As an international Recruiter,
I have noticed some things that hinder my recruitment in Nigeria, it is heart breaking when someone comes to me and says I'm relocating to the USA or Canada or wherever, what placement can you get for me and just by chatting with the person, I know that it will have to be a menial job despite the diplomas and degrees.
There is a reason why I have Recruited over 50 expatriates from some unimaginable countries into Nigeria where they got perks like:
3 bedroom furnished apartment in the Lekki area a few bus stops away from the company
2 domestic staffs to do the cleaning, cooking and driving.
Comprehensive health insurance
Approx. 10M annual salary
28 working days paid vacation
3 working days paid leave
Approx 3M in other allowances
Return annual paid tickets to their home country annually
In some cases a lesser paying job for the spouse is guaranteed.

I have facilitated the purchase of some Multi Million houses which Companies bought for their expatriate staffs. The minimum being 700M for 20 units of 3 bedroom flats, and some up to 2 Billion just for these expatriates.

You must be thinking why, below are some of the reasons in my opinion.
1. Education
Our universities don't help matters, they split one course into 3 units for students to study and graduate and use 20 years old techniques / syllabus to teach. As a result, fresh Nigerian graduates and even West African graduates can not stand fresh graduates from other parts of the world until they have experience or go for more classes. I begin to ask, what is the craze to get admission and graduate for?

2. Lack of seriousness on the part of the students
As if that isnt enough, many of their results were bought in the sense that in a new setting, they can't defend this result. A Bsc Econs holder couldn't pass an exam to place her in a 200level equivalent in the USA. While in school, a lot of them joined cults and turned to private prostitutes just to get the good grades. News Flash!!! Recruiters are fully aware and can't be deceived.

3. Inability to speak good English
What breaks my heart now is that many of them can't speak good English. They are well educated in the best schools but nothing to show for it. If that cert. goes missing today, and they have the opportunity to write another exam to receive a new result, 80% won't pass. Yes, English isn't our mother tongue but when you want a job in a company where English language is spoken, you have to speak English too. Your command of English is highly important. It can speak a lot about you even before you present your certs.

4. Greed
Now, once in a while, I see a graduate who has ticked all the wrong boxes still forming "I know my worth and wont settle for less". I'll simply tell you to call me next week as that's when I'll be recruiting for the big fishes and that will be the end. The bad part of these incompetence is that you never know you have them. Hence, there's nothing to lower those over inflated egos.

5. Nonchalant attitude
Some feel once they have gotten their certs esp. the 1st class and 2nd class upper, they have tried abeg. Cut them some slack, give them a break. But they don't understand that its just the beginning. You must seek more exposure by all means. Keep reading, keep find ways to polish your trophy, keep learning from those who are there.
For example; I can say, 90% of graduates, cant write a standard cover letter, 85% cant write a standard Resume / CV. My mum looked at an applicants cv one day, laughed and said, My CV was as naive as this when I applied for my first job. Meaning, that CV was in vogue in the 1970's!!! I'll talk more on the CV later.

6. Unrealistic desires
Okay, we all know you didn't spend years in the Uni for nothing. You didn't go to Boko Haram infested areas during your service for nothing etc. But baby, its time to wake up! Life isn't rosy anymore. There is tight competition out there. There are over 2000 people better than you graduating every year. The best tool you have when job hunting is experience. I daresay experience is more valuable than degrees in some cases. Start where you are as long as i can recharge your phone, transport you to and from work and pay your basic bills, it will be worth it.
Learn from Dami:
Dami (not real name) ticked 3 wrong boxes and due to the strict requirement, could never see the light of the job. What did Dami do?
He wrote a new application letter volunteering to work for free only asking to be allowed to benefit from the Company's transport as he lives far. 2 years later, Dami got a job in that company as an Assistant Mgr.

7. Lack of Packaging
You are a brand, you wish to be the face of a company, how can you sell the company in a good image if you can't sell yourself? Start with your CV and cover letter.
I don't care where you are from unless the job specifically asked for candidates from a particular region. telling me you have an experience as a waiter in a 7* hotel when applying for the post of a teacher will make me shove your resume in the bin.
Indicate all that apply and leave out the unnecessary details. I skim through 80 - 100 Cv's in 1hr or more. Meaning at a glance, I want to see what I want shouting back at me in your resume. Keep it straight to the point and Brief. Don't lie! Be creative, learn new ways to write a cv. Always ask someone who likes you to proof read for you. Always run a spell check. Don't have one CV. I have more than 8. Always create a new CV to fit the new job. Indicate in the section for skills, all your skills which was listed as a requirement.

8. Failing to test all spirits
Apply to all positions you feel you are qualified for.
Secret: You don't need to have it all. Hr Managers are there to brush you up!

Well, it depends on the scenario, notwithstanding, as a general rule, ‘YES you do. You need to know how to write a catchy cover letter. The reason is not far fetched. How should I then write my cover letter?

First, it must get the reader’s attention. If you have ever written or read an exceptional narrative essay before, you know that the opening sentence(s) or paragraph means a lot in keeping someone glued to such piece. This approach works best for those who have a familiar person who is already working with the outfit. If you don’t, you can still make your mark by researching about the company in order to build your points. In that case, mention the job you’re applying for and where you found the advertisement.

Second, getting their interest is paramount here. Let them know why you want to work for the company. This will reflect that you have done some research. Give it all you can by searching for information relating to the company online. Then, explain why your application should be accepted by Including your personal information about why you are a good match for the job. Create a strong connection between your abilities and their needs

Third, here, mention your experience, qualifications or qualities you know they are looking for.

Lastly, let them know that you look forward to discussing your qualifications further. Also provide your email address and phone number. Don’t forget to thank them for their time.

So, when next you’re sending your CV out, do yourself a big favour by accompanying it with a cover letter and not just leaving the body of your mail blank. Do everything humanly possible to know how to write a catchy cover letter. Otherwise, engage the services of professionals that are vast in this vicinity.

Rather than pay the company, I know most decent companies may see that as exploiting, I suggest you offer to work without pay. At least with that you only need to finance your transportation and feeding for the period

I have a first hand experience of these. Years ago while studying to be a medical laboratory scientists, during breaks I approach big hospitals and laboratory to work without pay.

The first lab I worked did not give me any pay but the experience I gather so assisted me in my education I got an academic award plus good grades.

After my education while waiting for NYSC, I approached a bigger hospital and quoted my experience from the other lab, I was given a temp job with no salary, but little allowance, free lunch tickets and I got free ride from work by joining other staffs or company bus.

Try this and you will get the skill, experience and ultimately the Job.

How will it be if you have a degree in Education and you approach a school to teach without pay?
A degree in business or accounting and you approach an audit firm or organization?
Etc

Don't think the Job is waiting for you, you approach the Job and show your competence.

I think i need the guardian of an HR personnel here. I titled my CV as a "Mechanical Engineer" but i have not been getting interview invites these days even as am qualified for most jobs advertised.

This is my career path summarized here.

1) At the completion of my National Diploma in mechanical engineering technology (Best Student of my set), I couldn’t get a placement for Industrial training, I joined a roadside mechanic in quest for knowledge. I spent 1 year in repair, maintenance and reconditioning of automotive engines. It was an eye opener for me. Thereafter I took a teaching job while I was looking for admissions. ( Automotive Technology Experience – Gasoline Engines)
2) I got admission into another polytechnic for HND while I was applying for Direct entry into universities. I spent 6 months at HND studying HND mechanical engineering technology -PLANT option ( Power Plant and construction equipment Knowledge)
3) Gained admission to the best university in Nigeria (Mechanical Engineering -200level). My CGPA at 400 level was 4.15/5.00. I couldn’t get a good placement for SIWES, I joined an haulage company as Auto technician of Heavy duty Trucks ( Diesel Mechanic) out of humility ( It takes humility to learn). The workshop was dominated by collection of road side diesel mechanics. It was not easy for those folks to transfer knowledge so I borrowed two Diesel Mechanics textbooks from our library in other to complement what I gained during the period, and gradually I was compiling my SIWES report. I spent 6 months and went back to school. I had 5.00/5.00 that semester. My report became a reference for diesel mechanics till today. My CGPA skyrocketed. (Automotive Technology Experience – Diesel Engines)
4) At 500Level, I opted for Production Engineering Option. Developed knowledge of Production management, Machining, Manufacturing e.t.c. Seminal Topic was “Development of Quick Stop Mechanism for Lathe Machine”. ( Production Engineering Knowledge)
5) During NYSC, I served at a Multinational Beverage company (1 year), It was an eye opener for me in the field of bottling technology, I groomed myself in that area. I read all the books and company’s SOPs I could get on bottling technology, maintenance & maintenance management ( Bottling Machines and packaging equipment )and Utility equipment (Pumps, compressors, boilers e.t.c) ( Bottling Technology and maintenance management Knowledge)
6) After NYSC I joined a Multinational Beverage company ( Beer), As maintenance Technician. I gained so much knowledge in maintenance management (Actual maintenance, planning , scheduling and execution). I spent 2 years. ( Maintenance & Maintenance Management Experience)
7) Ref. No. 6, During this time, I was running my MSC in Industrial Engineering at one of the best Universities in Nigeria ( full time because I was doing a shift work).Where I was working triggered my interest in that course. (Operations and Industrial Management Knowledge)
My cross over to an Oil and Gas engineering services provider (EPCI company). I Started as a Design Engineer – Subsea Structures , Hence knowledge of Design Engineering and familiarization with international codes and standards ( men, they are numerous ASTM , ASME, API, BS, DNV, ISO). I read all books I could lay my hand on to understand oil and gas generally in other to deliver on this job. 9) I was in an EPCI company now so, after Design is Fabrication and Construction, I joined the construction team as a Project Engineer , it was my first time and I quickly needed to blend with the experienced Italian and Indian guys I was teaming with. So I began to search books online and offline, in three months I got what I needed and started delivering like I was experienced ( Welding Engineering , Engineering drawing, Engineering Materials and Specifications, Fabrication and Construction Management, Project management e.t.c). Here is a framework for prayer based on the word ACTS:

Adoration: begin by remembering who God is and praising him for his creation and redemption.

Confession: admit that you are not the person you ought to be and bring to mind the things that you've done wrong. Say you're sorry.

Thanksgiving: spend time thinking about the good things in your life and thank God for them. Count your blessings.

Supplication: last of all, ask God for things. We may not understand how prayer 'works', but we can still believe God hears us when we pray.

We can learn a lot about prayer from seeing how people prayed in the Bible. When we do that we see that they didn't always find it easy either and that they probably had many of the same questions and frustrations that we do.

So here are 10 verses to encourage us as we think about prayer (all NIV).

4. Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective (James 5:16).

5. When hard pressed, I cried to the Lord; he brought me into a spacious place (Psalm 118:5).

6. I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you (Matthew 5:44).

7. In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans (Romans 8:26).

8. The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth (Psalm 145:18).

9. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).

10. Pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17).
