Sanusi, PFN disagree over Islamic banking | Print | E-mail Written by Hassan Ibrahim Sunday, 26 June 2011 The governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, has said that those opposed to the introduction of Islamic banking in Nigeria are not conversant with current happenings in the world as the system is being practised in the United Kingdom and other countries of the world dominated by Christians. He spoke on the BBC Hausa service monitored in Kaduna at the weekened, even as the Kaduna State chapter of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) expressed concern over moves to introduce Islamic banking in the country. The PFN while condemning the move said the action of the CBN governor at a time when Nigerians were still battling to douse the tension created by political and religious crises was unfortunate. However, Sanusi explained that the move for the introduction of the JAIZ Bank in Nigeria had been on even before he assumed leadership in the CBN and disclosed that other superior officers in the CBN who were Christians had no problem with Islamic banking in Nigeria. According to him, a major stakeholder in the JAIZ Bank was an Igbo businessman who saw the prospects and had since invested a lot towards the noble cause. Nigerians, he said, should not be afraid of Islamic bank as it was going to be a non-interest banking which had been practised successfully in many parts of the world. But the PFN in a statement by its chairman, Bishop David Bakare, said that the action of the CBN governor would further polarise the nation along religious lines as well as raise suspicions about his intention no matter how good it could be. “Honestly if the CBN governor had embarked on this advocacy for Islamic banking as a religious leader it would have made a better sense than as a government official. Therefore, he should come out and tell the nation whose errand he is running and for whom he speaks. Is he speaking for himself, Islam, or for the government of Nigeria? “ Sanusi should please be advised not put the nation into another avoidable distraction and dangerous crises. We call on the president not to wait until trouble begins before acting,” he said. |
Bishop to CBN boss: Your job or Islamic banking From NOAH EBIJE, Kaduna Sunday, June 26, 2011 Chairman, Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Kaduna State chapter, Bishop David Bakare, has advised Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, to resign from office before advocating the introduction of Islamic banking in the country. In a statement yesterday in Kaduna, Bishop Bakare said that Sanusi would be better off in the Islamic banking agenda if he (Sanusi) were a religious leader. The fire-spitting cleric therefore, advised the CBN boss to choose between the idea of Islamic banking and his job at the nation’s apex bank, saying that advocating for a religious banking at this time of political crisis in the country could aggravate the tensed situation. According to the statement, “Honestly, if Governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi had done this advocacy for Islamic banking as a religious leader, it would have made a better sense than as a government official. Therefore, Sanusi should come out and tell the nation whose errand he is running and for who he speaks; is it for himself, Islam, or government of Nigeria? “The PFN, Kaduna State, strongly condemns the Central Bank governor’s Islamic banking agenda at a time like this in Nigeria when we are still battling to douse the tension created by the last ‘political’ crisis with all the evident religious manifestations.“This obviously is an insensitive and reckless act of the highest order coming from such a high ranking officer of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. “No right thinking Nigerian would ordinarily venture into such a sensitive matter at any time in such a nation like Nigeria without an evil motive to create more tension in the nation or worse still to start another religious fighting such as had never been before in this nation.“Somebody, please, help tell Sanusi to let the sleeping dog lie, and not put the nation into another avoidable distraction and dangerous crisis. We call on President Goodluck Jonathan not to wait until trouble begins before acting,” Bishop Bakare said. http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2011/june/26/national-26-06-2011-002.html
Mr fanatic Bishop ,if you took the Islamic bank as service to a people that would ordinarily like the services. Then it will seem okay and the peoples right to such services. If the services are not illegal.Knowing you are a bigot and fanatic.I doubt if you may and can see such at this point. Some Nigerians find it okay.Get use to it.An example, you like Burkutu and i may not.Simply because you like and i don't ,the government will not outlaw it.Even when medically it is known to be harmful to consumers. Its your right to drink it and its not my biz.So i can simply walk away.choice and variety kalas ! Why is it that people like your will not suggest yours but want Muslims to always join you unconditionally. As you suggest he should quite before doing this because he is public service, you should also know its not your place too Mr bishop. Are you working for the Government, politicians or what? ![]() |
Rev Ladi Thompson’s verdict:Expect more bombings •Boko Haram recruits more Northern youths •Soldiers, policemen are members of sect By WILLY EYA, VICTOR EBIMOMI and SUNDAY ANI Sunday, June 26, 2011 More Stories on This Section Across the land, apprehension remains high, following the recent bomb effect at the police headquarters in Abuja. The situation is all the more troubling in the face of the strident stance of the purveyors of this deadly act – the Boko Haram. As at the last check, the organization has rebuffed every entreaty to stand down and scuffed at suggestions to negotiate. Instead, the leadership of the group has continued to promise more, deadlier attacks. It says that more of such deadly devices would be detonated across the country in the months ahead. However, while some see the whole development as having political undertone, others insist that the problem is deeper than that. But Painting an ominous picture of the situation, founder and Senior Pastor of The Living waters Unlimited Church, Rev. Oladimeji Ladi Thompson said that the nation would, in the months ahead, witness simultaneous bomb-blasts if she does not immediately strengthen her security network. His postulation came just as a senior member of the Penticostal Christian community, Archbishop (Prof) Peter Okoduwa, advised that the Federal Government should dialogue with the dreaded Boko Haram sect if its demands are reasonable and fall within the constitution of the land. Thompson regretted that more northern youths were being recruited and indoctrinated to sustain the evil agenda of some powerful forces. He is also the international coordinator of Macedonian Initiative, a non-government, non-denominational organization established to provide succour to Christians persecuted because of their belief in Jesus Christ. The conflict resolution expert said it was necessary for people to understand the root cause of the incessant crises and cautioned that the government and its security agencies are dealing with a sophisticated intelligence organization that operates way ahead of them (government and security agencies). The cleric lamented that the sect has penetrated the ranks of the security agencies and warned that if the federal government does not immediately take a decisive action, Goodluck Jonathan may well be the last president of Nigeria as a corporate entity. He expressed shock at what he said is the lackadaisical attitude of the government in handling the Boko Haram issue. He said that bomb-making equipment were being distributed to youths to further cause mayhem in the country.“I am tired of speaking to a government that has blocked ears. I have been predicting correctly the violence in Nigeria since 2000, but the thing is so well organized for the kind of measures they are taking here. I do not want to talk to leaders who want to sit by and watch Nigeria disintegrate. Our security network is still using the same old method when other countries that deal with the same issue have to strengthened their system.’” He regretted that “most Nigerians do not understand the magnitude of the problem.” But reacting to the development, Archbishop (Prof) Peter Okoduwa, has advised the Federal Government to dialogue within acceptable, civilized norms. The cleric maintained that dialogue is not weakness and has been used to solve several problems across the globe.“If what they are demanding is within the constitution, the Federal government can dialogue with them, but if what they are looking for is unconstitutional, there is no basis for dialogue. The security agents should handle them,” he said. He however frowned at the resort to bombing by the sect, saying it looked as if it has declared war with the state or some people are just trying to cause distraction for President Goodluck Jonathan, using the sect. He therefore advised that every Nigerian should rise to the challenge of the sect, especially people from the northern part of the country.“Some people don’t want Jonathan to know what he is doing, that is why they are using Boko Haram for distraction”, he stated. Okoduwa, who opined that the sect could be an offshoot of Al Qaeda, enjoined the intelligence community, particularly the State Security Service and the police to rise to the challange and save the nation the embarrassment of incessant bombings. For a political analyst and political science lecturer at Lagos State University, Dr. Ababakar Momoh, the spate of bombing in the country is political. Momoh, who spoke to Sunday Sun, said the target of the bombers speaks volume of their intention. He said the issue assumed a dangerous dimension after the PDP presidential primaries in April, in which President Goodluck Jonathan emerged the party’s flag-bearer. On claim by Boko Haram that its members are responsible for the bombings, he said: “I cannot say for certain that Boko Haram or any group is responsible. Even though Boko Haram has claimed responsibility, experience has shown that most of the people that come out to claim responsibility when something like this happens, are not always responsible. Maybe it is a cover up. The police should step up investigation and find out the real people behind the disturbing phenomenon.” He insisted that unless there is scientific evidence linking the sect, its claim should be ignored. While berating the police for not living up to the people’s expectations in terms of intelligence gathering and action, the university don submitted that the only way to find a lasting solution to the problem is to find the real culprits, know what their grievances are and see how the issue can be resolved amicably. But the Coordinator of Ijaw Monitoring Group (IMG), Joseph Evah, is charging the northern governors and political leaders to take the initiative to rein in on Boko Haram before dragging the Federal Government into the matter. He noted that such approach worked in the case of the Niger Delta militancy. “ When there was problem in Niger Delta, the governors and political leaders were used to settle it. They were the ones who spent time talking to the boys,” he said. He warned that Nigeria is in a big problem because of the activities of the sect and stressed the need to convene a Sovereign National Conference (SNC) to discuss Nigeria’s future and to know whether there is still need to continue to live together. “Their style of operation shows that there is need for a Sovereign National Conference, to sit and discuss the way forward. If we have a Sovereign National Conference, we will see if there is reason to continue to live together”, he explained. |

Boko Haram: Trial of seven cops stirs anger in Police By Sanni Ologun 8 hours 4 minutes ago Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font IG IG The ongoing trial of seven police officers for allegedly killing the leader of the radical Boko Haram Islamic sect, Mohammed Yusuf, his father-in-law, Baa Fugu Mohammed, and an alleged financier of the group, Buji Foi, is causing ripples in the Nigeria Police Force, it was learnt yesterday. Yusuf was shot dead in July 2009 during one of the crises masterminded by the Boko Haram. Since then, the sect has allegedly engaged in a series of bombings and killing of policemen which culminated in the bombing of the Police Force Headquarters last week Thursday in Abuja. A senior police officer, who spoke under condition of anonymity ,told our correspondent that most officers and men of the force are angry over the issue. The source said officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force were not happy over the terrorism charges preferred against them because four of the accused officers had already been suspended with three others dismissed. He contended that though Mohammed Yusuf died in "questionable circumstances" during the Boko Haram’s uprising in Maiduguri, there were many police officers and members of their families who also lost their lives." "How can the officers be facing terrorism charges for what they allegedly did while fighting terrorists? Yusuf, the leader of the group, died in questionable circumstances after his arrest during the sect’s uprising, but many police stations and patrol vehicles were also burnt. Many of our officers and members of their families were also murdered then and up till now they are still being killed by members of the sect. "To be candid with you, the development has not gone down well with most officers who feel the accused persons are being unjustly persecuted to please people in certain quarters. But one thing is clear, the trial is not good for the morale of officers and members of the rank and file," the source said. Another source said: "What do they expect the police to do when they are being killed and attacked by the Boko Haram? Do they expect them to fold their hands until all of them are wiped out? This is rather unfortunate? "If they are trying them for terrorism, who will try those who killed our officers and members of their families during the crisis and thereafter?" Investigations by The Nation revealed that four of the accused officers were suspended from the force with effect from July 7, 2010 while three others were dismissed. While those suspended included Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) John Abang, ACP Muhammed Akeera Yoonus, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Mohammed Ahmadu and Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mada Babu; those dismissed from the force were Sergeant Adamu Gado, Corporal Anthony Samuel and Corporal Linus Luka. According to a copy of a brief on the charge number FHC/ABS/KD/10C/2011 which was sighted by our correspondent in Abuja, the investigating team said: "Sequel to wide outcry after the airing in Aljazeera Cable Network which depicted extra judicial killings of the leader of the Boko Haram sect, Muhammadu Yusuf, and his followers on July 30, 2009 by some members of the NPF, apparently in response to the sect’s sustained attacks on police properties and other government buildings and facilities and killing of members of the force, the IGP directed a discreet investigation aimed at fishing out the police officers involved. "Police action: Many police officers and other members of the public were interrogated on the matter. On completion of investigation, the following officers and members of rank and file were indicted. "Accordingly, the SIU initiated letters to the FORSEC (Force Secretary) and Force Provost Marshal for disciplinary measures to be taken against them. As a result, they were punished as follows: ACP John Abang, suspended , ACP Muhammad Akeera Yoonus, suspended, CSP Mohammed Ahmadu, suspended, ASP Mada Babu, suspended, SGT Adamu Gado, dismissed, PC Anthony Samuel, dismissed, and PC Linus Luka, dismissed. "The case file was subsequently sent to the Ministry of Justice for legal advice and prosecution. The Attorney General of the Federation commenced prosecution of the matter through Private Prosecutor, Ralph N. Ojobo, at Kaduna Federal High Court in February 2010, but the case was later transferred to Federal High Court 7 Abuja before Hon. Justice Donatus Okorowa." |
Panic grips Maiduguri residents over Boko Haram’s hideouts By Abdulkareem Haruna, Senior Reporter Maiduguri Fear for dear life has cultured many residents of Maiduguri the Borno State capital to continue keeping their mouths shut over the possible hideouts of the dreaded Boko Haram sect members. Although it is obvious that many residents have some inkling on those who are the men behind the Boko Haram masquerades, but no one seems ready to bell the cat and divulge either the identity or the likely hideout of the blood-thirty islamic fundamentalists. Saturday Independent reporter’s temerity at trying to quiz residents on where the enclave of the sect members is, was met with sarcasms or total rebuff from reluctant interviewees who considered such issues “sacred” to be discussed even in hiding places. “Are you out of your mind?” Retorted a source that vowed not to forgive our reporter if his names are mentioned in prints. “As a matter of fact these people living with us here, people do see them but who are you to talk; if you do, just begin to count your remaining days on earth,” he said. Another source that also craved anonymity said “when this whole thing happened we understood that these guys had hideouts in Maiduguri and in Biu towns, but today since the destruction of their headquarters situated behind the Railway Quarters, I don’t think they have a definite hideout again.” Saturday Independent checks revealed that large members of the sect live as normal citizens within and outside Maiduguri and their army of followers had continue to increase by the day. Some had alluded that the sect members have permeated almost all sectors of the state including the state civil service, political parties and even the security agencies. According to renowned public affairs commentator who is also not comfortable with his name being mentioned on issues that pertain Boko Haram sect, “there is no way one can absolve the police, the civil servants and even politicians totally of complicity in this issue because we have seen how people are shot on daily basis with marksman precision, we have seen how vital information that concern key government moves to tackle the problem are being sabotaged and we also have seen how people that have sympathy for a particular political party were slaughtered daily here in Borno State. So the Boko Haram men are unfortunately everywhere. They don’t have one particular hideout. I think they will repeat the mistake they made before 2009 to camp in one particular place. “If you take a close look at how the sect members operate”, the Public Affairs Commentator, continued, “you will get to know they are seriously using high-level intelligence in their heinous operations. No daft can go into this kind of Guerrilla War tactic. And sadly enough, no serious arrest had been made for over a year that the state and Federal Government had been spending resources on security to arrest Boko Haram members.” |
