Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, better known as Igboho, has called for dialogue in the quest for self-determination, maintaining that it can be achieved without bloodshed.

Igboho said this in a statement issued on Thursday by his counsel, Yomi Alliyu, in which he sued for calm among his supporters.

"He continues to preach against war seeing what is happening in Ukraine and some parts of Igboland in Nigeria. He implored all, especially his kinsmen at home and in the diaspora, to embrace dialogue in their quest for self-determination without heating up the very fragile situation in Nigeria," the statement read.

"He believes that their ambition will be achieved without firing a bullet as he used to say at rallies."

His counsel further quoted him as saying that he would not relent in the push for self determination and thanked those who supported him while he was in prison.

The statement said: "Sunday Adeyemo a.k.a Igboho Oosa thanked all that are supporting him, especially his leaders, Baba Prof Akintoye and Baba Prof. Wale Adeniran and all Nigerians especially his people in llana. Oodua and Affiliates seeking self-determination.

"He appreciates Chief Dele Momodu being the only Yorubaman of note that came to visit him in Cotonou prison. He remains grateful to the President of the Republic of Benin, President Talon, for releasing him from prison with a view to uniting him with members of his immediate family, albeit only in Cotonou for the time being," it added.

The statement is the most recent from Igboho since he was freed by Benin Republic authorities on Monday.

Although details of his movement were sketchy in the wake of the development, reports suggest that he will stay in the Benin Republic. Before his arrest after attempting to move to Germany, Igboho was declared wanted by the Department of State Services (DSS) following a raid of his home in Oyo State in July.

Some of his aides are facing trial in Nigeria.

February 25th, 1989.

This was a quarter-final match between Nigerian and the Soviet Union at the 1989 FIFA Under 20 World Championship in Saudi Arabia. The Soviet Union was leading 4-0 in the 60th minute when Nigeria began its fight back. A pair of freekick goals by Christopher Ohenhen (61st and 75th minutes) and goals by Samuel Elijah (83rd minute) and captain Nduka Ugbade (84th minute) made the scores 4-4 at full time. Dimeji Lawal missed a chance to give Nigeria victory before full time. It went to penalties and Samuel Elijah defeated the Prophets of Baal to score the winning freekick for Nigeria.

Oleg Salenko, who scored one of the goals for the Soviet Union, scored a record 5 goals for Russia in the 6-1 victory over Cameroon in the 1994 FIFA World Cup.

Court workers under the aegis of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria have threatened to embark on indefinite industrial action following the failure of some states to pass the law granting financial autonomy to the judiciary.

They said only eight out of the 36 states have passed the law.

“If they refuse to do the needful, the plan is to go on strike when they need us the most and that is before the elections,” JUSUN’s Treasurer, Jimoh Musa, disclosed this in an interview with The PUNCH on Sunday.

The PUNCH reports that JUSUN had in April 2021 embarked on a nationwide strike that lasted over two months in its push for the implementation of financial autonomy for the judiciary in the 36 states.

The union’s National Executive Committee on June 9, 2021, suspended the strike, citing the intervention of the National Judicial Council and other stakeholders.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), had last year signed Executive Order 10 for the enforcement of the constitutional provision of financial autonomy for judiciary at the state level.

But the 36 state governors kicked against the Executive Order.

However, in May, the governors and JUSUN signed a Memorandum of Action for the full implementation of financial autonomy.

The PUNCH learnt that about nine months after the strike was suspended, many governors have yet to grant full financial autonomy to the judiciary in their states.

Ondo State government has returned some schools to their missionary proprietors.

Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu made the disclosure while receiving the newly inaugurated executives of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Ondo State chapter led by the State Chairman, Rev. Father Ansel Ologunwa.

He named the schools to include St Thomas Aquinas College, St. Louis Girls Grammar School, Akure and two primary schools.

The military administration of David Ikpeme seized missionary schools in September 1976.

The governor said his administration approved the return of some schools to the sole missionary ready to take them back.

In a landmark policy reversal, Akeredolu said, “We have promised that we will return schools to missionaries and we are keeping to our promise. It is only the Catholic Church that has shown interest.

“A group of people are opposed to it. Our position is that, if you are not interested in taking ownership of your school, don’t discourage others."

“Catholic Church has requested for two secondary schools and two primary schools and I have approved it. They are sorting it out now and there is no problem. Aquinas College, St Louis, and two primary schools. Those are the ones which we have approved. We are not running away from it.”

Matina Agawua, a native of Yelwata, a remote settlement in Nasarawa State, has opened up on the reason for being involved in an abominable act.

In an interview with The Nation, Agawua said when she lost her first husband, she decided to remain a widow for 13 years.

She said but she could not conceive in the marriage which had lasted more than six years.

The woman said her in-laws threatened to show her the way out on the ground of not being able to have a child for their son.

“We had been married for more than six years but were still childless due to my husband’s fault, according to doctor’s report, and I was hearing from the grapevine that he was planning to take a second wife on the grounds that I could not give him a child.”

She said while she took fertility test, her husband did not deem it necessary to go for a medical check-up to ascertain the source of the problem.

She said she suspected that her husband was suffering from low sperm count which made him unable to father a child as the test she took showed that there was nothing wrong with her.

The woman said it was amid this crisis that she slept with her only son from her first marriage.

She added that to further convince herself about her fertility status, she decided to lure her son, a student in Akwanga, into a secret affair.

She said: “Since he is not comfortable with us going for medical checkup on the assumption that nothing was wrong with him, I decided to convince my little son, who is just about 16 years old and schooling in Akwanga."

“I visited him regularly. He stays in a private apartment with my relatives, so I was going there to spend some time with them, especially on weekends when my market is off.

“It was actually difficult making love with my own son, but circumstances forced me to go into it. I needed to be sure of my fertility.

"I know my husband very well. If he discovered I had an affair with a man outside, he would kill me.

“I love him so much and I’m afraid of him, so this evil plan kept ringing in my mind to know how fertile I am. I tried to visit my son in Akwanga mostly when I was on my ovulation period. I decided to develop a crush on him and draw him very close to me. We got intimate and ended up having s*x.

“One faithful day while I was on my ovulation period, I visited him. It was at about 11pm. I held his hand and made him sit beside me.

“I asked him if he had ever had s*x and he said no. I held him in my arms. This time, I felt warm and I think he too did. After that night, I felt extremely embarrassed, and guilty that I committed such an abomination with my own son.

“It was actually a taboo, but I warned him to keep it secret.”
