Politics › Police Inspector Shot Dead By Patrol Team-turning The Gun On Themselves! by gulfer(op): 6:40am On Feb 21, 2012
ENUGU—A Police Inspector, Clement Onwueguta, attached to Uwani Police Division in Enugu South local government area was shot dead weekend by a police patrol team which mistook him for an armed robber.

Four members of the police patrol team who killed the police officer have been detained and are currently being interrogated, with a view to ascertaining the person that actually fired the shot.

Vanguard learnt that the deceased police officer, who was dressed in mufti at the time of the incident on Friday night, was sighted with a pistol along the Railway Line at the end of Aku Street within Ogui New Layout and was ordered by the police patrol team from Ogui Police division to stop for a search.

Rather than complying with the directive, the late inspector reportedly took to his heels, prompting the patrol team to give him a hot chase.State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the incident yesterday, said the inspector was running toward the Uwani police barracks, which is about 100 metres away, when one of the police men shot him.

He said: “Inspector Onwueguta was not identified as a policeman when sighted from a distance somewhere along Aku Street, which is under Ogui Police division.

“People always trek from Edinburgh Road to Uwani through Aku Street and reports available to us show that hoodlums always attack people within that area.

“On that fateful day, February 17, men of Ogui Division had gone out on a routine patrol at the black spot. When they were coming, they sighted somebody from a distance and thought he was a hoodlum. The policemen shouted at him to stop but he took to his heels because he was alone.

“The operatives gave him a hot chase and in the course of the chase, the policemen heard a gun shot believed to have come from either one of them which eventually brought him down.

“On getting to the spot where he laid, the policemen searched and found on him a Beretta pistol and police ID card bearing the name Inspector Clement Onwueguta.

“It was a clear case of mistaken identity but members of the patrol team are already being interrogated. It was, indeed, an unfortunate incident.”

Meanwhile, the corpse of the police inspector who hails from Rivers State, had been deposited at an unnamed hospital for autopsy.

What that, probably, video doesn't show:
- The policeman volunteering when others refused;
- The policeman checking tens of other similar bags that turned out to be bags of rice etc;
- The policeman's oga giving him instructions;
- Pictures of his loved ones and dependants mourning him and contemplating life without him; and
- The policeman being briefed that he could use his "metal detecting wand" to check if a package is a bomb or not.

This man has given up his life so others may live. A high price to pay and deserving of respect and sober reflection.

If we feel he was 1) rash; 2) inadequately trained; and 3) poorl equipped, let's take it up with the Authorities.

I pray should any of us have to make that difficult decision, others may at least appreciate the sacrifice made and work together.

@Bolded

Nigeria's police actions has historically been rash.

Their modus operandi is to take(rash) action, then think about its consequence(s) later.

Be it murdering innocent Nigerians, shooting peaceful protesters, extrajudicial murder of Nigerians in their custody etc

To bad that the consequence of his rash action is spontaneous; no time left to ponder on the consequence(s) of his action
I suspect that this guy deliberately commited suicide or can one explain what is in this video. If not the prevalence of camera phones that made this possible, they would have reported this as gallantry rather than the ill-trained force that was exposed. Anyway, RIP sergeant.

If it is proven  beyond doubt that the teacher was highhanded then he should be punished, and if it is also proven that the student does not merit being a SSS 3-WAEC candidate, he should be demoted forthwith.
To think he was registered by someone in the teaching service of Oyo State to increase the WAEC failure rate or to possibly cheat his way through with his father's support; go to the tertiary institution, buy his way through and be enlisted into the customs service while the father is still in service so as to be promoted through the ranks using his influence.

It's fine if you compare with each other but just making it obvious a calculation is incorrect if it purports to be 21mpg and even higher than obtains in US for that same vehicle
Exactly what i also tried to allude to in my contribution earlier comment on this it appeared unusually high for a SUV. Thinking alould, could the odometer be calibrated in km/l rather than mile/gallon. Just my thought on this one.

maxxy:
I drive a 2000 Ford Explorer (6 cyl, 4.0 L, Automatic 5-spd) that I think is not fuel efficient. This is because the Mechanic says that my catalytic converters have been removed and am therefore burning fuel more than necessary, so I decided to do a test of the MPG (miles per gallon) in order to determine whether to replace the converters.

Results indicate that on the average, 2.5 gallons (9.5 litres) gives me 54 miles, which is approximately 21.5 MPG. This is driving within Lagos (Mainland to Island) in traffic I would consider fair. Other specs include driving at maximum of 70km/hr and without AC.

Is this fuel consumption fair?

Where are the gurus pls?
I am not sure this calculation is right or how were you able to determine 2.5 gallons (9.5litres). I will have that you do it with a full tank to half-tank measurement, use this to divide the mileage achieved. For instance my SUV with a fuel of 19.3gallons that travels within the lagos traffic using AC yields about 140miles to the half tank mark. Truck is rated at 19MPG combined (highway and city) while mine shows approximately 16MPG for the lagos stop and start traffic. I know it can be better and it is always better with lighter traffic. Best mileage on a full tank to the low fuel warning light has been about 320miles (514km) for 17.5gallons less reserve.

Yeah KenJade, but Alex Fergusson will always tell you the way a team looses is based on the coach's approach to the match. I insist Allegri should use Milan's greatest strenght which has always been a good midfield and a superb defence. I never was in support of Pirlo's sale, and especially to a perenial rival. Juve will never sell a one-legged Piero to Milan for 100million pounds.
