Benin was more powerful because the Portuguese Armed them and they had Portuguese Mercenaries and Military advisers but Oyo had the largest land mass and population. The Oyo were far better Administrators.

After the 17 th Century Benins power went downhill . Ogendenge of Ekiti parapo even captured territory from Benin n the 19th century and the Ijebu drove them out of Lagos after both the Ekiti and Ijebu had both acquired firearm's.

Oyo was more successful than Benin in administration and devolving power to its people and provinces and so was able to administer a larger territory that is why Oyo had several flourishing successful Cities Still existing today including Porto Novo ,Ibadan, Iwo , Abeokuta, Osogbo , Ota,Offa ,Badagry, Ilaro, Ogbomosho, Ilorin, Ilesa, Ijebu , Iwo, Ilaro, Gbogan,Saki Iseyin, Ondo Atakampe(Togo) etc

In short Benin Empire was more Powerful but Oyo was more Successful even leaving strong successor States such as Ibadan , Abeokuta , Ajase (Porto Novo) and Ijebu in place.

A big lesson on the importance of administration and devolution of Power.
Benin power never went downhill that oyo became economically richer and militarily stronger than it, at 17 century the oba of benin economic monopoly was hauled, but later regained it back by the end of the century

Ogendegbe attacked edo territories in search of slaves to raid, news getting to benin on reaching the oba he sent an esan warlord to displace ogendegbe and his men out of those areas and they fled till ogendegbe was later captured by the British forces,
Never a time was edo military power or economic power weaker than oyo, the military and economic power of benin was way way stronger than oyo, benin economic decline in 16 never altered it prospects or shaked the empire, it only affect is wealth compare to previous years
As experienced by the Europeans

Oyo on the other hand was a fast growing kingdom in the 17c, it never got to the stage on empire before it was sacked by fulanis, the kingdom prospered on slaves raids and soon gained recognition by various yoruba state not through military conquest persay, but rather through social influence, some yoruba territories did pay homage to it willingly for military protection, but they maintained thier various autonomy, the alafin couldn't dictate for them as they maintained thier political autonomy,
Oyo kingdom grew subsequently through social recognition and admiration, and so many inflow of foreigners hoping to strengthen the kingdom

The political system of oyo was quack thats why various disunity arose, the military was very weak and thats why various kingdom wanted to sack it, at the time dahomey raided oyo for slave it was not even a kingdom then, but oyo forces managed to pull through this is to tell you how weak the military power was
Calling oyo an empire as an over exaggeration

I will tell you why

Ijebu and various other yorubas the European eccounterd. during the oyo reigned seems not to have told the Europeans that they were overlorded by a ruler, they had traded with the Europeans with pure autonomy which would not be possible if oyo had ruled over these yoruba states they claimed they overlorded

And again oyo influence during his reigned was really not noticeable by the Europeans if indeed it was influential or was an empire at these times, even when European visited oyo this period they see not to notice it influence even in the heart of oyo town

Was oyo really an empire or an over exaggerated mythical empire to save yoruba historical face

Oyo was a kingdom and shouldnt in a way be compared to benin, benin way ahead of oyo in all ramphication

Remove nri... Those ones didn't have any Empire... But between Benin and Oyo, if u talk abt longevity of both empires , its Benin that has the longest ruling Empire... But as about territories conquered, Oyo has it... And that's what contributed to their early downfall by early 19th century
Oyo never conquered any empire oyo was formed through social agreements through probably econmic influence, it wanted to strengthen is military when crisis set in, no vassal paid homage to it, it was like sokoto influence on its northern state, just the way we admire america but yet it has no influence on nigeria thats how oyo was to the yoruba states it had no military autonomy over it neither did they pay homage to it, it was only admired just as ife was admired as a religiou cemtre,

Now dont get this wrong dahomey attacked oyo which resulted oyo attacking and subduing it, that is the only war oyo had to fight before the yoruba war broke out

So oyo literally was never an empire....

Lay with Yorubas? You think everyone is a tribalist knucklehead like you who sees everything from the point of taking sides? Your own brother PhysicsQED, the most informed Benin person ever to grace Nairaland, will agree that while Benin was the more powerful empire from the mid-15th century to the mid-17th century, Benin fell on evil days from that period (i.e., the 17th c.) until later in the 18th century, during which Oyo was the more powerful empire.

And you've never kicked anyone's ass on this forum, let alone mine. You are not intelligent enough or knowedgeable enough to.

You were running around on that thread like a headless chicken, incapable of understanding my point and incapable of making yours. Didn't have the time nor the patience to indulge you in your headless chicken game, so I left you there. Go and play with your mates, I am not one.
Now i want to laugh, haha...

The only fall benin had was economic power loss which it lost because of its unending civil which struck various times in 1600Ad, they lost some vassal during this period and regained them back by 1700AD,the Europeans made it know benin fell during this period economically not militarily wise

Benin military were so large that if there was internal crisis it wont affect its military power

Benin economic power fell by 17c ....when the benin monopoly was reduced by influx flow of several European to it shores despite its economical fall it had monopoly over some states despite the economic fall oyo could have not even be richer than benin some niger delta states at this time would even be way far richer than oyo, which probably never existed, if it did exist, benin was trying to expand its economic piwer into further interior when the clash of intrest btw benin and British fell out,

Please go read afc ryder, benin and the Portuguese relationship

Benin never fell militarily throughout till it fell with
The British forces, during 19 century few months before the benin british war, part of benin armies
Where in owo to burn it down by the orders of the oba of benin because they revolted

European saying benin fell had their standard for saying so, benin never fell to the point it would sweat to pull oyo forces down

If you have read samuel johson book on yoruba war, you would see benin played a vital role, supplying military wares to yoruba warriors and even sent forces that defeated the oyo in ekiti.

I dislike people who just read and dont rationalized what they have read it makes them have baked knowledgeable people

1) The point is at what standard did the European consoder benin economic fall or even the military fall,

2)did the benin fall affect or anyway strengthened the oyo empire, the answer is no

3) how true was the oyo economic and military strength in their peak to the benins

4) how varse are you in both knowledge

I see you have little knowledge on benin history TAO11 wouldn't even say this rubbish you spilled up there, because she knows much to spill such errors

Oyo and Benin were great during different times in history. Benin achieved greatness first; but from the late 17th century and in the 18th century before the internal strife in Oyo and pressure from Fulani jihadists, Oyo was definitely greater than Benin.

Nri was never an imperial power, so I don't understand why it is being compared to the other two.

We restructured in 1960, restructured during every coup, even restructured parliamentarianism for presidential, yet people talk "restructure" like we've never restructured before and don't know how many constitutions we've been through.

The restructuring Nigeria needs is that of the minds of we the people. It's the one thing that's remained constant through all past restructures and it's time we start looking within instead of blaming the structure as if we'd like the new structure, which we won't.
You dey yarn nonsense bros restructuring is continuous to social changes and demands, we are yet to restructure to what suit us, untill then we will keep amending to suite what we want, like a guy comment up there said if something is not working you fix, and if doesn't work you try a new pattern,
Nigeria having been asking for restructuring since independence so as every nation, brexit is a form of modern of restructure too, i need not to mention other notable countries who had series of resturing,
Nigeria never asked to move from parliamentary to military or presidential, they found themselves in it, unwillingly

I should be calling you boy instead, because everything you made mentioned holds no point, how does decaying bodies found in benin relate to benin setbacks in present times,....

Am just schoolng you to read more on benin history before you make wrong assumptions,

Benin on several occasions had been reduced to a village, after several civil wars but it still regained itself, but what we having today is opposite benin or edo should be way ahead, african countries if it was independent, because it had the political and international power to do such, nigeria and the British destroyed those qualities,

2. I do not wish Benin bad, neither did I say Benin will never rise again.

3. All I was telling you is to not put the decline of Benin on Nigeria. It was already in decline before the birth of Nigeria.
Benin had several times decline if you would take time to study and read benin history but they always pickup very fast, my blames still goes to Nigeria and the British,
With a solid history of our past i believe benin would overcome is corruption struggles again

And if they used those degratory words, you decided to use it too, without any consciousness regarding hatespeech or tribal bashing to the benin people, mtcheew

Quit blaming Nigeria.

Benin was a magnificent impressive city in earlier centuries, but by the time of the Expedition of 1897, the place had been reduced to a squalid underpopulated place no bigger than a village, with bodies rotting in various parts of it, and buildings collapsing with no one to take care of them. Internal strife wrecked the city before Nigeria was created. Quit blaming others.
These derogatory words is not needed, if benin was reduced to a village does it now connote to its future failure
Do you how many times benin was burnt down in ancient times, go read benin civil war, we could have stood as a country independently but the British wanted to hide their tracks of injustice
And further punish the kingdom, they made us denounce the various vassal under the empire forcefully, soon as the country nigeria began edo was left behind to nuture her wounds, but we picked up fast than they expected, corruption was not in the benin empire, stealing was not, throwing dirt was forbidden and so many more of all this began , as soon as the country began corruption start setting in into the kingdom, our religion we held so dearly was stigmatized by other tribes and they began nickname us degratory names,
We need out of this shit hole, we would be way better by now if we remained independent as a country definitely there will be some fall backs, but we could been way better,
