tglobal: Since Ronaldo at 19 scored 47 goals in 49 games for Barcelona in 1996/1997, and was also the world's best player in the season you mentioned above, I am tempted to believe that to be honest
The Spanish league was not that tough either. The toughest league in Europe at the time was Seria A and Ronaldo scored just 49 times in 5years at Inter Milan.
Nigga is about as African as the likes of Zidane, Benzema, Kante and Pogba.....you people need to leave these people for the Europe they have adopted. Stop trying to do gum body, it's not sexy
So these guys you listed aren't Africans again because they choose to work and live in Europe?
tglobal: Comparing champions league appearances in 2 different eras is unfair. The reason Ronaldo didn't score in the in the champions league in his first 4 seasons in Europe, despite playing for Barcelona and Inter Milan and winning the FIFA World player of year twice was because his teams never appeared in the competition. Champions league was a tournament for just the league champions p. With the dominance of PSG in Ligue 1, Monaco and Mbappe would have missed out of the champions league.
By the way, the fact that Ajax couldn't beat PSV in both legs of their 1995/1996 league fixtures shoud let you know the quality of the dutch league then. Ronaldo was even the top goalscorer at 18 yrs.
The dutch league was no more a one team league than Ligue 1 is now, with PSG's dominance. Nigeria at some point had a player in almost all the teams in that league due to Westerhof connection, i suppose (Iroha, Rufai, Babangida, Finidi, Obiku, Kanu etc)
Let's not kid our selves. The Dutch league then was all about Ajax, Ajax and Ajax. Its not a coincidence they won the league 5X back to back between 1993-1998. They steam rolled teams on their way to the title, at some point they went 52 matches unbeaten in the league. PSV had a decent team but they had nothing on Ajax. The less said about the rest of the league the better. You think Ronaldo at 18 would have scored 42 goals in 46 games in a stronger league like Seria A of 1995/96?
Ronaldo was the best in his generation (arguably), Mbappe has the chops to be the best in his own generation. Where's the blasphemy there? Continue holding on to the past my friend. Your eyes go clear when Monaco grabs the champions league and League 1. Oh yes I said it. Please call me out if it doesn't come to pass.
TheGoodJoe: So the erroneous theory does not work. You believe Mbappe is currently better than an 18 years R9. Watching both players, the Gulf in class is clear to see. How you can not see it beats my imagination.
It does actually, it's Henry he's being compared to but you brought up Ronaldo and am ready to go with the flow. In Europe currently as I type this, he is the best teen out of the lot. I have not committed treason by comparing him to anybody.
maidaboi: we are talking about french league here with the same one team league,so your are telling us that mbappe was better than ronaldo at 18? You are agueing blindly bros take it eazy
Mbappe deserves praise and respect. He has already broken a few long standing records. By the way, he is more likened to Henry than Ronaldo due to their similar playing style and career path. I think TheGoodJoe erroneously brought up the comparison with Ronaldo. However, I will still ride with the Ronaldo comparison. He's that talented.
tbaba1234: Got to the final twice in a row. won once and lost the other.
Bayern is not in a poor league, Neither is Juventus. They might be better than their rivals but their rivals also play at a high standard.
Once in the final could be as a result of luck but twice in the final, back to back shows a truly world-class team. You do not become a world class team playing part-timers every week.
Let's get to the chase. Apart from Ajax which other team in the Dutch league can boast of being world class?
Abeg leave matter, there's no competition in Germany. Let's not kid ourselves. Bayern can afford to buy up the best players from each of the 18 teams in the Bundesliga. The German league is structured that Bayern have the first refusal on every German player in the Bundesliga. Please let's not go there.
What competition in Seria A? A league where Juventus can afford to win the championship even if they were handicapped - 15 points before the league kicks off.
tbaba1234: Ajax won the champions league and got the final, a year later in that same period. 1994-1996.. The dutch league produced world class super-stars in that period. Overmars, Edgar davids, Dennis bergkamp, Seedorf, Frank/Ronald De boer, Patrick Kluivert, etc.... The golden age of dutch football. PSV led by Ronaldo won the league ahead a strong Ajax side.
Look at the names in that period to have a valid comparison.
Ronaldo did not win the league at PSV. What He won was the equivalent of the FA cup. They call it the KNVB cup not the Dutch league please.
tbaba1234: Yet Ajax went to the Champions league final twice in a row.. If the level of competition was so poor.. Do you think that is possible? Has Celtic made the champions league final, back to back?
I Dont know about Ajax winning the champions league twice in a row. However, down the years we have seen teams from leagues with one dominant side ride the champions league. We can say that about Bayern Munich, Seria A these days with Juventus. Ajax did well in the champions league, not because of the strength of their league, but because they benefited from a talent boom from their Academy and they recruited very wisely from around Europe and Africa, like Lithmanen, Kanu, Finidi. If the gods favour Basel and Celtic like Ajax, they will walk the champions league irrespective of their opposition in the league.
TheGoodJoe: I have seen too many brilliant young talents to get excited with what I am seeing in Mbappe. As I said, discipline and Hardwork is what he needs because more prolific talents than him did not reach the level of Henry and Ronaldo De Lima.
You're preaching to the choir. I've seen a lot of talented players down the years who didn't reach their full potential. What adds to my excitement in Mbappe's case is that he's African. I wouldn't mention his name on this thread if he was white.
tbaba1234: Ajax won the champions league and got the final, a year later in that same period. 1994-1996.. The dutch league produced world class super-stars in that period. The Dutch league was a one horse race at the time. Just like what you have in Scotland and Switzerland today. Apart from Ajax and maybe PSV, the rest of the league were part timers.
TheGoodJoe: I said making team. Not starting or playing. For a seventeen years old player to make the Brazilian World Cup team was nothing short of amazing. We are talking Brazil.
Ronaldo De Lima was special. I would be crazy to deny his abilities. As a matter for fact he is one of my favourite strikers of all time. Connecting Mbappe to legends like Ronaldo and the rest is easy because he certainly have the talent in folds. Am particularly excited about his prospects because he's African.
By the way, Mbappe is likened to Henry than Ronaldo because they both started out as Wing forwards. While Ronaldo is a typical no 9.
TheGoodJoe: If you had an idea of how good the 1994 Brazilian team was and the competition to get a place for the World Cup squad. Then you can imagine the ability of a 17 years Ronaldo making that team.
During the World Cup triumph celebration, a commentator said, that Ronaldo will soon become the best player in the World and two years later, he was undoubtedly the best player in the World in an era of great players.
How many minuets did Ronaldo play at the USA world cup? He was a bit part player if anything.
tbaba1234: Ronaldo scored 42 goals in 46 games at PSV.. Led them to the league and cup as a teenager.
Salomon Kalou, Dirk Kuyt, Mateja Kezman, Ryan Babel scored tonnes of goals in the Dutch league but we know their level. Mbape on the other hand is bossing it in the Champions league against the very best in world. I don't think Ronaldo scored more goals than MBA in the champions league.
TheGoodJoe: I think it is the other way around. My point from day one of this Mbappe talk has not changed. I made it simple, he is not as good as a young Ronaldo de Lima. If you agree, what is the problem.
As for multiple Ballon d'Or, it will take more than talent. He will need to have discipline and Hardwork. He is a promising potential and I wish him the best.
Ronaldo at 18 scored how many hatricks? How many champions league goals did he score at 18? Mbappe at 18 is gradually leading Monaco to win the league at the expense of favourites PSG. What exactly makes Ronaldo so special at 18 that Mbappe have not shown X2?
TheGoodJoe: Mbappe is good for a promising talent. An eighteen year old with the capability of doing great things. However, he is not yet a phenomenon or merit the Ronaldo hype I used to read. For an eighteen year old, applaud for fight, taking his chance he got and determination.
You're stressing yourself unnecessarily. Nobody said he is the best player in the world. Nobody said he's as good as Ronaldo De Lima. We are just excited to watch a potential serious world class player and probably a multi balon d'or winner unfold right before our eyes. Confidently I can say he can get to the threshold of winning these accolades because he is proving to be better than some of those compared to him at the same age.
He was not even in the game for the first goal... Where did you see Chidera on the field for the first goal??
There is no mistake. He is number 70 and ran up front for their second goal but there is no way, he played support striker.
I am watching it right now with Chidera in the middle. The other black guy upfront is number 90..
What stream did you watch? Obviously it couldn't have been the one you posted. Chidera Eze started that game. He was on the pitch when they scored the first goal on the 3rd minute. Infact, he ran up to the goal scorer to celebrate with him.
Dedebanky85: In fact I watch d game and was like no be Chidera be number 70? The darker Dude that was stocky was the DM. Number 70 was a support attacker and that was Chidera...
tbaba1234: No way, he will play for Cameroon. The French will pull out all stops to make sure, he plays for them.
I felt the Camerounians will leverage on their Confederations cup qualification to lure him. Anyway, it's obvious France will pull all stunts to cap him. They haven't gotten over the loss of Aubameyang to Gabon.
TheGoodJoe: If Iheanacho played the way Mbappe played yesterday, I will praise his performance and just as I applauded Mbappe during his substitution, I would applaud Nacho too. However, I said he has the potential of becoming great. Same as I believe with Iheanacho.
Where you are terribly missing my point is comparing Mbappe to having the quality of a young Ronaldo de Lima. It is terribly untrue. Mbappe has potentials but vanished in that match. Not as good as you guys make him out to be.
I don't get it. You think Mbappe is not all that good but you gave him a standing ovation when he was subbed off? Come on, you have to be consistent. Am struggling to reconcile those 2 sentences.
terzurum5: AF South Africa 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers - Africa South Africa Breaking News: Krol takes charge of Bafana Bafana
by Phumzile Ngcatshe
According to local media reports, the South African Football Association has hired former Orlando Pirates coach Ruud Krol to lead Bafana Bafana.
The move follows months of speculation regarding the vacant coaching job as the association was searching for Shakes Mashaba's replacement.
Mashaba was axed in December last year after he was found guilty of gross misconduct following his utterances towards SAFA bosses after the 2-1 win over Senegal in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
Names such as Stuart Baxter, Gavin Hunt, Hugo Broos, Herve Renard and Carlos Queiroz have been mentioned as possible candidates to lead the side.
However, according to The Mail & Guardian, SAFA have settled for the Dutch mentor as he is seen as someone with extensive knowledge of the African game, both at club and national level.
It is reported that the ex-Oranje skipper has agreed terms and conditions with SAFA to take charge of Bafana after the organisation had initially flirted with Queiroz.
After failing to secure their preferred candidate and with Bafana due to line-up against Guinea Bissau and Angola in friendly matches in the next seven days, SAFA opted for the ex-Zamalek and CS Sfaxien manager.
“He has coached in his native Holland. But he has also worked mainly in Africa since 1994 when he took charge of the Egyptian U-23’s and later the senior team and what appears to have given him an added advantage is that he is available to start working without delay,” said a source to the Mail & Guardian.
“SAFA stated openly when they advertised the post that the criteria required for a successful Bafana Bafana coach would be an intimate and extensive knowledge of the African game.
“The criteria as elucidated by SAFA goes on to point out that the successful candidate must have an excellent understanding of the South African playing philosophy, or playing style, as some people like to describe our approach to the game.
“In fact, it goes on to explain that he must have international coaching experience with a good track record allied to a vision and passion for football development and good player management to complete SAFA’s Vision 2022.”
South Africa letting Shakes Mashaaba leave was an error. He has been the best Bafana Bafana manager since 1998. They might have jeopardised their world cup chances with this appointment.
You can see Chidera Ezeh's Progress.. He is now a defensive Midfielder apparently
No. He played as a support striker not as a DM. The black guy on Jersey number 91 was the DM not Chidera. Chidera wore no70 Jersey, he was the most advanced player in the lead up to their first goal ... Its a case of mistaken identity on your part, probably you had them mixed up because of their identical skin colour.
TheGoodJoe: Pure class bomb. Apart from the goal he scored which was not spectacular and the Offside chance he missed, he was virtually invisible in a dominant Monaco side. He has potential but pure class? I disagree.
You're being hypocritical. If Iheanacho had the kind of game Mbappe had over the 2 legs, you would have turned the thread upside down with adulations on how magical Guardiola has been on Iheanacho on the training ground.
komekn: Watching city getting out foxed and out played by Monaco.
When I talked about Mbappe being the hottest thing right now in football some doubted. This kid is only 18 and is pure quality and class.
I sincerely hope Kylian Lottini gets to commit to Cameroun. If he does, I will definitely pack my bags and suitcases on August the 12th to watch him play live in Uyo. If you love the game, you just have to love the boy.
The recent publicity and outrage by the public on military assault, this lady could make a few hundred million if she pressed charges. This military gangsterism must stop. We are no longer in 1995
