Glo’s support for African Voices boosts development
On June 22, 2011 · In Technology

By Jide Ajani

Perhaps, one of the glowing attributes of Glo, is its support for development and the exposure of the African continent to the world.

This was again demonstrated last weekend during one of the editions of AFRICAN VOICES, a programme on Cable News Network, CNN, wholly sponsored by Glo.

Its guest was no other person than the Sultan of Sokoto, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Saad Abubakar.

For the wrong perception which though gained ground about Africans but which is fast changing, regarding the backwardness of the continent and the erroneous impression that African royalty lacks intelligence or education, the erudition of Sultan Abubakar, his bluntness and candor, as well as his gait, all came together to give a good projection of royalty on the one hand, and of the concept of rulership of an empire that remains enduring. All thanks to Glo’s sp[onsorship of the programme.

The Sultan declared during the programme that politicians have failed the people of Nigeria just as he maintained that politicians sometimes create crises and give them religious colouration.

The Sultan also made it clear that the issue of Islamic fundamentalism and the crises associated with some of the crises in the country can be traced to the activities of politicians who arm and give the youths money to create crises.

Sultan Abubakar, however, noted that fundamentalists are in the minority.saying:

“Every where you have bad eggs who do not agree with what you are doing but they are always in the minority so you don’t have much problem but the majority are the ones that matter. The majority are the ones who really matter and we are the majority”.

Responding to the role of politicians and the failure to engage constructive development of the nation, he said: “If you say politicians have failed them then you are quite right. The politicians are the ones who even arm these people. They give them money. They arm them, but like I’ve said they are in the minority. The majority of us are peace loving and we are out for a peace loving Nigeria”.

Asked if the traditional rulers have also failed the young men who are involved in Islamic fundamentalism, the Sultan gave an emphatic “NO” response.

Continuing, the Sultan re-affirmed that the traditional institution has not failed the people.

On the issue of religious crisis, the Sultan admitted thus:

“There could be a few cases of religious crises in some places but most of the crises we have in this country (that some people link to religion) are not religious. They are politically motivated and given the colouration of religion”.

The Sultan said he was “very concerned about recent developments whereby politicians use people to create crises and then try to link it with religion. I am very concerned about that.

Even when the President called us to have a talk with us, I brought it up that “politicians should have issue-related campaigns and not about personalities or ethnicity and I have always made it clear that no Christian politician can win an (presidential) election with purely Christian votes and no Muslim politician can win with purely Muslim votes. Nigeria’s population is divided between both religions.

“I can not force you to accept my religion, the Almighty said so in the Quoran. You go your way I go my way and these two ways lead to the Almighty. It is for the Almighty to determine which of these two ways is better to get through to him and that is not for you and I so there should be no problem of converting people by force. We preach peace always.

“On the issue of politics and support for politicians, the Sultan said he “is not a politician; I am the father of all so everyone comes to me”.

All these exposition, thanks to GLO

This is a ridiculous Country. Why should they face trial for the killing of a foolish man who also sent many police officers and citizens to their earlier Grave? Many of those families who lost their breadwinners are currently suffering for his insensitivity. The guy deserve to die to serve as deterrents to others. Those police officers deserve medals for getting rid of the society of him.He does not belong here.

The problem of Boko Haram has long been there. The Former Governor of Borno State,Sheriff also have a case to answer. The body Language from the Muslims in this country suggested that they are in support of Boko Haram.None of their so called Northern leaders have called them to order.Where is Ciroma and his group?I am sure the Illiterates northerners are still not aware of the full impact of what this will generate to if Christians and the South decide to hit back. They are laughing behind the scene and cheering.Let see who will laugh last.
It seems you have an engraved hate for northerners and Muslims from your post.Try google for the recent response form alot of notable Muslims and Northerners condemning the actions of Boko haram. When Buhari spoke and condemn the actions, last i read were people(xtian southerners mostly) saying he has a hand in it.Even IBB condemn it.So what else do you want. Why i say engrave mind, its simply that you pretend not to know or want to know if it is about Muslims or northerners.
The mosque i attended after the incidence hammered on the issue.Blaming the boko haram members actions as unfair and the elites/Governments lack of consideration for the needs of the masses. They Imam caution the youths about the violence and things happening.NSCIA, Ansarul-deen and the sultan condemn there actions.Borno state governor and a whole lot of Muslims. Then why come up with your crazy ideas and suspicions!

Nigerian police retracts 'suicide bomb' claim

The Associated Press

ABUJA, Nigeria -- Nigerian police say they no longer believe an attack last week on police headquarters was a suicide bomb.

National police spokesman Olusola Amore distributed a statement at a press conference Wednesday "correcting the report about the fact that it is (a) suicide bombing."

The statement said the investigation has not been concluded into the attack in the capital of Abuja that left at least two dead. Amore took no questions and gave no further details.

Police said shortly after Thursday's attack that it was a suicide bomb and said they suspected a radical Muslim sect locally known as Boko Haram. They said the bomber was among the dead.

A man claiming to speak for Boko Haram told the BBC and a local paper it was responsible. He did not say, however, if it was a suicide bomb.

How about the numerous ministers for education and others, who hail from SW? what were doing all that time?I say go sleep if you no get better work.
Every University you see today had its story and challenges before it became or got its present location. So go and find out what your other leaders were doing and stop blaming other people for your problems.
If you split the North honestly.where we still even have your brothers in Kogi,Niger and Kwara you will notice that it is 3 geopolitical zones with alot of ethnic groups so i don't understand. If you use tribe then this university hardly cover everyone in the North and if it is by zone.split the northern universities into 3 zones.
Just like Genbuhari rightly stated,ObJ represented the SW whether you like it or not.Because he is respected by all his PDP yoruba peoples and even the Yorubas still recognize him as a yoruba man.He may have gotten votes and the endorsement of the North and other zones but it doesn't stop him being any less yoruba.
Prove us wrong and expel him and cast him out.You may not like obj but he is definitely Yoruba.Do you think in all the other zones the people chanced to power had massive endorsement. The military, political class and elites worked out everything without the input of either the average man on the streets or zone .So if the yoruba elite or political class approve then he becomes Yoruba candidate period.Back to the issue you had about 12 years presidency and numerous position in government, what the hell did you do with it? undecided

Five persons, including an Army officer, identified as Lt. Chinedu Anyanwu, were yesterday killed in the continued clash between Fulani herdsmen and Tiv tribesmen in the border communities in Guma Local Government of Benue State.

Many others were declared missing by displaced persons quartered in camps to save them from further attacks by the herdsmen, who reportedly raided in the communities at night.

Among the missing is a soldier with a patrol team deployed to the area.

The herdsmen have also burnt down more than 1,000 homesteads in about 100 compounds, near Udei town, the largest settlement in the area.

Hundreds of displaced persons are now quartered in camps in Ortese, Daudu and Yelwetta, where the Benue State Emergency Management Agency has provided relief materials and health care service.

An eyewitness, Maureen Tar, who fled with her children to Makurdi, the state capital, to stay with relatives, said the herdsmen invaded Udei Sunday morning, overpowering the soldiers and mobile policemen deployed to the area.

She said there were about 100 herdsmen on horsebacks and foot on their way to the villages.

Benue State Deputy Governor Steven Lawani yesterday visited the displaced persons’ camps in Daudu and Yelwetta, assuring them of government’s assistance.

Lawani said the government would liaise with its Nasarawa State counterpart to resolve the border crises, which have led to deaths and loss of property.

Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor Ejembi Ogwuche said the government had received information about the death of the Army officer and the case of another missing soldier.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Mr Alaribe Ejike confirmed the clash at the Benue-Nasarawa boundary.

He said the area of fighting was not within the jurisdiction of the State Command.

Ejike said people on the Benue side of the border have fled their homes for fear of attacks from neighbouring Nasarawa State.

The attacks are believed to be reprisal attacks by the herdsmen after armed farmers killed the herdsmen traditional ruler, Ardo of Kardarko, Alhaji Habibu Dono and four others last month during the armed conflict. Soldiers were drafted to assist mobile policemen to restore peace to the area.

The herdsmen were said to have served notice of reprisal attacks to the communities around Udei.

More than 100 persons have died in four Benue State local councils since January, following conflicts between herdsmen and farmers. Residents of Makurdi are now living in fear as the conflict draws closer to the Benue State capital.

^^
This is sad and any form of violence should be condemned and the suspects investigated to a successful verdict.
Not with standing from the above you can clearly see that it is there usual conflict. The crisis and fighting between the TIVs and other communities around. It did not start today. They are use to it.Between the TIVs,Jukuns and Fulanis.I tell you it has always being nasty. With the TIVs being mostly the aggressors. The TIVs also if you most know share the same, "we are the dominant tribe ideology" and have little regards for any minority around.

Police chiefs charged…with murder of Boko Haram leaders – Daily Trust

Two assistant police commissioners and a number of other policemen are standing trial in Abuja over the extrajudicial killing of Boko Haram leaders during the Maiduguri crisis in July 2009, sources at the Force Headquarters told Daily Trust.

Assistant commissioners Mr. David Abang and Mr. Akira were charged with illegal killing of sect leader Mohammed Yusuf, his father-in-law Baa Fugu Mohammed and alleged financier Buji Foi, who were killed by policemen after being captured alive in the wake of the crisis nearly two years ago

Police authorities initially claimed that they were either killed in combat or as they attempted to escape, but video clips later emerged showing that the men were executed after capture. This forced authorities to arrest 17 policemen, but no official information has been released since then on what happened to them.

KATSINA, Nigeria (AP) — Gunmen in northern Nigeria have killed eight people in attacks that resembled previous strikes by a feared Muslim sect, police said Tuesday, though authorities said copycats may have been responsible for most of the killings.

Monday's attacks in Nigeria's restive north followed a threat last week by the radical Boko Haram sect that it would escalate attacks in the region.

The sect is responsible for a string of killings which have targeted security officers, community leaders and clerics in Nigeria's northeast. Most of their attacks have occurred in the city of Maiduguri. Last week, the group expanded its reach with a suicide bombing on police headquarters in the capital of Abuja.

But police said Tuesday they believe the sect is only responsible for one of Monday's killings.

Police in Maiduguri said motorcycle-mounted gunmen from the group shot dead an officer of the Nigerian Civil Defense Corps on Monday. The corps helps the police to prevent crime and its officers are unarmed.

Police spokesman Lawal Abdullahi said the gunmen followed the officer after he closed from work and shot him dead at his house — a typical example of the drive-by killings that have become Boko Haram's signature.

Police said they doubt that Boko Haram was responsible for a separate attack that left six people dead in the town of Kankara, more than 440 miles (700 kilometers) from Maiduguri. The attack, far out of Boko Haram's normal area, was the first such attack in its state, police said.

National police spokesman Olusola Amore said gunmen who killed five police officers and a bystander in a bank robbery and another attack on a nearby police station were robbers and opportunists who emulated Boko Haram to throw police off their trail.

Witnesses said the assailants shouted "God is great" in Arabic, leading them to fear they were Boko Haram members. They also threw money to bystanders, witnesses said, creating the impression that their motive was not financial.

"Boko Haram isn't after money," he said, "but we know that people will capitalize on Boko Haram."

Kano state police in north central Nigeria said a police officer was killed Monday in an armed robbery. Kano police spokesman Musa Magaji Majia said the robbers attacked a shopping mall and stole and undisclosed amount of money. Majia ruled out the involvement of Boko Haram.

Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the local Hausa language, wants the implementation of strict Shariah law across Nigeria's north.

Amore said police have seen copycat criminals emerge before. In Nigeria's oil-rich delta, kidnappers first pretended to belong to southern militant groups, he said, but now kidnappings are purely a moneymaking business.

"Boko Haram or not, the police will find the culprits," he said.

Associated Press reporters Njadvara Musa in Maiduguri, Nigeria and Bashir Adigun in Abuja, Nigeria contributed to this report.

Nigerian Islamist kill 7 in police station, bank raid

By Aminu Abubakar (AFP) – 1 hour ago

KANO, Nigeria — Suspected members of the radical Boko Haram Islamist sect on Monday staged simultaneous bomb and gun attacks on a police station and a bank killing seven people, witnesses and local journalists said.

The dead included five policemen, witnesses said, in an attack coming just four days after the sect bombed the country's police headquarters in the capital Abuja killing at least two.

A gang of 10 gunmen launched the two attacks on a police station and a bank in Kankara town, 130 kilometres (80 miles) south of the northern city of Katsina.

"The attackers were 10 in all, divided themselves in two groups and attacked the bank and the police station at the same time with guns and bombs," Kankara resident Salmanu Jabir said.

"One group attacked the divisional police station, killing three policemen , and setting free suspects from cells before bombing the police station," another Kankara resident Danjuma Nakande told AFP on the phone from the town.

He said the attackers fled carrying guns and ammunition, suspected to have been seized from the police station.

"While the attack on the police station was on, another group was robbing the bank," Nakande said.

The group used a bomb to destroy an electronic door of a bank situated along the same road as the police station and made off with cash. They shot dead two policemen and a bank security guard during the robbery, said another resident, Salmanu Male.

A local reporter who was in the town said he counted six bodies including five policemen and a security guard attached to the robbed bank.

"The police station has been reduced to rubble from the bombing and three bodies of uniformed policemen lay among the debris," said the reporter.

Another person died in hospital after he was shot by the fleeing gunmen when he attempted to pick up some of the stolen cash falling out of one of their bags, resident Jabir said.

Police were not immediately available to comment. Repeated calls put through to the police commissioner and his spokesman in the state went unanswered.

Male said the attackers carrying AK-47 rifles wore beards and were clad in long robes and "chanted Allahu Akbar (God is greatest) throughout the operation, suggesting they are Boko Haram".

This would be the first attack Boko Haram staged in Katsina state, suggesting that the sect was carrying out its threat of widening its attacks to other parts of the north.

It has since last year waged a low-level insurgency focusing mainly on the northeastern Maiduguri city, although it has also been active in northern Bauchi city.

An attack which police said was carried out by a suicide bomber shook the core of Nigerian security services last Thursday hitting the national police headquarters. At least two people - a policemen and the suspected bomber - were killed in the attack.

Boko Haram, which means "Western education is sin", launched in 2009 an uprising which was put down by a brutal military assault that left hundreds dead, mostly sect members.

It has pushed for the creation of an Islamic state and been blamed for the shootings of police and community leaders, bomb blasts and raids on churches, police stations and a prison.

Youth group alleges bomb blasts to discredit President Jonathan

Share4

Port Harcourt (WorldStage Newsonline)-- The Niger Delta Youths’ Council (NDYC) on Monday said the recent bomb blasts in Nigeria, especially in the Northern part, were planned to discredit President Goodluck Jonathan administration.

The group, in an eleven-point communiqué, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State and signed by its President, Kelly Jack; Spokesman, Ramson Erebor; and three others, condemned the bomb blast at the Police Force Headquarters in Abuja, which was claimed by the Boko Haram group.

The group also described the demand of the six governors of the states in the South South zone for Coastal Road, and the speedy completion of the East-West Road, as a step in the right direction.

It also suggested quick repositioning, thereby appropriating to the South West zone, what should be befitting it in the polity, considering the loss of speakership of the House of Representatives to the Northwest.

The NDYC, made up of non-violent agitators for peace and development across the Southsouth zone, lauded the leadership of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for availing President Jonathan, a son of the Niger Delta, its presidential ticket and the overwhelming votes for him by the electorate.

“We are proud of the carriage of Mr. President so far, in the conduct of the affairs of the country, especially in the wake of his promise to midwife positive transformation in the country. The judiciary and legislature are doing their businesses without executive interference, in spite of the avoidable post-election violence,” it said.

“The council agrees with and also congratulates the governors of the Southsouth states of Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Edo and Delta (BRACED), in their strong demand for the construction of the coastal and East-West roads, as well as the bid to establish vibrant economic and development-oriented institutions, to harness abundant resources in the zone.”

•TUC, workers threaten showdown

IN a move seen as testing the resolve of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to launch an attack against any governor not willing to pay the N18,000 minimum wage, South-East governors yesterday declared their resolve not to pay the sum.

To the five governors – Sullivan Chime (Enugu), Peter Obi (Anambra), Theodore Orji (Abia), Martin Elechi (Ebonyi) and Rochas Okorocha (Imo) – unless the present revenue formula is reviewed in favour of states, it would be difficult for them to pay workers the N18,000 minimum wage.

But, the workers immediately declared war on the governors.

The National Vice President of the Nigerian Civil Service Union (South-East), Comrade Tony Ude, the governors are looking for trouble.

At the governors’ meeting yesterday at the Government House, Enugu, were the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Ambassador Raph Uwechue, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emekia Ihedioha, and others.

The communique was read by Obi who is the Chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum.

Obi declared that the five govenors were committed to the payment of the N18,000 minimum wage but this can only be done if the revenue formula is reviewed.

He said: “We join the clamour for the review of revenue sharing formula so as to help the states pay the new minimum wage”.

He further hinted that the meeting agreed that South-East states would collectively complete the Zik’s Centre in Enugu. Yet, the Zik’s Mausoleum project in Onitsha, which appears jinxed, has remained uncompleted for more than a decade after the death of the frontline nationalist, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe.

The communiqué also clarified that the leaders would henceforth meet regularly to discuss issues affecting the Ndigbo and the nation as well as to work together for the common interest of the people of the area, not minding their political differences.

The leaders also wished Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu a quick recovery while expressing support for the Federal Government under the leadership of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Ude, who spoke with the Nigerian Compass, said workers would kick against the governors’ resolve to deny them their rights.

He said: “What they are saying amounts to a gang-up against South-East workers and we will not take it easy with them. Why didn’t they raise this when the law was in the making? Why is it only in the South-East that the governors and the political leaders are coming to say that they can’t pay? If it is a joke, they should stop it immediately because workers will fight them”.

Meanwhile, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has kicked against the refusal of some governors to pay the minimum wage, stressing that the governors lack the power to give conditions before they implement the new wage since the law was made by the National Assembly, and assented to by President Goodluck Jonathan.

TUC said it was wrong for the governors, who had promised to pay the new wage during their election campaigns to turn around, and say they will only pay it whenever the revenue sharing formula is adjusted to favour them.

The Rivers State TUC chairman, Comrade Chika Onuegbu, in a statement, noted that it was wrong for the governors to decide the laws to obey, and the ones that should be disregarded in a constitutional democracy. He pointed out that the posture of the governors could lead to anarchy.

He said: “The TUC expresses her displeasure at the unwillingness of the governors to respect the National Minimum Wage Amended Act, 2011. It would be recalled that many of these governors promised to pay the new minimum wage during their electioneering campaigns only to turn around after the election to say they can only pay the wage if and when the revenue sharing formula is adjusted in their favour.

“We are deeply worried that governors, in a constitutional democracy, choose which laws to obey and which not to obey; and shocked at the insistence of the governors that they will not obey a law validly made by the National Assembly, and assented to by the President unless there is an amendment of another law.”

Onuegbu said that workers across the country are expecting to be paid arrears of the new minimum wage, and urged the governors to pay them.

^^^I actually said same in one of my post that it should be tackled now. They still have few bomb gurus amongst them as you can see more often than not they fail the targets through pre-matured detonations. So its easy to swing it in the favour of the government by hitting up campaign to encourage nationalism and regulated religious doctrine.Such that target the foot soldiers.from there using sense walk up the ladders on the sect.
Lastly the government must thread carefully with dialogue and force.so as seeve out hardliners from weak members.this could go along way in exposing them and weakening the sect as a whole.
Asking for the sponsors sound silly to me.Govt should rather be looking for the recruiters and sects operational experts. They could rob and extort people for funding so how would you know a common robbery is meant to sponsor such an attack.

President Goodluck Jonathan must urgently tackle the growing Boko Haram threat, bombings and insecurity in the country, former Inspector General of Police Sunday Ehindero and the Action Congress of Nigeria (AC N) advised yesterday.

Former presidential candidate of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau and the Anglican Bishop of Awka diocese in Anambra State, the Rt. Rev. Alexandar Ibezim also spoke on the matter.

But they differ on the approach to the menace.

Ehindero, who spoke at his hometown, Oyin Akoko, Ondo State at the weekend, said the President should take proactive measures, including properly funding the Police, to get to the root of insecurity. He dismissed the suggestion of state police as recommended.

The ex-IG said since crime was being handled with dynamism by criminals, dynamic ways of combating crime should be fashioned be security operatives.

In his view, once suicide bombing becomes regular, it would be difficult for the police to arrest it.

“This is an ugly trend that must be swiftly tackled with all seriousness. That was how terrorism started in the Middle East; it is a trend that must not be allowed.

“Crime all over the world is dynamic and it must be addressed with dynamic ways of curbing crime. Before now, the nation was only experiencing robbery, which later developed into kidnapping and now bomb blast.

“Just like kidnapping became a difficult menace to handle, my fear is that, if not properly checked, bombing may become another phenomenon that will be difficult to combat.”

The former police chief is against state police which, according to him “cannot address the high level of insecurity in the country.” “I don’t think state policing is the solution to crime control; it will further aggravate the situation. Some governors will take undue advantage of state police to harass the public,” Ehindero said, adding: “Decentralising the police will not bring solution to crime; government should rather make the police more efficient and effective through proper funding.

The ACN said the federal government should urgently engage those behind the worsening

Boko Haram-led violence in dialogue, rather than place emphasis on the use of force, as a way of ending the violence.

In a statement in Lagos yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party urged Jonathan to take the lead in engaging the Boko Haram sect, just like the late President Umaru Yar’Adua took charge of the amnesty programme for the Niger Delta militants, instead of leaving it to the Borno State governor.

It also advised the police to talk less and show more tact in dealing with the issue, saying it took only days after the Inspector-General of Police Hafiz Ringim boasted that the days of the sect were numbered, for it to take the battle to the IGP’s doorsteps with the first-ever suicide bombing in Nigeria’s history.

The party urged the government not to be discouraged by the near impossible conditions for dialogue that have been reeled out by Boko Haram sect, saying dialogue will pay off in the end if those involved can stay the course and surmount the obstacles.

‘’Our stand is based on the fact that Boko Haram is a product of politics gone awry, as the former Borno State governor allegedly used the sect to further his political career only to dump it unceremoniously. The cold-blooded killing of its leader by the police was the last straw. This is just like how some governors in the Niger Delta allegedly helped to create the monster of militancy by arming youths for political ends. Thankfully, that militancy has now been largely curtailed through a political solution,’’ ACN said.

The party said Boko Haram has now evolved into a monster because of the dangerous mix of politics, religion, economy and international terrorism (alleged Al-Qaeda connection).

‘’Because of this dangerous mix, this monster cannot be subdued by force. If it were so easy, there would have been no dialogue with the IRA after years of military campaign against it. In any case, Nigeria currently lacks the capacity to use force to crush the Boko Haram sect. How many car parks, hotels or eateries and drinking joints can the police man? It is apparent that a sect that has claimed responsibility for bombings at military barracks as well as the headquarters of the police cannot be intimidated by six APCs, which the police said they have moved to Borno state.

‘’The authorities should also remember that a suicide bomber is an end-gamer who fears nothing, whether it is APCs or military tanks. And a man who has no value for his own life obviously

places no premium on anyone’s life. To worsen matters, the pervasive poverty in the country today, plus the evolving religious fanaticism, is such that there is large pool of willing recruits

for suicide bombing. The bad economy has created many Boko Harams.

‘’Since long years of bad governance have left millions of citizens destitute and hopeless, some are willing to wager their lives for the Utopian life-after, the eternal peace in heaven, being promised their followers by some clerics. In the reasoning of these end-gamers, why not look elsewhere for the better life that has eluded them in this part of the divide?’’ it said.

ACN warned that unless the government acts fast, the current state of insecurity can only harm the country’s image and ruin its economy, as no investors will be willing to come to a country where he or she can be blown up by suicide bombers.

‘’No foreign investor will wait for a travel advisory from his/her government before deciding not to visit a country where security is not guaranteed, where a drink in a pub can fetch one a bomb. This is why all stakeholders must be involved, as we advised in an earlier statement, in the efforts to resolve this Boko Haram crisis. Let the process begin today!’’ the party said.

Shekarau, in a statement by his spokesman Sule Ya’u Sule, described the bombing of the police headquarters as “callous”.

He said the attack should be condemned by all lovers of peace and tolerance.

Shekarau, the immediate past governor of Kano State, said he received the news of the blast and casualty figure with sadness, “because human life is very precious”.

The former governor challenged the police and other security agencies to intensify their vigilance and intelligence gathering.

“With the cooperation from the public, it will be easy to defeat those threatening the security, unity and stability of Nigeria,’’Shekarau said.

He prayed God to grant the souls of the dead repose and the wound quick recovery.

Shekarau urged Nigerians not to give in to fear and called on President Goodluck Jonathan to do everything in his power to ensure that the Boko Haram threat was nipped in the bud.

The Rt. Ibezim has called for the review of the security in the country.

^^^^ My brother i think so too.since i heard the story i doubt the build up to the incidence. If the explosion could take out 30 cars. you are just less than 5 cars close to the target or when you could crash pass the gate and ram into your target. undecided huh
For me it is possible, police notice the car following the convoy and as usual jump into the car confiscate it until the owner settle them. usually police attitude, jump into a car and insist you go park in a designated location.usually police station. So possibly they drove the suspect into the premises to the parking lot.one thing lead to another and bomb!!!! undecided

I got to know about hate in  Nigeria through NL. My very person has reservations about anybody south now. Thanks to NL.I think this forum makes them spit out there hate towards me and every thing North.
I never thought of separation of Nigeria before now but thanks to NL. I am firm believer and a firm advocate for it.I encourage alot of my Northerner folks to brace up for such. The unity is no more. just purely southern hatred. Before we are taken down Rwanda style one day.

School down south and i never saw all the hating.Usually i was like an ambassador of the south.telling people to embrace the south especially the Igbos. For me they are just good people only a bit , ! I have nothing against arresting the REAL perpetrators of the crime but as someone who knows of how police arrest innocent citizens and brand them as suspects, I will like the police to please tell us how they came about these 58 people. Did they get intelligence report that these people were involved in the bombing? Do they have any proof tying these 58 people to the crime?

If police had prior knowledge to the so called boko haram 'head-quaters', why did we have to wait this long to 'storm' the place considering the massive killings perpetrated by this groupd over the past few months?
Gbam !!!!
Anything goes.Such that mass arrest heavy violation of peoples right and all that.I am even told that in Abuja, all the usual indomie joints owners are being rounded up and all that. You know now.Extra judicial killings and violation of rights.Do you know a police recently told me that the police usually had allowance for maintaining informants!Guess what they don't have them anymore and as such have no such information.Only if out of strong will you risk your life and health to give information free information.
While all our SSS and the others do is attach priority to the people in power. The SSS PR director was on channel last time,i was disappointed in her reasoning. All her instances of security centered on providing GEJ security and not the nation. The successful foiling of the other attacks came from public information. She was even trying to argue that the police is rarely corrupt.Citing the example of successful security as protecting Presido before and after elections. What of the likely targets.Mammy market was attacked twice.from the first attack things should have changed based on recommendation to prevent another occurrence in another mammy market.Police stations have being attacked several times and yet no single change of protocol.Leading into the HQ attack.I tell you after this attack, give a month security will be back to business and vulnerable to attacks again. They only act after and for awhile then disappear. Neglect and clear senseless.
The SSS still attach priority to Government in power than the nation as a whole. In other countries anyone even the president can be there enemy if your action compromise national security.Ours is different they act as an extended arm of the presidential body guards. They SSS still leaves in the past and acts like its in the military era.
Forgetting that in today world and Nigeria. Its the people and nation that matter above all others. They SSS should provide the preventive solution and the police/others provide actions.

Maiduguri used to be a liberal city in the north with a lot of naturalized easterners back then. Now the dark veil of islamism has taken over and it has become a dungeon for the condemned
Wrong mind set Mr man.Its the kinda politics being played in this fucking country!People breed evil and after use can't dispose of it! Since you said in those days things were good, would you then say it was a christian, pagan etc state back then or still a Muslim dominated state? If the later is the case then the question is why did the same People of that state suddenly change.
All this started with the entry of democracy.Especially with the entry of the ex governor .He is terribly arrogant and built a thug like group around him.The death of the late Shehu has also dealt a blow to respect for the throne. The Governor despite objection still imposed a looney who commands no respect contrary to wishes,as the shehu's predecessor .
People have lost respect for the Government and royal father. No one can say stop! For me its still about power and poverty. So please leave Islam out of it.Its only used as a cover to form a brotherhood for such sects or group.Even the ideology of Boko haram has being objected to by the Muslim Ummah.
Lastly the sect operation has continuously targeted  people in the state who have risen to condemn there acts.It includes clergy from both xtians and Muslims.Traditional leaders.I tell you alot of people in the state have no regards for them but are prisoners and helpless. They FG is lost in terms of security and has failed the nation. The people are so scared they rather remain silent.
when the army first military raid on the sect in Maiduguri during there first up rising,Alot of Muslims contributed information that rounded alot of the sect members.Afterwards you know what happened such people became targets for the sect and Nigeria fail to provide them security and that is why people try to be quiet. The situation has also being given tribal and religious colouration.Do you know this same sect was quashed by yar'adua in about 5 states(Yobe,Borno,Adamawa,Bauchi and Kano) and this were serious uprisings and they had being stock piling weapons and explosives then.During the uprising, they targeted all Government establishments and security operatives. In Bauchi they attacked a mosque of another preacher who was critical of the sects teaching. In bauchi it escalated only when they stormed a police station.Doesn't it seem like due to Govt poor tackling of the situation this sect has grown balls.
It so sad when people now make it look like its because its GEJ in power or its because of the North and south rivalry.GEJ should get up and quash this treat like Obj and yar'adua.take control so people can sleep.Let people believe in the Government again.
I say blame Governments handling of the situation. Both the State and federal! The people are just victims and helpless. The religious aspect is used to deceive and gain international support from Islamic extremist period !!! who always see the west as purely evil and a treat.Even US has always expressed reservation of them ever connecting with al qeada.Which i think they have finally established due to our porous bothers.I fear we may soon be over run by foreign mercenaries.
