In Nigeria, most parents prefer their children to bear their extended family name as surname. In recent time, religion has made most of these people to drop these extended family names as they believe it carries a generational curse which they may or may not know of. Most of these people bear their baptismal name and father's first name. For example if their baptismal name is Michael and their father's name is John then they will bear Michael John.

why not bear their fathers native name instead of the white man's name.
