Senate screens CBN Governor and deputy nominees
|
MY CONTRIBUTION TO YESTERDAY'S SCREENING OF CBN GOVERNOR AND DEPUTY NOMINEES AS THE SENATE RESUMES PLENARY My Dear Constituents, The Senate resumed plenary yesterday after a short vacation and during the sitting, I joined my distinguished colleagues to screen Dr Olayemi Cardoso who was nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, to serve as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and Mrs. Emem Nnana Usoro, Mr. Muhammad Sani Abdullahi Dattijo, Mr. Philip Ikeazor, and Dr. Bala M. Bello who were also nominated by the President to serve as Deputy Governors of the Apex Bank. During the exercise, I reiterated the importance of ensuring that the nominees possess the necessary qualifications, experience, and integrity to effectively carry out their roles in the Central Bank of Nigeria. As a member of the Senate, it is our duty to thoroughly scrutinize and evaluate the nominees to ensure that they are fit for the positions they have been nominated for. I also emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in the selection process. It is crucial that the nominees undergo a rigorous screening process to ensure that they are free from any conflicts of interest. The Central Bank of Nigeria plays a critical role in the country's economy, and it is essential that those appointed to lead it are individuals of high moral character and competence. Furthermore, I reiterated the need for the Apex Bank to put in measures that will finance resuscitation of existing Refineries and building of Modular Refineries to support fuel subsidy removal and called on the nominees to streamline measures that will curb sabotage of our financial economy and strengthen the Naira. I also stressed the importance of maintaining the independence of the Central Bank. The Central Bank should be free from political interference and be able to make decisions based on economic considerations and the best interests of the country. It is crucial that the nominees understand and respect the importance of this independence and are committed to upholding it. Overall, the screening exercise was a necessary step in ensuring that the nominees for the positions in the Central Bank of Nigeria are qualified and capable of effectively carrying out their responsibilities. I am confident that the Presidency will make informed decisions based on the outcome of the screening process, and that the individuals selected will contribute to the growth and stability of Nigeria's economy. During the event, I had the opportunity to address the attendees and share my experiences as a member of the Nnewi community and as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It was a joyous occasion filled with cultural performances and delicious Nigerian cuisine. I also spoke about the importance of preserving our cultural heritage and passing it on to future generations, and emphasized the need to sustain the existing unity and collaboration within our community, both in the UK and back home in Nnewi, Nigeria. I also highlighted the achievements and contributions of Nnewi people in various fields, such as business, academia, and the arts. It was inspiring to see the pride and enthusiasm of the attendees as we celebrated our shared identity and accomplishments. The event provided a platform for further networking and connecting with fellow Nnewi community members. I had the opportunity to meet and engage with individuals who shared similar backgrounds and experiences. From manufacturing to agriculture, the community has shown resilience and determination in the face of challenges. It has proven time and again that it can compete on a global scale. As a Senator, I have had the privilege of representing the interests of ndị Nnewi and working towards the community’s development. I have witnessed first-hand the struggles and aspirations of our people. 11/09 FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS

11/09 FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS We shall never forget the sad event that occurred at Nkwọ Enugwu-Ukwu on Sunday September 11, 2022. On that day, I was returning from Nnewi Diocesan Synod and as if it was a movie, bullets started raining from all angles and sadly, two of my Aides; Ikechukwu Odum and Goodnews Matthias as well as two of the security personnel attached to me; Inspector David Jimoh and Sergeant Bello Lawan paid the ultimate price. It was a horrifying experience that will forever be etched in our memories. The peaceful atmosphere suddenly turned into chaos and despair. The loss of lives, including my dedicated aides and security personnel, is a tragedy that words cannot fully express. Odum Ikechukwu and Goodnews Matthias were not just my aides; they were loyal and committed individuals who served with utmost dedication. Their untimely demise is a great loss not only to me but also to their families, friends, and the community they belonged to. Their selflessness and unwavering support will always be remembered. The security personnel who lost their lives while protecting us also deserve our utmost respect and gratitude. They put their lives on the line to ensure our safety, and their sacrifice will never be forgotten. Their families have been left devastated, and our thoughts and prayers go out to them during this difficult time. This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the unpredictable nature of the world we live in. It is a reminder that violence can strike at any moment, even in the most unexpected places. We must remain vigilant and united in our efforts to promote peace and security in our communities. As we mourn the loss of our dear ones, let us also remember to cherish the memories we shared with them. Let us honour their lives by continuing the work they started and striving for a better and safer society. May the souls of Ikechukwu Odum, Goodnews Matthias, Inspector David Jimoh, and Sergeant Bello Lawan rest in eternal peace, and may their families find solace and strength in this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. TRIBUNAL DISMISSES CHRIS AZUBOGU, OBINNA UZOH AND CHRIS UBA’S PETITIONS, UPHOLDS SENATOR IFEANYI UBAH’S VICTORY. To God be the glory, yesterday, 6th of September 2023, the Election Tribunal sitting in Awka, Anambra State upheld my victory in the February 25th National Assembly election and dismissed the consolidated petitions of both Chris Uba of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chris Azubogu of All Progressives Alliance (APGA) and Obinna Uzoh of Labor Party (LP). The Tribunal ruling which dismissed the petition filed by the trio on the basis of lack of merit is an attestation of both the perfect will of God and the irrefutable choice of the good people of Anambra South at the February 25 polls. It also reinforces the confidence our people have in the judiciary; this is a good development for the advancement of democracy in our nation Nigeria as the judiciary has shown it is indeed the last hope for all. CONGRATULATIONS to the Pride of Anambra South Politics. CONGRATULATIONS to the Lion of Igbo Nation CONGRATULATIONS to Ndi Anambra South Senatorial District. CONGRATULATIONS to Democracy.
