giving him the praise he deserves, we rather throw him under the bus.

The goal we conceeded came as a result of Onazi going after Brahimi who cut back the ball to Bentaleb, unfortunately Etebo was out of position and the CBs were occupied with Slimani so they didn't press up to pressure Bentaleb. 8,5/10

Etebo =  What a footballer we have on our hands. This guy ran the show in midfield. His pace and power proved too much for the Algerians at times. He put in a shift today and crowned it all by chalking  an assist for the second goal. For those critical of Npfl players(cc Icon4s) , I hope you watched Etebo who was a player  for Warri Wolves just last year. Another dynamite we have in the Npfl last season was Nwobodo (watch out for him)

8.5/10

Mikel Obi = It was a solid day in the office for the captian. His lack of game time showed abit in the first half but he picked it up in the second. He Oozed class and ran the Algerians down. He gassed out at the 70-75minute mark and was duely substituted. 8/10

Alex Iwobi = The young Arsenal man had a tough day today. He struggled in the first period because the Algerians had 2men on him all game. They certainly were scared of his abilities. He showed class when he was with the ball. And there I say he has the best first touch of any football player in the world at the moment. And that nasty piece of skill to put the Algerian guy on the poster will make a good Internet meme for awhile..  Oh dear!  8/10

Victor Moses =  incredible performance. This guy was like a tank today. Bejesus! He showed the Algerians clean pair of heels time after  time. They simply didn't know how to deal with him. Detailing 2 players to mark out Iwobi left Moses to run amork. Simply his best performance yet for the super Eagles. He should share Man of the match award with Uwa Echiejile. 20/10

Iheanacho = I don't want to say I told you so, but I can't help it. Ihenacho not a proper striker. His best position is playing off a striker. Playing him as the top striker neutralized his influence. He had no shot on target today and certainly was dominated by the Algerians aerially. However, I can see the sense in playing him up front today certainly because we needed the insurance of Etebo in midfield, hence Rohr had to do without Brown/Odion. 5/10

Gernot Rohr = The master tactician proved once more his tactical acumen. What a find by the Nff. His substitutions were understand and spot on! The timing of Musa's introduction was right on the money.

Such a shame Mr Rohr wasn't the chosen one immediately Keshi was sacked. He was the real MVP today. 10/10

Not like I know alot about Algerian football, but for Brahimi, Mahrez, Slimani the rest from midfield to attack are bang average players.
In defence, Ghulam the left back is the only top talent in the defence. Although he is prone to being erratic and yellow carded. Moses should be instructed to attack him with pace, within the first 20mins he will be yellow carded. This I belive will slow him down.

I don't think there is anything to fear about these Algerians, infact only Mahrez, Brahimi and Ghulam can make our starting 11....
We should be spanking these guys 4:1 or 3:1 in all honesty. https://www.nairaland.com/3018619/new-super-eagles-thread-russia/232#50681281

REVEALED: How Super Eagles Lined Up In

The Super Eagles of Nigeria held their first tactical session at the Nest of Champions ahead of their World Cup 2018 qualifiers against Algeria.

Coach Gernot Rohr held the session behind close doors but Owngoalnigeria.com eagle eyed
correspondent watched the training from a
section of the stadium unnoticed.

Rohr tried the players in two different formations during the session, starting with a 3-4-3 formation before switching formations again during the session.

Here is how the probables were lined up against
the possibles in a 3-4-3 formation as witnessed by our correspondent.

Daniel Akpeyi (GK)

William Troost Ekong ( DF)

Leon Balogun (DF)

Kenneth Omeruo (DF)

Victor Moses (RWB)

Ahmed Musa ( LWB)

Mikel Obi ( MF)

Eddy Onazi (MF)

Oghenekaro Etebo (FW)

Alex Iwobi (FW)

Kelechi Iheanacho (FW)

Keys:

GK: Goalkepper

DF: Defender

RWB: Right Wing Back

LWB: Left Wing Back

MF: Midfielder

Unbelievable.. Gernot Rohr is following this thread for real.
I posted exactly this formation before the Zambian game. The only difference was I had Musa Muhammed ahead of Moses because Moses was absent last time out.
This formation could be far fetched. Abit alien to our style but I think a 3-5-2 formation could suit our team.
Something like this..
. . . . . . . . Ikeme. . . . . . .
... Omeruo. . . Leon. . . . Troost

.M.mohamed. . . . Onazi. . . Mikel
. . . . . . . . . . . . .iwobi. . . . . . . . . . . . Musa
. . . . . . . . Iheanacho. . . Ighalo

In this formation, Musa Muhammed would be licensed to push high up the field, just like a winger, when in possession, while the over load in midfield and Omeruo covers for him.
At the last AYC, he almost played like a free winger and got about 5goals. Won the player of the tournament I believe. Lichestiner plays this role for juventus.

In attack, Musa should be cutting in from the left. We all know what he did at the last world cup playing that position. Against South Africa in a friendly, he played from this angle and got a goal. He could be more prolific than moses playing there.

Iheanacho will support Odion and drop to the middle to help control the game, while Iwobi plays a free role which is his most natural position although he was trained at arsenal to play any role in attack even as a striker.

The Zambians will struggle to get out of their own half if we play a prototype like this. As they will be strangled to submission right there in Ndola.

Rohr calls Conte out over Mikel

https://www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Mikel-And-Rohr-Say-Nigeria-Super-Eagles-Will-Beat-Algeria-1.jpg

Technical Adviser of Nigeria’s national team,
Gernot Rohr has revealed the reason behind John
Mikel Obi's current travails at English Premier
League club, Chelsea.

Mikel, the current Super Eagles captain, has yet
to make a substitute appearance for Chelsea in all
competitions this season despite featuring
fleetingly for the Stamford Bridge club in pre-
season.

Rohr has now explained that Mikel has failed to
play competitively for Chelsea so far this season
because the club’s manager, Antonio Conte “is
punishing him” for representing Nigeria at the
2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Mikel was Nigeria’s captain at the 2016 Olympics,
impressing as the “Dream Team” won the
country’s only medal – a Bronze - at the Games.

“I spoke about this with Mikel and the club’s
technical director (Michael Emenalo). Mikel is
training very well and he plays games in training
with the big players at Chelsea.

“There is a reason why Mikel is not playing for
Chelsea right now and that reason is because he
played for Nigeria at the (2016) Olympics.

“He was punished for that (by Conte)

“I cannot punish a player who loves his country
and shows that he loves the Green jersey,” Rohr
said at a press conference on Thursday ahead of
Nigeria’s 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifier in Uyo on
Saturday.

Rohr then hinted that the Chelsea man is certain
to start on Saturday against the Fennec Foxes at
the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

The trainer however stated that he is not certain
if Mikel will play the entire game or be substituted
at some point against the Algerians.

“He (Mikel) is here with us and he is fit and I hope
he can play for 90 minutes against Algeria but if it
is not possible, we shall see.

“He is a big player so if he tells me on Saturday
he can play for 90 minutes, great but if he says
he cannot, then I will also listen to him.

“If he is substituted, we have other players who
can come in for us so it is not really a problem for
us.

“I have seen Mikel in the training sessions and he
is okay and fit.

“He played a lot of games at the beginning of the
season at the Olympics and has also played two
games with us (Super Eagles) against Zambia
and Tanzania.

“I have big confidence in him and if he says ‘it is
okay’, then it is okay but when he says ‘it is not
okay’ then it is not and I will listen to him,” Rohr
explained.

Chelsea football club have once again demonstrated they are a club without class.
Initially, I couldn't bring myself to belive they really are punishing Mikel for playing at the Olympics.
Even when they issued a statement wishing him all the best in Rio.

Mikel on his part is too meek and timid for my liking. If it were someone like Samuel Eto, he would have dragged the club to the court of arbitration.
Even if he had a year to run in his contract, the club would have been made to pay through their nose adding to the already battered image of the club with the Eva case.
I believe Mikel will have the support or FIFA, if he does then FIFA might as well push for the seclusion football from the Olympics. After all, it doesn't serve any concrete purpose since it has been watered down and an U23 tournament

huh huh
The statistical connection is that today being 9/11 Donald Trump won the elections.
I don't know what the numbers are saying with the date and a Donald Trump presidency.
Ask Hilary to run again in 2020, the stats say she will be 74yrs old. Which is right about the age Buhari won...
You see, stats is not such a bad thing. grin

It's stale... You made it sound like you'll be surprising me with the news not knowing I got it covered elsewhere... wink News is about 3hours old...

...............
Garbadiola and "corrupt allegations"...... Ehmm... They don't add up.

They certainly don't. The Garbadiola tag obviously has to do with his style of play and football philosophy.

And you?? A barca what?? A fan of Barca?? Looolllll... Sir Joseph1013 I know, Sir BascoVanVeli I know.... But you?? And you don't like Tiki taka?? Hahahahahaha.... I am definitely missing something... grin
You don't belive am Barca fan because I don't shout Barcelona up and down like TheGoodJoe shouts Man city?

If you've ever read my posts, you will notice I always make reference to Enugu Rangers, Arsenal, Dortmond and Barcelona. That should tell you something.

If I wanted to break the news about the team loosing 8:1, I would have posted the entire article.
And you're still hanging on to Garbadiola? Gosh! You guys can't take a joke?
Nawao

It wasn't last night mister... It was this morning.

And I already dropped that news in the youths/cadets talents thread... grin so it's stale.... Tu comprends?

Still terming him Garbadiola huh?? Shows your obvious disdain for tiki taka.... No wonder you dragged the argument for so long. *smh*
like you said yourself, the game was played today, so it's not stale.
Am a Barca fan, how can I not like total football?
I called him Garbadiola because that's what his fans call him even in the face of corrupt allegations against him.

Your point was that you made a funny statement about right-back and aerial balls. You are funny abeg you. You do not even remember how Kalaba got his Yellow card. It was in the eighteen yard box and it was Ndidi marking. So please, I have explained how Ndidi got to the line of fire. You can read stats and argue.

Leave me please. I am yet to recover from Hillary Clinton's loss.
cry cry
I thought our argument was about Ndidi winning aerial balls durring the game?
I can't be stupid not to know that Ndidi spent a lot of time in our own half durring the game.
When the Zambians were in the ascendancy, he dropped even deeper to curtail their furrays.
Truth was that Rohr knew Ndidi was strong aerially by knowing his stats and he proved that in training, so he got the nod to start.

Sorry about Hillary's loss. 2020 elections is just around the corner, never say never grin

Not when the away team scores a goal to make it 1 nil.

And certainly not when, u get beaten 7-1 at home.
Make it 8-1 like Manu Garbadiola's Eaglets were trounced last night... grin
@odenigboaroli and @safarigirl sorry if I've been a headache.
It was totally unintentional.

Thegoodjoe and goldfish80, mbok you people should take this your 4 days old argument to the other room.

Haba! Can't you just agree to disagree and drop the matter? You mustn't come out on top at all times. Just leave this decision to the coach
LOL... We aren't quarrelling. Its just normal football banter which should be encouraged in a football thread.
That's why the stadium is always noisy. cool

What are you talking? I am talking of his performance against Zambia, you are talking Genk. Do not make me laugh.
Why would you think a right back dominated aerial battles against an opposition who played with a big striker? I can't remember Ndidi marking Colins Mbesuma.
Am just curious

Who told you that aerial balls only have to do with set pieces? Do you know when balls are cleared from the back, it goes up? Do you know crosses go up? To use set pieces as the only aerial ball highlights why I say you only read data and hardly understand what you watch.

Ndidi drifted to the center during the game to help. I would not spend my time explaining tactics to you. I give a hint. When Echiejile overlapped, sometimes Omeruo moves to the left to cover the gap. In such position, Ndidi adjusted to give the central defence solidity.

This is not reading stats and arguing like you understand what you are talking. You do not know what you see. Shown many times in your argument.

You did not see Ndidi in the central defence when the Zambian player dived. Was that at the right-back position? Sorry. You do not understand what your watching. Just reading stats.
Now you're explaining tactics and team movement.
Who doesn't know when one full back attacks the other stays back to give support to the defence incase of a fast break.

Funny enough, in your review after the game you were all over the place slatting Elderson for not offering much in the attack. If he didn't bomb forward according to you, how come Ndidi always stayed back to offer support as a third man?

My point was that Ndidi didn't have to Dominate aerial battles because he was not in the line of fire.if he had played as a DM or a CB he would have battled with the Zambian striker Mbesuma who Omeruo tracked all game.
Except you're saying Rainford Kalaba was the Zambian target man.
You lie again.. Lol

Why do you feel we will not play a possessive passing style because, someone already highlighted Balogun's statement of the playing style?

With the next few games we will understand Rohr's but most modern teams, including the Germans play with brilliant passing midfielders.

If Rohr moves towards a solid passing team, we will need a solid passing midfielder.

Whether you like it or not or feel it is not the African way. At the end, we are thinking of playing against top teams. So the Bad pitch excuse is off the mark.
And you think ticki taka will win the World Cup for us?
The previous world cup finalists Argentina and Germany did they play ticki taka?
The previous Copa America finalists Chile and Argentina, did they play ticki taka?
The last Euro finalists France and Portugal, did they play ticki taka?
Whats this obsession about ticki taka like it's the only style that wins games and championships.
