Crime › Re: I Was Harrased By Police For Having A Foreign Number On Contact List by hahn(m): 2:00pm On Jul 21, 2016
sszest:
I have always read news of police brutality online but never fully understood what the victims went through until I had a first hand experience on Wednesday, 13th July, 2016.
On that very day, which has become a day I will never forget in my life, I was headed to jibowu to assist my sister get a bus back to the east after her visit to Lagos. Just before the park area, there was a police checkpoint and as I was walking towards the park with my sister, one of the police officers at the checkpoint signaled me to come. When I went to answer him, he demanded for my phone, I brought it out, he collected it and started scrolling through my contacts. The next thing I heard was "You are a criminal! Wetin foreign number dey do for your phone?……...". The contact in question is that of my school friend who just went to the UK for his masters program, but before I could say Jack, I have been pushed into their vehicle, a danfo bus with the registration number, XU754LND.
Each time I demanded to know what exactly my crime was, the response I got was something like "Keep Quiet! Shut Up! You are a thief! You are a criminal!…..."
My sister was not also spared of the harassment. At that point, I had to raise my voice attracting passerby's who also demanded to know when having a foreign contact has become a crime. Suddenly, their oga instructed them to move.
I don't know how the thoughts came to me but before they moved, I jumped out of the bus through the window. With the heightened tension and the increasing number of people gathering there, they just threw my phone at me and sped off.

The following day, a friend of mine suggested I make a report at a police station. I took the advice and went to Alagbon Police Statio, Ikoyi. Do you know what they told me there? That since they no longer have my phone, I shouldn't worry, that "It's a normal thing". The Nigerian police literally told me that harassment of innocent citizens is a normal thing. Who else do I report to?

My understanding is that there are dozens of similar cases that go unnoticed daily especially in Lagos. As it is, I think the only way police brutality may be put to a near end is by giving such cases as much publicity as possible. May be at some point in the future, someone in a position of authority may be touched to take genuine actions to put an end to it and not just pay lip service.
Rossikk, you dumb twit. Did you see the bolded? That happened to Nigerians in Nigeria o and you were on the other thread talking about the justice system like it has ever helped anyone. Dingo like you tongue

No country has a perfect judicial system, least of all China, where summary executions and torture are commonplace in their judicial system. In the USA, people are routinely shot and killed by police for no reason, with no policeman arraigned for the crime.

Shut up. There is NOTHING the court did wrong in that story.
That you did willfully and unlawfully set fire to burn part of the Ernest Hotel on Bamishele Street, off Allen Avenue, Ikeja, Lagos, valued at N17,864,900, property of one Ernest Uwanyerem.

This charge will not stick. It would be difficult to prove 'willful' damage (emphasis on willful).

Those two will definitely get more fair justice than YOU could ever get in a Chinese court for a similar case.
Oh yeah? Do you mean the same justice given to Nigerians who have been locked up in Nigerian cells under "awaiting trials" for years after "raiding"?

Do you mean the same country where it's citizens have to pay to report a case? The same country where you have to buy fuel in patrol vans just so the police can respond to an emergency?

It's called the Uthman Dan Fodio spirit of intimidation, oppression and ultimate takeover of others lives and property.

The current arrangement is suffocating everyone, except the fulani herdsmen and folks.

We won't cede any inch of our lands for any murderous and archaic grazing. The fulani herdsmen must modernise; society isn't going any backward.

These folks obviously have some sinister motives up their sleeves. Anything the North opposes is what will bring development to Nigeria.

Cattle rearing is a PRIVATE business. FG has no business taking over people's land and then giving them to some murderous fulani herdsmen, all in the name of peace. Bullshiit.

They should ranch their cattle or have the entire Futa Djallon to themselves.
It is quite unfortunate that we have a government that is oblivious of it's responsibilities and confused about their priorities.

I see no rationale behind a government dictating how private businesses should be run. They really have no right to impose the fulani herdsmen on people who are against it.

Instead on focusing on boosting infrastructure, making loans available and enlightening these illiterate "business men" this government thinks that by throwing orders around they will produce anything worthwhile.

Pathetic undecided

There's enough land up North. Let them give them all the land they need for their grazing.
I tire o.

Why can't the government give them loans to set up ranches instead? By doing so they will create a demand for grass and entrepreneurs can take advantage and start selling grass to them. Also there are more benefits of ranching as opposed to grazing.

It's a win win situation really smiley
